Abstract
The syntheses, spectral UV–Vis, NMR, and electrochemical as well as photocatalytic properties of novel magnesium(II) and zinc(II) symmetrical sulfanyl porphyrazines with 2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethylsulfanyl peripheral substituents are presented. Both porphyrazine derivatives were synthesized in cyclotetramerization reactions and subsequently embedded on the surface of commercially available P25 titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles. The obtained macrocyclic compounds were broadly characterized by ESI MS spectrometry, 1D and 2D NMR techniques, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and subjected to electrochemical studies. Both hybrid materials, consisting of porphyrazine derivatives embedded on the titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles’ surface, were characterized in terms of particle size and distribution. Next, they were subjected to photocatalytic studies with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran, a known singlet oxygen quencher. The applicability of the obtained hybrid material consisting of titanium(IV) oxide P25 nanoparticles and magnesium(II) porphyrazine derivative was assessed in photocatalytic studies with selected active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as diclofenac sodium salt and ibuprofen.

UV–vis
absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD)
spectra of octakis thioethyl “free base” porphyrazine
H2OESPz and its metal complexes MOESPz (M = Mg, Zn, Ni,
Pd, Cu), as well as of [MnOESPz(SH)] were recorded. In the last case,
MCD proved to have quite good sensitivity to the coordination of this
complex with 1-methylimidazole (1-mim) in benzene. Time-dependent
density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were carried out for
the considered porphyrazine complexes and showed good performance
on comparing with MCD and UV–vis experimental spectra, even
in the open-shell Cu and Mn cases. Calculations accounted for the
red shift observed in the thioalkyl compounds and allowed us to reveal
the role of sulfur atoms in spectroscopically relevant molecular orbitals
and to highlight the importance of the conformations of the thioethyl
external groups. Calculated MCD spectra of [MnOESPz(SH)] confirm the
Mn(III) → Mn(II) redox process, which leads to the [Mn(OESPz)(1-mim)2] species, and the relevance of the spin state for MCD is
revealed.

Abstract
A novel strategy for the synthesis of zinc thioporphyrazine nanospheres is presented. The uniform spheres were fabricated through a polymerization reaction without using any template or emulsifier, which result from the covalent links between zinc tetra(2,3-bis(pentenylthio)porphyrazine (ZnPz) possessing eight long flexible chains in periphery and each with one terminal olefin group. A possible mechanism to explain the self-assembly of ZnPz nanospheres was also illuminated through monitoring nanosphere formation by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). More importantly, ZnPz nanospheres can effectively activate dioxygen in aqueous media under simulated sunlight irradiation, and showed significantly improved photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) as compared to monomeric ZnPz. Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species derived from ZnPz nanospheres under light irradiation were determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology, indicating that singlet oxygen ([Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] and hydroxyl radical (•OH) are the major reactive oxygen species. The facile synthetic methodology and the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the ZnPz nanospheres endow this novel material with the potential of being an efficient biomimetic photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
A series of novel non-symmetrically substituted mono β-aryl and β-arylethynyl (alkylsulfanyl)porphyrazines and the corresponding Ni(ii) complexes have been prepared by the Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions with the aim to investigate substituent effects on their electronic and aggregation properties. Spectroscopic, electrochemical and computational investigations show that in both aryl and arylethynyl compounds efficient electron transfer between the aryl and macrocycle moieties occurs. The highest perturbation of the porphyrazine π-electron core is provided by strong electron-donating (NMe2) and electron withdrawing (NO2) aryl substituents, which increase and decrease the macrocycle electron density, respectively. Moreover, while in most of the compounds the LUMOs and HOMOs are mainly localized on the porphyrazine ring, in the amino-substituted derivatives the HOMO is localized on the peripheral aryl moieties and the LUMO is localized on the macrocycle. Charge-transfer electronic excitations give rise to absorptions in UV-Vis spectra of both amino- and nitro-substituted compounds. In the former such excitations occur from aryl-localized to macrocycle-localized orbitals, while backward excitations occur in the latter. Therefore, the porphyrazine ring shows an ambivalent behavior, acting as an electron acceptor in the case of the NMe2-substituted compounds and as an electron donor in the NO2-substituted derivative. In these derivatives, even macrocycle mono-substitution provides unconventional "push-pull" systems suitable for NLO. Columnar discotic mesophases are also shown by thio-octyl arylethynyl derivatives, allowing us to envisage the possibility to achieve compounds both suitable for optoelectronic applications and endowed with self-aggregation properties.

Abstract
Reaction of octakis(ethylthio)porphyrazine ( H 2 OESPz ) with FeBr 2 in ClCH 2 CH 2 OH at 135 °C affords the 2-chloroethoxy-iron(III)-(ethylthio)porphyrazine, ( ClCH 2 CH 2 O ) Fe III OESPz , ( LFe III OESPz ) in good yield. The spectroscopic, redox, and coordination properties of the complex and its μ-oxo dimer derivative, [ Fe III OESPz ]2 O , are investigated and compared to those of the iron(III)porphyrin analogs.

Abstract
Novel subphthalocyanine analogues that display strong absorption in the green region have been synthesized by using a boron template cyclotrimerization of maleonitrile derivatives. The spectroscopic properties of these macrocycles indicate that, like subphthalocyanines, they have 14 pi electrons and are aromatic compounds with a conical shape. The removal of the three fused benzene rings from the subphthalocyanine skeleton produces a 75-80 nm blue shift of the Q-band and a slight lowering of the absorption coefficients for this band. In addition, the reduction of the pi system from 18 to 14 electrons that accompanies progression from porphyrazines to subporphyrazines causes a hypsochromic shift of the Q-band of around 100 nm. Subporphyrazines that are peripherally functionalized with six thioether chains, and in which the sulfur atoms are attached directly to the pyrrole moieties, exhibit optical features that may be explained in terms of the extension of pi conjugation over the six thiolene groups, as well as strong pi donation from the sulfur lone pairs to the macrocycle. These two effects are quantitatively and qualitatively very similar to those observed for porphyrazines that possess the same type of substitution. In addition, the mesomorphic behavior at low temperatures of a macrocycle that is substituted with six thiododecyl chains was demonstrated by using differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarising microscopy.
