Synthesis of phosphinoferrocene amides and thioamides from carbamoyl chlorides and the structural chemistry of Group 11 metal complexes with these mixed-donor ligands

The reaction of in situ generated 1'-(diphenylphosphino)-1-lithioferrocene with carbamoyl chlorides, ClC(E)NMe2, affords the corresponding (thio)amides, Ph2PfcC(E)NMe2 (E = O (), S (); fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl). These compounds as well as their analogues, Ph2PfcC(O)NHMe () and Ph2PfcC(O)NH2 (), prepared from 1'-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene-1-carboxylic acid (Hdpf) were studied as ligands for the Group 11 metal ions. In the reactions with [Cu(MeCN)4][BF4], the amides give rise to bis-chelate complexes of the type [Cu(L-κ(2)O,P)2][BF4]. Similar products, [Ag(L-κ(2)O,P)2]ClO4, are obtained from silver(i) perchlorate and , or . In contrast, the reaction of AgClO4 with produces a unique molecular dimer [Ag()(ClO4-κO)]2, where the metal centres are bridged by the sulfur atoms of the P,S-chelating thioamides. The reactions of with [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) afford the expected gold(i)-phosphine complexes, [AuCl(L-κP)], containing uncoordinated (thio)amide moieties. Hemilabile coordination of the phosphinoamide ligands in complexes with the soft Group 11 metal ions is established by the crystal structure of a solvento complex, [Cu(-κ(2)O,P)(-κP)(CHCl3-κCl)][BF4], which was isolated serendipitously during an attempted crystallisation of [Cu(-κ(2)O,P)2][BF4]. All of the compounds are characterised by spectroscopic methods, and the structures of several representatives of both the free phosphinoamides and their complexes are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and further studied by DFT calculations and cyclic voltammetry.

rac-{[2-(Diphenyl-thio-phosphan-yl)ferrocen-yl]meth-yl}trimethyl-ammonium iodide chloro-form monosolvate

The title compound, [Fe(C5H5)(C21H24NPS)]I·CHCl3, is built up from a (ferrocenylmeth-yl)trimethyl-ammonium cation, a iodine anion and a chloro-form solvent mol-ecule, all residing in general positions. The N atom of the ammonium group is displaced by 1.182 (2) Å from the plane of the substituted cyclo-penta-dienyl (Cp) ring towards the Fe atom, whereas the C atom attached to the same Cp ring is slightly below this plane by -0.128 (2) Å. These deviations might result from weak agostic interactions between the two H atoms of the CH2 group and the Fe atom.

Activity of synthetic ion channels is influenced by cation-pi interactions with phospholipid headgroups

A suite of synthetic hydraphile ion channels has been used to probe the possibility of cation-pi interactions between the channel and the phospholipid bilayer. The hydraphiles selected for this study contained either no sidearm, aliphatic sidearms or aromatic sidearms that varied in electron-richness. An ion selective electrode (ISE) method was used to evaluate the ion transport ability of these hydraphiles across synthetic bilayers. Transport was dependent on sidearm identity. Ion transport activity for the aromatic sidechained compounds was greatest when the sidearms were electron rich and vesicles were prepared from 100% DOPC (trimethylammonium cation headgroup, overall neutral). When the lipid headgroups were made more negative by changing the composition from DOPC to 70 : 30 (w/w) DOPC : DOPA, transport by the aromatic-sidechained channels was reduced. Fluorescence studies showed that when the lipid composition changed, the headgroups experienced a different polarity, suggesting reorientation. The data are in accord with a stabilizing cation-pi interaction between the aromatic sidearm of the hydraphile channel and the ammonium phospholipid headgroup.
