Abstract
The thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tBu)2Th(bipy) (1; Cp3tBu = η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2) shows a rich reactivity toward a series of small molecules. For example, complex 1 may act as a synthon for the (Cp3tBu)2Th(II) fragment as illustrated by its reactivity toward to CuI, hydrazine derivative (PhNH)2, Ph2E2 (E = S, Se), elemental sulfur (S8) and selenium (Se), organic azides, CS2, and isothiocyanates. Moreover, in the presence of polar multiple bonds, such as those in ketones Ph2CO and (CH2)5CO, aldehydes p-MePhCHO and p-ClPhCHO, seleno-ketone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, nitriles PhCN, Ph2CHCN, C6H11CN, and p-(NC)2Ph, and benzoyl cyanide PhCOCN, C-C coupling occurs to furnish (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)((CH2)5CO)] (11), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (12), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(p-ClPhCHO)] (13), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (14), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (17), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(C6H11CN)] (18), [(Cp3tBu)2Th]2{μ-(bipy)[p-Ph(CN)2](bipy)} (20), and (Cp3tBu)2Th{(bipy)[PhC(CN)O]} (21), respectively. Nevertheless, ketazine (PhCH═N)2 or benzyl nitrile PhCH2CN forms the dimeric complexes [(Cp3tBu)Th]2[μ-NC(Ph)(bipy)]2 (15) and (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy){C(═CHPh)NH}] (19), respectively. In contrast, C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes occur upon addition of isonitriles Me3CNC and C6H11NC to 1 to yield the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tBu)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (22) and (Cp3tBu)2Th[4-(C6H11)bipy](NC) (23), respectively. Furthermore, a single-electron transfer (SET) process ensues when 1 equiv of CuI is added to 1 to yield the Th(VI) bipyridyl iodide complex (Cp3tBu)2Th(I)(bipy) (3).

Abstract
Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Abstract
Dinuclear, organometallic, transuranium compounds, (Cp'3M)2(μ-4,4'-bpy) (Cp'- = trimethylsilylcyclopentadienide, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, M = Ce, Np, Pu), reported herein provide a rare opportunity to probe the nature of actinide-carbon bonding. Significant splitting of the f-f transitions results from the unusual coordination environment in these complexes and leads to electronic properties that are currently restricted to organoactinide systems. Structural and spectroscopic characterization in the solid state and in solution for (Cp'3M)2(μ-4,4'-bpy) (M = Np, Pu) are reported, and their structural metrics are compared to a cerium analogue.

Abstract
Qualitative differences in the reactivity of trivalent lanthanide and actinide complexes have long been attributed to differences in covalent metal-ligand bonding, but there are few examples where thermodynamic aspects of this relationship have been quantified, especially with U3+ and in the absence of competing variables. Here we report a series of dimeric phosphinodiboranate complexes with trivalent f-metals that show how shorter-than-expected U-B distances indicative of increased covalency give rise to measurable differences in solution deoligomerization reactivity when compared to isostructural complexes with similarly sized lanthanides. These results, which are in excellent agreement with supporting DFT and QTAIM calculations, afford rare experimental evidence concerning the measured effect of variations in metal-ligand covalency on the reactivity of trivalent uranium and lanthanide complexes.

Abstract
The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC8) to a mixture of [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2UCl2 (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph2E2 (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph2C═N)2, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS2, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph2CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph2CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)2, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (16), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (18), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(N2C10H7C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(I)(bipy) (15).

Abstract
Variations in bonding between trivalent lanthanides and actinides is critical for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. The ability to tune bonding and the coordination environment in these trivalent systems is a key factor in identifying a solution for separating lanthanides and actinides. Coordination of 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) and trimethylsilylcyclopentadienide (Cp') to americium introduces unexpectedly ionic Am-N bonding character and unique spectroscopic properties. Here we report the structural characterization of (Cp'3Am)2(μ - 4,4'-bpy) and its lanthanide analogue, (Cp'3Nd)2(μ - 4,4'-bpy), by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Spectroscopic techniques in both solid and solution phase are performed in conjunction with theoretical calculations to probe the effects the unique coordination environment has on the electronic structure.

Abstract
Oxide is an attractive linker for building polymetallic complexes that provide molecular models for metal oxide activity, but studies of these systems are limited to metals in high oxidation states. Herein, we synthesized and characterized the molecular and electronic structure of diuranium bridged UIII /UIV and UIII /UIII complexes. Reactivity studies of these complexes revealed that the U-O bond is easily broken upon addition of N-heterocycles resulting in the delivery of a formal equivalent of UIII and UII , respectively, along with the uranium(IV) terminal-oxo coproduct. In particular, the UIII /UIII oxide complex effects the reductive coupling of pyridine and two-electron reduction of 4,4'-bipyridine affording unique examples of diuranium(III) complexes bridged by N-heterocyclic redox-active ligands. These results provide insight into the chemistry of low oxidation state metal oxides and demonstrate the use of oxo-bridged UIII /UIII complexes as a strategy to explore UII reactivity.

Self-healing polymers often have a trade-off between healing efficiency and mechanical stiffness. Stiff polymers that sacrifice their chain mobility are slow to repair upon mechanical failure. We herein report adaptable polymer films with dynamically moisture-controlled mechanical and optical properties, therefore having tunable self-healing efficiency. The design of the polymer film is based on the coordination of europium (Eu) with dipicolylamine (DPA)-containing random copolymers of poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-2-hydroxy-3-dipicolylamino methacrylate) (P(nBA-co-GMADPA)). The Eu-DPA complexation results in the formation of mechanically robust polymer films. The coordination of Eu-DPA has proven to be moisture-switchable given the preferential coordination of lanthanide metals to O over N, using nuclear magnetic resonance and fluorescence spectroscopy. Water competing with DPA to bind Eu3+ ions can weaken the cross-linking networks formed by Eu-DPA coordination, leading to the increase of chain mobility. The in situ dynamic mechanical analysis and ex situ rheological studies confirm that the viscofluid and the elastic solid states of Eu-polymers are switchable by moisture. Water speeds up the self-healing of the polymer film by roughly 100 times; while it can be removed after healing to recover the original mechanical stiffness of polymers.

Abstract
A series of f-block tungstates show atypical coloration for both the Ce(iii) and Pu(iii) compounds; whereas the other lanthanide and Am(iii) compounds possess normal absorption features. The different optical properties are actually derived from the tungstate component rather than from 5f electrons/orbitals.
A series of trivalent f-block tungstates, MW2O7(OH)(H2O) (M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Pu) and AmWO4(OH), have been prepared in crystalline form using hydrothermal methods. Both structure types take the form of 3D networks where MW2O7(OH)(H2O) is assembled from infinite chains of distorted tungstate octahedra linked by isolated MO8 bicapped trigonal prisms; whereas AmWO4(OH) is constructed from edge-sharing AmO8 square antiprisms connected by distorted tungstate trigonal bipyramids. PuW2O7(OH)(H2O) crystallizes as red plates; an atypical color for a Pu(iii) compound. Optical absorption spectra acquired from single crystals show strong, broadband absorption in the visible region. A similar feature is observed for CeW2O7(OH)(H2O), but not for AmWO4(OH). Here we demonstrate that these significantly different optical properties do not stem directly from the 5f electrons, as in both systems the valence band has mostly O-2p character and the conduction band has mostly W-5d character. Furthermore, the quasi-particle gap is essentially unaffected by the 5f degrees of freedom. Despite this, our analysis demonstrates that the f-electron covalency effects are quite important and substantially different energetically in PuW2O7(OH)(H2O) and AmWO4(OH), indicating that the optical gap alone cannot be used to infer conclusions concerning the f electron contribution to the chemical bond in these systems.

Abstract
Recent developments and results from the organometallic chemistry of the actinides are reviewed. In the last one and a half years the structural data of about 15 organometallic complexes of transuranium actinides (Np or Pu) have been published, all involving π-ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal ion. On the basis of these data, a comparison of these molecules is presented. Depending on the steric demands of the ligands, effects like the actinide contraction seem to be stronger or weaker in the structural features. This indicates that the interplay between the actinide ion and the π-ligand is rather flexible, enabling the formation of stable bonds over a broad range of actinide ion oxidation states.

Abstract
The synthesis of new molecular complexes of U(2+) has been pursued to make comparisons in structure, physical properties, and reactivity with the first U(2+) complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp'3 U], 1 (Cp'=C5 H4 SiMe3 ). Reduction of Cp''3 U [Cp''=C5 H3 (SiMe3 )2 ] with KC8 in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand or 18-crown-6 generates [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp''3 U], 2-K(crypt), or [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2 ][Cp''3 U], 2-K(18c6), respectively. The UV/Vis spectra of 2-K and 1 are similar, and they are much more intense than those of U(3+) analogues. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data for 1 and 2-K(crypt) reveal lower room temperature χM T values relative to the experimental values for the 5f(3) U(3+) precursors. Stability studies monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy show that 2-K(crypt) and 2-K(18c6) have t1/2 values of 20 and 15 h at room temperature, respectively, vs. 1.5 h for 1. Complex 2-K(18c6) reacts with H2 or PhSiH3 to form the uranium hydride, [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2 ][Cp''3 UH], 3. Complexes 1 and 2-K(18c6) both reduce cyclooctatetraene to form uranocene, (C8 H8 )2 U, as well as the U(3+) byproducts [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp'4 U], 4, and Cp''3 U, respectively.

Abstract
The syntheses of four nearly isostructural uranium(IV) monoarene complexes, supported by the arene anchored tris(aryloxide) chelate, [((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes](3-), are reported. Oxidation of the uranium(III) precursor [(((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes)U], 1, in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) results in THF coordination and distortion of the equatorial coordination sphere to afford the uranium(IV) η(6)-arene complexes, [(((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes)U(X)(THF)], 2-X-THF, (where X = F, Cl, Br, or I) as their THF adducts. The solvate-free trigonally ligated [(((Ad,Me)ArO)3mes)U(F)], 2-F, was prepared and isolated in the absence of coordinating solvents for comparison.

Abstract
Although polyazine extractants have been extensively studied as agents for partitioning trivalent actinides from lanthanides, an explanation for why certain azine compositions succeed and others fail is lacking. To address this issue, density functional theory calculations were used to evaluate fundamental properties (intrinsic binding affinity for a representative trivalent f-block metal, basicity, and hardness) for prototype azine donors pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, 1,2,3-triazine, 1,2,4-triazine, and 1,3,5-triazine, as well as perform conformational analyses of bisazine chelates formed by directly connecting two donors together. The results provide criteria that both rationalize the behavior of known extractants, TERPY, TPTZ, hemi-BTP, BTP, BTBP, and BTPhen, and predict a new class of extractants based on pyridazine donor groups.

Abstract
Chlorine K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and ground-state and time-dependent hybrid density functional theory (DFT) were used to probe the electronic structures of O(h)-MCl(6)(2-) (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, U) and C(4v)-UOCl(5)(-), and to determine the relative contributions of valence 3d, 4d, 5d, 6d, and 5f orbitals in M-Cl bonding. Spectral interpretations were guided by time-dependent DFT calculated transition energies and oscillator strengths, which agree well with the experimental XAS spectra. The data provide new spectroscopic evidence for the involvement of both 5f and 6d orbitals in actinide-ligand bonding in UCl(6)(2-). For the MCl(6)(2-), where transitions into d orbitals of t(2g) symmetry are spectroscopically resolved for all four complexes, the experimentally determined Cl 3p character per M-Cl bond increases from 8.3(4)% (TiCl(6)(2-)) to 10.3(5)% (ZrCl(6)(2-)), 12(1)% (HfCl(6)(2-)), and 18(1)% (UCl(6)(2-)). Chlorine K-edge XAS spectra of UOCl(5)(-) provide additional insights into the transition assignments by lowering the symmetry to C(4v), where five pre-edge transitions into both 5f and 6d orbitals are observed. For UCl(6)(2-), the XAS data suggest that orbital mixing associated with the U 5f orbitals is considerably lower than that of the U 6d orbitals. For both UCl(6)(2-) and UOCl(5)(-), the ground-state DFT calculations predict a larger 5f contribution to bonding than is determined experimentally. These findings are discussed in the context of conventional theories of covalent bonding for d- and f-block metal complexes.

Abstract
Oxidative halogenation with trityl chloride provides convenient access to Ce(IV) and U(IV) chloroamides [M(N{SiMe(3)}(2))(3)Cl] and their N-heterocyclic carbene derivatives, [M(L)(N{SiMe(3)}(2))(2)Cl] (L = OCMe(2)CH(2)(CNCH(2)CH(2)NDipp) Dipp = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)). Computational analysis of the bonding in these and a fluoro analogue, [U(L)(N{SiMe(3)}(2))(2)F], provides new information on the covalency in this relative rare oxidation state for molecular cerium complexes. Computational studies reveal increased Mayer bond orders in the actinide carbene bond compared with the lanthanide carbene bond, and natural and atoms-in-molecules analyses suggest greater overall ionicity in the cerium complexes than in the uranium analogues.

Abstract
Hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate uranium(III) diiodide derivatives have been prepared as an entry into low-valent uranium chemistry with these ligands. The bis(tetrahydrofuran) adduct, Tp*UI(2)(THF)(2) (1) (Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate), was synthesized by addition of sodium hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate (NaTp*) to an equivalent of UI(3)(THF)(4). Addition of 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy) to 1 displaced the THF molecules producing Tp*UI(2)(2,2'-bpy) (2). Both derivatives were characterized by (1)H NMR and IR spectroscopies, magnetic measurements, and X-ray crystallography. Reduction of both species was attempted with two equivalents of potassium graphite. The reduction of 1 did not result in a clean product, but rather decomposition and ligand redistribution. However, compound 2 was reduced to form Tp*(2)U(2,2'-bpy), 3, which is composed of a uranium(III) ion with a radical monoanionic bipyridine ligand. This was confirmed by X-ray crystallography, which revealed distortions in the bond lengths of the bipyridine consistent with reduction. Further support was obtained by (1)H NMR spectroscopy, which showed resonances shifted far upfield, consistent with radical character on the 2,2'-bipyridine ligand. Future studies will explore the reactivity of this compound as well as the consequences for redox-activity in the bipyridine ligand.

Abstract
The limits of steric crowding in organometallic metallocene complexes have been examined by studying the synthesis of [(C(5)Me(5))(3)ML(n)] complexes as a function of metal in which L=Me(3)CCN, Me(3)CNC, and Me(3)SiCN. The bis(tert-butyl nitrile) complexes [(C(5)Me(5))(3)Ln(NCCMe(3))(2)] (Ln=La, 1; Ce, 2; Pr, 3) can be isolated with the largest lanthanide metal ions, La(3+), Ce(3+), and Pr(3+). The Pr(3+) ion also forms an isolable mono-nitrile complex, [(C(5)Me(5))(3)Pr(NCCMe(3))] (4), whereas for Nd(3+) only the mono-adduct [(C(5)Me(5))(3)Nd(NCCMe(3))] (5) was observed. With smaller metal ions, Sm(3+) and Y(3+), insertion of Me(3)CCN into the M--C(C(5)Me(5)) bond was observed to form the cyclopentadiene-substituted ketimide complexes [(C(5)Me(5))(2)Ln{NC(C(5)Me(5))(CMe(3))}(NCCMe(3))] (Ln=Sm, 6; Y, 7). With tert-butyl isocyanide ligands, a bis-isocyanide product can be isolated with lanthanum, [(C(5)Me(5))(3)La(CNCMe(3))(2)] (8), and a mono-isocyanide product with neodymium, [(C(5)Me(5))(3)Nd(CNCMe(3))] (9). Silicon-carbon bond cleavage was observed in reactions between [(C(5)Me(5))(3)Ln] complexes and trimethylsilyl cyanide, Me(3)SiCN, to produce the trimeric cyanide complexes [{(C(5)Me(5))(2)Ln(mu-CN)(NCSiMe(3))}(3)] (Ln=La, 10; Pr, 11). With uranium, a mono-nitrile reaction product, [(C(5)Me(5))(3)U(NCCMe(3))] (12), which is analogous to 5, was obtained from the reaction between [(C(5)Me(5))(3)U] and Me(3)CCN, but [(C(5)Me(5))(3)U] reacts with Me(3)CNC through C--N bond cleavage to form a trimeric cyanide complex, [{(C(5)Me(5))(2)U(mu-CN)(CNCMe(3))}(3)] (13).

Abstract
A pair of mer-octahedral lanthanide chalcogenolate coordination complexes [(THF)(3)Ln(EC(6)F(5))(3) (Ln = Er, E = Se; Ln = Yb, E = S)] have been isolated and structurally characterized. Both compounds show geometry-dependent bond lengths, with the Ln-E bonds trans to the neutral donor tetrahydrofuran (THF) significantly shorter than the Ln-E bonds that are trans to negatively charged EC(6)F(5) ligands. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the structural trans influence evidenced by the differences in these bond lengths results from a covalent Ln-E interaction involving ligand p and Ln 5d orbitals.

Abstract
Reaction of (CpSiMe(3))(3)U or (CpSiMe(3))(3)Nd with (Cp*Al)(4) or Cp*Ga (Cp* = C(5)Me(5)) afforded the isostructural complexes (CpSiMe(3))(3)M-ECp* (M = U, E = Al (1); M = U, E = Ga (2); M = Nd, E = Al (3); M = Nd, E = Ga (4)). In the case of 1 and 2 the complexes were isolated in 39 and 90% yields, respectively, as crystalline solids and were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility, and UV-visible-NIR spectroscopy. In the case of 3 and 4, the complexes were observed by variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy but were not isolated as pure materials. Comparison of the equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters DeltaH and DeltaS obtained by (1)H NMR titration methods revealed a much stronger U-Ga interaction in 2 than the Nd-Ga interaction in 4. Competition reactions between (CpSiMe(3))(3)U and (CpSiMe(3))(3)Nd indicate that Cp*Ga selectively binds U over Nd in a 93:7 ratio at 19 degrees C and 96:4 at -33 degrees C. For 1 and 3, comparison of (1)H NMR peak intensities suggests that Cp*Al also achieves excellent U(III)/Nd(III) selectivity at 21 degrees C. The solution electronic spectra and solid-state temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities of 1 and 2, in addition to X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements from scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) of 1, are consistent with those observed for other U(III) coordination complexes. DFT calculations using five different functionals were performed on the model complexes Cp(3)M-ECp (M = Nd, U; E = Al, Ga), and empirical fitting of the values for Cp(3)M-ECp allowed the prediction of binding energy estimates for Cp*Al compounds 1 and 3. NBO/NLMO bonding analyses on Cp(3)U-ECp indicate that the bonding consists predominantly of a E-->U sigma-interaction arising from favorable overlap between the diffuse ligand lone pair and the primarily 7s/6d acceptor orbitals on U(III), with negligible U-->E pi-donation. The overall experimental and computational bonding analysis suggests that Cp*Al and Cp*Ga behave as good sigma-donors in these systems.

Abstract
Treatment of [M(BH4)3(THF)3] with NEt3HBPh4 in THF afforded the cationic complexes [M(BH4)2(THF)5][BPh4] [M = U (1), Nd (2), Ce (3)] which were transformed into [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)][BPh4] [M = U (4), Nd (5), Ce (6)] in the presence of 18-crown-6; [U(BH4)2(18-thiacrown-6)][BPh4] (7) was obtained from 1 and 18-thiacrown-6 in tetrahydro-thiophene. Compounds 1, 3.C4H8S, 4.THF, 5, and 6.THF exhibit a penta- or hexagonal bipyramidal crystal structure with the two terdentate borohydride ligands in apical positions; the BH4 groups in the crystals of 7.C4H8S are in relative cis positions, and the thiacrown-ether presents a saddle shape, with two diametrically opposite sulfur atoms bound to uranium in trans positions. The crystal structures of these complexes, as well as those of previously reported [M(BH4)2(THF)5]+ cations, do not reveal any clear-cut lanthanide(III)/actinide(III) differentiation. The structural data obtained for [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)]+ (M = U, Ce) by relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations are indicative of a small shortening of the U...B with respect to the Ce...B distance, which is accompanied by a lengthening of the U-Hb bonds and an opening of the Hb-B-Hb angle (Hb = bridging hydrogen atom of the eta3-BH4 ligand). The Mulliken population analysis and the natural bond orbital analysis indicate that the BH4 -->M(III) donation is greater for M = U than for M = Ce, as well as the overlap population of the M-Hb bond, thus showing a better interaction between the uranium 5f orbitals and the Hb atoms. The more covalent character of the B-H-U three-center two-electron bond was confirmed by the molecular orbital (MO) analysis. Three MOs represent the pi bonding interactions between U(III) and the three Hb atoms with significant 6d and 5f orbital contributions. These MOs in the cerium(III) complex exhibit a much lesser metallic weight with practically no participation of the 4f orbitals.
