Quantum dynamics and spectroscopy of dihalogens in solid matrices. I. Efficient simulation of the photodynamics of the embedded I2Kr18 cluster using the G-MCTDH method

The molecular dynamics following the electronic BΠu30⁺⟵XΣg+1 photoexcitation of the iodine molecule embedded in solid krypton are studied quantum mechanically using the Gaussian variant of the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method (G-MCTDH). The accuracy of the Gaussian wave packet approximation is validated against numerically exact MCTDH simulations for a fully anharmonic seven-dimensional model of the I₂Kr₁₈ cluster in a crystal Kr cage. The linear absorption spectrum, time-evolving vibrational probability densities, and I₂ energy expectation value are accurately reproduced by the numerically efficient G-MCTDH approach. The reduced density matrix of the chromophore is analyzed in the coordinate, Wigner and energy representations, so as to obtain a multifaceted dynamical view of the guest-host interactions. Vibrational coherences extending over the bond distance range 2.7 Å < R_I-I < 4.0 Å are found to survive for several vibrational periods, despite extensive dissipation. The present results prepare the ground for the simulation of time-resolved coherent Raman spectroscopy of the I₂-krypton system addressed in Paper II.

Rotation of methyl radicals in a solid krypton matrix

Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements were carried out to study the rotation of methyl radicals (CH(3)) in a solid krypton matrix at 17-31 K temperature range. The radicals were produced by dissociating methane by plasma bursts generated by a focused 193 nm excimer laser radiation during the krypton gas condensation on the substrate. The ESR spectrum exhibits only isotropic features at the temperature range examined, and the intensity ratio between the symmetric (A) and antisymmetric (E) spin state lines exhibits weaker temperature dependence than in a solid argon matrix. However, the general appearance of the methyl radical spectrum depends strongly on temperature due to the pronounced temperature dependency of the E state linewidths. The rotational energy level populations are analyzed based on the static crystal field model, pseudorotating cage model, and quantum chemical calculations for an axially symmetric, planar rotor. Crystal field strength parameter values of -140 cm(-1) in Ar and -240 cm(-1) in Kr match most closely the experimentally observed rotational energy level shifts from the gas phase value. In the alternative model, considering the lattice atom movement in a pseudorotating cage, the effective lowering of the rotational constants B and C to 80%-90% leads to similar effects.

Dynamics of Electronic States and Spin−Flip for Photodissociation of Dihalogens in Matrices: Experiment and Semiclassical Surface-Hopping and Quantum Model Simulations for F2 and ClF in Solid Ar

Three approaches are combined to study the electronic states' dynamics in the photodissociation of F(2) and ClF in solid argon. These include (a) semiclassical surface-hopping simulations of the nonadiabatic processes involved. These simulations are carried out for the F(2) molecule in a slab of 255 argon atoms with periodic boundary conditions at the ends. The full manifold of 36 electronic states relevant to the process is included. (b) The second approach involves quantum mechanical reduced-dimensionality models for the initial processes induced by a pump laser pulse, which involve wavepacket propagation for the preoriented ClF in the frozen argon lattice and incorporate the important electronic states. The focus is on the study of quantum coherence effects. (c) The final approach is femtosecond laser pump-probe experiments for ClF in Ar. The combined results for the different systems shed light on general properties of the nonadiabatic processes involved, including the singlet to triplet and intertriplet transition dynamics. The main findings are (1) that the system remains in the initially excited-state only for a very brief, subpicosecond, time period. Thereafter, most of the population is transferred by nonadiabatic transitions to other states, with different time constants depending on the systems. (2) Another finding is that the dynamics is selective with regard to the electronic quantum numbers, including the Lambda and Omega quantum numbers, and the spin of the states. (3) The semiclassical simulations show that prior to the first "collision" of the photodissociated F atom with an Ar atom, the argon atoms can be held frozen, without affecting the process. This justifies the rigid-lattice reduced-dimensionality quantum model for a brief initial time interval. (4) Finally, degeneracies between triplets and singlets are fairly localized, but intertriplet degeneracies and near degeneracies can span an extensive range. The importance of quantum effects in photochemistry of matrix-isolated molecules is discussed in light of the results.

Ultrafast dynamics of halogens in rare gas solids

We perform time resolved pump-probe spectroscopy on small halogen molecules ClF, Cl2, Br2, and I2 embedded in rare gas solids (RGS). We find that dissociation, angular depolarization, and the decoherence of the molecule is strongly influenced by the cage structure. The well ordered crystalline environment facilitates the modelling of the experimental angular distribution of the molecular axis after the collision with the rare gas cage. The observation of many subsequent vibrational wave packet oscillations allows the construction of anharmonic potentials and indicate a long vibrational coherence time. We control the vibrational wave packet revivals, thereby gaining information about the vibrational decoherence. The coherence times are remarkable larger when compared to the liquid or high pressure gas phase. This fact is attributed to the highly symmetric molecular environment of the RGS. The decoherence and energy relaxation data agree well with a perturbative model for moderate vibrational excitation and follow a classical model in the strong excitation limit. Furthermore, a wave packet interferometry scheme is applied to deduce electronic coherence times. The positions of those cage atoms, excited by the molecular electronic transitions are modulated by long living coherent phonons of the RGS, which we can probe via the molecular charge transfer states.

Intense-field alignment of molecules confined in octahedral fields

The combined effect of static octahedral potential and anisotropic interactions with intense linearly polarized light on the rotational motion of linear molecules is investigated. Avoided crossings of quantized energy levels corresponding to pendular states with different degrees of alignment are found by varying the strength parameters for the light and static fields. High alignment is achieved for both cooperative and competitive choices of the relative directionality of the two fields, thus presenting means for controlling the dynamics of impurity centers with respect to the surrounding media.

Infrared absorption spectrum of matrix-isolated noble-gas hydride molecules: Fingerprints of specific interactions and hindered rotation

Noble-gas hydride molecules with the general formula HNgY (Ng denotes noble-gas atom and Y denotes electronegative fragment) are usually prepared in solid noble gases. In many cases, the matrix-isolated HNgY molecules show a characteristic structure of the H-Ng stretching absorption: A close doublet as the main spectral feature and a weaker satellite at higher energy. This characteristic band structure is studied here for matrix-isolated HXeBr and HKrCl molecules. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, we suggest a model explaining the common features of the band structure of the HNgY molecules in noble-gas matrices. In this model, the main doublet bands are attributed to matrix sites where the splitting is caused by specific interactions of the embedded molecule with noble-gas matrix atoms in certain local morphology. The weaker blueshifted band is probably a fingerprint of hindered rotation (libration) of the embedded molecule in the lattice. This librational band has a mirror counterpart at lower energies appearing at higher matrix temperatures. Our present ab initio calculations for the one-to-one Xe...HXeBr complexes and the simulation of hindered rotation in a matrix support this image.
