Electronic spectra of jet-cooled 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene: Strength in π-electron conjugation and two large-amplitude torsional motions

To spectroscopically qualify strength in the π-electron conjugation, the electronic spectra of jet-cooled 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) in the region of the transition to the lowest excited singlet (S1) 1B1u state are measured by the fluorescence excitation and the single-vibronic-level dispersed fluorescence methods. Strength is defined as the difference in potential energies between the planar and perpendicular conformations. BPEB possesses two large-amplitude torsional motions, out-of-phase 24 and in-phase 29 modes. The most stable is the planar conformation, and barrier heights at the perpendicular conformation are coincident in torsional potentials for the two modes. Torsional levels are successively observed up to 19± and 16- quantum levels in the ground state, respectively. Strength is determined to be 293 cm-1 (3.51 kJmol-1) with an accuracy of an error range smaller than 1 cm-1. In the excited state, strength is estimated to be 1549 ± 73 cm-1. Combination levels of two torsional modes are also measured up to high quantum levels. A systematic decrease in frequencies is observed with increasing the quantum number. Quantum-chemistry calculations of B3LYP, CAM-B3PLYP, WB97XD, and M062X with basis sets of aug-cc-pVDZ are performed, where B3LYP theories are carried out with the dispersion correlation. The calculated strength is 1.1-2.1 times larger than observed.

Synthesis and characterization of a fluorescent steroid dimer linked through C-19 by a 1,4-Bis(phenylethynyl)phenylene fragment

The synthesis and characterization of a dimer in which two nuclei of 3β-acetoxy-19-hydroxyandrost-5-en-17-one are linked by the fluorescent 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)phenylene bridge attached to the oxygenated functions at positions C-19 of each steroid fragment is described. The compound was obtained in five steps and 23 % overall yield and showed a strong blue emission with a quantum yield of 0.66.

Highly Efficient Deep-Blue Electroluminescence Based on a Solution-Processable A-π-D-π-A Oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) Small Molecule

The development of solution-processable fluorescent small molecules with highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence is of growing interest for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) applications. However, high-performance deep-blue fluorescent emitters with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) over 5% are still scarce in OLEDs. Herein, a novel highly soluble oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene)-based small molecule, 1,4-bis((2-cyanophenyl)ethynyl)-2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzene (2EHO-CNPE), is designed, synthesized, and fully characterized as a wide band gap (2.98 eV) and highly fluorescent (Φ_PL = 0.90 (solution) and 0.51 (solid-state)) deep-blue emitter. The new molecule is functionalized with cyano (-CN)/2-ethylhexyloxy (-OCH₂CH(C₂H₅)C₄H₉) electron-withdrawing/-donating substituents, and ethynylene is used as a π-spacer to form an acceptor (A)-π-donor (D)-π-acceptor (A) molecular architecture with hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) excited states. Physicochemical and optoelectronic characterizations of the new emitter were performed in detail, and the single-crystal structure was determined. The new molecule adopts a nearly coplanar π-conjugated framework packed via intermolecular "C-H···π" and "C-H···N" hydrogen bonding interactions without any π-π stacking. The OLED device based on 2EHO-CNPE shows an EQE_max of 7.06% (EQE = 6.30% at 200 cd/m²) and a maximum current efficiency (CE_max) of 5.91 cd/A (CE = 5.34 cd/A at 200 cd/m²) with a deep-blue emission at CIE of (0.15, 0.09). The electroluminescence performances achieved here are among the highest reported to date for a solution-processed deep-blue fluorescent small molecule, and, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a deep-blue OLED is reported based on the oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) π-framework. TDDFT calculations point to facile reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes in 2EHO-CNPE from high-lying triplet states to the first singlet excited state (T₂/T₃ → S₁) (hot-exciton channels) that enable a high radiative exciton yield (η_r ∼ 69%) breaking the theoretical limit of 25% in conventional fluorescent OLEDs. These results demonstrate that properly designed fluorescent oligo(p-phenyleneethynylenes) can be a key player in high-performance deep-blue OLEDs.

Cooperative and FRET-Assisted Brightness Enhancement in Oligo(phenylene ethynylene): Quantum Dot Organic-Inorganic Nanohybrids

Herein, we combine the ideas of concerted emission from fluorophore ensembles and its further amplification through FRET in an organic-inorganic hybrid approach. Spherical and highly fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONPs, Φ_f =0.38), prepared by the self-assembly of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) molecules, were selected as a potential donor material. This organic core was then decorated with a shell of fluorescent CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs; <d>≅5.5 nm, Φ_f =0.27) with the aid of a bifunctional ligand, mercaptopropionic acid. Its high extinction coefficient (ϵ≈4.1×10⁵  m^-1  cm^-1 ) and good spectral match with the emission of the FONPs (J(λ)≈4.08×10¹⁶  m^-1  cm^-1  nm⁴ ) made them a better acceptor candidate to constitute an efficient FRET pair (Φ_FRET =0.8). As a result, the QD fluorescence intensity was enhanced by more than twofold. The fundamental calculations carried out indicated an improvement in all the FRET parameters as the number of QDs around the FONPs was increased. This, together with the localization of multiple QDs in a nanometric dimension (volume≈1.8×10⁶  nm³ ), gave highly bright reddish luminescent hybrid particles as visualized under a fluorescence microscope.

Fluorine-containing bistolanes as light-emitting liquid crystalline molecules

We synthesised a series of dissymmetric bistolane derivatives and evaluated their liquid-crystalline (LC) and photoluminescence properties in detail. In measuring LC behaviours, rational structural design based on the dissymmetric molecular structure and electron-density distribution facilitated the production of the LC phase with a wide temperature range (up to 97 °C). In addition, dissymmetric bistolane derivatives were shown to strongly emit blue-photoluminescence in dilute solution and in crystalline states. It was found that dissymmetric bistolanes possess emissive features in even the LC phase and photoluminescence behaviours such as emission intensity and colour were sensitively switched depending on the molecular aggregate structure caused by applying a thermal stimulus.

Unveiling the photophysical and morphological properties of an acidochromic thiophene flanked dipyrrolopyrazine-based chromophore for optoelectronic application

A series of dipyrrolopyrazine (DPP) based chromophores featuring thiophene and varied donor (N,N-dimethylamine, NH₂, OMe) and acceptor (CF₃, CN, NO₂) appendages have been synthesized. The structures and properties of the chromophores were investigated by absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates a planar geometry for the molecule 7g. Surface morphological studies reveal the formation of microrods and nanorods. The acidochromic behavior of the chromophore which shows a prominent red-shift in the absorption spectra owing to the protonation of the pyrazine segment provides a valuable opportunity to assess the sensory response. Acid dependent spectral changes could be successfully applied to detect pH in biological fluids and acid impurities in solvents.

Synthesis and photophysical investigation of a series of push-pull arylvinyldiazine chromophores

A new series of push-pull arylvinyldiazines has been efficiently prepared by aldol condensation between the appropriate methyldiazine and aromatic aldehyde. The optical absorption and emission properties of these chromophores were studied in different solvents and media. These compounds act as polarity sensors with a strong positive emission solvatochromism. This behavior suggests a highly polar emitting state, which is characteristic of compounds that undergo an internal charge transfer upon excitation. These molecules also exhibit halochromic properties and are potential colorimetric and luminescence pH sensors. The second-order nonlinear properties have been investigated for some of the compounds, and large and positive μβ are obtained, in particular, for pyrimidine derivatives.

Organic polyaromatic hydrocarbons as sensitizing model dyes for semiconductor nanoparticles

The study of interfacial charge-transfer processes (sensitization) of a dye bound to large-bandgap nanostructured metal oxide semiconductors, including TiO(2), ZnO, and SnO(2), is continuing to attract interest in various areas of renewable energy, especially for the development of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The scope of this Review is to describe how selected model sensitizers prepared from organic polyaromatic hydrocarbons have been used over the past 15 years to elucidate, through a variety of techniques, fundamental aspects of heterogeneous charge transfer at the surface of a semiconductor. This Review does not focus on the most recent or efficient dyes, but rather on how model dyes prepared from aromatic hydrocarbons have been used, over time, in key fundamental studies of heterogeneous charge transfer. In particular, we describe model chromophores prepared from anthracene, pyrene, perylene, and azulene. As the level of complexity of the model dye-bridge-anchor group compounds has increased, the understanding of some aspects of very complex charge transfer events has improved. The knowledge acquired from the study of the described model dyes is of importance not only for DSSC development but also to other fields of science for which electronic processes at the molecule/semiconductor interface are relevant.

Tunable photophysical properties of phenyleneethynylene based bipyridine ligands

A bipyridine-based system with phenyleneethynylene at the 4,4' positions (1) and its p-methyl (2) and p-methoxy (3) substituted derivatives were synthesized via Sonogashira coupling reactions. The photophysical properties of 1-3 and their related H+ and Zn2+ adducts (1:H+-3:H+ and 1:Zn2+-3:Zn2+) were investigated, as a function of solvent polarity, by using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Molecular systems 1-3 exhibit trans conformation, whereas adducts with H+ and Zn2+ are conformationally locked cis species. The unsubstituted compound 1 emits at 360 nm with low fluorescence quantum yield (phi(fl) = 0.2%) regardless of the solvent polarity. Fluorescence spectra of 2 and 3 are bathochromically shifted in polar solvents, and the p-methoxy (3) derivative possesses phi(fl) as high as 12%. Complexation of 1-3 with H+ or Zn2+ in acetonitrile causes red-shift of the lowest energy absorption bands, whereas dramatic changes of the emission properties are found as a function of the electron donating ability of the substituents on the phenyleneethynylene moiety (-CH3 or -OCH3), suggesting a charge-transfer character of the lowest electronic transition of 1-3. 1:H+, 1:Zn2+, 2:H+ and 2:Zn2+ exhibit intense fluorescence with phi(fl) up to 33% (1:Zn2+) whilst 3:H+ and 3:Zn2+ are found to be weakly emissive. The singlet radiative and non-radiative rate constants of compounds and complexes were determined, along with triplet parameters, via phosphorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy. More conclusive evidence regarding the protonation of bipyridine nitrogen atoms of compounds 1-3 were obtained through 1H NMR titration studies. These studies indicate that the conjugate molecular systems based on 2,2'-bipyridine and phenyleneethenylenes possess tunable optical properties which can be further utilized for preparing organic and inorganic luminophores with potential application in optoelectronic systems.

Photophysical and theoretical investigations of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene)s: effect of alkoxy substitution and alkyne-aryl bond rotations

The unique photophysical, conformational, and electronic properties of two model phenyleneethynylene-based rigid rod molecular systems, possessing dialkoxy substitutions, are reported in comparison with an unsubstituted system. Twisting of the phenyl rings along the carbon-carbon triple bond is almost frictionless in these systems giving rise to planar as well as several twisted ground-state conformations, and this results in broad structureless absorption in the spectral region of 250-450 nm. In the case of 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene, a broad absorption band was observed due to the HOMO-LUMO transition, whereas dialkoxy-substituted compounds possess two well-separated bands. Dialkoxy substitution in the 2,5-position of the phenyl ring in phenyleneethynylenes alters its central arene pi-orbitals through the resonance interaction with oxygen lone pairs resulting in similar orbital features for HOMO and HOMO-1/HOMO-2. Electronic transition from the low-lying HOMO-1/HOMO-2 orbital to LUMO results in the high-energy band, and the red-shifted band originates from the HOMO-LUMO transition. The first excited-state transition energies at different dihedral angles, calculated by the TDDFT method, indicate that the orthogonal conformation has the highest excitation energy with an energy difference of 15 kcal/mol higher than the low-lying planar conformation. The emission of these compounds originates preferentially from the more relaxed planar conformation resulting in well-defined vibronic features. The fluorescence spectral profile and lifetimes were found to be independent of excitation wavelengths, confirming the existence of a single emitting species.

Singlet and Triplet Excited-State Interactions and Photochemical Reactivity of Phenyleneethynylene Oligomers

The rigid rodlike character of phenyleneethynylenes and their ability to communicate charge/excitation energy over long distances have made them useful as molecular linkers in the light energy harvesting assemblies and molecular electronics devices. These linker molecules themselves possess rich photochemistry as evident from the relatively large yields of the excited singlet (0.5-0.66) and triplet (0.4-0.5) states of two model oligomers, 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)-2,5-bis(hexyloxy)benzene (OPE-1) and 1,4-bis((4-phenylethynyl)phenylethynyl)-2,5-bis(hexyloxy)benzene (OPE-2). In particular, the long-lived triplet excited state is capable of undergoing deactivation by self-quenching processes such as ground-state quenching and triplet-triplet (T-T) annihilation. The T-T annihilation occurs with a nearly diffusion-controlled rate (approximately 2 x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1)), and ground-state quenching occurs with a rate constant of approximately 6 x 10(7) M(-1) s(-1). The electron transfer from the excited OPE-1 and OPE-2 to benzoquinone as characterized from the transient absorption spectroscopy illustrates the ability of these molecules to shuttle the electrons to acceptor moieties. In addition, pulse radiolysis experiments confirm the spectroscopic fingerprint of the cation radical (or "trapped hole") with absorption bands in the 500-600 nm region.
