Palladium(ii) diamine complex induces reduction of glutathione disulfide

Water-soluble Pd nanoparticles capped with glutathione: synthesis, characterization, and magnetic properties

The synthesis, characterization, and magnetic properties of water-soluble Pd nanoparticles capped with glutathione are described. The glutathione-capped Pd nanoparticles were synthesized under argon and air atmospheres at room temperature. Whereas the former exhibits a bulklike lattice parameter, the lattice parameter of the latter is found to be considerably greater, indicating anomalous lattice expansion. Comparative structural and compositional studies of these nanoparticles suggest the presence of oxygen in the core lattice when Pd nanoparticles are prepared under an air atmosphere. Both Pd nanoparticles prepared under argon and air show ferromagnetism at 5 K, but the latter exhibits significantly greater coercivity (88 Oe) and magnetization (0.09 emu/g at 50 kOe). The enhanced ferromagnetic properties are explained by the electronic effect of the incorporated oxygen that increases the 4d density of holes at the Pd site and localizes magnetic moments.

Reversible Ligand Pairing and Sorting Processes Leading to Heteroligated Palladium(II) Complexes with Hemilabile Ligands

Halide-induced ligand pairing and sorting processes have been observed in the context of Pd(II) complexes with hemilabile P,S and P,O ligands. Mixing of the ligands Ph₂PCH₂CH₂SMe (7) and Ph₂PCH₂CH₂SPh (8) with a Pd(II) precursor in CH₂Cl₂ results in a mixture of [(7)₂ClPd]Cl, [(8)₂Cl₂Pd], and [(7)(8)ClPd]Cl complexes at 20 °C. This equilibrium can be driven toward the heteroligated structure [(7)(8)ClPd]Cl by (1) cooling the mixture or (2) precipitation with hexanes, leading to the exclusive formation of semiopen heteroligated complex cis-[κ ²-(7)-κ ¹-(8)ClPd]Cl (9a), as confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study and solid state CPMAS ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectroscopy. Dissolution of 9a in CH₂Cl₂ leads to the original mixture of complexes, which illustrates the reversible nature of this ligand pairing and sorting process. Similar processes occur when a combination of P,S and P,O ligands is used. The semiopen heteroligated complexes can be chemically manipulated in a reversible fashion to form closed complexes, allowing for control of the relative position and flexibility between neighboring substituents in these "tweezer"-like structures. Control experiments suggest these ligand sorting and pairing processes occur via a halide-induced ligand rearrangement (HILR) reaction.

Can metal ions be used as gas-phase disulfide bond cleavage reagents? A survey of coinage metal complexes of model peptides containing an intermolecular disulfide bond

The role that a metal ion can have in promoting disulfide bond cleavage has been assessed by surveying the tandem mass spectra of the following metal complexes of model peptides containing an intermolecular disulfide bond: [M--H+Cu(II)](+); [M--H+Cu(II)(bipy)](+); [M+Ag(I)](+); and [M+Au(I)(PMe(3))](+). In comparison to previously studied protonated peptides, these binary and ternary metal complexes generally yield more abundant S--S and/or C--S bond cleavage. In general, [M--H+Cu(II)](+) ions cleave the adjacent C--S bond more readily, while the [M+Au(I)(PMe(3))](+) ion cleaves the S--S bond more readily. The ternary metal complex [M--H+Cu(II)(bipy)](+), on the other hand, fragments by exclusive loss of the bipyridyl ligand for the larger model peptides studied. Of all coinage metal systems studied, Me(3)PAu(+) is superior in promoting disulfide bond cleavage.

Metal ion selectivity of oligopeptides

Metal binding affinity and selectivity of peptides are reviewed with a special emphasis on the high structural variety of peptide complexes. The most common structural type of these complexes is built up by the deprotonation and metal ion coordination of subsequent amide groups in the form of fused five-membered chelate rings. The metal ion selectivity of this process and the role of various anchoring groups are discussed in detail. The highest metal binding affinity of peptides is connected to the presence of two anchoring groups in appropriate location (the "double anchor"): e.g. the NH2-Xaa-Xaa-His/Cys/Asp/Met-Xaa sequence. Among the side chain donor functions, the imidazole of histidyl and thiolate of cysteinyl residues are the most effective ligating groups and their involvement in metal binding results in a great variety of different macrochelate or loop structures and/or formation of various polynuclear complexes. Examples of these structural motifs and their possible applications have been thoroughly discussed.
