Abstract
The spectral characteristics of trans-2-[4'-(N,N-dimethylamino)styryl]imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (t-DMASIP-b) have been investigated using absorption and fluorescence techniques, and compared with 2-(4'-N,N-dimethylamino)imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (DMAPIP-b). The study reveals that introduction of a C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond strongly perturbs the photophysics of the system. Unlike DMAPIP-b, t-DMASIP-b emits a single emission in aprotic and protic solvents. The emission occurs from the locally excited state in nonpolar solvents and from a planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) state in polar solvents. Multiple linear regression analysis suggests that among the different solvent parameters, the dipolar interaction contributes more to the stabilization of the system in both the ground and excited states. Theoretical calculations suggest that, unlike in DMAPIP-b, proton coupled twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) emission does not occur in t-DMASIP-b. The higher quantum yield obtained in the viscous solvent glycerol is attributed to the restriction of the twisting of the olefinic bond. The photoirradiation of t-DMASIP-b shows that isomerization takes place in all solvents, including viscous glycerol. The theoretically simulated potential energy surface shows that isomerization occurs via a phantom state, which is a nonradiative process. The rise in temperature favors the photoisomerization, thus, the fluorescence quantum yield decreases. The prototropic study indicates that, unlike in DMAPIP-b, the protonation takes place at different places to form the monocations.

Abstract
Treatment of 1,1-bis(pinacolatoboryl)ethene with an excess of 1-bromo-1-lithioethene gave 2,3-bis(pinacolatoboryl)-1,3-butadiene in high yield. Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of the resulting diborylbutadiene with aryl iodides took place smoothly in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(OAc)2/PPh3 and aqueous KOH to give 2,3-diaryl-1,3-butadienes in good yields. The coupling reaction with commercially available 4-acetoxyphenylmethyl chloride under the same conditions followed by hydrolysis of the acetyl groups gave anolignan B in a one-pot manner. A variety of [3]- to [6]dendralenes were synthesized by palladium-catalyzed coupling of the diene or 1,1-bis(pinacolato)borylethene with alkenyl or dienyl halides, respectively, in good yields.

Abstract
3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (BTFP) sulfones 7 have been employed in the Julia-Kocienski olefination reaction with carbonyl compounds. Sulfones 7 are readily prepared in high yields (64-97%) from commercially available 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)thiophenol through an alkylation/oxidation two-step sequence. The stability of metalated BTFP sulfones has been studied and compared with heteroaryl benzothiazol-2-yl (BT), 1-phenyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl (PT), and 1-tert-butyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl (TBT) sulfones 9-11 under different reaction conditions. The Julia-Kocienski olefination between alkyl BTFP sulfones 7 and a wide variety of aldehydes affords the corresponding 1,2-disubstituted alkenes and dienes in good yields and stereoselectivities. This one-pot protocol can be performed using KOH at room temperature or the phosphazene bases P2-Et and P4-t-Bu at -78 degrees C or rt and has been successfully used in a high-yielding and stereoselective synthesis of various methoxylated stilbenes such as trimethylated resveratrol. These new reaction conditions for the Julia-Kocienski olefination reaction have been also studied with BT, PT, and TBT sulfones, giving poorer results. Methylenation of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes, ketones, and 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds is carried out through the modified Julia olefination using BTFP methyl sulfone 7d to give terminal alkenes and dienes. Mechanistic studies of the olefination reaction between benzyl BTFP sulfone 7a and aromatic aldehydes performed by KOH-induced Smiles rearrangement of stereodefined syn- and anti-beta-hydroxyalkyl BTFP sulfones indicate that the stereocontrol of the reaction is determined in the elimination step.
