Neuromorphic Engineering in Wetware: Discriminating Acoustic Frequencies through Their Effects on Chemical Waves

Some features of the human nervous system can be mimicked not only through software or hardware but also through liquid solutions of chemical systems maintained under out-of-equilibrium conditions. We describe the possibility of exploiting a thin layer of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction as a surrogate for the cochlea for sensing acoustic frequencies. Experiments and simulations demonstrate that, as in the human ear where the cochlea transduces the mechanical energy of the acoustic frequencies into the electrochemical energy of neural action potentials and the basilar membrane originates topographic representations of sounds, our bioinspired chemoacoustic system, based on the BZ reaction, gives rise to spatiotemporal patterns as the representation of distinct acoustic bands through transduction of mechanical energy into chemical energy. Acoustic frequencies in the range 10-2000 Hz are partitioned into seven distinct bands based on three attributes of the emerging spatiotemporal patterns: (1) the types and frequencies of the chemical waves, (2) their velocities, and (3) the Faraday waves' wavelengths.

Excitability Modulation of Oscillating Media in 3D-Printed Structures

Excitation and oscillation are central to living systems. For excitable systems, which can be brought into oscillation by an external stimulus, the excitation threshold is a crucial parameter. This is evident for neurons, which only generate an action potential when exposed to a sufficiently high concentration of excitatory neurotransmitters, which may only be achieved when multiple presynaptic axons deliver their action potential simultaneously to the synaptic cleft. Dynamic systems composed of relatively simple chemicals are of interest because they can serve as a model for physiological processes or can be exploited to implement chemical computing. With these applications in mind, we have studied the properties of the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction in 3D-printed reaction vessels with open channels of different dimensions. It is demonstrated that the channel geometry can be used to modulate the excitability of the BZ medium, switching a continuously oscillating medium to an excitable medium. Because large networks of channel-connected reaction wells of different depth can easily be fabricated by 3D printing, local excitability modulation could be built into the structure of the reaction vessel itself, opening the way to more extensive experimentation with networks of chemical oscillators.

Propagation of a chemical wave front in a quasi-two-dimensional superdiffusive flow

Pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems is an important self-organizing mechanism in nature. Dynamics of systems with normal diffusion do not always reflect the processes that take place in real systems when diffusion is enhanced by a fluid flow. In such reaction-diffusion-advection systems diffusion might be anomalous for certain time and length scales. We experimentally study the propagation of a chemical wave occurring in a Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction subjected to a quasi-two-dimensional chaotic flow created by the Faraday experiment. We present a novel analysis technique for the local expansion of the active wave front and find evidence of its superdiffusivity. In agreement with these findings the variance σ(2)(t)∝t(γ) of the reactive wave grows supralinear in time with an exponent γ>2. We study the characteristics of the underlying flow with microparticles. By statistical analysis of particle trajectories we derive flight time and jump length distributions and find evidence that tracer-particles undergo complex trajectories related to Lévy statistics. The propagation of active and passive media in the flow is compared.

Simple KBrO3, H2SO4 batch oscillator

KBrO(3) and H(2)SO(4) produce an oscillating system in batch when the proper combination of substrate concentrations, stirring rates, and temperatures is used. Bromide present as an impurity in KBrO(3) also takes part in the reaction. In many Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) systems the above substrates are used and mixed with only an organic substance or with an organic substance and a catalyst, and the simple bromate oscillator cooperates with an organic substance, a catalyst, or both. The bromate oscillator found in this work is the simplest one in the BZ system composed of BrO(3)(-), H(2)SO(4), an organic substance, and a catalyst.

Chemical-wave dynamics in a vertically oscillating fluid layer

Classical Faraday experiments were conducted on the oscillatory chemical Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The vertical periodic modulation of the acceleration induces flows in the system that change the BZ dynamics, and thus the patterns exhibited. The resulting reaction-diffusion-advection system exhibits four different types of pattern for increasing stirring amplitude: deformed targets and spiral waves, filamentary patterns arranged in large-scale vortices, advection phase waves, and finally front annihilation where the medium becomes homogeneous. A wave period analysis of the forced system has been carried out. Contrary to what is expected, i.e., a continuous increase of the wave period with increasing forcing, the period changes dramatically at the boundaries between pattern domains.
