Abstract
The Jahn-Teller (JT) effect, as a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism arising from the coupling between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom, is a widespread phenomenon in molecular and condensed matter systems. Here, we investigate the influence of the JT effect on the photodissociation dynamics of CF3I molecules. Based on ab initio calculation, we obtain the three-dimensional potential energy surfaces for 3Q0+ and 1Q1 states and establish a diabatic Hamiltonian model to study the wavepacket dynamics in the CF3I photodissociation process. Using the wave function of the final state after dissociation, we calculate the rotational density matrix of the CF3 fragment and analyze its rotational excitation under the JT effect, as well as its partial coherence property and selection rules. Our work paves the way to the experimental observation and quantification of the JT effect in molecular dissociation dynamics beyond the classical ball-and-stick model.

Abstract
This work investigates Jahn-Teller conical intersections (CoIns) and the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect on the formations and transformations of the low-lying singlet metal-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) excited states during the ultrafast evolution process of photoexcited [Ru(tpy)2]2+* (tpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). Longuet-Higgins' geometric phase analyses indicate that the potential energy surface (PES) crossing between charge transfer states 1MLCT1 and 1MLCT2 is a CoIn, originating from the change in diabatic Hamiltonian matrix elements around the CoIn. Moreover, an E⊗(b1 + b2) Jahn-Teller distortion can occur around the Franck-Condon and minimal energy CoIn (MECI) configurations, causing the molecule to distort spontaneously from the high-symmetry D2d configuration to C2v symmetry configurations that are close to it. Furthermore, the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect can cause the molecule to distort further from C2v to C1 geometries since the former is a second-order saddle point on the whole dimensional PES but the latter is a true minimum. Eight minima in total are symmetrically distributed around the MECI. These minima are connected by the interligand electron transfer, the charge transfer, and the butterfly-like conformational inversion reactions, all of which have extremely small energy barriers.

Abstract
We calculate differential Shannon entropies derived from time-dependent coordinate-space and momentum-space probability densities. This is performed for a prototype system of a coupled electron-nuclear motion. Two situations are considered, where one is a Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic dynamics, and the other is a diabatic motion involving strong non-adiabatic transitions. The information about coordinate- and momentum-space dynamics derived from the total and single-particle entropies is discussed and interpreted with the help of analytical models. From the entropies, we derive mutual information, which is a measure for the electron-nuclear correlation. In the adiabatic case, it is found that such correlations are manifested differently in coordinate- and momentum space. For the diabatic dynamics, we show that it is possible to decompose the entropies into state-specific contributions.

Abstract
The photochemistry of numerous molecular systems is influenced by conical intersections (CIs). These omnipresent nonadiabatic phenomena provide ultra-fast radiationless relaxation channels by creating degeneracies between electronic states and decide over the final photoproducts. In their presence, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation breaks down, and the timescales of the electron and nuclear dynamics become comparable. Due to the ultra-fast dynamics and the complex interplay between nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom, the direct experimental observation of nonadiabatic processes close to CIs remains challenging. In this article, we give a theoretical perspective on novel spectroscopic techniques capable of observing clear signatures of CIs. We discuss methods that are based on ultra-short laser pulses in the extreme ultraviolet and X-ray regime, as their spectral and temporal resolution allow for resolving the ultra-fast dynamics near CIs.

Abstract
The ultrafast relaxation pathways in a hexaiodide bismuth(III) complex, BiI63-, excited at 530 nm in acetonitrile solution are studied by means of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy supported by steady-state absorption/emission measurements and DFT computations. Radiationless relaxation out of the Franck-Condon, largely metal-centered (MC) triply degenerate 3T1u state (46 ± 19 fs), is driven by vibronic coupling due to the Jahn-Teller effect in the excited state. The relaxation populates two lower-energy states: a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excited state of 3π I(5pπ) → Bi(6p) nature and a luminescent "trap" 3A1u(3P0) MC state. Coherent population transfer from the initial 3T1u into the 3π LMCT state occurs in an oscillatory, stepwise manner at ∼190 and ∼550 fs with a population ratio of ∼4:1. The 3π LMCT state decays with a 2.9 ps lifetime, yielding two short-lived reaction intermediates of which the first one reforms the parent ground state with a 15 ps time constant, and the second one decays on a ∼5 ps timescale generating the triplet product species, which persists to the longest 2 ns delay times investigated. This product is identified as the η2 metal-ligated diiodide-bismuth adduct with the intramolecularly formed I-I bond, [(η2-I2)Bi(II)I4]3-, which is the species of interest for solar energy conversion and storage applications. The lifetime of the "trap" 3A1u state is estimated to be 13 ns from the photoluminescence quenching of BiI63-. The findings give insight into the excited-state relaxation dynamics and the photochemical reaction mechanisms in halide complexes of heavy ns2 metal ions.

Abstract
Nonadiabatic effects are ubiquitous in photophysics and photochemistry, and therefore, many theoretical developments have been made to properly describe them. Conical intersections are central in nonadiabatic processes, as they promote efficient and ultrafast nonadiabatic transitions between electronic states. A proper theoretical description requires developments in electronic structure and specifically in methods that describe conical intersections between states and nonadiabatic coupling terms. This review focuses on the electronic structure aspects of nonadiabatic processes. We discuss the requirements of electronic structure methods to describe conical intersections and nonadiabatic couplings, how the most common excited state methods perform in describing these effects, and what the recent developments are in expanding the methodology and implementing nonadiabatic couplings.

Abstract
The C4H4 isomer cyclobutadiene (CBD) is the prime model for antiaromaticity and thus a molecule of considerable interest in chemistry. Because it is highly reactive, it can only be studied under isolated conditions. Its electronic structure is characterized by a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect in the neutral and a E ⊗ β Jahn-Teller effect in the cation. As a result, recording photoelectron spectra as well as describing them theoretically has been challenging. Here we present the photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectrum of cyclobutadiene together with a simulation based on time-dependent wavepacket dynamics that includes vibronic coupling in the ion, taking into account eight vibrational modes in the cation. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is found, and the ionization energy is revised to 8.06 ± 0.02 eV.

Abstract
In the present work, the valence-bond-based compression approach for diabatization (VBCAD), previously presented in the literature [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2020, 11, 5295-5301] in the case of avoided crossings, is extended to the more general situation of conical intersections and their vicinity. A pointwise phase-correction scheme for diabatic states is proposed, based on the explicit use of the peculiarities of the nonorthogonality of ab initio valence bond (VB) theory. Rather than fitting or propagating nonadiabatic couplings, it allows us to determine the phase of diabatic states consistently and automatically at each geometry point. Moreover, it is shown that the undetermination of degenerate states around a conical intersection can be fixed naturally from a straightforward classical VB picture. These are illustrated with two prototypical symmetry-induced (Jahn-Teller) conical intersection models.

Abstract
Several dinuclear terphenyl phosphine copper(I) halide complexes of composition [CuX(PR2Ar')]2 (X = Cl, Br, I; R = hydrocarbyl, Ar' = 2,6-diarylterphenyl radical), 1-5, have been isolated from the reaction of CuX with 1 equiv of the phosphine ligand. Most of them have been characterized by X-ray diffraction studies in the solid state, thus allowing comparative discussions of different structural parameters, namely, Cu···Cu and Cu···Aryl separations, conformations adopted by coordinated phosphines, and planarity of the Cu2X2 cores. Centrosymmetric complexes [CuI(PMe2ArXyl2)]2, 1c, and [CuI(PEt2ArMes2)]2, 3c, despite their similar structures, show very distinct photoluminescence (PL) in powder form at room temperature. The photophysical behavior of these compounds in liquid solution, solid-solid Zeonex solution and powder samples at room temperature and 77 K have been investigated and supported by DFT calculation. Identification of vibronic coupling modes, done by group theory calculations and the technique of projection operators, shows that the manifestation of these modes is conditioned by crystal packing. Complexes [CuI(PMe2ArXyl2)]2, 1c, and [CuI(PEt2ArMes2)]2, 3c, display remarkable activity in copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions involving preformed and in situ-made azides. Reactions are performed in H2O, under aerobic conditions, with low catalyst loadings and tolerate the use of iodoalkynes as substrates.

Abstract
Azacalixphyrins (ACP) constitute a new class of macrocycles isoelectronic and isostructural to porphyrins. Herein, we report the first theoretical investigation of the properties of the ACP macrocycles metallated at their centre by titanium, platinum, and iron ions. We considered both the original phenyl-type ACP and new pyridyl-type forms. Our results indicate that the metallation greatly impacts the global structure of the macrocycle through pseudo Jahn-Teller effects, giving rise to a possible conformational transition between D2d and S4 structures. Such an effect could not be found in the metal-free ACPs. In addition, we find that, in contrast to the purely singlet platinum ACPs, and the purely triplet iron ACPs, several spin states are energetically close in the titanium ACPs, especially when weak field ligands are bound in axial positions to the metallic centre. According to TD-DFT calculations, metallation also tunes the optical properties. In particular, the absorption band in the near infrared region undergoes a hypsochromic shift of ca. 100-200 nm when going from the D2d to the S4 structures. We quantify how the addition of electroactive ligands in the axial position can increase or tune down these spectral changes. This contribution therefore supports the development of ACP coordination complexes.

Abstract
A multistate density functional theory (MSDFT) is presented in which the energies and densities for the ground and excited states are treated on the same footing using multiconfigurational approaches. The method can be applied to systems with strong correlation and to correctly describe the dimensionality of the conical intersections between strongly coupled dissociative potential energy surfaces. A dynamic-then-static framework for treating electron correlation is developed to first incorporate dynamic correlation into contracted state functions through block-localized Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KSDFT), followed by diagonalization of the effective Hamiltonian to include static correlation. MSDFT can be regarded as a hybrid of wave function and density functional theory. The method is built on and makes use of the current approximate density functional developed in KSDFT, yet it retains its computational efficiency to treat strongly correlated systems that are problematic for KSDFT but too large for accurate WFT. The results presented in this work show that MSDFT can be applied to photochemical processes involving conical intersections.

Abstract
The influence of H-bond geometry on the dynamics of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and photoinduced tautomerization in a series of phenol-quinoline compounds is investigated. Control over the proton donor-acceptor distance (dDA ) and dihedral angle between the proton donor-acceptor subunits is achieved by introducing methylene backbone straps of increasing lengths to link the phenol and quinoline. We demonstrate that a long dDA correlates with a higher barrier for ESIPT, while a large dihedral angle opens highly efficient deactivation channels after ESIPT, preventing the formation of the fully relaxed tautomer photoproduct.

Abstract
The traditional "ball-and-stick" concept of molecular structure fails when the motion of the electrons is coupled to that of the nuclei. Such a situation arises in the Jahn-Teller (JT) effect which is very common in open-shell molecular systems, such as radicals or ions. The JT effect is well known to chemists as a mechanism that causes the distortion of an otherwise symmetric system. Its implications on the dynamics of molecules still represent unsolved problems in many cases. Herein we review recent progress in understanding the dynamic structure of molecular cations that have a high permutational symmetry by using rotationally resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and group theory. Specifically, we show how the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect in the cyclopentadienyl cation causes electronic localization and nuclear delocalization. The fundamental physical mechanisms underlying the vaguely defined concept of "antiaromaticity" are thereby elucidated. Our investigation of the methane cation represents the first experimental characterization of the JT effect in a threefold degenerate electronic state. A special kind of isomerism resulting from the JT effect has been discovered and is predicted to exist in all JT systems in which the minima on the potential-energy surface are separated by substantial barriers.

Abstract
In this work, we investigate general mechanistic principles that control reaction selectivity following S(1)/S(0) internal conversion in benzene. A systematic relationship is drawn between the varying topology of an extended seam of conical intersection and the balance between two competitive radiationless decay channels: photophysical (benzene reactant regeneration) and photochemical (prefulvene product formation). This is supported by a model quantum dynamics study, using a direct dynamics approach based on variational multiconfiguration Gaussian wavepackets, where initial excitation of specific vibrational modes is designed to generate dynamical pathways that reach selected targets regions of the seam. High-energy regions of the seam are found to be sloped and in favor of the photophysical channel, while lower-energy regions are peaked and give access to the photochemical channel. This changeover could in principle be exploited to define targets for optimal control, by exciting different combinations of specific vibronic levels in S(1), accessing different regions of the seam, and giving different products.
