Abstract
In the present article, we use an improved Flory–Rehner theory to describe the swelling behavior of copolymer microgels, where the interaction parameter is modeled by a Hill-like equation for a cooperative thermotropic transition. This description leads to very good fits of the swelling curves of the copolymer microgels at different comonomer contents (30 mol%, 50 mol% and 70 mol%) obtained by photon correlation spectroscopy. Fixed parameters, which are universally applicable for the respective monomers given in our previous work, are used to fit the swelling curves. The analysis of the swelling curves yields physically reasonable and meaningful results for the remaining adjustable parameters. The comonomer content of the statistical copolymer microgels poly(NNPAM-co-NIPAM), poly(NIPAM-co-NIPMAM) and poly(NIPMAM-co-NNPAM) is determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and is in agreement with the nominal comonomer feed used in the synthesis. To investigate the volume phase transition at a molecular level, swelling curves are also measured by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. The obtained swelling curves are also fitted using the Hill-like model. The fits provide physically reasonable parameters too, consistent with the results from photon correlation spectroscopy.

Abstract
We demonstrate liquid-liquid phase separation involving both coacervation and coil-to-globule phase transition of a thermoresponsive polymer. By focusing a near-infrared laser beam into an aqueous solution of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), a single phase-separated polymer microdroplet can be formed and stably trapped at the focal point. Such droplet formation is induced by a local elevation in temperature (induced by a photothermal effect) and an optical force. The technique allows us to selectively analyze a single polymer droplet trapped at the focal point. In this study, we applied this technique to poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEA) in water and generated a double-layered PDEA droplet. Such an inhomogeneous and complex microstructure has not been previously observed both in steady-state heating of a PDEA solution and in the PNIPAM system. Moreover, we used micro-Raman spectroscopy to clarify that PDEA underwent dehydration due to a coil-to-globule phase transition. Despite this, the polymer concentration (Cpoly) of the trapped PDEA droplet was very low and was around 30 wt %. Cpoly depended on the molecular weight of PDEA and the laser power that regulates the temperature elevation. These results strongly indicate that PDEA undergoes coacervation in addition to a coil-to-globule phase transition. This study will help provide us with a fundamental understanding of the phase separation mechanisms of thermoresponsive polymers.

Abstract
In this study we use poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) based copolymer microgels to create free-standing, transferable, thermoresponsive membranes. The microgels are synthesized by copolymerization of NIPAM with 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)–benzophenone (HMABP) and spin-coated on Si wafers. After subsequent cross-linking by UV-irradiation, the formed layers easily detach from the supporting material. We obtain free standing microgel membranes with lateral extensions of several millimetres and an average layer thickness of a few hundred nanometres. They can be transferred to other substrates. As one example for potential applications we investigate the temperature dependent ion transport through the membranes via resistance measurements revealing a sharp reversible increase in resistance when the lower critical solution temperature of the copolymer microgels is reached. In addition, prior to cross-linking, the microgels can be decorated with silver nanoparticles and cross-linked afterwards. Such free-standing nanoparticle hybrid membranes are then used as catalytic systems for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, which is monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy. Cross-linkable microgels are synthesized by copolymerization of NIPAM with 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)–benzophenone (HMABP) and are subsequently UV-cross-linked to obtain smart membranes exhibiting switchable resistance.![]()

Abstract
A series of naphthalimide (NAI)-based red-emissive thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) acrylic monomers has been designed and synthesized. When copolymerized with a host material by Cu(0)-reversible deactivation radical polymerization (Cu(0)-RDRP), polymers exhibiting orange to deep-red TADF were obtained with quantum yields of up to 58% in solution and 31% in the solid state. These emitters exhibit dual emission consisting of high-energy prompt fluorescence from the NAI acceptor (λmax = 340 nm in toluene) and red-delayed fluorescence from the charge-transfer process (λmax = 633-711 nm in toluene). This dual emissive property was utilized to create red-to-blue temperature-responsive polymers by copolymerization of NAI-DMAC with N-isopropylacrylamide and a blue fluorescent dopant. These polymers exhibit red TADF at room temperature and blue fluorescence at 70 °C, with a high ratiometric fluorescent thermal response of 32 ± 4% K-1. Such systems are anticipated to have utility in bioimaging, drug delivery, and temperature sensing, further expanding the range of applications for red TADF materials.

Abstract
The radial density profile of deuterated poly(N,n-propyl acrylamide) shell monomers within core-shell microgels has been studied by small-angle neutron scattering in order to shed light on the origin of their linear thermally-induced swelling. The poly(N-isopropyl methacrylamide) core monomers have been contrast-matched by the H2O/D2O solvent mixture, and the intensity thus provides a direct measurement of the spatial distribution of the shell monomers. Straightforward modelling shows that their structure does not correspond to the expected picture of a well-defined external shell. A multi-shell model solved by a reverse Monte Carlo approach is then applied to extract the monomer density as a function of temperature and of the core crosslinking. It is found that most shell monomers fill the core at high temperatures approaching synthesis conditions of collapsed particles, forming only a dilute corona. As the core monomers tend to swell at lower temperatures, a skeleton of insoluble shell monomers hinders swelling, inducing the progressive linear thermoresponse.

Abstract
Herein, a versatile bilayer system, composed by a polypropylene (PP) mesh and a covalently bonded poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel, is reported. The cell adhesion mechanism was successfully modulated by controlling the architecture of the hydrogel in terms of duration of PNIPAAm grafting time, crosslinker content, and temperature of material exposure in PBS solutions (below and above the LCST of PNIPAAm). The best in vitro results with fibroblast (COS-1) and epithelial (MCF-7) cells was obtained with a mesh modified with a porous iPP-g-PNIPAAm bilayer system, prepared via PNIPAAm grafting for 2 h at the lowest N,N'-methylene bis(acrylamide) (MBA) concentration (1 mM). Under these conditions, the detachment of the fibroblast-like cells was 50% lower than that of the control, after 7 days of cell incubation, which represents a high de-adhesion of cells in a short period. Moreover, the whole system showed excellent stability in dry or wet media, proving that the thermosensitive hydrogel was well adhered to the polymer surface, after PP fibre activation by cold plasma. This study provides new insights on the development of anti-adherent meshes for abdominal hernia repair.

Abstract
Our experiences concerning fluorescent molecular sensing and logic devices and their intersections with polymer science are the foci of this brief review. Proton-, metal ion- and polarity-responsive cases of these devices are placed in polymeric micro- or nano-environments, some of which involve phase separation. This leads to mapping of chemical species on the nanoscale. These devices also take advantage of thermal properties of some polymers in water in order to reincarnate themselves as thermometers. When the phase separation leads to particles, the latter can be labelled with identification tags based on molecular logic. Such particles also give rise to reusable sensors, although molecular-scale resolution is sacrificed in the process. Polymeric nano-environments also help to organize rather complex molecular logic systems from their simple components. Overall, our little experiences suggest that researchers in sensing and logic would benefit if they assimilate polymer concepts.

Abstract
Cationic nanogels of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), including NIPAM-based cationic fluorescent nanogel thermometers, were synthesized with a cationic radical initiator previously developed in our laboratory. These cationic nanogels were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy, as summarized in the temperature-dependent fluorescence response based on the structural change in polyNIPAM units in aqueous solutions. Cellular experiments using HeLa (human epithelial carcinoma) cells demonstrated that NIPAM-based cationic fluorescent nanogel thermometers can spontaneously enter the cells under mild conditions (at 25 °C for 20 min) and can show significant fluorescence enhancement without cytotoxicity with increasing culture medium temperature. The combination of the ability to enter cells and non-cytotoxicity is the most important advantage of cationic fluorescent nanogel thermometers compared with other types of fluorescent polymeric thermometers, i.e., anionic nanogel thermometers and cationic/anionic linear polymeric thermometers.

Abstract
In this study, a commercial and fully flexible monofilament mesh has been used for the deposition of a thermosensitive hydrogel, generated by graft copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and N,N'-methylene bis(acrylamide) (MBA) monomers. The mechanism of adhesion and graft copolymerization have been elucidated combining micro- and standard spectroscopy techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and XPS, before and after the activation of the polypropylene (PP) fibre surface by using oxygen-plasma. The good covalent interactions among NIPAAm monomers and PP fibres, and the hydrogel chain growth in such flexible bidimensional structures, were demonstrated. Additionally, the thermoresponsive properties of PNIPAAm were obtained (VPTT behaviour). The bilayer system is stable below and above a low critical solution temperature (LCST) of 33.2 °C.

Abstract
The effect of deuteration on the volume phase transition (VPT) temperature of poly (N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (pNIPMAM) microgels in aqueous suspension is determined via IR spectroscopy and size measurements by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). We study the effect of a hydrogenated and a deuterated solvent (H2O/D2O), and of the hydrogenated and (partially) deuterated monomer. Deuteration of the monomer or copolymerization with deuterated monomers shifts the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) by up to 8.4 K to higher temperatures, in good agreement with known results for pNIPAM microgels. Moreover, the shape of the swelling curve is found to depend on deuteration, with the highest deuteration leading to the sharpest VPT. Finally, the quantitative agreement between FTIR spectroscopy and PCS evidences the spatial homogeneity of the microgel particles. Our results are rationalized in terms of the effect of deuteration on hydrogen bonding. They shall be of primary importance for any experimental measurements close to the VPT involving isotopic substitution, and in particular contrast variation small angle neutron scattering.

Abstract
We investigate the collective behavior of suspended thermoresponsive microgels that expel solvent and subsequently decrease in size upon heating. Using a binary mixture of differently thermoresponsive microgels, we demonstrate how distinctly different gel structures form, depending on the heating profile used. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) imaging shows that slow heating ramps yield a core-shell network through sequential gelation, while fast heating ramps yield a random binary network through homogelation. Here, secondary particles are shown to aggregate in a monolayer fashion upon the first gel, which can be qualitatively reproduced through Brownian dynamics simulations using a model based on a temperature-dependent interaction potential incorporating steric repulsion and van der Waals attraction. Through oscillatory rheology it is shown that secondary microgel deposition enhances the structural integrity of the previously formed single species gel, and the final structure exhibits higher elastic and loss moduli than its compositionally identical homogelled counterpart. Furthermore, we demonstrate that aging processes in the scaffold before secondary microgel deposition govern the final structural properties of the bigel, which allows a detailed control over these properties. Our results thus demonstrate how the temperature profile can be used to finely control the structural and mechanical properties of these highly tunable materials.

Abstract
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgel particles were prepared via a "classical" surfactant-free precipitation polymerization and a continuous monomer feeding approach. It is anticipated that this yields microgel particles with different internal structures, namely a dense core with a fluffy shell for the classical approach and a more even crosslink distribution in the case of the continuous monomer feeding approach. A thorough structural investigation of the resulting microgels with dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy and small angle neutron scattering was conducted and related to neutron spin echo spectroscopy data. In this way a link between structural and dynamic features of the internal polymer network was made.

Abstract
The breadth of technological applications of smart polymers relies on the possibility of tuning their molecular structure to respond to external stimuli. In this context, N-substituted acrylamide-based polymers are widely studied thermoresponsive polymers. Poly(N-n-propylacrylamide) (PNnPAm), which is a structural isomer of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) exhibits however, a lower phase transition in aqueous solution. In this work, we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of PNnPAm in aqueous solutions to study, from a microscopic point-of-view, the influence of chain size and concentration on the LCST of PNnPAm. Our analysis shows that the collapse of a single oligomer of PNnPAm upon heating is dependent on the chain length and corresponds to a complex interplay between hydration and intermolecular interactions. Analysis of systems with multiple chains shows an aggregation of PNnPAm chains above the LCST.

Abstract
Temperature is a significant parameter to regulate biological reactions and functions inside cells. Sensing the intracellular temperature with a competent method is necessary to understand life science. In this work, an energy-transfer polymeric thermometer was designed for temperature sensing. The thermometer was prepared from two thermo-responsive polymers with different lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) of 31.1 °C and 48.6 °C, coupling with blue and red fluorescent molecules, respectively, developed for ratiometric temperature sensing based on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism. The polymers were synthesized from two monomers, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and N-isopropylmethacrylamide (NIPmA), which provided different temperature responses. The fluorescent intensity of each polymer (peaked at 436 and 628 nm, respectively) decreased upon the heating of the polymer aqueous solution. While these two polymer aqueous solutions were mixed, the fluorescent intensity decrease at 436 nm and substantial fluorescence enhancement at 628 nm was observed with the increasing temperature due to FRET effect. The cell imaging of HeLa cells by these thermo-responsive polymers was explored. The difference of LCSTs resulting in ratiometric fluorescence change would have a potential impact on the various biomedical applications.

Abstract
A series of new fluorescent dye bearing monomers, including glycomonomers, based on maleamide and maleic esteramide was synthesized. The dye monomers were incorporated by radical copolymerization into thermo-responsive poly(N‑vinyl-caprolactam) that displays a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in aqueous solution. The effects of the local molecular environment on the polymers' luminescence, in particular on the fluorescence intensity and the extent of solvatochromism, were investigated below as well as above the phase transition. By attaching substituents of varying size and polarity in the close vicinity of the fluorophore, and by varying the spacer groups connecting the dyes to the polymer backbone, we explored the underlying structure⁻property relationships, in order to establish rules for successful sensor designs, e.g., for molecular thermometers. Most importantly, spacer groups of sufficient length separating the fluorophore from the polymer backbone proved to be crucial for obtaining pronounced temperature regulated fluorescence responses.

Non-plasmonic nanoantennas for surface enhanced spectroscopies with ultra-low heat conversion. Nat Commun 2015; 6:7915. Abstract
Nanoplasmonics has recently revolutionized our ability to control light on the nanoscale. Using metallic nanostructures with tailored shapes, it is possible to efficiently focus light into nanoscale field ‘hot spots'. High field enhancement factors have been achieved in such optical nanoantennas, enabling transformative science in the areas of single molecule interactions, highly enhanced nonlinearities and nanoscale waveguiding. Unfortunately, these large enhancements come at the price of high optical losses due to absorption in the metal, severely limiting real-world applications. Via the realization of a novel nanophotonic platform based on dielectric nanostructures to form efficient nanoantennas with ultra-low light-into-heat conversion, here we demonstrate an approach that overcomes these limitations. We show that dimer-like silicon-based single nanoantennas produce both high surface enhanced fluorescence and surface enhanced Raman scattering, while at the same time generating a negligible temperature increase in their hot spots and surrounding environments. Metallic nanoantennas can enhance and confine electromagnetic fields, however, localized heating hinders many applications. Here, Caldarola et al. demonstrate both high near-field enhancement and ultra-low heat conversion in the visible-near infrared region using silicon dimer nanoantennas with 20 nm gaps.

Abstract
Intracellular temperature plays a prominent role in cellular functions and biochemical activities inside living cells, but effective intracellular temperature sensing and imaging is still in its infancy. Herein, thermoresponsive double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs)-based fluorescent thermometers were fabricated to investigate their application in intracellular temperature imaging. Blue-emitting coumarin monomer, CMA, green-emitting 7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) monomer, NBDAE, and red-emitting rhodamine B monomer, RhBEA, were copolymerized separately with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) to afford dye-labeled PEG-b-P(NIPAM-co-CMA), PEG-b-P(NIPAM-co-NBDAE), and PEG-b-P(NIPAM-co-RhBEA). Because of the favorable fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) potentials between CMA and NBDAE, NBDAE and RhBEA, as well as the slight tendency between CMA and RhBEA fluorophore pairs, three polymeric thermometers based on traditional one-step FRET were fabricated by facile mixing two of these three fluorescent DHBCs, whereas exhibiting limited advantages. Thus, two-step cascade FRET among three polymeric fluorophores was further interrogated, in which NBD acted as a bridging dye by transferring energy from CMA to RhBEA. Through the delicate optimization of the molar contents of three polymeric components, a ∼8.4-fold ratio change occurred in the temperature range of 20-44 °C, and the detection sensitivity improved significantly, reached as low as ∼0.4 °C, which definitely outperformed other one-step FRET thermometers in the intracellular temperature imaging of living cells. To our knowledge, this work represents the first example of polymeric ratiometric thermometer employing thermoresponsive polymer-based cascade FRET mechanism.

Abstract
We investigate the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), of carbon nanotube composites with the phase-change polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). Our results shed light on the underlying mechanism of electron transport through networks of conductive paths in the composites and its dependence on the molecular weights (MWs) of the phase-changing polymer. Measurements of the humidity dependence of the TCR reveal the dominant conduction mechanism to be variable range hopping with an exponent of ¼, corresponding to transport in a 3D system. In a humid atmosphere, a twenty-fold change in the hopping activation energy is observed as the temperature is swept across the polymer's hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic phase-transition, while no change is observed in low humidity atmospheres or in vacuum. The TCR was found to depend on MW but to also be affected by details of the dynamics of hydration/dehydration of the composites. For operation in dry atmospheres and in vacuum the maximum TCR observed was only .002%, while in a humid atmosphere the TCR as large as 60% were observed-an order of magnitude higher than those found in common high-TCR materials used in thermal sensing applications.
