Syntheses and reactions of the bis-boryloxide O(Bpin)2(pin = O2C2Me4)

Lithium, Tin(II), and Zinc Amino-Boryloxy Complexes: Synthesis and Characterization

Analogous to the ubiquitous alkoxide ligand, metal boroxide and boryloxy complexes are an underexplored class of hard anionic O- ligand. A new series of amine-stabilized Li, Sn(II), and Zn boryloxy complexes, comprising electron-rich tetrahedral boron centers have been synthesized and characterized. All complexes have been characterized by one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and DOSY NMR, which are consistent with the solid-state structures unambiguously determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electron-rich μ2- (Sn and Zn) and μ3- (Li) boryloxy binding modes are observed. Compounds 6-9 are the first complexes of this class, with the chelating bis- and tris-phenol ligands providing a scaffold that can be easily functionalized and provides access to the boronic acid pro-ligand, hence allowing facile direct synthesis of the resulting compounds. Computational quantum chemical studies suggest a significant enhancement of the π-donor ability of the amine-stabilized boryloxy ligand because of electron donation from the amine functionality into the p-orbital of the boron atom.

Nickel-mediated N-N bond formation and N2O liberation via nitrogen oxyanion reduction

The syntheses of (DIM)Ni(NO₃)₂ and (DIM)Ni(NO₂)₂, where DIM is a 1,4-diazadiene bidentate donor, are reported to enable testing of bis boryl reduced N-heterocycles for their ability to carry out stepwise deoxygenation of coordinated nitrate and nitrite, forming O(Bpin)₂. Single deoxygenation of (DIM)Ni(NO₂)₂ yields the tetrahedral complex (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO), with a linear nitrosyl and κ¹-ONO. Further deoxygenation of (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO) results in the formation of dimeric [(DIM)Ni(NO)]₂, where the dimer is linked through a Ni–Ni bond. The lost reduced nitrogen byproduct is shown to be N₂O, indicating N–N bond formation in the course of the reaction. Isotopic labelling studies establish that the N–N bond of N₂O is formed in a bimetallic Ni₂ intermediate and that the two nitrogen atoms of (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO) become symmetry equivalent prior to N–N bond formation. The [(DIM)Ni(NO)]₂ dimer is susceptible to oxidation by AgX (X = NO₃⁻, NO₂⁻, and OTf⁻) as well as nitric oxide, the latter of which undergoes nitric oxide disproportionation to yield N₂O and (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO). We show that the first step in the deoxygenation of (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO) to liberate N₂O is outer sphere electron transfer, providing insight into the organic reductants employed for deoxygenation. Lastly, we show that at elevated temperatures, deoxygenation is accompanied by loss of DIM to form either pyrazine or bipyridine bridged polymers, with retention of a BpinO⁻ bridging ligand.

Deoxygenation of nitrogen oxyanions coordinated to nickel using reduced borylated heterocycles leads to N–N bond formation and N₂O liberation. The nickel dimer product facilitates NO disproportionation, leading to a synthetic cycle.

Zinc Hydride Catalyzed Chemoselective Hydroboration of Isocyanates: Amide Bond Formation and C=O Bond Cleavage

Herein, a remarkable conjugated bis-guanidinate (CBG) supported zinc hydride, [{LZnH}₂ ; L={(ArHN)(ArN)-C=N-C=(NAr)(NHAr); Ar=2,6-Et₂ -C₆ H₃ }] (I) catalyzed partial reduction of heteroallenes via hydroboration is reported. A large number of aryl and alkyl isocyanates, including electron-donating and withdrawing groups, undergo reduction to obtain selectively N-boryl formamide, bis(boryl) hemiaminal and N-boryl methyl amine products. The compound I effectively catalyzes the chemoselective reduction of various isocyanates, in which the construction of the amide bond occurs. Isocyanates undergo a deoxygenation hydroboration reaction, in which the C=O bond cleaves, leading to N-boryl methyl amines. Several functionalities such as nitro, cyano, halide, and alkene groups are well-tolerated. Furthermore, a series of kinetic, control experiments and structurally characterized intermediates suggest that the zinc hydride species are responsible for all reduction steps and breaking the C=O bond.

Synthesis and reactivity of boryloxorhodium complexes. Relevance to intermolecular transmetalation from boron to rhodium in Rh-catalyzed reactions

The synthesis of a dimeric boryloxorhodium complex having the Rh-O-Bpin scaffold from the reaction of [(cod)Rh(OMe)]2 or [(cod)Rh(OH)]2 with an arylboronate has been achieved. The obtained dirhodium complex is converted into mononuclear complex [(cod)Rh(OBpin)(PPh3)], which reacts with arylboronic acid to afford the complex with an Rh-aryl bond via transmetalation from boron to rhodium. The dimeric boryloxorhodium complex catalyzes the 1,4-addition of arylboronic acid to cyclohexene-2-one.

The Influence of Weakly Coordinating Cations on the O-H⋅⋅⋅O- Hydrogen Bond of Silanol-Silanolate Anions

The reaction of a saline phosphazenium hydroxide hydrate with siloxanes led to a novel kind of silanol-silanolate anions. The weakly coordinating behavior of the cation renders the formation of silanol-silanolate hydrogen bonds possible, which otherwise suffer from detrimental silanolate-oxygen cation interactions. We investigated the influence of various weakly coordinating cations on silanol-silanolate motifs, particularly with regard to different cation sizes. While large cations favor the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds resulting in cyclic structures, the less bulky tetramethyl ammonium cation encourages the formation of polyanionic silanol-silanolate chains in the solid state.

Catalytic Activation of N2O at a Low-Valent Bismuth Redox Platform

Herein we present the catalytic activation of N₂O at a Bi^I⇄Bi^III redox platform. The activation of such a kinetically inert molecule was achieved by the use of bismuthinidene catalysts, aided by HBpin as reducing agent. The protocol features remarkably mild conditions (25 °C, 1 bar N₂O), together with high turnover numbers (TON, up to 6700) and turnover frequencies (TOF). Analysis of the elementary steps enabled structural characterization of catalytically relevant intermediates after O-insertion, namely a rare arylbismuth oxo dimer and a unique monomeric arylbismuth hydroxide. This protocol represents a distinctive example of a main-group redox cycling for the catalytic activation of N₂O.

Double uranium oxo cations derived from uranyl by borane or silane reduction

A new type of double uranium oxo cation [O-U-O-U-O]4+ is prepared by selective oxygen-atom abstraction from macrocyclic uranyl complexes using either boranes or silanes. A significant degree of multiple U[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonding is evident throughout the U2O3 core, but either trans-,cis- or trans-,trans-OUOUO motifs can be isolated as boron- or silicon-capped oxo complexes. Further controlled deoxygenation of the borylated system is also possible.

Hydrodeoxygenation of isocyanates: snapshots of a magnesium-mediated C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond cleavage

Organic isocyanates are readily converted to methyl amine products through their hydroboration with HBpin in the presence of a β-diketiminato magnesium catalyst. Although borylated amide and N-,O-bis(boryl)hemiaminal species have been identified as intermediates during the reductive catalysis, the overall reduction and C-O activation is metal-mediated and proposed to occur through the further intermediacy of well-defined magnesium formamidato, formamidatoborate and magnesium boryloxide derivatives. Examples of all these species have been identified and fully characterised through stoichiometric reactivity studies and the stability of the borate species leads us to suggest that, under catalytic conditions, the onward progress of the deoxygenation reaction is crucially dependent on the further activation provided by the Lewis acidic HBpin substrate. These deductions have been explored and ratified through a DFT study.

Morin P, Westcott SA. Synthesis, characterization, and anticancer properties of iminophosphineplatinum(II) complexes containing boronate esters

Three new iminophosphines containing pinacol-derived boronate esters have been prepared and ligated to dichloridoplatinum(II) fragments. All compounds have been characterized fully, including an X-ray diffraction study carried out for the platinum complex 8, which is derived from 4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)aniline. These three new platinum complexes, along with the non-boron containing control, have been examined for their initial cytotoxic properties against two glioma cell lines using the MTT method.

Synthesis, characterization, and anticancer properties of organometallic Schiff base platinum complexes

A small family of organometallic platinum complexes containing a chloride, cis-cyclooctene, and a Schiff base ligand have been prepared and characterized fully. Three aliphatic amines and four aromatic amines were chosen as representative examples. All complexes were stable in air except for 7, derived from the pinacol-protected 4-aminophenylboronate ester 4-H2NC6H4Bpin (pin = 1,2-O2C2Me4), which decomposed via B–C bond cleavage. Both complexes 4 (derived from aniline) and 7 were further characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and confirmed the square planar nature of the platinum centre whereby the chloride ligand lies trans to the deprotonated hydroxyl group of the Schiff base ligand. The imine functionality is trans to the organic cyclooctene group. Complex 3, which contained the longest aliphatic chain studied (an octyl group), was the most promising for inducing apoptosis in the malignant MB231 breast cancer cell line. Conversely, complexes 4–6, which contained aromatic groups, were the most active against renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cell lines.

Selective reduction of CO2 to a methanol equivalent by B(C6F5)3-activated alkaline earth catalysis

Magnesium and calcium hydrido-tris(pentafluorophenyl)borate derivatives catalyse the completely selective reductive hydroboration of CO₂ with pinacolborane (HBpin) to provide the methanol equivalent, CH₃OBpin.

Reduction of amine N-oxides by diboron reagents

Facile reduction of alkylamino-, anilino-, and pyridyl-N-oxides can be achieved via the use of diboron reagents, predominantly bis(pinacolato)- and in some cases bis(catecholato)diboron [(pinB)(2) and (catB)(2), respectively]. Reductions occur upon simply mixing the amine N-oxide and the diboron reagent in a suitable solvent, at a suitable temperature. Extremely fast reductions of alkylamino- and anilino-N-oxides occur, whereas pyridyl-N-oxides undergo slower reduction. The reaction is tolerant of a variety of functionalities such as hydroxyl, thiol, and cyano groups, as well as halogens. Notably, a sensitive nucleoside N-oxide has also been reduced efficiently. The different rates with which alkylamino- and pyridyl-N-oxides are reduced has been used to perform stepwise reduction of the N,N'-dioxide of (S)-(-)-nicotine. Because it was observed that (pinB)(2) was unaffected by the water of hydration in amine oxides, the feasibility of using water as solvent was evaluated. These reactions also proceeded exceptionally well, giving high product yields. In constrast to the reactions with (pinB)(2), triethylborane reduced alkylamino-N-oxides, but pyridine N-oxide did not undergo efficient reduction even at elevated temperature. Finally, the mechanism of the reductive process by (pinB)(2) has been probed by (1)H and (11)B NMR.

PXPd-catalyzed borylation of aniline derivatives

Addition of pinacolborane (HBO2C2Me4) to 2-iodoaniline can be catalyzed using a number of palladium complexes, including [(t-Bu)2PCl]2PdCl2 (PXPd), to give the corresponding boronate ester 2-H2NC6H4(BO2C2Me4) in excellent yields. The PXPd system could also be used in the catalyzed borylation of substituted anilines to give the corresponding aminoboronate esters in moderate to high yields.

Boron and Aluminum Complexes of Sterically Demanding Phosphinimines and Phosphinimides

Reactions of sterically demanding phosphinimines R3PNH [R=i-Pr (1), t-Bu (2)] were examined. Reactions with B(C6F5)3 formed the adducts (R3PNH)B(C6F5)3 [R=i-Pr (3), t-Bu (4)] in high yield. On the other hand, 2 reacts with HB(OBu)2, evolving H2 to give t-Bu3PNB(OBu)2 (5). The reaction of 2 equiv of 2 with BH3.SMe2 affords the species (t-Bu3PN)2BH (6). In contrast, the reaction of n-Bu(t-Bu)2PNH with BH3.SMe2 results in the formation of the robust adduct n-Bu(t-Bu)2PNH.BH3 (8). An alternative route to borane-phosphinimide complexes involves Me3SiCl elimination, as exemplified by the reaction of BCl2Ph with n-Bu3PNSiMe3, which gives the product n-Bu3PNBCl(Ph) (9). The corresponding reactions of the parent phosphinimines 1 and 2 with AlH3.NMe2Et give the dimers [(mu-i-Pr3PN)AlH2]2 (10) and [(mu-t-Bu3PN)AlH2]2 (11). Species 11 reacts further with Me3SiO3SCF3 to provide [(mu-t-Bu3PN)AlH(OSO2CF3)]2 (12). The reaction of the lithium salt [t-Bu3PNLi]4 (13) with BCl3 proceeds smoothly to give t-Bu3PNBCl2 (14), which is readily alkylated to give t-Bu3PNBMe2 (15). Subsequent reaction of 15 with B(C6F5)3 results in methyl abstraction and the formation of [(mu-t-Bu3PN)BMe]2[MeB(C6F5)3]2 (16). The reaction of 13 in a 2:1 ratio with BCl3 gives the salt [(t-Bu3PN)2B]Cl (17). This species can be methylated to give (t-Bu3PN)2BMe (18), which undergoes subsequent reaction with [Ph3C][X] (X=[B(C6F5)4], [PF6]) to form the related salts [(t-Bu3PN)2B][B(C6F5)4] (19) and [(t-Bu3PN)2B][PF6] (20), respectively. Analogous reactions with [Ph3C][BF4] afforded [t-Bu3PNBF2]2 (21). Compounds 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 17, 19, and 21 were characterized by X-ray crystallography.
