Abstract
Mounting evidence suggests an important role of cyclodextrins in providing protection in neurodegenerative disorders. Metal dyshomeostasis is reported to be a pathogenic factor in neurodegeneration because it could be responsible for damage involving oxidative stress and protein aggregation. As such, metal ions represent an effective target. To improve the metal-binding ability of cyclodextrin, we synthesized three new 8-hydroxyquinoline-cyclodextrin conjugates with difunctionalized cyclodextrins. In particular, the 3-difunctionalized regioisomer represents the first example of cyclodextrin with two pendants at the secondary rim, resulting in a promising compound. The derivatives have significant antioxidant capacity and the powerful activity in inhibiting self-induced amyloid-β aggregation seems to be led by synergistic effects of both cyclodextrin and hydroxyquinoline. Moreover, the derivatives are also able to complex metal ions and to inhibit metal-induced protein aggregation. Therefore, these compounds could have potential as therapeutic agents in diseases related to protein aggregation and metal dyshomeostasis.

Abstract
Thrombosis disease has been the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the discovery of antithrombotic agents, three complexes of Cu2+ and repetitive arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) sequences, Cu(II)-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (Cu[II]-4a), Cu(II)-Arg-Gly-Asp-Val-Arg-Gly-Asp-Val (Cu[II]-4b), and Cu(II)-Arg-Gly-Asp-Phe-Arg-Gly-Asp-Phe (Cu[II]-4c), were previously reported, of which Cu(II)-4a and Cu(II)-4c possessed the highest in vitro and in vivo activity, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images visualized that Cu(II)-4a and Cu(II)-4c formed nanoaggregates and nanoparticles, respectively. However, the details of the formation of the nanospecies complexes and of the mechanism for inhibiting thrombosis remain to be clarified. For this purpose, this study designed a novel complex of Cu(II) and the RGD octapeptide, Arg-Gly-Asp-Phe-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (RGDFRGDS), consisting of Arg-Gly-Asp-Phe of Cu(II)-4c and Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser of Cu(II)-4a, to colligate their biological and nanostructural benefits. In contrast with Cu(II)-4a, -4b, and -4c, Cu(II)-RGDFRGDS (Cu2+-FS) had high antiplatelet and antithrombotic activities, with the formed nanoparticles having a porous surface. Additionally, this paper evidenced the dimer had the basic structural unit of Cu2+-FS in water, theoretically simulated the formation of Cu2+-FS nanoparticles, and identified that Cu2+-FS activity in decreasing glycoprotein IIb/IIIa, P-selectin, and IL-8 was responsible for the antithrombotic action. Finally, adherence onto the surface and entry into the cytoplasm were considered the steps of a two-step model for the blocking of platelet activation by Cu2+-FS nanoparticles. Findings indicated that the antiplatelet aggregation activity of Cu2+-FS was 10–52 times higher than that of RGDFRGDS, while the effective dose for antithrombotic action was 5,000 times lower than that of RGDFRGDS.

Abstract
Stereoselective amino acid analysis has increasingly moved into the scope of interest of the scientific community. In this work, we report a study on the chiral recognition of D,L-Trp and D,L-His using L -Cys-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and copper(II) ion. In the L -Cys-capped AuNPs, the thiol group of the amino acid interacts with AuNPs through the formation of Au–S bond, whereas the α-amino and α-carboxyl groups of the surface-confined cysteine can coordinate the copper(II) ion, which in turn, binds the L- or D-amino acid present in solution forming diastereoisomeric complexes. The resulting systems have been characterized by UV–Vis spectra and dynamic light scattering measurements, obtaining different results for L- and D-Trp, as well as for L- and D-His. The knowledge of the solution equilibria of the investigated systems allowed us to accurately calculate in advance the concentrations of the species presentin solution and to optimize the system performances, highlighting the pivotal role of copper(II) ion in the enantiodiscrimination processes.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligomers of alpha-1,4-linked D-glucopyranose. Due to their unique structure, marked by a chiral and hydrophobic cavity, CDs have been extensively used as chiral selectors and drug delivery systems. The functionalization both improve the CD applications and widen their use in many other fields, such as molecular recognition and enzyme mimicking. Moreover, the functionalization highly increases the metal binding properties of the CDs. This critical review is a report of recent applications concerning the CD derivatives and their metal complexes. The metal ion assists the host-guest interaction often increasing the properties of CDs to act as chiral receptors. Furthermore, it can act as a catalytic center in the mimicking of metalloenzymes based on functionalized CDs (164 references).

Abstract
Capillary EKC has been established as a versatile and robust CE method for the separation of enantiomers. Within the chiral selectors added to the BGE CDs continue as the most widely used selectors due to their structural variety and commercial availability. This is reflected in the large number of practical applications of CDs to analytical enantioseparations that have been reported between January 2006 and January 2008, the period of time covered by this review. Most of these applications cover aspects of life sciences such as drug analysis, bioanalysis, environmental analysis, or food analysis. Moreover, new CD derivatives have been developed in an attempt to achieve altered enantioselectivities and to further broaden the application range. Finally, efforts will be summarized that aim at an understanding of the molecular level of the chiral recognition between CDs and the analytes.

Abstract
This paper deals with comparative studies on the use of copper(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes of d-gluconic acid, d-saccharic acid and l-threonic acid as chiral selectors for the enantioseparation of aromatic amino acids and glycyl dipeptides using the principle of ligand-exchange capillary electrophoresis. Although copper(II) is the most frequently used central ion in ligand-exchange capillary electrophoresis, in the case of d-gluconic acid cobalt(II) was shown to be an alternative for the enantioseparation of amino acids. Glycyl dipeptides, however, were resolved only with copper(II) complexes. Zn(II) as a central ion was not effective in all cases and with Ni(II) only some partial separations were achieved.

The separation of enantiomers using electrokinetic chromatography (EKC) with chiral microemulsions is comprehensively reviewed through December 1, 2006. Aqueous chiral EKC separations based on other pseudostationary phases such as micelles and vesicles or on other chiral selectors such as CDs, crown ethers, glycopeptides, ligand exchange moeities are also reviewed from both mechanistic and applications perspective for the period of January 2005 to December 1, 2006.

Abstract
A capped derivative of beta-CD (THALAH) was synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy at different pH values. A trehalose moiety, bonded through beta-alanine bridges to the CD cavity, is included in the capping unit, giving peculiar properties to this molecule. The hemispherodextrin thus obtained was tested as a chiral selector in EKC. At neutral pH, the monocationic species of THALAH behaves as a very efficient selector separating successfully all the 11 tested enantiomeric pairs of dansyl-derivatives of amino acids, some of them even at concentrations as low as 0.15 mM. The differences observed in the migration order among the different systems give suggestions about the mechanism of molecular recognition between the selector and the analytes.

Enantiomeric pairs of 11 dansyl derivatives of alpha-amino acids were used as analytes in electrokinetic chromatography to test the ability as chiral selectors of two pure derivatives of beta-cyclodextrin: the ethylendiamine derivative in primary position (CDen) and a member of a new class of receptors, the cysteamine-bridged hemispherodextrin THCMH. The selectivity obtained by the presence of the hemispherodextrin, appears particularly promising as shown by the large values of resolution obtained. The importance of a detailed analysis of these data is discussed in terms of suggestions for a rational approach to separation science.

Abstract
This review gives an overview of recent developments in CZE, EKC, and CEC covering the literature since the year 2004. Since there appeared a special issue on applications, this review focuses on the progress in electromigration techniques and new methodological developments. New techniques, new chiral selectors as well as new chiral stationary phases for CEC are discussed.

Abstract
Several in vitro and in vivo studies have suggested that carnosine (beta-alanil-L-histidine) and homocarnosine (beta-aminobutyril-L-histidine) can act as scavengers of reactive oxygen species. beta-Cyclodextrin was functionalized with homocarnosine, obtaining the following new bioconjugate isomers: 6(A)-[(4-{[(1S)-1-carboxy-2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethyl]amino}-4-oxobutyl)amino]-6(A)-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin and (2(A)S,3(A)R)-3A-[(4-{[(1S)-1-carboxy-2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethyl]amino}-4-oxobutyl)amino]-3(A)-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin. Pulse radiolysis investigations show that the beta-cyclodextrin homocarnosine bioconjugates are scavengers of (*)OH radicals because of the formation of stable imidazole-centered radicals and the scavenger ability of glucose molecules of the macrocycle. The ability of these new beta-cyclodextrin derivatives to inhibit the copper(II) driven LDL oxidation was determined in comparison with that displayed by the analogous carnosine derivatives. Both the beta-cyclodextrin carnosine isomers show a higher protective effect than that of free dipeptide and homocarnosine derivatives, bringing into light the role of the beta-CD cavity. The ability of these new beta-cyclodextrin derivatives to inhibit the copper(II) driven LDL oxidation was determined in comparison with that displayed by the analogous carnosine derivatives. Both the beta-cyclodextrin carnosine isomers show a higher protective effect than that of free dipeptide and homocarnosine derivatives, bringing into light the role of the beta-CD cavity.

Abstract
Five pure CD derivatives synthesized in our laboratory were used as chiral selectors in the presence of copper(II) ion. Three enantiomeric pairs of amino acids were submitted to separation experiments in CE, by exploiting the ligand exchange mechanism. The results obtained in the investigated systems, together with those of the analogous systems previously studied, clearly show the usefulness of this technique in chiral separations. By comparing the ligand exchange CE results with potentiometric results, either reported elsewhere or studied here for the first time (system Cu/CDampy/tyrosine), it has been possible to rationalise the separation results. The importance of the availability of pure selectors, and to characterise them both spectroscopically and thermodynamically is discussed.
