Abstract
The synthesis of the asymmetric ligand 3-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-5-amine (L1) and its single-crystal X-ray structure are reported. L1 displays crystallographic symmetry (orthorhombic, Pccn) higher than its molecular symmetry (point group C1) and also displays supercooling, with a difference in the melting and solidification points of over 100 °C. Upon complexation with ZnCl2, L1 engages in both primary cation and secondary anion coordination via hydrogen bonding, and the complex exhibits a room-to-low-temperature single crystal-to-crystal phase transition. The ZnCl2 complex becomes a birefringent fluid mixed with crystalline domains at high temperatures, as detected by polarized optical microscopy. Examination of the photoluminescence properties showed that the emission intensity increased and a pronounced bathochromic shift was observed in the emission maximum upon going from solution to the solid state, for both the ligand and complex, consistent with aggregation-induced emission behavior.

Abstract
Amide-functionalised salen ligands capable of extracting metal salts have been synthesised and characterised. Single-crystal X-ray structure determinations of complexes of NiSO4, [Ni(L)(SO4)], confirm that the ionophores are in a zwitterionic form with Ni(II) bound in the deprotonated salen moiety and the SO4(2-) ion associated with protonated pendant N'-amidopiperazine groups. Treatment of [Ni(L)(SO4)] with base removes the protons from the pendant amido-amine group resulting in loss of the SO4(2-) ion and formation of metal-only complexes of type [Ni(L-2H)], which have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Three of the ligands with solubilities suitable for solvent extraction studies show loading and stripping pH-profiles that are suitable for the recovery of CuSO4 or CuCl2 from industrial leach solutions. The copper-only complexes, [Cu(L-2H)], are selective for Cl- over SO4(2-) in both solvent extraction and bulk liquid membrane transport experiments and were found to bind Cl- in two steps via the formation of a 1:1:1 [Cu(L-H)Cl] assembly, followed by a 1:1:2 [Cu(L)Cl2] assembly as the pH of the aqueous phase is lowered. The anion transport selectivity was evaluated for a number of other mono-charged anions and interestingly the ligands were found to display a preference for the Br- ion. To probe the influence of the Hofmeister bias on the selectivity of anion complexation, single-phase potentiometric titration experiments were employed to investigate the binding of SO4(2-) and Cl- by one of the copper only complexes, [Cu(L-2H)] in 95 %/5 % MeOH/water. Under these conditions selectivity was reversed (SO4(2-)>Cl-) confirming that the Hofmeister bias, which reflects the relative hydration energies of the anions, dominates the selectivity of anion extraction from aqueous media into CHCl3.

Abstract
Treatment of CuF(2) with 2 equiv of 3{5}-[pyrid-2-yl]pyrazole (Hpz(Py)), 3{5}-phenylpyrazole (Hpz(Ph)) or 3{5}-[4-fluorophenyl]pyrazole (Hpz(PhF)) in MeOH, followed by evaporation to dryness and recrystallisation of the solid residues, allows solvated crystals of [{Cu(micro-pz(Py))(pz(Py))}(2)] (1), [{Cu(micro-pz(Ph))(2)}(4)] (2) and [Cu(4)F(2)(micro(4)-F)(micro-pz(PhF))(5)(Hpz(PhF))(4)] (3) to be isolated in moderate-to-good yields. Similar reactions of these three pyrazoles with Cu(OH)(2) in refluxing MeOH respectively afford 1, 2 and [Cu(pz(PhF))(2)(Hpz(PhF))(2)] (4) in ca. 10% yield. Crystalline 1 x 1/2H(2)O x 2CHCl(3) contains two independent dinuclear molecules with a puckered di-(1,2-pyrazolido) bridge motif, linked by a bridging, hydrogen-bonding water molecule. Compound 2 x 1/2C(5)H(12), containing cyclic, square tetranuclear complex molecules, is the first homoleptic divalent metal pyrazolide to have a discrete molecular rather than polymeric structure, for a metal other than Pd or Pt. The two independent complex molecules in 3 x 3/4CH(2)Cl(2) x Hpz(PhF) contain a unique tetrahedral [Cu(4)(micro(4)-F)](7+) core, three of whose edges are spanned by bridging pyrazolido groups. Magnetic data show that the copper centres in 1 and 3 are antiferromagnetically coupled, but that dried bulk samples of 2 do not retain their molecular structure.
