Weak antiferromagnetic coupling for novel linear hexanuclear nickel(II) string complexes (Ni6 12+) and partial metal-metal bonds in their one-electron reduction products (Ni6 11+)

Improving the Solubility of Hexanuclear Heterometallic Extended Metal Atom Chain Compounds in Nonpolar Solvents by Introducing Alkyl Amine Moieties

The highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) interaction at the d _{z ²} orbital between two kinds of metal complex is useful for obtaining heterometallic one-dimensional (1D) chains as well as heterometallic metal string compounds (HMSCs). Platinum dinuclear complexes, [Pt₂(piam)₂(NH₂R)₄]X₂ (piam = pivalamidate, R = CH₃, C₂H₅, C₃H₇, or C₄H₉, X = anion), comprising σ* as HOMO were mixed with [Rh₂(O₂CCH₃)₄] comprising σ* as LUMO in solvents to afford single crystals of [{Rh₂(O₂CCH₃)₄}{Pt₂(piam)₂(NH₂R)₄}₂]X₄ (2-5). Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that 2-5 are hexanuclear complexes that are one-dimensionally aligned as Pt-Pt-Rh-Rh-Pt-Pt with metal-metal bonds, where the alkyl moieties at end Pt atoms obstruct further 1D extension. Complexes 2-5 appear as if they are cut off from an infinite chain [{Rh₂(O₂CCH₃)₄}{Pt₂(piam)₂(NH₃)₄}₂] _n (PF₆)_4n ·6nH₂O (1) aligned as -{Pt-Pt-Rh-Rh-Pt-Pt} _n -. The diffuse reflectance spectrum of 1 depicts broad shoulder bands, which are not present in the spectra of 2-5, proving that the infinite chain 1 forms a band structure. Compounds 4 and 5 with propyl or butyl moieties at amine ligands, respectively, are soluble in nonpolar solvents, such as CH₂Cl₂, without the dissociation of their hexanuclear structures. Taking advantage of their solubility, measurement of cyclic voltammetry in CH₂Cl₂ become possible, which shows the quasi-reversible oxidation and reduction waves at 4: E _ox = 0.86 V and E _red = 0.69 V and 5: E _ox = 0.87 V and E _red = 0.53 V.

Transition Metal Chain Complexes Supported by Soft Donor Assembling Ligands

The chemistry of discrete molecular chains constituted by metals in low oxidation states, displaying metal-metal proximity and stabilized by suitable metal-bridging, assembling ligands comprising at least one soft donor atom is comprehensively reviewed; complexes with a single (hard or soft) bridging atom (e.g., μ-halide, μ-sulfide, or μ-PR₂ etc.) as well as "closed" metal arrays (that fall in the realm of cluster chemistry) are excluded. The focus is on transition metal-based systems, with few excursions to cases combining transition and post-transition elements. Most relevant supporting ligands have neutral C, P, O, or S donor (mainly, N-heterocyclic carbene, phosphine, ether, thioether) or anionic donor (mainly phenyl, ylide, silyl, phosphide, thiolate) groups. A supporting-ligand-based classification of the metal chains is introduced, using as the classifying parameter the number of "bites" (i.e., ligand bridges) subtending each intermetallic separation. The ligands are further grouped according to the number of donor atoms interacting with the metal chain (called denticity in the following) and the column of the Periodic Table to which the set of donor atoms belongs (in ascending order). A complementary metal-based compilation of the complexes discussed is also provided in a concise tabular form.

The synthesis and magnetic properties of a linear mixed-valence [Ni3]5+ in an anthyridine tri-nickel complex

A novel trinuclear complex [Ni₃(μ₃-dbay)₄Cl₂]I₃ (1) with a mixed-valence state was prepared by reacting the tridentate ligand 1,13,14-triaza-dibenz[a,j]anthracene (dibenzanthyridine = dbay) with anhydrous NiCl₂ and sodium tetraphenylborate. The title compound provides the first example of a trinuclear nickel-anthyridine-based string complex in which the metal framework of complex 1 consists of Ni^II-Ni^I-Ni^II. X-ray crystallography, magnetic susceptibility and detailed EPR measurements were performed to characterize the structure and magnetic properties of this unique complex.

New generation of metal string complexes: strengthening metal-metal interaction via naphthyridyl group modulated oligo-alpha-pyridylamido ligands

To design new metal string complexes, several naphthyridyl group modulated oligo-alpha-pyridylamido ligands have been synthesized in the past five years. Because these ligands are less anionic than pyridylamido ligands, the resulting metal string complexes tend to form reduced mixed-valence [Ni(2)(napy)(4)](3+) dinuclear units which contain a delocalized unpaired electron and thus significantly enhance the conductance of metal string complexes. Furthermore, the asymmetric naphthyridyl group modulated oligo-alpha-pyridylamido ligands can stabilize the central heteronuclear or charge disproportionational metal frameworks, providing a plausible strategy to build inorganic molecular rectifiers.

Clear evidence of electron delocalization: synthesis, structure, magnetism, EPR and DFT calculation of the asymmetric hexanickel string complex containing a single mixed-valence (Ni(2))(3+) unit

A New Generation of Metal String Complexes: Structure, Magnetism, Spectroscopy, Theoretical Analysis, and Single Molecular Conductance of an Unusual Mixed-Valence Linear [Ni5]8+ Complex

Two new linear pentanickel complexes [Ni5(bna)4(Cl)2][PF6]2 (1) and [Ni5(bna)4(Cl)2][PF6]4 (2; bna=binaphthyridylamide), were synthesized and structurally characterized. A derivative of 1, [Ni5(bna)4(NCS)2][NCS]2 (3), was also isolated for the purpose of the conductance experiments carried out in comparison with [Ni5(tpda)4(NCS)2] (4; tpda=tripyridyldiamide). The metal framework of complex 2 is a standard [Ni5]10+ core, isoelectronic with that of [Ni5(tpda)4Cl2] (5). Also as in 5, complex 2 has an antiferromagnetic ground state (J=-15.86 cm(-1)) resulting from a coupling between the terminal nickel atoms, both in high-spin sate (S=1). Complex 1 displays the first characterized linear nickel framework in which the usual sequence of NiII atoms has been reduced by two electrons. Each dinickel unit attached to the naphthyridyl moieties is assumed to undergo a one-electron reduction, whereas the central nickel formally remains NiII. DFT calculations suggest that the metal framework of the mixed-valence complex 1 should be described as intermediate between a localized picture corresponding to NiII-NiI-NiII-NiI-NiII and a fully delocalized model represented as (Ni2)3+-NiII-(Ni2)3+. Assuming the latter model, the ground state of 1 results from an antiferromagnetic coupling (J=-34.03 cm(-1)) between the two (Ni2)3+ fragments, considered each as a single magnetic centre (S=3/2). An intervalence charge-transfer band is observed in the NIR spectrum of 1 at 1186 nm, suggesting, in accordance with DFT calculations, that 1 should be assigned to Robin-Day class II of mixed-valent complexes. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) methodology was used to assess the conductance of single molecules of 3 and 4. Compound 3 was found approximately 40% more conductive than 4, a result that could be assigned to the electron mobility induced by mixed-valency in the naphthyridyl fragments.

Four quadruple metal–metal bonds lined up: linear nonachromium(ii) metal string complexes

Through a new pyrazine-modulated penta-pyridyl-tetraamine ligand, H(4)N(9)-mpz, linear nonachromium(II) complexes with four quadruple metal-metal bonds were successfully obtained, and their structure, magnetic and electrochemistry properties were studied.

The nano-scale molecule with the longest delocalized metal–metal bonds: linear heptacobalt(ii) metal string complexes [Co7(µ7-L)4X2]

A new type of pyrazine-modulated oligo-alpha-pyridylamino ligands, N2-(pyrazin-2-yl)-N6-(6-(pyrazin-2-ylamino)pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine (H3pzpz) and N2-(pyrazin-2-yl)-N6-(6-(pyridin-2-ylamino)pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine (H3tpz), were synthesized and characterized by IR, 1H NMR and MS(FAB). Using and , the linear heptacobalt(II) metal string complexes [Co7(micro7-L)4X2] (L=pzpz3-, X=Cl-, NCS-; L=tpz3-, X=Cl-, X=NCS-) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The structures showed the shortest Co-Co distance (2.194 A) and the longest Co chain (13.5 A) obtained to date with direct Co-Co bonds. The Co-Co distances are in the range 2.194-2.309 A. Electrochemical studies showed two reversible oxidations and one reversible reduction, while all the redox reactions of H3pzpz complexes, and , occurred at higher potentials than H3tpz complexes, and . The complexes are fairly stable to oxidation. Temperature-dependent magnetic research on revealed anomalous magnetic behavior with intermediate magnetic moment values between quartet and doublet states, and deviation from the Curie-Weiss law.

New versatile ligand family, pyrazine-modulated oligo-α-pyridylamino ligands, from coordination polymer to extended metal atom chains

Here we designed and synthesized a new ligand, di(2-pyrazyl)amine (Hdpza) (1) and studied its coordination modes and the corresponding complexes with Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cr(II). Hdpza is an analogue of the well-studied di(2-pyridyl)amine (Hdpa) ligand, which was used to generate the first extended metal atom chain. Three types of coordination modes were found: anti-anti style which resulted in a mononuclear compound [Cu(Hdpza)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (2); anti-syn which was observed in a complex for the first time and resulted in a 2-D coordination polymer [Co(mu(2)-Hdpza)(2)(NCS)(2)] (3); and syn-syn type which was observed in extended metal atom chains [Ni(3)(mu(3)-dpza)(4)Cl(2)] (4), [Ni(3)(mu(3)-dpza)(4)(NCS)(2)] (5) and [Cr(3)(mu(3)-dpza)(4)Cl(2)] (6). Weak antiferromagnetic coupling via Hdpza was observed in 3, whereas magnetic studies on extended metal atom chains 4 and 5 revealed that the interaction parameter was more than -200 cm(-1). Electrochemistry showed that the extended metal atom chains 4-6 are much more stable to oxidation than the Hdpa complexes, and are able to undergo reduction.

Influence of Electron-Attractor Substituents on the Magnetic Properties of Ni(II) String Complexes

Density functional theory calculations carried out on the anionic Ni(II) chain complexes {trinickeltetrakis[2,6-bis(amido)pyridine]}2- and {trinickeltetrakis[N,N'-bis(sulfonyl)pyridyldiamido]}2- show that the electron-attractor character of the sulfonyl substituent modifies the basicity of the amido ligand ends so as to raise the electronic state of the underlying metal atom from low spin (S = 0) to high spin (S = 1). The computed elongation of the outermost Ni-N bonds with the grafting of SO2H substituents is in agreement with this interpretation.

Even-Numbered Metal Chain Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and DFT Analysis of [Ni4(μ4-Tsdpda)4(H2O)2] (Tsdpda2- = N-(p-toluenesulfonyl)dipyridyldiamido), [Ni4(μ4-Tsdpda)4]+, and Related Ni4 String Complexes

The synthesis and the X-ray structure of two complexes exhibiting a linear chain of four nickel atoms is reported, following Ni4(mu4-phdpda)4 (1), which had been characterized previously. [Ni4(mu4-Tsdpda)4(H2O)2], where H2Tsdpda is N-(p-toluenesulfonyl)dipyridyldiamine (2), is axially coordinated to two water molecules, at variance with 1. One-electron oxidation of 2 resulted in the loss of the axial ligands, yielding [Ni4(mu4-Tsdpda)4]+, [3]+, which was also structurally characterized. Finally, we report the structure of Ni4(mu4-DAniDANy)4 (4), a complex synthesized starting from the new ligand N,N'-bis-p-anisyl-2,7-diamino-1,8-naphthyridine. Magnetic measurements concluded that 4 is diamagnetic, like 1, whereas 2 is antiferromagnetic (-2J(14) = 80 cm(-)(1), using the Heisenberg Hamiltonian H = -2J(14) S(1).S(4)), as are other axially coordinated chains with an odd number of nickel atoms. DFT calculations are reported on these complexes in order to rationalize their electronic structure and their magnetic behavior. The magnetic properties of the [Ni4]8+ complexes are governed by the electronic state of the Ni(II) atoms, which may be either low-spin (S = 0), or high-spin (S = 1). DFT calculations show that the promotion to high spin of two Ni atoms in the chain, either external or internal, depends on the interplay between axial and equatorial coordination. The synergy between axial coordination and the presence of electron-withdrawing toluenesulfonyl substituents in 2 favors the promotion to the high-spin state of the terminal Ni atoms, thus yielding an antiferromagnetic ground state for the complex. This is at variance with complexes 1 and 4, for which the lowest quintet state results from the promotion to high spin of the internal nickel atoms, together with an important ligand participation, and is destabilized by 9 to 16 kcal mol(-1) with respect to the diamagnetic ground state.

A trimetal chain cocooned by two heptadentate polypyridylamide ligands

Compounds of nickel in which a chain of three metal atoms is closely embraced by two interlocking heptadentate dianions derived from a chain of five pyridyl groups linked at the 2, or 2 and 6, positions by four amide nitrogen atoms are reported. This new type of extended metal atom chain (EMAC) compound differs from earlier ones in that ligand exchange at the axial positions cannot occur, because the axial ligands are part of the entire ligand. Four such compounds, all crystallographically characterized, are reported. This work is a proof-of-concept project that will be extended to other metals with these and other homologous ligands.
