Abstract
A discrete metallo-supramolecular assembly composed of six iron(ii) cations and twelve redox-active terpyridine fragments has been developed for the highly efficient visible-light-driven reduction of CO2 to CO with a TON of 14 956 and 99.6% selectivity in the presence of an organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) photosensitizer 4CzIPN in aqueous solution. The photochemical system proceeds rapidly with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 276 min-1. It is demonstrated that the redox-active terpyridine fragments in the assembly are reduced by the photosensitizer which could further act as an electron reservoir for CO2 reduction, resulting in the highly efficient reduction of CO2. This work shows that discrete metallo-supramolecular assemblies could be used for robust photochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract
Dual-redox metallo-supramolecular polymers with a zigzag structure (polyFe-N and polyRu-N) were successfully synthesized by 1:1 complexation of a redox-active Fe(II) or Ru(II) ion and 4,4-bis(2,2:6,2-terpyridinyl)phenyl-triphenylamine (LTPA) as a redox-active ligand. The polymers had high solubility in methanol, and the polymer solutions showed dark brown (polyFe-N) or orange-red (polyRu-N) coloration. UV-vis spectra of the polymers displayed a strong metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption in the visible region. Cyclic voltammograms of the polymer films exhibited two pairs of reversible redox waves. The first redox at ∼0.5 V versus Ag/Ag+ was assigned to the redox in the triphenylamine (TPA) moiety of LTPA, and the second redox at 0.8 V versus Ag/Ag+ (polyFe-N) or 0.9 V versus Ag/Ag+ (polyRu-N) was given to the redox of Fe(II)/(III) or Ru(II)/(III), respectively. Upon applying a positive potential of more than 0.5 V versus Ag/Ag+ to the polymer films, a new absorption at ∼820 nm in the near-infrared (NIR) region appeared with wide tailing to the longer wavelength. It is considered that the new absorption in the NIR region is caused by the polaron band of the oxidized ligand in the polymers. When the applied potential was increased to 1.0 V versus Ag/Ag+ (polyFe-N) or 1.1 V versus Ag/Ag+ (polyRu-N), the maximum wavelength of the new absorption in the NIR region shifted to 885-900 nm and the absorbance was further enhanced with disappearance of the MLCT absorption. Eventually, the original colors of the polymers were faint to light green. This visible-to-NIR electrochromism was reversible, and maximum optical contrast (ΔT) reached 52% in the visible region and 80% in the NIR region. A prototype solid-state device with the polymer was fabricated for practical utilization, exhibiting excellent cycle stability of >4000 cycles with maintaining high optical contrast from the visible-to-NIR range.

Abstract
Snowflake, a highly symmetrical hexagram figure, is challenging to be expressed by chemistry/supramolecular chemistry due to the complex structure. Herein, we have constructed super snowflake supramolecules using terpyridine (tpy)-based metal-organic building blocks with <tpy-Ru(II)-tpy> and <tpy-Zn(II)-tpy> connectivities through stepwise strategies in high yield. The structures were characterized by multi-dimensional mass spectrometry and multi-dimensional NMR spectrometry. In order to address the stability/tolerance of our designed super snowflake structures, ligand exchange behaviors between different supramolecules with various arm length were fully investigated by mass spectrometry. The study revealed that three modes could exist in such binary systems, including full exchange, partial exchange and self-sorting (no exchange) depending on the length difference of ligands.

Abstract
In the seeking of molecular expression of fractal geometry, chemists have endeavored in the construction of molecules and supramolecules during the past few years, while only a few examples were reported, especially for the discrete architectures. We herein designed and constructed five generations of supramolecular fractals (G1-G5) based on the coordination-driven self-assembly of terpyridine ligands. All the ligands were synthesized from triphenylamine motif, which played a central role in geometry control. Different approaches based on direct Sonogashira coupling and/or ⟨tpy-Ru(II)-tpy⟩ connectivity were employed to prepare complex Ru(II)-organic building blocks. Fractals G1-G5 were obtained in high yields by precise coordination of organic or Ru(II)-organic building blocks with Zn(II) ions. Characterization of those architectures were accomplished by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), traveling-wave ion mobility mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the two largest fractals also hierarchically self-assemble into ordered supramolecular nanostructures either at solid/liquid interface or in solution on the basis of their well-defined scaffolds.

Abstract
Complexes [Co(L)2](ClO4)2 (L = o-substituted 2-(pyridine-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthrolines 1a-c) containing three redox active centres (a Co2+ ion and two triaryl amine (Tara) units) have been synthesised. The order of oxidation steps in [Co(L)2](ClO4)2 (L = 1a-c) was determined using cyclic voltammetry and EPR/UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry. In acetonitrile solutions, at room temperature, the first oxidation is Co-centred followed by the Tara oxidation at more anodic potentials. The order of oxidation is inverted in solutions of the less polar solvent dichloromethane. The Co3+/2+-centred redox event leads to a spin transition between the paramagnetic high-spin (HS) Co2+ and the diamagnetic low-spin (LS) Co3+ state, which was proven using 1H NMR and EPR spectroscopy. After one-electron oxidation of [Co(L)2](ClO4)2, an equilibrium between the diamagnetic [Co3+(L)]3+ and paramagnetic [Co2+(L)(L+)]3+ state in [Co(L)2]3+ (L = 1a-c) was found. Cyclic voltammetry showed enhanced intermolecular electron transfer between the [Co2+(L)2]2+ and [Co3+(L)2]3+ redox states mediated by [Co2+(L)(L+)]3+. Variable temperature vis-NIR spectroscopy of in situ generated [Co(L)2]3+ revealed a temperature-dependent redox equilibrium between the [Co3+(L)2]3+ and the [Co2+(L+)(L)]3+ states (L = 1a-c). Magnetic coupling between the HS-Co2+ ion and the Tara+ radical in [HS-Co2+(L+)(L)]3+ (L = 1a,c) was deduced from broad and undetectable lines observed in the corresponding EPR spectra. Complete oxidation to [LS-Co3+(L+)2]5+ (L = 1a,c) leads to characteristic EPR spectra of Tara biradicals with non-interacting spins.

Abstract
Spontaneous formation of the heteroleptic cadmium(II) bis(terpyridine) complex under ambient conditions can be achieved by a combination of 6,6''-di(2,6-dimethoxylphenyl)-substituted and unsubstituted terpyridine-based ligands. Building on this dynamic heteroleptic complexation, diverse metallo-supramolecular macrocycles and cages were readily assembled in quantitative yields from the predesigned multicomponent systems. The complementary ligation reinforced self-recognition to facilitate the shape-dependent self-sorting of a four-component dynamic library into two well-defined parallelograms. In addition, the subtle lability difference between homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes led to the site-selective CdII -ZnII transmetalation in the Sierpiński triangle. Facile construction of a dodecanuclear tetrahedral metallocage was also realized by using two self-recognizable tritopic building blocks. The photophysical study of the metallo-supramolecules assembled from the d10 metal ions revealed intense ligand-based photoluminescence in solution. The self-assembly strategy described here provides an efficient methodology for building pre-programmable, sophisticated supramolecular architectures furnished with photoactivity.

Abstract
We have synthesized a series of triarylamine-cored molecules equipped with an adjacent amide moiety and dendritic peripheral tails in a variety of modes. We show by (1) H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy that their supramolecular self-assembly can be promoted in solution upon light stimulation and radical initiation. In addition, we have probed their molecular arrangements and mesomorphic properties in the bulk by integrated studies on their film state by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), variable-temperature polarizing optical microscopy (VT-POM), variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (VT-XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Differences in the number and the disposition of the peripheral tails significantly affect their mesomorphic properties associated with their lamellar- or columnar-packed nanostructures, which are based on segregated stacks of the triphenylamine cores and the lipophilic/lipophobic periphery. Such structural tuning is of interest for implementation of these soft self-assemblies as electroactive materials from solution to mesophases.

Abstract
This tutorial review consists of five main sections. The first gives a general introduction and then a discussion about the need for luminescent assemblies. The next four sections present the various assemblies based on the metal ions used to assemble the final structures. Each of these sections gives a brief overview of the design principles, synthesis, and ground and excited-state properties of the ligands and complexes in question. The review concludes with some suggestions for future avenues of research.
