Reactivity of a palladium fluoro complex towards silanes and Bu3SnCHCH2: catalytic derivatisation of pentafluoropyridine based on carbon–fluorine bond activation reactions

Mononuclear Four-Coordinate Bis-Fluoride Bis-NHC Complexes of Chromium(II), Iron(II), and Cobalt(II)

The reaction between silylamido complexes of Cr(II), Fe(II), and Co(II) and IMes·2HF salt in the presence of IMes (IMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene) led to isolation of Cr(IMes)2F2 (2-Cr), Fe(IMes)2F2 (2-Fe), and Co(IMes)2F2 (2-Co). X-ray structural studies revealed that 2-Cr adopts square planar geometry, while 2-Fe and 2-Co have distorted tetrahedral geometry. Magnetic susceptibility studies of 2-Cr, 2-Fe, and 2-Co were consistent with high-spin complexes, S = 2 for 2-Cr/2-Fe and S = 3/2 for 2-Co. We demonstrated that fluoride can be successfully exchanged for cyanide and azide using trimethylsilyl cyanide and trimethylsilyl azide (3-Fe and 4-Fe). DFT studies suggest that the preference of 2-Cr to adopt square planar geometry over tetrahedral is due to its d4 metal center, where four electrons fill the lower-lying d-orbitals.

Palladium-Catalyzed Stereoselective C-F Bond Vinylation and Allylation of Tetrasubstituted gem-Difluoroalkenes via Stille Coupling: Synthesis of Monofluorinated 1,3- and 1,4-Dienes

We herein describe a Pd-catalyzed stereoselective C-F bond vinylation and allylation reaction of tetrasubstituted gem-difluoroalkenes for the synthesis of valuable monofluorinated 1,3- and 1,4-dienes with excellent diastereoselectivities. Different from previously used Pd(PPh₃)₄, a catalytic system involving Pd(0) and dppe as the ligand was developed for Stille-type cross-coupling between gem-difluoroalkenes and vinyl- and allyltin reagents.

Catalytic Hydrodefluorination via Oxidative Addition, Ligand Metathesis, and Reductive Elimination at Bi(I)/Bi(III) Centers

Herein, we report a hydrodefluorination reaction of polyfluoroarenes catalyzed by bismuthinidenes, Phebox-Bi(I) and OMe-Phebox-Bi(I). Mechanistic studies on the elementary steps support a Bi(I)/Bi(III) redox cycle that comprises C(sp²)-F oxidative addition, F/H ligand metathesis, and C(sp²)-H reductive elimination. Isolation and characterization of a cationic Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) triflate manifests the feasible oxidative addition of Phebox-Bi(I) into the C(sp²)-F bond. Spectroscopic evidence was provided for the formation of a transient Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) hydride during catalysis, which decomposes at low temperature to afford the corresponding C(sp²)-H bond while regenerating the propagating Phebox-Bi(I). This protocol represents a distinct catalytic example where a main-group center performs three elementary organometallic steps in a low-valent redox manifold.

C-F Activation for C(sp2)-C(sp3) Cross-Coupling by a Secondary Phosphine Oxide (SPO)-Nickel Complex

A secondary phosphine oxide (SPO)-nickel catalyst allowed the activation of otherwise inert C-F bonds of unactivated arenes in terms of challenging couplings with primary and secondary alkyl Grignard reagents. The C-F activation is characterized by mild reaction conditions and high levels of branched selectivity. Electron-rich and electron-deficient arenes were suitable electrophiles for this transformation. In addition, this strategy also proved suitable to heterocycles and for the activation of C-O bonds under slightly modified conditions.

Palladium-Catalyzed Stereoselective Hydrodefluorination of Tetrasubstituted gem-Difluoroalkenes

A highly stereoselective palladium(0)-catalyzed hydrodefluorination (HDF) of tetrasubstituted gem-difluoroalkenes is developed. By using catalytic Pd(PPh₃)₄ (2.5-5 mol %) and hydrosilane Me₂PhSiH, various trisubstituted terminal (E)-monofluoroalkenes can be synthesized with excellent E/Z selectivity (>99:1) and good functional group tolerability. The key stereocontrol should be exerted by an ester-directed C-F bond oxidative addition step in the catalytic cycle.

C-H and C-F bond activation reactions of pentafluorostyrene at rhodium complexes

The rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(Bpin)(PEt₃)₃] (1), [Rh(H)(PEt₃)₃] (5) and [Rh(Me)(PEt₃)₃] (14) were employed in reactions with pentafluorostyrene affording coordination of the olefin and C-F or C-H bond activation. Control of the reaction conditions allowed for selective activation reactions at different positions at the fluorinated aromatic ring. The rhodacycle trans-[Rh(F)(CH₂CH₂(2-C₆F₄))(PEt₃)₂] (7) was identified as an intermediate for an activation at the 2-position. Reactivity studies of the latter with CO led to the generation of trans-[Rh(F)(CH₂CH₂C₆F₄)(CO)(PEt₃)₂] (10). Stoichiometric and catalytic hydroboration reactions were achieved using complexes 1 or 5 as catalysts.

C-F activation of perfluorophenazine at nickel: selectivity and mechanistic investigations

The reactivity of [Ni(cod)2] towards perfluorophenazine in the presence of phosphines is reported. When PiPr3 and PCy3 are used, an initial κ-(N) coordination of the nickel centre to the nitrogen atom of the perfluorophenazine ring occurs, forming the dark blue complexes [Ni{κ-(N)-C12N2F8}(PiPr3)2] (1) and [Ni{κ-(N)-C12N2F8}(PCy3)2] (2). Complex 1 was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes rearranged by regioselective C-F activation of the perfluorophenazine ring in the 2-position to yield complexes trans-[NiF(2-C12N2F7)(PiPr3)2] (5) and trans-[NiF(2-C12N2F7)(PCy3)2] (6). The structure of 6 was also determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Kinetic measurements for the decrease of 1 at different temperatures reveal a first order reaction with ΔH‡ = 19 ± 7 kcal mol-1. Initially, small amounts of an intermediate, assigned as [Ni(η2-1,2-C12N2F8)(PiPr3)2] (3), were observed, which exhibits a 1,2-η2 coordination of the perfluorophenazine. DFT calculations on the same transformation were also computed, which suggest that both a phosphine-assisted mechanism and an oxidative addition can be operating reaction pathways. The 1,2-η2 complex [Ni(η2-1,2-C12N2F8)(PEt3)2] (4) was obtained when PEt3 was used as ligand, and an unstable dark red complex trans-[NiF(2-C12N2F7)(PEt3)2] (7) formed rapidly by C-F activation. The reactivity of the perfluorophenazine was compared with those of perfluorodibenzo-p-dioxin. In this case, no prior coordination was observed and the C-F activation took place in a less selective manner forming trans-[NiF(1-C12O2F7)(PiPr3)2] (8) and trans-[NiF(2-C12O2F7)(PiPr3)2] (9), outlining the role of the nitrogen for the selectivity of the process. Treatment of two equivalents of [Ni(cod)2] and four equivalents of PiPr3 with perfluorophenazine afforded a double C-F activation to give [{trans-(PiPr3)2NiF}2(2,7-C12N2F6)] (10).

An umpolung strategy for the cross-coupling of polyfluoroarenes with various substituted hydrazones to construct C(sp²)–C(sp³) bonds is developed.

Nickel-Catalyzed Csp2-Csp3 Bond Formation via C-F Bond Activation

A nickel-catalyzed cross coupling of aryl fluorides via C-F bond activation has been developed. The alkylation method allows selective replacement of aryl fluorides by alkyl groups and enables the synthesis of diverse and otherwise difficult to access scaffolds in good yields.

Tuning the Lewis acidity of difluorido gold(iii) complexes: the synthesis of [AuClF2(SIMes)] and [AuF2(OTeF5)(SIMes)]

A route to [Au^IIIClF₂(SIMes)] and [Au^IIIF₂(OTeF₅)(SIMes)] including structural characterization to tune the ligand arrangement and Lewis acidity of gold(iii) centres was developed.

Transition-Metal-Free Catalytic Hydrodefluorination of Polyfluoroarenes by Concerted Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution with a Hydrosilicate

A transition-metal-free catalytic hydrodefluorination (HDF) reaction of polyfluoroarenes is described. The reaction involves direct hydride transfer from a hydrosilicate as the key intermediate, which is generated from a hydrosilane and a fluoride salt. The eliminated fluoride regenerates the hydrosilicate to complete the catalytic cycle. Dispersion-corrected DFT calculations indicated that the HDF reaction proceeds through a concerted nucleophilic aromatic substitution (CS_N Ar) process.

Constructing a Catalytic Cycle for C-F to C-X (X = O, S, N) Bond Transformation Based on Gold-Mediated Ligand Nucleophilic Attack

A tricoordinated gold(I) chloride complex, tBuXantphosAuCl, supported by a sterically bulky 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)xanthene ligand (tBuXantphos) was synthesized. This complex features a remarkably longer Au-Cl bond length [2.632(1) Å] than bicoordinated linear gold complexes (2.27-2.30 Å) and tricoordinated XantphosAuCl [2.462(1) Å]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a cocrystal of tBuXantphosAuCl and pentafluoronitrobenzene (PFNB) and UV-vis spectroscopic titration experiments revealed the existence of an anion-π interaction between the Cl anion ligand and PFNB. Stoichiometric reaction between PFNB and tBuXantphosAuOtBu, after replacement of Cl by a more nucleophilic tBuO anion ligand, showed higher reactivity and para selectivity in the transformation of C-F to C-OtBu bond, distinctively different from that when only KOtBu was used (ortho selectivity) under the identical condition. Mechanistic studies including density functional theory calculations suggested a gold-mediated nucleophilic ligand attack of the C-F bond pathway via an SNAr process. On the basis of these results, using trimethylsilyl derivatives TMS-X (X = OMe, SEt, NEt2) as the nucleophilic ligand source and the fluorine acceptor, catalytic transformation of the C-F bond of aromatic substrates to the C-X (X = O, S, N) bond was achieved with tBuXantphosAuCl as the catalyst (up to 20 turnover numbers).

Synthesis of a rhodium(i) germyl complex: a useful tool for C–H and C–F bond activation reactions

The rhodium(i) germyl complex [Rh(GePh₃)(PEt₃)₃] is a useful tool for C–F and C–H bond activation reactions. For instance, treatment with hexafluoropropene results in the formation of two isomeric C–F activation products [Rh{(E)-CFCF(CF₃)}(PEt₃)₃] and [Rh{(Z)-CFCF(CF₃)}(PEt₃)₃] in a 3 : 1 ratio.

Catalytic defluorinative [3 + 2] cycloaddition of trifluoromethylalkenes with alkynes via reduction of nickel(ii) fluoride species

A catalytic synthesis of 2-fluoro-1,3-cyclopentadienes was achieved via [3 + 2] cycloaddition of 2-trifluoromethyl-1-alkenes and alkynes using a nickel catalyst and a diboron-based ternary additive system.
