Abstract
This review describes the main successful strategies that are used to grow mesostructured nanocrystalline metal oxide and SiO₂ films via deposition of sol-gel derived solutions. In addition to the typical physicochemical forces to be considered during crystallization, mesoporous thin films are also affected by the substrate-film relationship and the mesostructure. The substrate can influence the crystallization temperature and the obtained crystallographic orientation due to the interfacial energies and the lattice mismatch. The mesostructure can influence the crystallite orientation, and affects nucleation and growth behavior due to the wall thickness and pore curvature. Three main methods are presented and discussed: templated mesoporosity followed by thermally induced crystallization, mesostructuration of already crystallized metal oxide nanobuilding units and substrate-directed crystallization with an emphasis on very recent results concerning epitaxially grown piezoelectric structured α-quartz films via crystallization of amorphous structured SiO₂ thin films.

Abstract
Ordered mesostructured TiO2 thin films were constructed through a method that combined sol-gel with evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). It was found that the calcination temperature, as well as the type of block copolymer, could vary the TiO2 mesoporous structure. Based on tension stress calculated by the surface energy of crystallites and the compression calculated by interface energy between the crystallites, the thermodynamic study for the sample had been carried out and the critical crystallite size expression of the mesoporous film was presented for the prediction of the thermal stability of the mesoporous structure at high temperature. It was also found that varying the mass ratio of templating agent to inorganic precursor could adjust the pore size of mesoporous TiO2. The pore size regulating mechanism had been discussed. The sample calcined at 450-500 °C, which had a higher specific surface area and larger pore size, exhibited higher photocatalyzed destruction capability of Methylene Blue.

Abstract
Periodically ordered mesoporous titania thin films (MTTF) present a high surface area, controlled porosity in the 2-20 nm pore diameter range and an amorphous or crystalline inorganic framework. These materials are nowadays routinely prepared by combining soft chemistry and supramolecular templating. Photocatalytic transparent coatings and titania-based solar cells are the immediate promising applications. However, a wealth of new prospective uses have emerged on the horizon, such as advanced catalysts, perm-selective membranes, optical materials based on plasmonics and photonics, metamaterials, biomaterials or new magnetic nanocomposites. Current and novel applications rely on the ultimate control of the materials features such as pore size and geometry, surface functionality and wall structure. Even if a certain control of these characteristics has been provided by the methods reported so far, the needs for the next generation of MTTF require a deeper insight in the physical and chemical processes taking place in their preparation and processing. This article presents a critical discussion of these aspects. This discussion is essential to evolve from know-how to sound knowledge, aiming at a rational materials design of these fascinating systems.

Abstract
New hybrid optical sensors have been prepared by grafting specifically designed fluorescent, functionalised, phosphorus-containing dendrimers onto a nanocrystalline mesoporous titania thin film formed by evaporation-induced self-assembly. The structural characterisation and optical behaviour of these new fluorescent probes have been studied both in solution and after being grafted onto an inorganic network, which resulted in the discovery of improved probing selectivity in the solid state. This new hybrid sensor exhibits high sensitivity to phenolic OH moieties (especially those from resorcinol and 2-nitroresorcinol), which induce the quenching of fluorescence more efficiently in the solid state than in solution. This effect is a result of the increased spatial proximity of the fluorescent molecules, which is induced by pore confinement that makes the formation of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl moieties of the quenchers and the carbonyl groups of the dendrimer easier.

Abstract
The electrokinetic features of electron-conducting substrates, as measured in a conventional thin-layer electrokinetic cell, strongly depend on the extent of bipolar faradaic depolarisation of the interface formed with the adjacent electrolytic solution. Streaming potential versus applied pressure data obtained for metallic substrates must generally be interpreted on the basis of a modified Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation corrected by an electronic conduction term-non linear with respect to the lateral potential and applied pressure gradient-that stems from the bipolar electrodic behavior of the metallic surface. In the current study, streaming potential measurements have been performed in KNO(3) solutions on porous plugs made of electron-conducting grains of pyrite (FeS(2)) covered by humic acids. For zero coverage, the extensive bipolar electronic conduction taking place in the plug-depolarized by concomitant and spatially distributed oxidation and reduction reactions of Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) species-leads to the complete extinction of the streaming potential over the entire range of applied pressure examined. For low to intermediate coverage, the local electron-transfer kinetics on the covered regions of the plug becomes more sluggish. The overall bipolar electronic conduction is then diminished which leads to an increase in the streaming potential with a non-linear dependence on the pressure. For significant coverage, a linear response is observed which basically reflects the interfacial double layer properties of the humics surface layer. A tractable, semi-analytical model is presented that reproduces the electrokinetic peculiarities of the complex and composite system FeS(2)/humics investigated. The study demonstrates that the streaming potential technique is a fast and valuable tool for establishing how well the electron transfer kinetics at a partially or completely depolarised bare electron-conducting substrate/electrolyte solution interface is either promoted (catalysis) or blocked (passivation) by the presence of a discontinuous surface layer.
