Abstract
The reversible photo-induced conformation transition of a single molecule with a [5]helicene backbone has garnered considerable interest in recent studies. Based on such a switching process, one can build molecular photo-driven switches for potential applications of nanoelectronics. But the achievement of high-performance reversible single-molecule photoswitches is still rare. Here, we theoretically propose a 13,14-dimethylcethrene switch whose photoisomerization between the ring-closed and ring-open forms can be triggered by ultraviolet (UV) and visible light irradiation. The electronic structure transitions and charge transport characteristics, concurrent with the photo-driven electrocyclization of the molecule, are calculated by the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) in combination with density functional theory (DFT). The electrical conductivity bears great diversity between the closed and open configurations, certifying the switching behavior and leading to a maximum on-off ratio of up to 103, which is considerable in organic junctions. Further analysis confirms the evident switching behaviors affected by the molecule-electrode interfaces in molecular junctions. Our findings are helpful for the rational design of organic photoswitches at the single-molecule level based on cethrene and analogous organic molecules.

Abstract
The construction of multifunctional, single-molecule nanocircuits to achieve the miniaturization of active electronic devices is a challenging goal in molecular electronics. In this paper, we present an effective strategy for enhancing the multifunctionality and switching performance of diarylethene-based molecular devices, which exhibit photoswitchable rectification properties. Through a molecular engineering design, we systematically investigate a series of electron donor/acceptor-substituted diarylethene molecules to modulate the electronic properties and investigate the transport behaviors of the molecular junctions using the non-equilibrium Green's function combined with the density functional theory. Our results demonstrate that the asymmetric configuration, substituted by both the donor and acceptor on the diarylethene molecule, exhibits the highest switching ratio and rectification ratio. Importantly, this rectification function can be switched on/off through the photoisomerization of the diarylethene unit. These modulations in the transport properties of these molecular junctions with different substituents were obtained with molecule-projected self-consistent Hamiltonian and bias-dependent transmission spectra. Furthermore, the current-voltage characteristics of these molecular junctions can be explained by the molecular energy level structure, showing the significance of energy level regulation. These findings have practical implications for constructing high-performance, multifunctional molecular-integrated circuits.

Abstract
The first-, second-, and third-order molecular nonlinear optical properties, including two-photon absorption of a series of derivatives, involving two dithienylethene (DTE) groups connected by several molecular linkers (bis(ethylene-1,2-dithiolato)Ni- (NiBDT), naphthalene, quasilinear oligothiophene chains), are investigated by employing density functional theory (DFT). These properties can be efficiently controlled by DTE switches, in connection with light of appropriate frequency. NiBDT, as a linker, is associated with a greater contrast, in comparison to naphthalene, between the first and second hyperpolarizabilities of the "open-open" and the "closed-closed" isomers. This is explained by invoking the low-lying excited states of NiBDT. It is shown that the second hyperpolarizability can be used as an index, which follows the structural changes induced by photochromism. Assuming a Förster type transfer mechanism, the intramolecular excited-state energy transfer (EET) mechanism is studied. Two important parameters related to this are computed: the electronic coupling (VDA) between the donor and acceptor fragments as well as the overlap between the absorption and emission spectra of the donor and acceptor groups. NiBDT as a linker is associated with a low electronic coupling, VDA, value. We found that VDA is affected by molecular geometry. Our results predict that the linker strongly influences the communication between the open-closed DTE groups. The sensitivity of the molecular nonlinear optical properties could assist with identification of molecular isomers.

Abstract
Hybrid molecules based on fullerene C60 and dithienylethene and its perfluorinated analog not inferior in the efficiency of phototransformations to the initial photochromic compounds were synthesized for the first time. The resulting pyrrolidinofullerenes containing photochromic moieties were used to fabricate organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with output and transfer characteristics ten times exceeding similar characteristics of devices based on staring dithienylethenes. It was found that OFETs based on hybrid molecules with dithienylethenes are four times less efficient than devices based on hybrid molecules with perfluorinated analogs.

Abstract
Diarylethenes (DAEs) are an established class of photochromic molecules, but their effective incorporation into pre-existing targets is synthetically difficult. Here we describe a new class of DAEs in which one of the aryl rings is a 1,2,3-triazole that is formed by “click” chemistry between an azide on the target and a matching alkyne–cyclopentene–thiophene component. This late-stage zero-length linking allows for tight integration of the DAE with the target, thereby increasing the chances for photomodulation of target functions. Nineteen different DAEs were synthesized and their properties investigated. All showed photochromism. Electron-withdrawing groups, and in particular −M-substituents at the triazole and/or thiophene moiety resulted in DAEs with high photo- and thermostability. Further, the chemical nature of the cyclopentene bridge had a strong influence on the behaviour upon UV light irradiation. Incorporation of perfluorinated cyclopentene led to compounds with high photo- and thermostability, but the reversible photochromic reaction was restricted to halogenated solvents. Compounds containing the perhydrogenated cyclopentene bridge, on the other hand, allowed the reversible photochromic reaction in a wide range of solvents, but had on average lower photo- and thermostabilities. The combination of the perhydrocyclopentene bridge and electron-withdrawing groups resulted in a DAE with improved photostability and no solvent restriction. Quantum chemical calculations helped to identify the photoproducts formed in halogenated as well as non-halogenated solvents. For two optimized DAE photoswitches, photostationary state composition and reaction quantum yields were determined. These data revealed efficient photochemical ring closure and opening. We envision applications of these new photochromic diarylethenes in photonics, nanotechnology, photobiology, photopharmacology and materials science. New photochromic diarylethenes are reported in which one aryl ring is a 1,2,3-triazole that is formed by “click” chemistry between an azide on the target and a matching alkyne–cyclopentene–thiophene component.![]()

Abstract
Limited levels of UV exposure can be beneficial to the human body. However, the UV radiation present in the atmosphere can be damaging if levels of exposure exceed safe limits which depend on the individual the skin color. Hence, UV photochromic materials that respond to UV light by changing their color are powerful tools to sense radiation safety limits. Photochromic materials comprise either organic materials, inorganic transition metal oxides, or a hybrid combination of both. The photochromic behavior largely relies on charge transfer mechanisms and electronic band structures. These factors can be influenced by the structure and morphology, fabrication, composition, hybridization, and preparation of the photochromic materials, among others. Significant challenges are involved in realizing rapid photochromic change, which is repeatable, reversible with low fatigue, and behaving according to the desired application requirements. These challenges also relate to finding the right synergy between the photochromic materials used, the environment it is being used for, and the objectives that need to be achieved. In this review, the principles and applications of photochromic processes for transition metal oxides and hybrid materials, photocatalytic applications, and the outlook in the context of commercialized sensors in this field are presented.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive materials, frequently designated as "smart/intelligent materials", can modify their structure or properties by either a biological, physical, or chemical stimulus which, if properly controlled, could be used for specific applications. Such materials have been studied and exploited in several fields, like electronics, photonics, controlled drugs administration, imaging and medical diagnosis, among others, as well as in Analytical Chemistry where they have been used as chromatographic stationary phases, as part of sensors and for extraction purposes. This review article pretends to provide an overview of the most recent applications of these materials (mostly polymeric materials) in sample preparation for extraction purposes, as well as to provide a general vision of the current state-of-the-art of this field, their potential use and future applications.

Abstract
Dynamic materials comprising spiropyrans have emerged as one of the most interesting and promising class of stimulus-responsive materials. Spiropyrans are often embedded in polymer matrices; their covalent attachment into porous monolithic silsesquioxane frameworks, however, is virtually unexplored. We demonstrate that a silylated spiropyran derivative can be covalently incorporated into ultralight silsesquioxane-based bulk materials by a two-step co-condensation sol-gel approach without restricting its conformational freedom and thus its stimulus-responsive properties. UV-vis measurements prove the conversion of the colorless closed-ring form of the spiropyran molecule into its highly colored purple isomer or the yellow colored protonated structure thereof. The transformation can be triggered simply by irradiation of the spiropyran-containing silsesquioxane monolith with UV or visible light or by the pH value of the chemical environment. A strong dependence of the surface polarity and water wettability on the prevalent isomer was observed. The contact angle of a water droplet on the monolithic surface can be altered from 146 to 100° by irradiation of the monolith with UV light for 3 min. Additionally, the prepared materials possess high specific surface areas, low bulk densities, and porosities of up to 84%.

Abstract
The supramolecular polymerization of an acid‐sensitive pyridyl‐based ligand (L1) bearing a photoresponsive azobenzene moiety was elucidated by mechanistic studies. Addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) led to the transformation of the antiparallel H‐bonded fibers of L1 in methylcyclohexane into superhelical braid‐like fibers stabilized by H‐bonding of parallel‐stacked monomer units. Interestingly, L1 dimers held together by unconventional pyridine–TFA N⋅⋅⋅H⋅⋅⋅O bridges represent the main structural elements of the assembly. UV‐light irradiation caused a strain‐driven disassembly and subsequent aggregate reconstruction, which ultimately led to short fibers. The results allowed to understand the mechanism of mutual influence of acid and light stimuli on supramolecular polymerization processes, thus opening up new possibilities to design advanced stimuli‐triggered supramolecular systems.

Abstract
Diarylethenes are molecular switches, the state of which can efficiently be controlled by illumination with ultraviolet or visible light. To use the change in the molecular properties when switching between the two states for a specific function, direct contact with solid surfaces is advantageous as it provides immobilization. Here we present a study of a diarylethene derivate (T-DAE, 1,2-bis(5-methyl-2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)cyclopent-1-ene) in direct contact with highly ordered graphite as well as with semimetallic Bi(1 1 1) surfaces by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and simulated spectra based on density functional theory. On both surfaces, the molecule can be switched from its open to its closed form by 325-475 nm broadband or ultraviolet illumination. On the other hand, back isomerization to the ring-open T-DAE was not possible.

Abstract
Diarylethene molecules are prototype molecular switches with their two isomeric forms exhibiting strikingly different conductance, while maintaining similar length. We employed low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to resolve the energy and the spatial extend of the molecular orbitals of the open and closed isomers when lying on a Au(111) surface. We find an intriguing difference in the extension of the respective HOMOs and a peculiar energy splitting of the formerly degenerate LUMO of the open isomer. We then lift the two isomers with the tip of the STM and measure the current through the individual molecules. By a simple analytical model of the transport, we show that the previously determined orbital characteristics are essential ingredients for the complete understanding of the transport properties. We also succeeded in switching the suspended molecules by the current, while switching the ones which are in direct contact to the surface occurs nonlocally with the help of the electric field of the tip.

Abstract
Smart materials are responsive to multiple stimuli like light, temperature, pH and redox reactions with specific changes in state. Various functionalities in miniaturised devices can be achieved through the application of "smart materials" that respond to changes in their surroundings. The change in state of the materials in the presence of a stimulus may be used for on demand alteration of flow patterns in devices, acting as microvalves, as scaffolds for cellular aggregation or as modalities for signal amplification. In this review, we discuss the concepts of smart trigger responsive materials and their applications in miniaturized devices both for organ-on-a-chip disease models and for point-of-care diagnostics. The emphasis is on leveraging the smartness of these materials for example, to allow on demand sample actuation, ion dependent spheroid models for cancer or light dependent contractility of muscle films for organ-on-a-chip applications. The review throws light on the current status, scope for technological enhancements, challenges for translation and future prospects of increased incorporation of smart materials as integral parts of miniaturized devices.

Abstract
Recently, the fabrication of nonvolatile memory devices based on gold nanoparticles has been intensively investigated. In this work, we report on the design and synthesis of new semiconducting quaterthiophene incorporating hexyl thiol group (4TT). Gold nanoparticles capped with4TT(4TTG) were prepared in a two-phase liquid-liquid system. These nanoparticles have diameters in the range 2–6 nm and are well dispersed in the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) host matrix. The intermolecular interaction between4TTand P3HT could enhance the charge-transport between gold nanoparticles and P3HT. Transfer curve of transistor memory device made of4TTG/P3HT hybrid film exhibited significant current hysteresis, probably arising from the energy level barrier at4TTG/P3HT interface. Additionally, the polymer memory resistor structure with an active layer consisting of4TTGand P3HT displayed a remarkable electrical bistable behavior.

Abstract
Type I dyotropic rearrangement reactions of halogen and methyl substituents at the bridgehead position of diarylethenes and dihydroarylethenes have been studied through density functional theory at B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level. The calculations have been performed to explore the dyotropic rearrangement as a possible factor for the elusive nature of halogenated dithienylethenes (closed). The dyotropic rearrangement process in closed dithienylethenes is then compared with the dihydro analogues. Moreover, the effect of hetero atom and conjugation is also explored through quantum mechanical calculations.

Abstract
Building dimers of organic photochromic compounds paves the way to multifunctional switches, but such architectures often undergo partial photoreactivity only. Combining photochromism of molecules and plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles (NPs) is known to affect the photochromism of monomers, yet the impact on multimers remains unknown. Here we propose a theoretical study of dimers of dithienylethenes by the mean of a hybrid calculation scheme (discrete-interaction model/quantum mechanics). We aim to assess how the optical properties of multiphotochromes are tuned by the influence of the plasmon resonances. We show that, for a typical chemisorption orientation on the NP, the absorption bands responsible for the photochromism are significantly enhanced for both the doubly open and mixed closed-open isomers of the dyad, hinting that plasmon resonance could be used to boost the generally poor photoactivity of dithienylethene dyads.

Abstract
In this perspective, we present an overview of the determination of excited-state properties of "real-life" dyes, and notably of their optical absorption and emission spectra, performed during the last decade with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We discuss the results obtained with both vertical and adiabatic (vibronic) approximations, choosing relevant examples for several series of dyes. These examples include reproducing absorption wavelengths of numerous families of coloured molecules, understanding the specific band shape of amino-anthraquinones, optimising the properties of dyes used in solar cells, mimicking the fluorescence wavelengths of fluorescent brighteners and BODIPY dyes, studying optically active biomolecules and photo-induced proton transfer, as well as improving the properties of photochromes.

Abstract
Light-induced, spatially well-defined, reversible switching of surface properties enables the creation of remote-controlled smart surfaces. We have taken advantage of the unique high-resolution structuring capabilities of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) interference lithography to produce nanostructured photoresponsive polymer brushes. Patterns of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) were grafted from two different 100 μm thick fluoropolymer substrates by means of a radiation-initiated, grafting-from approach based on free-radical polymerization (FRP). Photochromic properties were introduced via novel one- or two-step postpolymerization modifications with spiropyran (SP) derivatives, which allowed us to control the number of photochromic groups on the polymer brushes. Depending on the degree of functionalization and the local chemical environment, the SP moieties can open upon UV-light exposure to form zwitterionic, deeply colored, and fluorescent merocyanines (MCs) and reclose to the colorless SP configuration via thermal or visible light-induced relaxation. Switching kinetics were studied by means of time-resolved fluorescence microscopy and compared with kinetic measurements of the SP moiety in solution. The results indicated the importance, for the intensity of the switching, of the local chemical environment provided by both the polymer brush and added solvents, and showed the predominant influence on the ring-closing kinetics of polar solvents, which stabilize the MC form. To allow further characterization of the polymer-brush arrangements on a macroscopic scale, similar, but unstructured brush systems were grafted from fluoropolymers after large-area activation using EUV radiation or argon plasma. All steps of the postpolymerization modification were characterized in detail using attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, a light-induced reversible static-contact-angle switch with a range of up to 15° for PGMA-SP brushes and up to 30° for PMA-SP brushes was demonstrated upon alternating UV- and visible-light irradiation.

Abstract
We present a theoretical study of Aun-dithienylethene hybrid systems (n = 3, 19, 25), where the organic molecule is covalently linked to a nanometer-scaled gold nanoparticle (NP). We aim at gaining insights on the optical properties of such photochromic devices and proposing a size-limited gold aggregate model able to recover the optical properties of the experimental system. We thus present a DFT-based calculation scheme to model the ground-state (conformation, energetic parameters) and excited-state properties (UV-visible absorption spectra) of this type of hybrid systems. Within this framework, the structural parameters (adsorption site, orientation, and internal structure of the photochrome) are found to be slightly dependent on the size/shape of the gold aggregate. The influence of the gold fragment on the optical properties of the resulting hybrid system is then discussed with the help of TD-DFT combined with an analysis of the virtual orbitals involved in the photochromic transitions. We show that, for the open hybrid isomer, the number of gold atoms is the key parameter to recover the photoactive properties that are experimentally observed. On the contrary, for hybrid closed systems, the three-dimensional structure of the metallic aggregate is of high impact. We thus conclude that Au25 corresponds to the most appropriate fragment to model nanometer-sized NP-DTE hybrid device.

Abstract
Structural and electronic properties of 1,2-bis(5-methyl-[2,2′-bithiophen]-4-yl)cyclopent-1-ene in closed form and open form under various external electric field with strengths, 0, 10 × 10−4, 20 × 10−4, 30 × 10−4, 40 × 10−4, and 50 × 10−4a.u., were studied using the DFT-B3LYP/6-31G* method. As a positive index, structural parameters, length of the photoisomers, and the electronic spatial extents are almost stable at different external electric fields. The UV-Vis electronic spectrum based on time-dependent density functional theory indicated that the HOMO → LUMO transition in the closed form under different electric field strengths is strongly allowed, whereas is very weak in the open form. Electronic response parameters such as the HOMO−LUMO gap, electric dipole moment, and polarizability showed that electric conductivity of the closed form at different field strengths is greater than in the open form. Results of electronic density of states show that at high external electric field, the conductivity of the open form and closed form will be probably equal and switching behavior cannot be observed. Isomerization of the closed form to the open form at different external electric fields can be considered as exothermic and spontaneous.

Abstract
In the past few years, spiropyran has emerged as the molecule-of-choice for the construction of novel dynamic materials. This unique molecular switch undergoes structural isomerisation in response to a variety of orthogonal stimuli, e.g. light, temperature, metal ions, redox potential, and mechanical stress. Incorporation of this switch onto macromolecular supports or inorganic scaffolds allows for the creation of robust dynamic materials. This review discusses the synthesis, switching conditions, and use of dynamic materials in which spiropyran has been attached to the surfaces of polymers, biomacromolecules, inorganic nanoparticles, as well as solid surfaces. The resulting materials show fascinating properties whereby the state of the switch intimately affects a multitude of useful properties of the support. The utility of the spiropyran switch will undoubtedly endow these materials with far-reaching applications in the near future.

Abstract
Photochromic materials are a family of compounds which can undergo reversible photo-switches between two different states or isomers with remarkably different properties. Inspired by their smart photo-switchable characteristics, a variety of light-driven functional materials have been exploited, such as ultrahigh-density optical data storage, molecular switches, logic gates, molecular wires, optic/electronic devices, sensors, bio-imaging and so on. This review commences with a brief description of exciting progress in this field, from systems in solution to modified functional surfaces. Further development of these photo-switchable systems into practical applications as well as existing challenges are also discussed and put in prospect.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of nanohybrid structures consisting of an azobenzene compound grafted on the surface of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Characteristic bathochromic shifts indicate that the azobenzene photochromic molecules self-assemble onto the surface of the nanocrystals. The extent of packing is dependent on the shape of the nanoparticle. ZnO nanorods, with flat facets, enable a tighter organization of the molecules in the self-assembled monolayer than in the case of nanodots that display a more curvated shape. Consistently, the efficiency of photochromic switching of the self-assembled monolayer on ZnO nanoparticles is also shown to be strongly affected by nanoparticle shape.

Abstract
Theories of molecular electronic devices (MEDs) are quite involved in general. However, various prominent features of MEDs can be understood drawing only on elementary quantum theory. To support this point of view, we provide a two component orbital theory that enables one to reproduce various important features of MEDs. In this theory, the device orbitals are divided into two components, each of which is obtained from simple rules. To illustrate our two-component model, we apply it to explain, among other things, the conductance suppression in cross-conjugated systems and the dependence of the conductance on the contact position in aromatic systems.

Abstract
We have investigated the conductance of individual optically switchable dithienylethene molecules in both their conducting closed configuration and nonconducting open configuration, using the technique of repeatedly formed break-junctions. We employed pyridine groups to link the molecules to gold electrodes in order to achieve relatively well-defined molecular contacts and stable conductance. For the closed form of each molecule, we observed a peak in the conductance histogram constructed without any data selection, allowing us to determine the conductance of the fully stretched molecules. For two different dithienylethene derivatives, these closed-configuration conductances were (3.3 ± 0.5) × 10(-5)G(0) and (1.5 ± 0.5) × 10(-6)G(0), where G(0) is the conductance quantum. For the open configuration of the molecules, the existence of electrical conduction via the molecule was evident in traces of conductance versus junction displacement, but the conductance of the fully stretched molecules was less than the noise floor of our measurement. We can set a lower limit of 30 for the on/off ratio for the simplest dithienylethene derivative we have investigated. Density functional theory calculations predict an on/off ratio consistent with this result.
