Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents are a new class of green solvents that are being explored as an alternative for used nuclear fuel and critical material recycling. However, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding metal behavior in them. This paper explores the underlying chemistry of rare-earth elements in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents by using a multi-technique spectroscopic methodology. Results show that speciation is highly dependent on the choice of the hydrogen-bond donor. Collected EXAFS data showed Ln3+ coordination with ethylene glycol and urea in their respective solvents and coordination with chloride in the lactic acid system. Generalized coordination environments were determined to be [LnL4-5], [LnL7-10], and [LnL5-6] in the ethylene glycol, urea, and lactic acid systems, respectively. Collected UV/vis spectra for Nd3+ and Er3+ showed variations with changing solvents, showing that Ln-Cl interactions do not dominate in these systems. Luminescence studies were consistent, showing varying emission spectra with varying solvent systems. The shortest luminescent lifetimes were observed in the choline chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent, suggesting coordination through O-H groups. Combining all collected data allowed Eu3+ coordination geometries to be assigned.

Abstract
A half-conjugate polydentate Salamo-Salen hybrid ligand, H5L, containing two unique N2O2 pockets was first designed so that these metal ions in the complexes appear in different coordination modes. Two heterohexanuclear 3d-s double-helical cluster complexes, [Zn4Ca2L2(μ1-OAc)2(EtOH)2]·2EtOH (1; EtOH = ethanol) and [Zn4Sr2L2(μ2-OAc)2(MeOH)2]·2CH2Cl2 (2; MeOH = methanol), are reported that are formed through the reaction of H5L with zinc(II) and calcium(II) acetate or strontium(II) acetate, respectively. IR spectral analysis of the two complexes showed the existence of monodentate- and bidentate-coordinated acetate ions. The fluorescence properties of the ligand and its two heterohexanuclear complexes were explored in MeOH and water solutions, separately. In addition, theoretical calculations (density functional theory, interaction region indicator, and bond order) were performed to further understand the formation of a single-molecular double helix and the electron distribution characteristics of the two complexes.

Abstract
Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) are novel synthetic antioxidant agents proposed for treating oxidative stress-related diseases. The synthesis of high-quality CNPs for biomedical applications remains a challenging task. A major concern for a safe use of CNPs as pharmacological agents is their tendency to agglomerate. Herein we present a simple direct precipitation approach, exploiting ethylene glycol as synthesis co-factor, to synthesize at room temperature nanocrystalline sub-10 nm CNPs, followed by a surface silanization approach to improve nanoparticle dispersibility in biological fluids. CNPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurements. CNP redox activity was studied in abiotic systems using electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements, and in vitro on human cell models. In-situ silanization improved CNP colloidal stability, in comparison with non-functionalized particles, and allowed at the same time improving their original biological activity, yielding thus functionalized CNPs suitable for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Sm(III)-based ionic liquids incorporating hexanitratosamarate(III) anions were obtained and fully characterized as novel Sm(III)-containing organic complexes. The structure of the ionic liquids was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (1: monoclinic system C2/c space group with cell parameters: a = 19.5624(4) Å, b = 10.11895(18) Å, c = 33.2256(6) Å, β = 101.2912(18)°, Z = 8). The central Sm(III) ion is 12-coordinated by six bidentate nitrate ligands with twelve oxygen donors to form a [Sm(NO3)6](3-) anion. The low melting point, high thermostability and wide liquid range of these ionic liquids were determined in detail. All the complexes 1-5 display orange luminescence, rather than red luminescence as in most Sm(III)-containing organic complexes. Three characteristic monochromatic bands and an intense emission, derived from (4)G5/2→(6)HJ (J = 5/2, 7/2, and 9/2) intraconfigurational f-f transitions, were revealed. All these complexes exhibit long luminescence lifetimes.
