Abstract
A kinetic study is reported for reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl X-substituted-benzenesulfonates (1a-1f) and Y-substituted-phenyl benzenesulfonates (2a-2f) with Z-substituted-pyridines. The reactions proceed through S‒O and C‒O bond scissions competitively. The Yukawa-Tsuno plot for the reactions of 1a-1f with 4-oxypyridine (S‒O bond fission) exhibits an excellent linearity. The Brønsted-type plot for the reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl benzenesulfonate (1d) with pyridines (S‒O bond fission) is also linear with βnuc = 0.62. The Brønsted-type plot for the reactions of 2a-2f with 4-oxypyridines (S‒O bond fission) is linear with βlg= ‒1.17. Thus, the reactions have been concluded to proceed through a concerted mechanism, in which leaving-group expulsion is significantly more advanced than bond formation between the electrophilic center and nucleophile at the transition state. The Hammett plot for the reactions of 1a-1f with 4-oxypyridine (C‒O bond fission) exhibits scattered points with ρX= 0.98. The Brønsted-type plot for the reactions of 1d with Z-substituted-pyridines (C‒O bond fission) results in an excellent linear correlation with βnuc = 0.38. Thus, the reactions (C‒O bond fission) have been concluded to proceed through a stepwise mechanism with a Meisenheimer complex, in which expulsion of the leaving group occurs after the rate-determining step. Factors governing regioselectivity and reaction mechanism are discussed.

Abstract
The reactions of 1,3,5-triaminobenzene derivatives with 2,3,4-trinitrothiophene and 2-bromo-3,4,5-trinitrothiophene gave new all-conjugated compounds bearing both an electron-withdrawing and an electron-donor moiety on the same unit. The reactions with 2,3,4-trinitrothiophene offered evidence, by NMR spectroscopy at low temperature, of the formation of new labile Wheland-Meisenheimer intermediates whereas at room temperature stable unexpected products derived from the attack of the nucleophile at C-4 with replacement of the nitro group were isolated. Their formation caused, in turn, the obtainment of a salt between 1-nitroso-2,4,6-triaminobenzenes and 2,4-dinitrothiophen-3-ol. The reactions with 2-bromo-3,4,5-trinitrothiophene produced in good yields the SNAr substitution product with the displacement of the bromide. All the new coupling products obtained are of applicative interest, considering the increasing concern for highly conjugated π-systems in solar energy conversion or optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
The C–C coupling reaction between neutral aromatic carbon nucleophiles such as 1,3,5-triamino- and 1,3,5-trihydroxy-benzene derivatives and 7-chloro-4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (Cl-DNBF) or 7-chloro-4,6-dinitrobenzofurazan (Cl-DNBZ) gave in high yield the corresponding conjugated structures, which are of potential interest in the materials field. When chlorine is absent on the electrophile, as in 4,6-dinitrobenzofurazan (DNBZ), the reaction with 1,3,5-triaminobenzene derivatives produces Wheland–Meisenheimer (WM) zwitterionic intermediates, intercepted and fully characterized via NMR at low temperature, whereas stable Meisenheimer complexes (M) were isolated in the reaction of phloroglucinol with 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene. The latter also gave exclusively M complexes when reacted with 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (DNBF), or 4,6-dinitrotetrazolopyridine (DNTP). The detection of WM or M intermediates can be rationalized by invoking the substituent stabilization ability of the positive charge in WM intermediates, on going from neutral carbon nucleophiles 1,3,5-triaminobenzenes to 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene derivatives. Furthermore, variable-temperature NMR experiments on the M intermediates gave insights into the rotational barrier about the newly formed C–C bond. Novel intermediates of the SEAr/SNAr reaction (WM or M complexes) have been detected and characterized by NMR at low temperature.![]()

Abstract
Aromatic substitution reactions between 1,3-diaminobenzene and chloronitrobenzofurazan derivatives have never been reported so far. The aim of the current study was to synthesize novel electron-donor and -acceptor architectures of interest in applied fields and to provide new insights on the nucleophilic behavior of 1,3-diaminobenzenes. The reaction of 1,3-dipiperidinyl-, 1,3-dimorpholinyl-, 1,3-dipyrrolidinyl-, or 1,3-dimethylamino-benzene with 7-chloro-4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan or with a series of chloro-nitrobenzofurazans has been carried out in mild conditions. The partners reactivity has been investigated by monitoring the reaction course through 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The reaction occurred in a regioselective way, providing in good yields the novel C-C coupling compounds. Indications on the reactivity behavior for the studied nucleophiles have been relieved.

Abstract
New 5-azo substituted thiazole derivatives have been obtained, under mild conditions and in good yields, by the reaction between 2-N-pyrrolidinylthiazole and a series of aryldiazonium salts bearing, mainly in the para position, groups with different electronic effects. The NMR spectra of the products show broad signals of the methylene groups in the alpha position to the pyrrolidinyl nitrogen, suggesting a hindered rotation around the C2-N bond, of which a double bond character was also evidenced by X-ray diffraction analyses. The free energies of activation for the rotational processes have been obtained from (1)H NMR experiments and computer simulations at different temperatures and provided good correlation with the σ constants of the substituents on the 'remote' benzene ring. This represents an unexpected and peculiar result since the restricted rotation around the C2-N bond was shown to be influenced by a substituent situated very far away. 2,4-Di-N-pyrrolidinylthiazole showed a much greater reactivity than 2-N-pyrrolidinylthiazole with aryldiazonium salts.

Abstract
New all-conjugated C-C coupling products bearing both an electron-poor and an electron-rich aromatic moiety have been obtained from the reaction between sym-triaminobenzene derivatives and a series of isomeric chloro-nitrobenzofurazans. The reactions occur under mild reaction conditions, and in some cases a different behaviour depending on the presence, or not, of triethylamine was observed. From 1,3,5-tris(N-morpholinyl)benzene and 5-chloro-4-nitrobenzofurazan in the presence of triethylamine an unexpected product derived from the shift of the nitro group from C-4 to C-5 of the electrophile and bearing the nucleophile at position 4 was obtained. Moreover, from the coupling between 1,3,5-tris(N-pyrrolidinyl)benzene and 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan a highly stable Wheland intermediate was isolated.

Abstract
A kinetic study on SNAr reactions of 1-(4-nitrophenoxy)-2,4-dinitrobenzene (1a) with various anionic nucleophiles in 80 mol% water – 20 mol% DMSO at 25.0 °C is reported. The Brønsted-type plot for the reaction of 1a with a series of substituted phenoxides and HOO− results in an excellent linear correlation with βnuc = 1.17. However, OH− exhibits dramatic negative deviation from the Brønsted-type plot, while N3−, C6H5S−, and butane-2,3-dione monoximate (Ox−) deviate positively from linearity. HOO− is 680-fold more reactive than OH− but does not exhibit the α-effect. In contrast, Ox− is 166-fold more reactive than isobasic 4-Cl−C6H4O− and exhibits the α-effect. Differential solvation effects have been suggested to be responsible for the α-effect in this study, i.e., Ox− exhibits the α-effect, since it is 5.7 kcal/mol less strongly solvated than 4-Cl−C6H4O− in the reaction medium, while HOO− does not show the α-effect due to a strong requirement for partial desolvation before nucleophilic attack. The highly enhanced reactivity of polarizable N3− and C6H5S− and extremely decreased reactivity of nonpolarizable OH− are in accord with the hard–soft acid and base principle.

Abstract
The reaction of 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (DNBF) with 1-trimethylsilyloxybuta-1,3-diene (8) is shown to afford a mixture of [2+4] diastereomeric cycloadducts (10, 11) through stepwise addition-cyclization pathways. Zwitterionic intermediate sigma-adduct 9, which is involved in the processes, has been successfully characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and UV/visible spectrophotometry in acetonitrile. A kinetic study has been carried out in this solvent that revealed that the rate of formation of 9 nicely fits the three-parameter equation log k=s(E+N) developed by Mayr to describe the feasibility of nucleophile-electrophile combinations. This significantly adds to the NMR spectroscopic evidence that the overall cycloadditions take place through a stepwise mechanism. The reaction has also been studied in dichloromethane and toluene. In these less polar solvents, the stability of 9 is not sufficient to allow direct characterization by spectroscopic methods, but a kinetic investigation supports the view that stepwise processes are still operating. An informative comparison of our reaction with previous interactions firmly identified as prototype stepwise cycloadditions is made on the basis of the global electrophilicity index, omega, defined by Parr within the density functional theory, and highlighted by Domingo et al. as a powerful tool for understanding Diels-Alder reactions.

Abstract
The interaction of 4,6-dinitrobenzo[d]isoxazole-3-carbonitrile (5a) with methoxide ion has been kinetically investigated in methanol and a 20:80 (v/v) MeOH-Me2SO mixture. In methanol, stopped-flow experiments have revealed that a monomethoxyl sigma-adduct (5a-Me) is first formed, resulting from a fast MeO- addition at the unsubstituted 7-carbon. Rate and equilibrium constants for this sigma-complexation process could be determined, allowing a ranking of 5a within the pKa scale established for Meisenheimer electrophiles in methanol. With a pKa value of 13.50, the electrophilicity of 5a falls in the range of 1,3,6,8-tetranitronaphthalene, 2,4-dinitrothiophene or 4-nitrobenzofuroxan. This corresponds to a two-pKa units increase in electrophilicity from that of TNB, the common reference in sigma-complex chemistry but it is notably below that of so-called superelectrophilic molecules like 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan. In addition to its ease of sigma-complexation, 5a is found to undergo a slow but thermodynamically favourable addition of MeO- to the cyano group bonded to the isoxazole ring, leading to a complete conversion of the adduct 5a-Me into a dinitroimidate 6. The reactivity of 6 could be kinetically assessed. Going to 80% Me2SO still afforded initially the adduct 5a-Me but this anionic species undergoes addition of a second molecule of MeO- to the CN group, giving a dianion whose structure is unprecedented in the literature. Combining the above results with synthetic observations showing that 5a can readily contribute to S(N)Ar reactions under appropriate experimental conditions emphasizes the multifaceted electrophilic reactivity of this electron-deficient heterocycle.

Abstract
1H NMR studies in [2H6]-DMSO show that the carbanion 4 from bis(phenylsulfonyl)methane reacts with 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan to yield a σ-adduct that undergoes base-catalysed elimination to yield an alkene derivative. Rate constants, measured spectrophotometrically, are reported for the corresponding reactions in methanol of 4 with 4-nitrobenzofurazan and some derivatives that give adducts at the 5-position. The intrinsic rate constant, ko, for this process has a value of 1.5 ± 0.5. The 5-adducts undergo methoxide-catalysed elimination of phenylsulfinic acid to yield alkene derivatives and rate constants for this process are reported.Key words: carbanions, 4-nitrobenzofurazan, σ-adducts, elimination reactions.
