Abstract
By employing the semi-rigid multidentate carboxylic acid ligand 4,4',4''-{[(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(methylene)]tris(oxy)}tribenzoic acid (denoted H3L), a new lanthanum coordination polymer, namely poly[[bis(dimethylformamide)(μ6-4,4',4''-{[(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(methylene)]tris(oxy)}tribenzoato)lanthanum(III)] dimethylformamide tetrasolvate 0.25-hydrate], {[La(C33H27O9)(C3H7NO)2]·4C3H7NO·0.25H2O}n or {[La(L)(DMF)2]·4(DMF)·0.25(H2O)}n (DMF is dimethylformamide) (1), was prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy and photoluminescence studies. The asymmetric unit contains one LaIII cation, one anionic L3- ligand, two coordinated DMF molecules, four free DMF molecules and one-quarter of a free water molecule. Compound 1 possesses (3,6)-connected two-dimensional kgd topology sheets consisting of secondary building units of La2 clusters and L3- ligands, which further stack into three-dimensional supramolecular networks through π-π interactions. Compound 1 exhibits a photoluminescence emission at room temperature, with a peak at 410 nm, owing to a ligand-centred excited state.

Abstract
A new three-dimensional europium-based metal-organic framework has been synthesized with the newly designed ligand L (6-[1-(4-carboxyphenyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]nicotinic acid). This compound acts as a dual sensor for the phosphate anion and Fe3+ ion in aqueous media. The mechanistic aspect of this selectivity and sensitivity was explored through several spectroscopic methods and then correlated with the corresponding structure.

Abstract
A series of lanthanide-based coordination polymers {[Yb1-xErx(4,4'-bpdo)3(H2O)2](CF3SO3)3}∞ were synthesised by solvent diffusion techniques, where 4,4'-bpdo = 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide, and using differing mole fractions of Yb(iii) and Er(iii) which were systematically varied (x = 0, 0.05, 0.20, 0.50 and 1). All of the materials obtained were characterised using elemental analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and solid-state photoluminescence studies. Structurally, the coordination polymers crystallise as an isomorphous series of infinite 2D sheets, which contain two inner sphere water molecules, and are isostructural with a previously characterised homometallic Yb(iii) compound. In addition to the normal Near Infra-Red (NIR) luminescence, these compounds also demonstrate upconversion emission upon 980 nm excitation. Upconversion luminescence measurements reveal visible emission in the red, green, and blue regions corresponding to the (2)H11/2→(4)I15/2, (4)F9/2→(4)I15/2 and (2)H9/2→(4)I15/2 transitions of the Er(iii) cation upon two and three-photon excitation. We also observed weak emission from the Er(iii) cation in the UV region for the first time in a Ln-MOF based material.

Abstract
Three novel binary Tb(III) complexes (TbL2, TbL, and Tb2L; L=3,3',4,4'-biphenyl tetracarboxylic ligand) were synthesized by changing the molar ratio of Tb(III) to 3,3',4,4'-biphthalic anhydride (BPDA) (1∶2, 1∶1, and 2∶1, respectively). IR spectra indicate that there are two coordination modes of the carboxylate ligands with Tb3+ ions in the complexes. Most of them are in bridging mode; the others are in chelating mode. These complexes all have good thermal stability. The photophysical properties of these complexes are studied in detail using UV absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, and transient fluorescence spectra. The results indicate that the photoluminescence properties of the complexes depend strongly on the molar ratio of Tb(III) to BPDA. When the molar ratio of Tb(III) to BPDA is 1∶1, complex TbL exhibits the strongest yellow light emission among the three Tb(III) complexes. However, complex Tb2L exhibits a weaker yellowish-green light emission when the molar ratio of Tb(III) to BPDA is 2∶1. The phenomenon of the yellow emission from terbium complexes is rarely reported.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks based on trivalent lanthanides (LnMOFs) are a very promising class of materials for addressing the challenges in engineering of luminescent centres. Lanthanide-bearing phosphors find numerous applications in lighting, optical communications, photonics and biomedical devices. In this critical review we discuss the potential of LnMOFs as multifunctional systems, which combine light emission with properties such as microporosity, magnetism, chirality, molecule and ion sensing, catalysis and activity as multimodal imaging contrast agents. We argue that these materials present a unique chance of observing synergy between several of these properties, such as the coupling between photoluminescence and magnetism. Moreover, an integrated approach towards the design of efficient, stable, cheap, environmentally-friendly and multifunctional luminescent LnMOFs is still missing. Although research into LnMOFs is at its early stage and much basic knowledge is still needed, the field is ripe for new ideas, which will enable sensor devices and photonic prototypes to become a commercial reality (81 references).

Abstract
In the title coordination polymer, [La2(C8H4O4)3(H2O)2]n, there are two independent LaIII atoms which are coordinated differently in slightly distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal and slightly disorted bicapped trigonal-prismatic environments. The LaIII ions are bridged by μ4-isophthalate ligands, forming two-dimensional layers. In the crystal structure, these layers are connected by intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network.
