Ubiquity of cis-Halide → Isocyanide Direct Interligand Interaction in Organometallic Complexes

We recently reported a density functional theory (DFT) analysis of the Nb(V)-C bond in various NbCl₅(L) complexes, discovering that the carbon ligand L receives electronic density from the metal (classical back-donation) and from the chlorides in the cis position (direct interligand interaction). Here we report the synthesis and the structural characterization of two new coordination compounds of niobium pentahalides, i.e., NbX₅(CNXyl) (X = Cl, Br; Xyl = 2,6-C₆H₃Me₂), and the corresponding DFT analyses of the Nb(V)-C bond using the Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence-Charge Displacement (NOCV-CD) approach, confirming the presence of a cis-halide → isocyanide direct interligand interaction. To verify whether the latter is limited to Nb complexes or not, we performed a NOCV-CD analysis on a series of several organometallic complexes based on Ti(IV), Nb(V), Ta(V), Rh(III), Pd(II), and Au(III), all of which bear one halide ligand and m-xylyl-isocyanide in a mutual cis position, revealing that the cis-halide → isocyanide interaction is always present.

Stable coordination complexes of α-diimines with Nb(v) and Ta(v) halides

Uncommon coordination compounds of high valent transition metal halides with N-aryl α-diimines have been obtained, without the need for reducing agents to quench the activation power of the metal centre.

Probing the electronic structure of a copper(ii) complex by CW- and pulse-EPR spectroscopy

Formation of a Cationic Vinylimido Group upon C-H Activation of Nitriles by Trialkylamines in the Presence of TaCl5

We report a new CH3CN activation mode where an imido group is directly formed by deprotonation of the nitrile coordinated to the highly Lewis acidic Ta(V) center. The unexpected deprotonation of TaCl5(CH3CN) by NEt3 resulted in isolation of the triethylammonium vinylimido complex [HNEt3][Ta(NC(CH2)NEt3)Cl5]. The reaction is proposed to proceed through rearrangement of the initial nucleophilic carbanion to the electrophilic azaallene/carbocation intermediate. The use of more sterically hindered (i-Pr)CN and weakly nucleophilic N(i-Pr)2Et resulted in the isolation of a vinylimido group formed upon dimerization of deprotonated nitriles, suggesting deprotonation as the first step of the transformation.

Interesting copper(ii)-assisted transformations of 2-acetylpyridine and 2-benzoylpyridine

Quantifying the Electron Donor and Acceptor Abilities of the Ketimide Ligands in M(N═C(t)Bu2)4 (M = V, Nb, Ta)

Addition of 4 equiv of Li(N═C(t)Bu2) to VCl3 in THF, followed by addition of 0.5 equiv of I2, generates the homoleptic V(IV) ketimide complex, V(N═C(t)Bu2)4 (1), in 42% yield. Similarly, reaction of 4 equiv of Li(N═C(t)Bu2) with NbCl4(THF)2 in THF affords the homoleptic Nb(IV) ketimide complex, Nb(N═C(t)Bu2)4 (2), in 55% yield. Seeking to extend the series to the tantalum congener, a new Ta(IV) starting material, TaCl4(TMEDA) (3), was prepared via reduction of TaCl5 with Et3SiH, followed by addition of TMEDA. Reaction of 3 with 4 equiv of Li(N═C(t)Bu2) in THF results in the isolation of a Ta(V) ketimide complex, Ta(Cl)(N═C(t)Bu2)4 (5), which can be isolated in 32% yield. Reaction of 5 with Tl(OTf) yields Ta(OTf)(N═C(t)Bu2)4 (6) in 44% yield. Subsequent reduction of 6 with Cp*2Co in toluene generates the homoleptic Ta(IV) congener Ta(N═C(t)Bu2)4 (7), although the yields are poor. All three homoleptic group 5 ketimide complexes exhibit squashed tetrahedral geometries in the solid state, as determined by X-ray crystallography. This geometry leads to a d(x(2)-y(2))(1) ((2)B1 in D(2d)) ground state, as supported by DFT calculations. EPR spectroscopic analysis of 1 and 2, performed at X- and Q-band frequencies (∼9 and 35 GHz, respectively), further supports the (2)B1 ground-state assignment, whereas comparison of 1, 2, and 7 with related group 5 tetra(aryl), tetra(amido), and tetra(alkoxo) complexes shows a higher M-L covalency in the ketimide-metal interaction. In addition, a ligand field analysis of 1 and 2 demonstrates that the ketimide ligand is both a strong π-donor and strong π-acceptor, an unusual combination found in very few organometallic ligands.

A structurally-characterized NbCl5–NHC adduct

The X-ray structure of 2a is the first one reported for a monodentate NHC–niobium compound and bears the highest oxidation state ever found for a metal centre in a transition metal halide–NHC adduct.

Unusual room temperature activation of 1,2-dialkoxyalkanes by niobium and tantalum pentachlorides

The outcome of the reactions of MCl(5) (M = Nb, 1a; M = Ta, 1b) with 1,2-dialkoxyalkanes [i.e. MeO(CH(2))(2)OMe (dme), EtO(CH(2))(2)OEt, MeOCH(2)CH(Me)OMe, MeO(CH(2))(2)OCH(2)Cl, MeO(CH(2))(2)O(CH(2))(2)OMe (diglyme)] depends strictly on the stoichiometry. In the 1 : 1 molar ratio reactions, single C-O bond cleavage occurs, resulting in formation of alkyl chloride and of the complexes [upper bond 1 start]MCl(4)[O(R)CH(R')CH(2)O][upper bond 1 end] [M = Nb, R = Me, R' = H, 3a; M = Ta, R = Me, R' = H, 3b; M = Nb, R = Et, R' = H, 5; M = Nb, R = R' = Me, 6; M = Nb, R = CH(2)Cl, R' = H, 7; M = Nb, R = (CH(2))(2)O(Me)NbCl(5), R' = H, 8], which have been characterized spectroscopically. Moreover, minor amounts of the oxo-bridged adducts MOCl(3)(dme)MCl(5) (M = Nb, 4a; M = Ta, 4b) have been isolated in the reactions involving dme. On the other hand, compounds react with two (or more) equivalents of dme mainly via a multiple C-O bond cleavage process, affording MOCl(3)(dme) (M = Nb, 2a; M = Ta, 2b), 1,4-dioxane and methyl chloride. The oxychloride compounds MOCl(3) (M = Nb, 11a; M = Ta, 11b) have been efficiently obtained by addition of TiCl(4) to 2. Compound 2a is reduced in high yield to the Nb(III) species NbCl(3)(dme), 12, upon treatment with SnBu(3)H. The oxychloride NbOCl(3)(diglyme), 9, 1,4-dioxane, CH(3)Cl and the hexachloroniobate salt [MeOCH(2)CH(2)OCH(2)CH(2)O(H)Me][NbCl(6)], 10, have been identified as products of the reaction of 1a with two equivalents of diglyme. The 1 : 2 molar ratio reaction of 1a with MeOCH(2)CH(Me)OMe gives 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxane. Compound 1a reacts with two equivalents of EtO(CH(2))(2)OEt or MeO(CH(2))(2)OCH(2)Cl yielding Cl(CH(2))(2)OCH(2)CH(3) or O(CH(2)Cl)(2) and diglyme, respectively, but not dioxane, suggesting that fragmentation pathways different from that found for dme are operating. The X-ray molecular structures of 4a, 4b and 10 have been determined.
