A sensitive OFF–ON–OFF fluorescent probe for the cascade sensing of Al3+ and F− ions in aqueous media and living cells

A simple Schiff-base ligand 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde semicarbazone (HNS) was synthesized and characterized. Based on the combined effect of inhibition of CH Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N isomerization and chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), HNS functions as a fluorescence “turn on” sensor for Al³⁺ in buffered aqueous media. Based on the strong affinity of Al³⁺ to F⁻ ions, the in situ generated Al³⁺–HNS complex can also be utilized as an effective chemosensor for F⁻ sensing by metal displacement approach, ensuing quenching of fluorescence by the reversible return of HNS from Al³⁺–HNS complex. Thus a method using a single probe for the detection of both Al³⁺ and F⁻ ions is developed. The system exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for Al³⁺ and F⁻ ions and the detection limits were found to be as low as 6.75 × 10⁻⁸ M and 7.89 × 10⁻⁷ M, respectively. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this probe has been examined in living cells.

Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic drop for preconcentration and determination of trace amounts of copper by flame atomic absorption spectrometry

A novel, simple, rapid, sensitive, inexpensive and environmentally friendly dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method based on the solidification of a floating organic drop (DLLME-SFO) was developed for the determination of copper by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). N-o-Vanillidine-2-amino-p-cresol was used as a chelating ligand and 1-undecanol was selected as an extraction solvent. The main parameters affecting the performance of DLLME-SFO, such as sample pH, volume of extraction solvent, extraction time, concentration of the chelating ligand, salt effect, centrifugation time and sample volume were investigated and optimized. The effect of interfering ions on the recovery of copper was also examined. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit (3σ) was 0.93μgL^-1 for Cu using a sample volume of 20mL, yielding a preconcentration factor of 20. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of Cu in tap, river and seawater, rice flour and black tea samples as well as certified reference materials.

Spectrofluorimetric determination of aluminum ions via complexation with luteolin in absolute ethanol

An optimized and validated spectrofluorimetric method has been developed for the rapid determination of aluminum in absolute ethanol. The method is based on the chelation of aluminum and luteolin which results in a complex exhibiting an intense emission signal. The characterization of Al-luteolin complex was studied using ultraviolet-visible spectrometry, infrared spectrometry, fluorescence and mass spectrometry. The complex stoichiometry ratio of aluminum:luteolin was 1:2. The fluorescence of the complex was monitored at an emission wavelength of 545 nm with excitation at 518 nm. The linear concentration range was 6.5 × 10(-7) to 4.0 × 10(-5)  M with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.998. The detection limit was 5.0 × 10(-7)  M. The method was appropriately validated and yielded relative standard deviations of < 2.3% (n = 5), which was considered acceptable. The method was successfully applied in the determination of aluminum in river water, skin care products and pharmaceutical samples.

Development of a fluorescent chelating ligand for scandium ion having a Schiff base moiety

A fluorescent ligand, 1-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde)-4-aminosalicylhydrazone (HMB-ASH), was newly designed and synthesized, and its fluorescence characteristics for metal ions were investigated in the pH range 3.0-10.5 (at a difference of 0.5 for each metal). After testing 31 different metal ions, it was found that HMB-ASH was able to emit fluorescence intensely at 512 nm with an excitation wavelength of 353 nm in the presence of Sc(3+), one of the rare earth metals, at pH values around 3.5 and 8.0. The other metal ions hardly showed fluorescence with HMB-ASH. The fluorescence was more intense at pH 8.0, and the detection limit of Sc(3+) in a buffer solution (pH 8.0) was approximately 18.8 nmol L(-1) (0.85 ppb).

Determination of gallium at trace levels using a spectrofluorimetric method in synthetic U-Ga and Ga-As solutions

A simple, easy to use and selective spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of trace levels of gallium has been developed. A new Schiff base, N-o-vanillidine-2-amino-p-cresol (OVAC) was synthesized and its fluorescence activity with gallium investigated. Based on this chelation reaction, a spectrofluorimetric method has been developed for the determination of gallium in synthetically prepared Ga-U and Ga-As samples buffered at pH 4.0 using acetic acid-sodium acetate. The chelation reaction between Ga(III) and N-o-vanillidine-2-amino-p-cresol was very fast, requiring only 30min at room temperature to complex completely. The limit of detection (LOD) (3sigma) for Ga(III) was 7.17 nM (0.50 microgL(-1)), determined from the analysis of 11 different solutions of 20 microg L(-1) Ga(III).
