Photoswitching electron transport properties of an azobenzene containing thiol-SAM

Mapping reversible photoswitching of molecular resistance fluctuations during the conformational transformation of azobenzene-terminated molecular switches

We report a direct mapping and analysis of electrical noise in azobenzene-terminated molecular monolayers, revealing reversible photoswitching of the molecular resistance fluctuations in the layers. In this work, a conducting atomic force microscope combined with a homemade spectrum analyzer was used to image electrical current and noise at patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of azobenzene-terminated molecular wires on a gold substrate. We analyzed the current and noise imaging data to obtain maps of molecular resistances and amount of mean-square fluctuations in the resistances of the regions of trans-azobenzene and a cis/trans-azobenzene mixture. We revealed that the fluctuations in the molecular resistances in the SAMs were enhanced after the trans-to-cis isomerization, while the resistances were reduced. This result could be attributed to enhanced disorders in the molecular arrangements in the cis-SAMs. Furthermore, we observed that the changes in the resistance fluctuations were reversible with respect to repeated trans-to-cis and cis-to-trans isomerizations, indicating that the effects originated from reversible photoswitching of the molecular structures rather than irreversible damages of the molecules. These findings provide valuable insights into the electrical fluctuations in photoswitchable molecules, which could be utilized in further studies on molecular switches and molecular electronics in general.

Electrochemical modification of gold electrodes with azobenzene derivatives by diazonium reduction

An electrochemical study of Au electrodes electrografted with azobenzene (AB), Fast Garnet GBC (GBC) and Fast Black K (FBK) diazonium compounds is presented. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy investigations reveal the formation of multilayer films. The elemental composition of the aryl layers is examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical measurements reveal a quasi-reversible voltammogram of the Fe(CN)6 (3-/4-) redox couple on bare Au and a sigmoidal shape for the GBC- and FBK-modified Au electrodes, thus demonstrating that electron transfer is blocked due to the surface modification. The electrografted AB layer results in strongest inhibition of the Fe(CN)6 (3-/4-) response compared with other aryl layers. The same tendencies are observed for oxygen reduction; however, the blocking effect is not as strong as in the Fe(CN)6 (3-/4-) redox system. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements allowed the calculation of low charge-transfer rates to the Fe(CN)6 (3-) probe for the GBC- and FBK-modified Au electrodes in relation to bare Au. From these measurements it can be concluded that the FBK film is less compact or presents more pinholes than the electrografted GBC layer.

Photoresponsive molecules in well-defined nanoscale environments

Stimuli-responsive molecules are key building blocks of functional molecular materials and devices. These molecules can operate in a range of environments. A molecule's local environment will dictate its conformation, reactivity, and function; by controlling the local environment we can ultimately develop interfaces of individual molecules with the macroscopic environment. By isolating molecules in well-defined environments, we are able to obtain both accurate measurements and precise control. We exploit defect sites in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to direct the functional molecules into precise locations, providing a basis for the measurements and engineering of functional molecular systems. The structure and functional moieties of the SAM can be tuned to control not only the intermolecular interactions but also molecule-substrate interactions, resulting in extraction or control of desired molecular functions. Herein, we report our progress toward the assembly and measurements of photoresponsive molecules and their precise assemblies in SAM matrices.

High on-off conductance switching ratio in optically-driven self-assembled conjugated molecular systems

A new azobenzene-thiophene molecular switch is designed, synthesized, and used to form self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on gold. An "on/off" conductance ratio up to 7 x 10(3) (with an average value of 1.5 x 10(3)) is reported. The "on" conductance state is clearly identified to the cis isomer of the azobenzene moiety. The high on/off ratio is explained in terms of photoinduced, configuration-related changes in the electrode-molecule interface energetics (changes in the energy position of the molecular orbitals with respect to the Fermi energy of electrodes) in addition to changes in the tunnel barrier length (length of the molecules). First principles density functional calculations demonstrate a better delocalization of the frontier orbitals as well as a stronger electronic coupling between the azobenzene moiety and the electrode for the cis configuration over the trans one. Measured photoionization cross sections for the molecules in the SAM are close to the known values for azobenzene derivatives in solution.

Device variability and circuit redundancy in signal processing based on nanoswitches

Signal processing based on molecular switches whose conductance can be tuned by an external stimulus between two (on and off) states has been proposed recently (Cervera et al 2008 J. Appl. Phys. 104 084317). The basic building block is a metal nanoparticle linked to two electrodes by an organic ligand and a nanoswitch. The net charge delivered by this nanostructure exhibits a sharp resonance when the alternating potential applied between the electrodes has the same frequency as the periodic variation between the on and off conductance states induced on the nanoswitch. This resonance can be used to process an external signal by selectively extracting the weight of the different harmonics. However, because of the fabrication process at the nanoscale, the nanostructures will show a significant variability in the physical characteristics. By using a phenomenological model that includes this variability, the stochastic nature of electron transference, and the thermal noise, we demonstrate that reliable signal processing can still be achieved by adapting the number of nanoswitches per bit of information (circuit redundancy) to the nanostructure tolerance (device variability). Extensive kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show that a moderate level of redundancy can compensate for significant nanostructure variability. This result gives support to the concept of ensembles of redundant switches as reliable components for signal processing at the nanoscale.
