Abstract
1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been extensively used as the chirality source in the fields of molecular recognition, asymmetric synthesis, and materials science. The direct electrophilic substitution at the aromatic rings of the optically active BINOL has been developed as one of the most convenient strategies to structurally modify BINOL for diverse applications. High regioselectivity has been achieved for the reaction of BINOL with electrophiles. Depending upon the reaction conditions and substitution patterns, various functional groups can be introduced to the specific positions, such as the 6-, 5-, 4-, and 3-positions, of BINOL. Ortho-lithiation at the 3-position directed by the functional groups at the 2-position of BINOL have been extensively used to prepare the 3- and 3,3'-substituted BINOLs. The use of transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation has also been explored to functionalize BINOL at the 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-positions. These regioselective substitutions of BINOL have allowed the construction of tremendous amount of BINOL derivatives with fascinating structures and properties as reviewed in this article. Examples for the applications of the optically active BINOLs with varying substitutions in asymmetric catalysis, molecular recognition, chiral sensing and materials are also provided.

Abstract
Atropisomeric indoles defined by a N─N axis are an important class of heterocycles in synthetic and medicinal chemistry and material sciences. However, they remain heavily underexplored due to limited synthetic methods and challenging stereocontrol over the short N─N bonds. Here, we report highly atroposelective access to N─N axially chiral indoles via the asymmetric Larock reaction. This protocol leveraged the powerful role of chiral phosphoramidite ligand to attenuate the common ligand dissociation in the original Larock reaction, forming N─N chiral indoles with excellent functional group tolerance and high enantioselectivity via palladium-catalyzed intermolecular annulation between readily available o-iodoaniline and alkynes. The multifunctionality in the prepared chiral indoles allowed diverse post-coupling synthetic transformations, affording a broad array of functionalized chiral indoles. Experimental and computational studies have been conducted to explore the reaction mechanism, elucidating the enantio-determining and rate-limiting steps.

Abstract
Coordination chemistry is a powerful method to synthesize supramolecular cages with distinct features that suit specific applications. This work demonstrates the synthesis of discrete, homochiral FeII 2 L3 cages via chirality-driven self-assembly. Specifically, the installation of chirality - at both the vertices and ligand backbones - allows the formation of discrete, homochiral FeII 2 L3 cages of different sizes via stereochemical control of the iron(II) centers. We observed that larger cages require multiple chiral centra (chiral ligands and vertices). In contrast, the formation of smaller cages is stereoselective with solely chiral ligands. The latter cages can also be formed from two chiral subcomponents, but only when they have matching chirality. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of these smaller FeII 2 L3 cages revealed several non-covalent interactions as a driving force for narcissistic chiral self-sorting. This expected behavior was confirmed utilizing the shorter ligands in racemic form, yielding discrete, homochiral FeII 2 L3 cages formed in enantiomeric pairs.

Abstract
A highly efficient Rh-catalyzed hydrogenation of functionalized olefins has been realized by a new family of highly rigid chiral ferrocenylphosphine-spiro phosphonamidite ligands. Excellent enantiocontrol (>99% ee in most cases) was achieved with a wide range of α-dehydroamino acid esters and α-enamides. This practicable catalytic system was further applied in the scalable synthesis of highly optically pure key intermediates of cinacalcet and d-phenylalanine.

Abstract
A strategy for chiral ligand design has been developed that allows for incorporation of an achiral bicyclic bridgehead phosphoramidite to generate a class of hybrid diphosphorus ligands for high activity and asymmetric control. Using this concept, a series of chiral phosphine-phosphoramidite ligands bearing the sole chirality at the ligand backbone have been prepared and successfully employed in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-vinylanilides for the synthesis of optically active anilines bearing an ortho-tertiary benzylic stereocenter.

Abstract
Asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins is one of the most powerful asymmetric transformations in molecular synthesis. Although several privileged catalyst scaffolds are available, the catalyst development for asymmetric hydrogenation is still a time- and resource-consuming process due to the lack of predictive catalyst design strategy. Targeting the data-driven design of asymmetric catalysis, we herein report the development of a standardized database that contains the detailed information of over 12000 literature asymmetric hydrogenations of olefins. This database provides a valuable platform for the machine learning applications in asymmetric catalysis. Based on this database, we developed a hierarchical learning approach to achieve predictive machine leaning model using only dozens of enantioselectivity data with the target olefin, which offers a useful solution for the few-shot learning problem and will facilitate the reaction optimization with new olefin substrate in catalysis screening.

Abstract
A highly diastereo- and enantioselective Ir-catalyzed hydrogenation of unfunctionalized 2,3-disubstituted quinolines, especially 3-alkyl-2-arylquinolines, has been realized. The success of this hydrogenation is ascribed to the use of a structurally fine-tuned chiral phosphine-phosphoramidite ligand with a (Sa)-3,3'-dimethyl H8-naphthyl moiety and (Rc)-1-phenylethylamine backbone. The hydrogenation displayed broad functional group tolerance, thus furnishing a wide range of optically active 2,3-disubstituted tetrahydroquinolines in up to 96% ee and with perfect cis-diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
We present here the synthesis of chiral BINOL-derived (BINOL=1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) bisamine and bispyridine-aldehyde building blocks that can be used for the self-assembly of novel chiral FeII 2 L3 cages when mixed with an iron(II) precursor. The properties of a series of chiral cages were studied by NMR and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, cold-spray ionization MS, and molecular modeling. Upon formation of the M2 L3 cages, the iron corners can adopt various isomeric forms: mer, fac-Δ, or fac-Λ. We found that the coordination geometry around the metal centers in R-Cages 1 and 2 were influenced by the chiral BINOL backbone only to a limited extent, as a mixture of cages was formed with fac and mer configurations at the iron corners. However, single cage species (fac-RR-Cage and fac-RS-Cage) that are enantiopure and highly symmetric were obtained by generating these chiral M2 L3 cages by using the bispyridine-aldehyde building blocks in combination with chiral amine moieties to form pyridylimine ligands for coordination to iron. Next to consistent NMR spectra, the CD spectra confirm the configurations fac-(Λ,Λ) and fac-(Δ,Δ) corresponding to RR- and RS-Cage, respectively.

Abstract
γ,δ-Unsaturated amides in which the alkene moiety bears an aryl or heteroaryl substituent undergo regioselective rhodium-catalyzed δ-borylation by pinacolborane to afford chiral secondary benzylic boronic esters. The results contrast the γ-borylation of γ,δ-unsaturated amides in which the disubstituted alkene moiety bears only alkyl substituents; the reversal in regiochemistry is coupled with a reversal in the sense of π-facial selectivity.

Abstract
In contrast to the plethora of catalytic systems that enable access to any enantiomers of the chiral products by simply choosing between a pair of enantiomeric or pseudoenantiomeric chiral catalysts, few analogously effective protocols exist for the synthesis of compounds bearing multiple stereogenic centers with full control of the absolute and relative stereochemical configurations. Here, we report the application of our previously developed modular phosphoramidite-thioether ligands for the copper-catalyzed diastereodivergent asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides and nitroalkenes. Our catalytic system enables wide substrate scope, great stereochemical control, and high reaction efficiency.

Abstract
![]()
Oxime-directed
catalytic asymmetric hydroboration is diverted to
catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation (CAH) upon the addition of a proton
source, such as MeOH, or by running the reaction under a hydrogen
atmosphere. A borane (e.g., pinacolborane) is required to promote
CAH. Tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenes, including the challenging
all-alkyl tetrasubstituted alkenes, undergo CAH with enantiomer ratios
(er) as high as 99:1. The mild reaction conditions, i.e., ambient
temperature, moderate reaction times, and the need for only a slight
excess of H2, contrast those used in most state-of-the-art
catalysts for related substrates.

Abstract
An effective synthesis of chiral atropoisomeric biaryl phosphine-olefin compounds via palladium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H olefination has been developed for the first time. The reactions are operationally simple, tolerate wide functional groups, and have a good ee value. Notably, P(O)R2 not only acts as the directing group to direct C-H activation in order to make a useful ligand but also serves to facilitate composition of the product in a useful manner in this transformation.

Abstract
Forty years after Venanzi's seminal studies on trans-spanning diphosphines, a cavity-shaped trans chelator (TRANSDIP) has been used to monitor the stepwise formation of a carbon-carbon bond on a palladium centre. Furthermore, the ligand, which incorporates a cyclodextrin subunit, enabled the synthesis of the first η(2)-dioxygen complex in which the M-O(2) unit is entrapped within a cavity.

Abstract
The synthesis of several novel chiral phosphoramidite ligands (L1-L8) with C(2) symmetric, pseudo C(2) symmetric secondary amines and chiral Brønsted acids 1a,b has been achieved. These chiral auxiliaries were obtained from commercially available d-mannitol, and secondary amines in moderate to excellent yields. Excellent diastereoselectivites of ten chiral auxiliaries were obtained. The chiral phosphoramidite ligands and chiral Brønsted acids were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods.
