Abstract
For rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), manganese dioxide is one of the most promising candidates as a cathode material because of its cost effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and high specific capacities. However, the ZIBs suffer from poor rate performance and low cycle life due to the weak intrinsic electronic conductivity of manganese dioxide, poor ion diffusion of lump manganese dioxide, and its volumetric expansion during the cycle. Herein, we prepare MnO2@carbon composites (MnO2@IPHCSs) by in situ growing MnO2 nanoflowers on an interconnected porous hollow carbon spheres (IPHCSs) template. IPHCSs, as excellent conductors, significantly improve the conductivity of the manganese dioxide cathode. The hollow porous carbon framework of IPHCSs can offer more ion diffusion paths to internal MnO2@IPHCS carbon composites and acts as a buffer room to cope with the drastic volume contraction and expansion during charge/discharge cycling. The rate performance tests show that MnO2@IPHCSs with high conductivity have a specific capacity of 147 mA h g-1 at 3 C. MnO2@IPHCSs with hollow and nanoflower structures are shown to have excellent ion diffusion performance (ion diffusion coefficient = 10-11 to 10-10 cm2 s-1) in the electrochemical kinetics of the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique. Long cycle performance testing and in situ Raman characterization reveal that MnO2@IPHCSs have high cycling stability (85.5% capacity retention after 800 cycles) and reversibility due to the enhanced structure and increased conductivity. The excellently conductive manganese dioxide supported by IPHCSs has good rate and cycling performance, which can be used to produce superior-performance ZIBs.

Abstract
A structure-property study across a series of donor-acceptor-donor structures composed of mono- and bi-(1,3,4-oxadiazole) units symmetrically substituted with alkyl functionalized bi-, ter- and quaterthiophene segments is presented. Synthetically tailoring the ratio of electron-withdrawing 1,3,4-oxadiazole to electron-releasing thiophene units and their alkyl grafting pattern permitted us to scrutinize the impact of these structural factors on the redox, absorptive and emissive properties of these push-pull molecules. Contrasting trends of redox potentials were observed, with the oxidation potential closely following the donor-to-acceptor ratio, whereas the reduction potential being tuned independently by either the number of acceptor units or the conjugation length of the donor-acceptor system. Increasing the thiophene unit contribution delivered a shift from blue to green luminescence, while the structural rigidity afforded by intramolecular non-covalent interactions between 1,3,4-oxadiazole and the thiophene moieties has been identified as the prime factor determining the emission efficiency of these molecules. All six structures investigated electro-polymerize easily, yielding electroactive and electrochromic polymers. The polymer doping process is largely influenced by the length of the oligothiophene repeating unit and the alkyl chain grafting density. Polymers with relatively short oligothiophene segments are able to support polarons and polaron-pairs, whereas those with segments longer than six thiophene units could also stabilize diamagnetic charge carries - bipolarons. Increasing the alkyl chain grafting density improved the reversibility and broadened the working potential window of the p-doping process. Stable radical anions have also been investigated, bringing detailed information about the conjugation pattern of these electron-surplus species. This study delivers interesting clues towards the conscious structural design of bespoke frontier energy level oligothiophene functional materials and their polymers by incorporating a structurally matching 1,3,4-oxadiazole unit.

Abstract
Polyfuran films produced by electropolymerization of a series of oligofurans substituted with alkyl groups show improved properties, such as good conductivity and stability, well-defined spectroelectrochemistry and smooth morphology.
Polyfurans have never been established as useful conjugated polymers, as previously they were considered to be inherently unstable and poorly conductive. Here, we show the preparation of stable and conducting polyfuran films by electropolymerization of a series of oligofurans of different chain lengths substituted with alkyl groups. The polyfuran films show good conductivity in the order of 1 S cm–1, good environmental and electrochemical stabilities, very smooth morphologies (roughness 1–5 nm), long effective conjugation lengths, well-defined spectroelectrochemistry and electro-optical switching (in the Vis-NIR region), and have optical band-gaps in the range of 2.2–2.3 eV. A low oxidation potential needed for polymerization of oligofurans (compared to furan) is a key factor in achievement of improved properties of polyfurans reported in this work. DFT calculations and experiments show that polyfurans are much more rigid than polythiophenes, and alkyl substitution does not disturb backbone planarity and conjugation. The obtained properties of polyfuran films are similar or superior to the properties of electrochemically prepared poly(oligothiophene)s under similar conditions.
