Abstract
Bio-inorganic complexes inspired by hydrogenase enzymes are designed to catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A series of new diiron hydrogenase mimic complexes with one or two terminal tris(4-methoxyphenyl)phosphine and different μ-bridging dithiolate ligands and show catalytic activity towards electrochemical proton reduction in the presence of weak and strong acids. A series of propane- and benzene-dithiolato-bridged complexes was synthesized, crystallized, and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and quantum chemical calculations. Their electrochemical properties as well as the detailed reaction mechanisms of the HER are elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) methods. The nature of the μ-bridging dithiolate is critically controlling the reaction and performance of the HER of the complexes. In contrast, terminal phosphine ligands have no significant effects on redox activities and mechanism. Mono- or di-substituted propane-dithiolate complexes afford a sequential reduction (electrochemical; E) and protonation (chemical; C) mechanism (ECEC), while the μ-benzene dithiolate complexes follow a different reaction mechanism and are more efficient HER catalysts.

Abstract
The photoreaction of [(μ-S)2Fe2(CO)6] and alkenes or alkynes has been optimized to readily obtain functionalized [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimics. Irradiation under low CO pressure in THF produces the corresponding photo-adducts in good/acceptable (alkenes/alkynes) yields, with retention of the starting olefin stereochemistry. DFT-calculations provide plausible reaction pathways in both, singlet and triplet states. The DFT-calculation based in the singlet state is energetically more favorable. The electrochemical behavior of the synthesized compounds is also presented, including studies in acidic media. The electrochemical properties of the products vary in the presence of a double bond (cycloaddition of [(μ-S)2Fe2(CO)6] to alkynes), respect to a single bond (cycloaddition to alkenes). The photochemistry of [(μ-S)2Fe2(CO)6] and alkenes or alkynes has been developed to a synthetically useful level. Computational data and electrochemistry of the photoadducts show interesting properties of these compounds.![]()

Abstract
The effect of the nature of the dithiolato ligand on the physical and electrochemical properties of synthetic H-cluster mimics of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase is still of significant concern. In this report we describe the cyclization of various alkanedithiols to afford cyclic disulfide, tetrasulfide, and hexasulfide compounds. The latter compounds were used as proligands for the synthesis of a series of [FeFe]-hydrogenase H-cluster mimics having the general formulas [Fe2(CO)6{μ-S(CH2)nS}] (n = 4-8), [Fe2(CO)6{μ-S(CH2)nS}]2 (n = 6-8), and [Fe2(CO)6{(μ-S(CH2)nS)2}] (n = 6-8). The resulting complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR and IR spectroscopic techniques, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis as well as X-ray analysis. The purpose of this research was to study the influence of the systematic increase of n from 2 to 7 on the redox potentials of the models and the catalytic ability in the presence of acetic acid (AcOH) by applying cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
Experiments are described that probe the stability of N-substituted derivatives of the azadithiolate cofactor recently confirmed in the [FeFe] hydrogenases (Berggren, G., et al. Nature 2013, 499, 66). Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of bis(thioester) BnN(CH2SAc)2 gives [BnNCH2SCH2]2 rather than azadithiol BnN(CH2SH)2. Treatment of BnN(CH2SAc)2 with NaO(t)Bu generates BnN(CH2SNa)2, which was trapped with NiCl2(diphos) (diphos = 1,2-C2H4(PR2)2; R = Ph (dppe) and Cy (dcpe)) to give fully characterized complexes Ni[(SCH2)2NBn](diphos). The related N-aryl derivative Ni[(SCH2)2NC6H4Cl](diphos) was prepared analogously from 4-ClC6H4N(CH2SAc)2, NaO(t)Bu, and NiCl2(dppe). Crystallographic analysis confirmed that these rare nonbridging [adt(R)](2-) complexes feature distorted square planar Ni centers. The analogue Pd[(SCH2)2NBn](dppe) was also prepared. (31)P NMR analysis indicates that Ni[(SCH2)2NBn](dppe) has basicity comparable to typical amines. As shown by cyclic voltammetry, the couple [M[(SCH2)2NBn](dppe)](+/0) is reversible near -2.0 V versus Fc(+/0). The wave shifts to -1.78 V upon N-protonation. In the presence of CF3CO2H, Ni[(SCH2)2NBn](dppe) catalyzes hydrogen evolution at rate of 22 s(-1) in the acid-independent regime, at room temperature in CH2Cl2 solution. In contrast to the instability of RN(CH2SH)2 (R = alkyl, aryl), the dithiol of tosylamide TsN(CH2SH)2 proved sufficiently stable to allow full characterization. This dithiol reacts with Fe3(CO)12 and, in the presence of base, NiCl2(dppe) to give Fe2[(SCH2)2NTs](CO)6 and Ni[(SCH2)2NTs](dppe), respectively.

Abstract
A dinuclear synthetic model of the [NiFeSe] hydrogenase active site and a structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical analysis of this complex is reported. [NiFe(‘S2Se2’)(CO)3] (H2‘S2Se2’=1,2-bis(2-thiabutyl-3,3-dimethyl-4-selenol)benzene) has been synthesized by reacting the nickel selenolate complex [Ni(‘S2Se2’)] with [Fe(CO)3bda] (bda=benzylideneacetone). X-ray crystal structure analysis confirms that [NiFe(‘S2Se2’)(CO)3] mimics the key structural features of the enzyme active site, including a doubly bridged heterobimetallic nickel and iron center with a selenolate terminally coordinated to the nickel center. Comparison of [NiFe(‘S2Se2’)(CO)3] with the previously reported thiolate analogue [NiFe(‘S4’)(CO)3] (H2‘S4’=H2xbsms=1,2-bis(4-mercapto-3,3-dimethyl-2-thiabutyl)benzene) showed that the selenolate groups in [NiFe(‘S2Se2’)(CO)3] give lower carbonyl stretching frequencies in the IR spectrum. Electrochemical studies of [NiFe(‘S2Se2’)(CO)3] and [NiFe(‘S4’)(CO)3] demonstrated that both complexes do not operate as homogenous H2 evolution catalysts, but are precursors to a solid deposit on an electrode surface for H2 evolution catalysis in organic and aqueous solution.

Abstract
This study explores the site specificity (sulfur vs the Fe-Fe bond) of oxygenation of diiron (Fe(I)Fe(I) and Fe(II)Fe(II)) organometallics that model the 2-iron subsite in the active site of [FeFe]-hydrogenase: (mu-pdt)[Fe(CO)(2)L][Fe(CO)(2)L'] (L = L' = CO (1); L = PPh(3), L' = CO (2); L = L' = PMe(3) (4)) and (mu-pdt)(mu-H)[Fe(CO)(2)PMe(3)](2) (5). DFT computations find that the Fe-Fe bond in the Fe(I)Fe(I) diiron models is thermodynamically favored to produce the mu-oxo or oxidative addition product, Fe(II)-O-Fe(II); nevertheless, the sulfur-based HOMO-1 accounts for the experimentally observed mono- and bis-O-atom adducts at sulfur, i.e., (mu-pst)[Fe(CO)(2)L][Fe(CO)(2)L'] (pst = -S(CH(2))(3)S(O)-, 1,3-propanesulfenatothiolate; L = L' = CO (1-O); L = PPh(3), L' = CO (2-O); L = L' = PMe(3) (4-O)) and (mu-pds)[Fe(CO)(2)L][Fe(CO)(2)L'] (pds = -(O)S(CH(2))(3)S(O)-, 1,3-propanedisulfenato; L = PPh(3), L' = CO (2-O(2))). The Fe(II)(mu-H)Fe(II) diiron model (5), for which the HOMO is largely of sulfur character, exclusively yields S-oxygenation. The depressing effect of such bridging ligand modification on the dynamic NMR properties arising from rotation of the Fe(CO)(3) correlates with higher barriers to the CO/PMe(3) exchange of (mu-pst)[Fe(CO)(3)](2) as compared to (mu-pdt)[Fe(CO)(3)](2). Five molecular structures are confirmed by X-ray diffraction: 1-O, 2-O, 2-O(2), 4-O, and 6. Deoxygenation with reclamation of the mu-pdt parent complex occurs in a proton/electron-coupled process. The possible biological relevance of oxygenation and deoxygenation studies is discussed.
