Abstract
Chiral atomically precise metal clusters, known for their remarkable chiroptical properties, hold great potential for applications in chirality recognition. However, advancements in this field have been constrained by the limited exploration of host-guest chemistry, involving metal clusters. This study reports the synthesis of a chiral Cu16(C2B10H10S2)8 (denoted as Cu16@CB8, where C2B10H12S2H2 = 9,12-(HS)2-1,2-closo-carborane) cluster by an achiral carboranylthiolate ligand. The chiral R-/S-Cu16@CB8 cluster features chiral cavities reminiscent of cyclodextrins, which are surrounded by carborane clusters, yet they crystallize in a racemate. These cyclodextrin-like cavities demonstrated the specific recognition of amino acids, as indicated by the responsive output of circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals of Cu16 moieties of the Cu16@CB8 cluster. Notably, a quantitative chiroptical analysis of amino acids in a short time and a concomitant deracemization of Cu16@CB8 were achieved. Density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics simulation and noncovalent interaction analysis further unraveled the great importance of the cavities and binding sites for chiral recognition. Dipeptide, tripeptide, and polypeptide containing the corresponding amino acids (Cys, Arg, or His residues) display the same chiral recognition, showing the generality of this approach. The functional synergy of dual clusters, comprising carborane and metal clusters, is for the first time demonstrated in the Cu16@CB8 cluster, resulting in the valuable quantification of the enantiomeric excess (ee) value of amino acids. This work opens a new avenue for chirality sensors based on chiral metal clusters with unique chiroptical properties and inspires the development of carborane clusters in host-guest chemistry.

Abstract
Cocrystals containing distinct atom-precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) provide an opportunity to elucidate the crystallization process, architectural complexity, and newly emerging properties of condensed-state metal NC-assembled materials. However, the controllable preparation of such cocrystals is still challenging. Herein, we present a modular strategy to cocrystallize two customized carboranylthiolate-protected copper NCs, Cu14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)6 (Cu14) and Cu16(C2B10H10S2)8 (Cu16), which adopt matched surface patterns by host-guest chemistry. The Cu14·Cu16 cocrystals show integrated UV-vis adsorption and dual emission stemming from the Cu14 and Cu16 NCs. Moreover, the component NCs are selectively doped by gold atoms, which is a promising way to incorporate diverse properties of metal cluster-based cocrystals. This work not only provides a copper NC-based cocrystal for a profound study on a condensed-state copper nanomaterial but also develops a modular strategy for the cocrystallization of metal NCs.

Abstract
Racemic carborane-based bisphosphanes were obtained by dismutation reactions between a carborane-based diphosphetane and diaryl dichalogenides. NMR spectroscopic and theoretical studies revealed a two-step mechanism explaining the high stereoselectivity of these reactions. The coordination chemistry of the multidentate P,N ligands 6c and 6d in copper(I) and silver(I) complexes was studied. While 6d acted exclusively as tetradentate ligand, 6c showed either tridentate or tetradentate coordination depending on the metal and the counterion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION After decades of development, the medicinal chemistry of compounds that contain a single boron atom has matured to the present status of having equal rights with other branches of drug discovery, although it remains a relative newcomer. In contrast, the medicinal chemistry of boron clusters is less advanced, but it is expanding and may soon become a productive area of drug discovery. AREAS COVERED The author reviews the current developments of medicinal chemistry of boron and its applications in drug design. First generation boron drugs that bear a single boron atom and second generation boron drugs that utilize boron clusters as pharmacophores or modulators of bioactive molecules are discussed. The advantages and gaps in our current understanding of boron medicinal chemistry, with a special focus on boron clusters, are highlighted. EXPERT OPINION Boron is not a panacea for every drug discovery problem, but there is a good chance that it will become a useful addition to the medicinal chemistry tool box. The present status of boron resembles the medicinal chemistry status of fluorine three decades ago; indeed, currently, approximately 20% of pharmaceuticals on the market contain fluorine. The fact that novel boron compounds, especially those based on abiotic polyhedral boron hydrides, are currently unfamiliar could be advantageous because organisms may be less prone to developing resistance against boron cluster-based drugs.

Abstract
Charge-compensated nido-carboranyl thioether ligands [7-MeS-10-Me2S-7,8-C2B9H10] and [7,8-(MeS)2-10-Me2S-7,8-C2B9H9] were prepared and fully characterized. They readily react with labile tungsten carbonyls to give σ-complexes - mono-substituted (CO)5W[7-MeS-10-Me2S-7,8-C2B9H10-κ(1)-S(1)] and (CO)5W[7,8-(MeS)2-10-Me2S-7,8-C2B9H9-κ(1)-S(1)] and chelate (CO)4W[7,8-(MeS)2-10-Me2S-7,8-C2B9H9-κ(2)-S(1),S(2)]. The synthesized metallocomplexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The donor ability of the 7-methylsulfide-nido-carborane ligand is not sensitive to introduction of the charge-compensating dimethylsulfonium group.

Abstract
A set of neutral and anionic carborane derivatives in which the styrenyl fragment is introduced as a fluorophore group has been successfully synthesized and characterized. The reaction of the monolithium salts of 1-Ph-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(11), 1-Me-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(11) and 1,2-C(2)B(10)H(12) with one equivalent of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride leads to the formation of compounds 1-3, whereas the reaction of the dilithium salt of 1,2-C(2)B(10)H(12) with two equivalents of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride gives disubstituted compound 4. The closo clusters were degraded using the classical method, KOH in EtOH, to afford the corresponding nido species, which were isolated as tetramethylammonium salts. The crystal structure of the four closo compounds 1-4 were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. All compounds, except 1, display emission properties, with quantum yields dependent on the nature of the cluster (closo or nido) and the substituent on the second C(cluster) atom. In general, closo compounds 2-4 exhibit high fluorescence emission, whereas the presence of a nido cluster produces a decrease of the emission intensity. The presence of a phenyl group bonded to the C(cluster) results in an excellent electron-acceptor unit that produces a quenching of the fluorescence. DFT calculations have confirmed the charge-separation state in 1 to explain the quenching of the fluorescence and the key role of the carboranyl fragment in this luminescent process.

A new family of photoluminescent neutral and anionic di-carboranyl and tetra-carboranyl derivatives have been synthesized and characterized. The reaction of α,α'-bis(3,5-bis(bromomethyl)phenoxy-m-xylene with 4 equiv. of the monolithium salt of 1-Ph-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(11) or 1-Me-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(11) gives the neutral tetracarboranyl-functionalized aryl ether derivatives closo-1 and closo-2, respectively. The addition of the monolithium salt of 1-Ph-1,2-closo-C(2)B(10)H(11) to α,α,'-dibromo-m-xylene or 2,6-dibromomethyl-pyridine gives the corresponding di-carboranyl derivatives closo-3 and closo-4. These compounds, which contain four or two closo clusters, were degraded using the classical method, KOH in EtOH, affording the corresponding nido species, which were isolated as potassium or tetramethylammonium salts. All the compounds were characterized by IR, (1)H, (11)B and (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and the crystal structure of closo-3 was analysed by X-ray diffraction. The carboranyl fragments are bonded through CH(2) units to different organic moieties, and their influence on the photoluminescent properties of the final molecules has been studied. All the closo- and nido-carborane derivatives exhibit a blue emission under ultraviolet excitation at room temperature in different solvents. The fluorescence properties of these closo and nido-derivatives depend on the substituent (Ph or Me) bonded to the C(cluster), the solvent polarity, and the organic unit bearing the carborane clusters (benzene or pyridine). In the case of nido-derivatives, an important effect of the cation is also observed.

Abstract
The synthesis of three endofunctionalized two-dimensional supramolecular metallacycles including two [2 + 2] rhomboids (5 and 6) and a [3 + 3] hexagon (7) is reported. The resulting self-assembled supramolecular structures, containing several nitrobenzyl moieties at their interior surface, have been fully characterized by multinuclear NMR ((31)P and (1)H) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. A significant C-H...O hydrogen bonding between the nitrobenzyl acceptor and the edge molecules of the supramolecular architecture is observed in the small rhomboid 5 and this interaction gradually decreases upon the enlargement of the resulting polygonal structures from a small rhomboid 5 through a large rhomboid 6 to a hexagon 7. Molecular modeling with the MMFF force field gives a possible conformation of each self-assembly in different solvents and shows that the hydrophilic nitrobenzyl moiety prefers to be buried in the cavity of the resulting polygonal structures in nonpolar solvents, thus forming hydrogen bonds with the peripheral component building units.
