Electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(i) atoms in dithiocarbamate metal complexes

The nature of metals in the isostructural series of dithiocarbamate complexes affects the electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(i) leading to either semicoordination, or halogen bonding.

The Binary Iodine-Chlorine Octahalide Series [In Cl8-n ]2- (n=3, 3.6, 4)

The octanuclear iodine-chlorine interhalides [I₄ Cl₄ ]^2- and [I₃ Cl₅ ]^2- were prepared in two steps. Firstly, addition of ICl to the triaminocyclopropenium chloride salt [C₃ (NEt₂ )₃ ]Cl forms the trihalide ICl₂ ^- salt, secondly, addition of half an equivalent of I₂ or ICl, respectively, gave the desired products upon crystallization at low temperature. The non-stoichiometric octahalide [I_3.6 Cl_4.4 ]^2- was obtained after heating a CH₂ Cl₂ solution of the ICl₂ ^- salt to reflux for 2 hours followed crystallization. [I₄ Cl₄ ]^2- is best described as two ICl₂ ^- anions bridged by I₂ , whereas [I₃ Cl₅ ]^2- is best described as an [I₂ Cl₃ ]^- pentahalide with a weak halogen bond to an ICl₂ ^- trihalide. The octahalides were characterized by X-ray crystallography, computational studies, Raman and Far-IR spectroscopies, as well as by TGA and melting point.

N-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)acetamide against diiodine towards polyiodide dianion

N-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)acetamide decreases the total amount of diiodine which is available for the iodination of tyrosil residues of thyroglobulin, while it inhibits the activity of thyroid peroxidase.

A Halogen-Bonded Dimeric Resorcinarene Capsule

Iodine (I2) acts as a bifunctional halogen-bond donor connecting two macrocyclic molecules of the bowl-shaped halogen-bond acceptor, N-cyclohexyl ammonium resorcinarene chloride 1, to form the dimeric capsule [(1,4-dioxane)3@1(2)(I2)2]. The dimeric capsule is constructed solely through halogen bonds and has a single cavity (V=511 Å(3)) large enough to encapsulate three 1,4-dioxane guest molecules.

Preparation and antimicrobial properties of gemini surfactant-supported triiodide complex system

Iodine is an effective, simple, and inexpensive bactericide in disinfection. However, the poor solubility and stability of iodine in water limit its applications. In addition, the active iodine content in the commercial iodophors is quite low, and the reported triiodide complex is unstable. In this work, a long-term stable triiodide complex antimicrobial system was prepared by mixing iodine and a cationic gemini surfactant into lauryldimethylamine oxide (LDAO) aqueous solution, and its stability was examined by means of UV-vis spectrophotometry. It was found that the content of LDAO, cationic gemini surfactant and H(2)SO(4) played crucial roles in stabilizing antimicrobial system, and the active iodine (i.e., triiodide complex) content of the optimum formulation can remain stable for 150 days, as iodine is encapsulated by the mixed vesicles assembled by the protonated LDAO and the added gemini surfactant. However, the active iodine reduced rapidly when NaCl was added or the pH was increased in the environment. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficacy of the optimized formulation was studied against Candida albicans, and more than 4 log reduction in viable cell after 5 min of contact was obtained.
