On the halide aggregation into the [Au4(PPh3)4]4+ cluster core. Insights from structural, optical and interaction energy analysis in [(Ph3PAu)4X2]2+ and [(Ph3PAu)4X]3+ species (X = Cl-, Br-, I-)

The aggregation of halide atoms into gold clusters offers an interesting scenario for the development of novel metal-based cavities for anion recognition and sensing applications. Thus, further understanding of the different contributing terms leading to efficient cluster-halide aggregation is relevant to guide their synthetic design. In this report, we evaluate the formation of [(Ph3PAu)4X2]2+ and [(Ph3PAu)4X]3+ species (X = Cl-, Br-, I-) in terms of different energy contributions underlying the stabilization of the cluster-halide interaction, and the expected UV-vis absorption profiles as a result of the variation in frontier orbital arrangements. Our results denote that a non-planar Au4 core shape enables enhanced halide aggregation, which is similar for Cl-, Br-, and I-, in comparison to the hypothetical planar Au4 counterparts. The electrostatic nature of the interaction involves a decreasing ion-dipole term along with the series, and for iodine species, higher-order electrostatic contributions become more relevant. Hence, the obtained results help in gaining further understanding of the different stabilizing and destabilizing contributions to suitable cluster-based cavities for the incorporation of different monoatomic anions.

Rational and controllable syntheses of variants of modified N-confused N-fused porphodimethenes and a porphotrimethene with adaptive properties

Retrosynthetic design and synthesis with structural isolation of two unprecedented core modified N-confused N-fused porphodimethene-like porphyrinoids possessing a [5.5.5.5] tetracyclic ring with tunable photophysical properties is reported. The solid-state X-ray crystal structure reveals the expected cis geometry for the meso-sp3 carbons. Controlled chemical oxidation of the porphodimethene analogue 11 bearing the N-confused pyrrole moiety to the corresponding porphotrimethene 12 has been achieved in quantitative yield, while 10 bearing the N-methyl N-confused pyrrole moiety remained unsusceptible to chemical oxidation. All three S2N3 hybrid N-confused N-fused porphodi(tri)methene-like porphyrinoids 10-12 could recognize the fluoride anion with high selectivity; however, porphodimethene 10 and porphotrimethene 12 do so via deprotonation rather than an anion recognition based mechanism as has been anticipated in the case of porphodimethene 11.

Constructing artificial gap junctions to mediate intercellular signal and mass transport

Natural gap junctions are a type of channel protein responsible for intercellular signalling and mass communication. However, the scope of applications for these proteins is limited as they cannot be prepared at a large scale and are unable to spontaneously insert into cell membranes in vitro. The construction of artificial gap junctions may provide an alternative strategy for preparing analogues of the natural proteins and bottom-up building blocks necessary for the synthesis of artificial cells. Here we show the construction of artificial gap junction channels from unimolecular tubular molecules consisting of alternately arranged positively and negatively charged pillar[5]arene motifs. These molecules feature a hydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic triblock structure that allows them to efficiently insert into two adjacent plasma membranes and stretch across the gap between the two membranes to form gap junctions. Similar to natural gap junction channels, the synthetic channels could mediate intercellular signal coupling and reactive oxygen species transmission, leading to cellular activity.

In this work, a novel organic receptor, CPI [(E)-3-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)acrylonitrile], was rationally designed and successfully fabricated for selective and sole recognition of CN- ions over other competitive anions through an obvious chromogenic and ratiometric emission change in DMSO. The distinct and prominent color change upon the addition of CN- can be attributed to the typical ICT process, which is induced by the deprotonation of acidic NH protons in the imidazole moiety. The sensor displayed strong solvatochromic effects in commonly used organic solvents such as n-hexane, toluene, diethyl ether, DCM, THF, DMF and DMSO. The chemical structure of the sensor was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, IR and mass spectroscopy. Significantly, the probe can function as a fluorescence-based sensor for the efficient detection of low-level water in organic solvents. The solid-state emission properties of CPI were successfully applied to recognise cyanide in a solid-state platform with naked eye-visualized distinct color change. The probe can be made reusable by adding TFA into the CN- treated probe solution. The detection limit of CPI towards CN- was determined to be 4.48 × 10-8 M. More importantly, the sensor is capable of detecting CN- in food samples and has been employed for wastewater treatment. Besides, easy-to-prepare CPI-coated test strips provide a simple, reusable and easy-to-handle protocol for the qualitative identification of CN- conveniently. Finally, density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory were performed to verify the experimental outcomes theoretically.

Anion-Binding Properties of Aliphatic Symmetric Squaramide Receptors

Squaramides (SQs), which are very popular for their H-bonding ability, have attracted great interest due to their wide range of applications such as asymmetric synthesis, pharmacology, and anion transportation. In this study, aliphatic symmetric SQs based on cis/trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DACH) substituted with cyclic tertiary amines, synthesized in four steps under simple reaction conditions, were investigated for the first time for their ability to bind Cl-, Br-, and I- anions. The changes in cis/trans geometric isomers and the cyclic ring (pyrrolidine vs piperidine) were found to have a combined effect on the degree of anion binding. The spectroscopic titrations of the SQs with TBA-Cl, TBA-Br, and TBA-I in the range of 0.2 to 20.0 equiv were monitored by 1H NMR, and the analyses of the magnitude of chemical shift differences in the NH peaks of the SQs in course of titration were performed by DynaFit and BindFit programs for the calculation of their Ka values. All symmetric SQs I-IV were found to selectively bind Cl- anion more strongly than Br- anion to varying degrees depending on the SQ derivatives. Especially, SQ IV, which has a symmetric trans-DACH and a pyrrolidine ring, was found to have the highest Cl- anion-binding ability compared to the other SQs. However, the SQs did not show any change in the chemical shift of the NH proton in 1H NMR upon successive addition of TBA-I, indicating that they do not interact with I- anion. The stoichiometries of the complexation behavior of SQs I-IV toward Cl- and Br- anions were also analyzed by Job plots.

Anion Recognition in Solution: Insights from Thermodynamics and Ultrafast Structural Dynamics

Anion recognition through noncovalent interactions stands as an emerging field in supramolecular chemistry, exerting a profound influence on the regulation of biological functions. Herein, the thermodynamics of complexation between sodium cyanate (NaOCN) and calix[4]pyrrole was systematically investigated by linear and nonlinear IR spectroscopy, highlighting enthalpy changes as the dominant driving force. The overall orientational relaxation of bound anion can be described by an Arrhenius-type activated process, yielding an activation energy of 15.0 ± 1.0 kJ mol-1. The structural dynamics of contact ion pairs (CIPs) formed between Na+ and OCN- in solution showed a negligible temperature effect, suggesting entropy changes as the principal governing factor. Further analysis revealed that anion recognition in solution is mediated by conformational changes of the receptor and collective rearrangement of hydrogen bond dynamics. This study, framed within the paradigms of thermodynamics and ultrafast structural dynamics, substantially advances our comprehension of the microscopic mechanisms underlying anion recognition in the realm of supramolecular chemistry.

Diphenylpyrrole-Strapped Calix[4]pyrrole Extractant for the Fluoride and Chloride Anions

The anion binding features of diphenylpyrrole-strapped calix[4]pyrrole 1 have been investigated by means of 1 H NMR spectroscopy and ITC (isothermal titration calorimetry), as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Receptor 1 bearing an auxiliary pyrrolic NH donor and solubilizing phenyl groups on the strap was found to bind F- , Cl- , and Br- as their tetrabutylammonium salts with high affinity in DMSO-d6 . In addition, receptor 1 was found to extract the fluoride anion (as both its tetraethylammonium (TEA+ ) and tetrabutylammonium (TBA+ ) salts), as well as the chloride anion into chloroform-d from an aqueous source phase. Cation metathesis using TBAI or the use of a dual host approach involving crown ethers enabled receptor 1 to extract simple alkali metal fluoride or chloride salts from water. Quantitative binding of NaF by receptor 1 was observed in 20 % D2 O-DMSO-d6 allowing for the direct determination of the NaF concentration in an unknown sample.

A portable and intelligent logic detector for simultaneous and in-situ detection of Al3+ and fluoride in groundwater

To develop a convenient and intelligent detector for simultaneous and in-situ detection of Al³⁺ and F^- in groundwater, a novel organic probe called RBP has been prepared. With the increase of Al³⁺, RBP showed a significant fluorescence enhancement at 588 nm, and the detection limit was 0.130 mg/L. After combining with fluorescent internal standard CDs, the fluorescence of RBP-Al-CDs at 588 nm was quenched due to the replace of F^- for Al³⁺, while the CDs at 460 nm remained unchanged, and the detection limit was 0.0186 mg/L. For convenient and intelligent detection, an RBP-based logic detector has been developed for simultaneous detection of Al³⁺ and F^-. Within the ultra-trace, low concentration, and high concentration range of Al³⁺ and F^-, the logic detector can achieve rapid feedback on their concentration levels ("U", "L" and "H") through different output modes of the signal lamps. The development of logical detector is of great significance for studying the in-situ chemical behavior of Al³⁺ and F^- and for daily household detection.

Pyrene-Containing Polyamines as Fluorescent Receptors for Recognition of PFOA in Aqueous Media

The globally widespread perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a concerning environmental contaminant, with a possible toxic long-term effects on the environment and human health The development of sensible, rapid, and low-cost detection systems is a current change in modern environmental chemistry. In this context, two triamine-based chemosensors, L1 and L2, containing a fluorescent pyrene unit, and their Zn(II) complexes are proposed as fluorescent probes for the detection of PFOA in aqueous media. Binding studies carried out by means of fluorescence and NMR titrations highlight that protonated forms of the receptors can interact with the carboxylate group of PFOA, thanks to salt bridge formation with the ammonium groups of the aliphatic chain. This interaction induces a decrease in the fluorescence emission of pyrene at neutral and slightly acidic pH values. Similarly, emission quenching has also been observed upon coordination of PFOA by the Zn(II) complexes of the receptors. These results evidence that simple polyamine-based molecular receptors can be employed for the optical recognition of harmful pollutant molecules, such as PFOA, in aqueous media.

An anomalous anion transfer order in graphene oxide membranes induced by anion-π interactions

Selective transport of anions across membranes has become an important goal in chemistry and biology. Here, we found an anomalous anion transfer order within the graphene oxide membrane: Cl^- > Br^- > F^- > I^-. This is at odds with the conventional ranking of the transfer order, which usually decreases as the radii of the anions increase, i.e., F^- > Cl^- > Br^- > I^-. The abnormal transportation of F^- can be ascribed to the strong anion-π interactions between F^- and graphene oxide sheets. Such unexpectedly strong anion-π interaction resulted in the lower movement of F^- in the graphene oxide membrane and caused the anomalous anion transfer order. Our findings not only provide experimental evidence of anion-π interactions, but also improve our understanding of anion-π interactions in the selective transport of anions across a two-dimensional membrane.

Fertilizer-Holding Performance of Graphene on Soil Colloids Based on Double Electric Layer Theory

Soil nutrient loss, which leads to low plant utilization, has become an urgent issue. Graphene can improve soil fertilizer-holding properties given its small size effect, strong adsorption properties, and large specific surface area. Herein, different amounts of graphene were added to soil samples to study its effect on soil nutrient retention and growth of pepper seedlings. The colloidal double electric layer theory forms the basis for an analysis of variations in soil nutrient concentration through measurements of the zeta potential, which is affected by variations in ion concentrations in soil colloids. We measured the zeta potential of graphene and soil mixed colloids and found that graphene could increase the concentration of nutrient ions in soil colloids. In addition, graphene reduced the loss of nutrients; increased the contents of ammonium nitrogen, effective phosphorus, and fast-acting potassium in the soil after leaching; and enhanced the stability of soil aggregates after leaching. In addition, pepper seedlings grown under graphene treatment for 60 days outperformed seedlings grown without graphene treatment, in terms of plant height and nutrient content. This study demonstrates that the addition of graphene to soil can reduce nutrient loss and promote fertility and plant growth.

Cyclo[2]carbazole[2]pyrrole: a preorganized calix[4]pyrrole analogue

A cyclo[2]carbazole[2]pyrrole (2) consisting of two carbazoles and two pyrroles has been synthesized by directly linking the carbazole 1- and 8-carbon atoms to the pyrrole α-carbon atoms. Macrocycle 2 is an extensively conjugated 16-membered macrocyclic ring that is fixed in a pseudo-1,3-alternate conformation. This provides a preorganized anion binding site consisting of two pyrrole subunits. ¹H NMR spectroscopic analysis revealed that only the two diagonally opposed pyrrole NH protons, as opposed to the carbazole protons, take part in anion binding. Nevertheless, cyclo[2]carbazole[2]pyrrole 2 binds representative anions with higher affinity in CD₂Cl₂ than calix[4]pyrrole (1), a well-studied non-conjugated tetrapyrrole macrocycle that binds anions via four pyrrolic NH hydrogen bond interactions. On the basis of computational studies, the higher chloride anion affinity of receptor 2 relative to 1 is rationalized in terms of a larger binding energy and a lower host strain energy associated with anion complexation. In the presence of excess fluoride or bicarbonate anions, compound 2 loses two pyrrolic NH protons to produce a stable dianionic macrocycle [2-2H]^2- displaying a quenched fluorescence.

Development and Application of Ruthenium(II) and Iridium(III) Based Complexes for Anion Sensing

Improvements in the design of receptors for the detection and quantification of anions are desirable and ongoing in the field of anion chemistry, and remarkable progress has been made in this direction. In this regard, the development of luminescent chemosensors for sensing anions is an imperative and demanding sub-area in supramolecular chemistry. This decade, in particular, witnessed advancements in chemosensors based on ruthenium and iridium complexes for anion sensing by virtue of their modular synthesis and rich chemical and photophysical properties, such as visible excitation wavelength, high quantum efficiency, high luminescence intensity, long lifetimes of phosphorescence, and large Stokes shifts, etc. Thus, this review aims to summarize the recent advances in the development of ruthenium(II) and iridium(III)-based complexes for their application as luminescent chemosensors for anion sensing. In addition, the focus was devoted to designing aspects of polypyridyl complexes of these two transition metals with different recognition motifs, which upon interacting with different inorganic anions, produces desirable quantifiable outputs.

Selective Recognition and Reversible “Turn-Off” Fluorescence Sensing of Acetate (CH3COO−) Anion at Ppb Level Using a Simple Quinizarin Fluorescent Dye

A simple and cost-effective optical sensing system based on quinizarin fluorescent dye (QZ) for the selective and reversible sensing of CH3COO− anions is reported. The anion binding affinity of QZ towards different anions was monitored using electronic absorption and fluorescence emission titration studies in DMSO. The UV-visible absorption spectrum of QZ showed a decrease in the intensity of the characteristic absorption peaks at λ = 280, 323, and 475 nm, while a new peak appeared at λ = 586 nm after the addition of CH3COO− anions. Similarly, the initial strong emission intensity of QZ was attenuated following titration with CH3COO− anions. Notably, similar titration using other anions, such as F−, Cl−, I−, NO3−, NO2−, and H2PO4-, caused no observable changes in both absorption and emission spectra. The selective sensing of CH3COO− anions was also reflected by a sharp visual color change from bright green to faint green under room light. Further, the binding was found to be reversible, and this makes QZ a potential optical and colorimetric sensor for selective, reversible, and ppb-level detection of CH3COO− anions in a DMSO medium.

Triarylborane-triphenylamine based luminophore for the mitochondria targeted live cell imaging and colorimetric detection of aqueous fluoride

Bioimaging of subcellular organelles such as mitochondria is crucial for detecting physiological abnormalities induced by fluctuations in the levels of various analytes. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two novel water-soluble cationic Lewis acid triarylborane-triarylamine conjugates 1 and 2. The optical characteristics of 1 and 2 and their precursor compounds BTPA-NMe2 and BTPA-2NMe2 were evaluated, which show similar absorption and fluorescence spectra, with 1 and 2 exhibiting higher quantum yields of 0.73 and 0.64, respectively, than those of the precursors BTPA-NMe2 and BTPA-2NMe2, indicating the partial disruption of the ICT process and the activation of alternative emission bands in 1 and 2. The live cell imaging ability of compound 2 was examined in HeLa cells using a confocal microscope. Moreover, mitochondrial internalisation using compound 2 was effective and it was found to have high photostability under UV light conditions. Furthermore, compound 2 demonstrated an evident colorimetric response with a colour change to dark yellow in aqueous environments, indicating that it could be used for anion sensing. The spectral changes were observed in UV-visible and fluorescence titration experiments, which were strongly supported by DFT calculations. In short, compound 2 synthesized by us can be exclusively utilized for the selective localization of mitochondria with less cytotoxicity and shows excellent colorimetric response to aqueous inorganic fluoride at levels as low as 0.1 ppm with high selectivity.

Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Molecular Capsule: Dihydrogen Phosphate-Promoted 1:2 Fluoride Anion Complexation

A molecular capsule (1) consisting of two calix[4]pyrroles connected via ethylene diamide linkers has been prepared as an anion receptor. ¹H NMR spectroscopic studies carried out in CD₂Cl₂ revealed that receptor 1 recognizes a variety of anions with different binding modes and stoichiometries. For instance, receptor 1 binds fluoride and acetate with 1:2 receptor/anion stoichiometry and other test anions with 1:1 stoichiometry in solution when their respective tetrabutylammonium (TBA⁺) salts were used. In contrast, with tetraethylammnium (TEA⁺) salts, receptor 1 forms 1:2 complexes with chloride and bromide in addition to fluoride, overcoming expected Columbic repulsions between the anions co-bound in close proximity. Receptor 1 is also able to bind oxoanions, such as oxalate (C₂O₄^2-), dihydrogen phosphate (H₂PO₄^-), sulfate (SO₄^2-), and hydrogen pyrophosphate (HP₂O₇^3-), in the form of 1:1 complexes as the result of presumed cooperation between the two calix[4]pyrrole subunits. The selectivity of receptor 1 for fluoride versus dihydrogen phosphate varies depending on their relative concentrations. For instance, in the presence of less than 1.0 equiv of an equimolar mixture of fluoride and dihydrogen phosphate, receptor 1 shows high selectivity for dihydrogen phosphate. In contrast, in the presence of ≥2.0 anion equiv, receptor 1 binds fluoride preferentially, forming a 1:2 complex. Moreover, when treated with F^-, the preformed 1:1 H₂PO₄^- complex of receptor 1 is converted to the corresponding 1:2 receptor/fluoride complex with the release of the prebound dihydrogen phosphate anion. As inferred from gas-phase computations, this seemingly counterintuitive behavior is rationalized in terms of the precomplexed dihydrogen phosphate serving to reduce the reorganization energy required to bind two fluoride anions. The presence of a water molecule in addition to the bound fluoride anions may also favor the formation of the 1:2 F^- complex. The present study provides a new approach for fine-tuning the binding selectivity of polytopic anion receptors.

DFT study of common anions adsorption at graphene surface due to anion-π interaction

Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we researched the different anions adsorption on the graphene and found that anions can be stably adsorbed on the graphene surface due to the anion-π interaction. The adsorption energy decreased as the order of HPO₄^2- > SO₄^2- > F^- > CH₃COO^- > ClO₃^- > NO₃^- > ClO₄^- > SCN^- > Cl^- > Br^-. The adsorption energy markedly increased as the valence of anion increased from negative monovalence (< -20 kcal/mol) to negative bivalence (> -40 kcal/mol). The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) showed that anion-π interaction is mainly induced by orbital effect. This work provides new insights for understanding Hofmeister effect at graphene interface from the molecular level and indicates that the anion-π interaction cannot be ignored at the interface, especially for the substrate with π-electron-rich carbon-based nanomaterials.

Substituent effects in π-hole regium bonding interactions between Au(p-X-Py)2 complexes and Lewis bases: an ab initio study

For the first time, long range substituent effects in regium bonding interactions involving Au(I) linear complexes are investigated. The Au(I) atom is coordinated to two para -substituted pyridine ligands. The interaction energy (RI-MP2/def2-TZVP level of theory) of the π-hole regium bonding assemblies is affected by the pyridine substitution. The Hammett's plot representations for several sets of Lewis bases have been carried out and, in all cases, good regression plots have been obtained (interaction energies vs. Hammett's σ parameter). The Bader's theory of "atoms-in-molecules" has been used to evidence that the electron density computed at the bond critical point that connects the Au-atom to the electron donor can be used as a measure of bond order in regium bonding. Several X-ray structures retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) provide some experimental support to the existence of regium π-hole bonding in [Au(Py) 2 ] + derivatives.

N-Naphthoyl Thiourea Derivatives: An Efficient Ultrasonic-Assisted Synthesis, Reaction, and In Vitro Anticancer Evaluations

This work demonstrates the optimization of an efficient, mild, and environmentally friendly synthetic approach to access a diverse library of N-naphthoyl thioureas. These derivatives could be exploited as precursor scaffolds for designing valuable heterocycles with anticipated biological activities. Additionally, the utilization of a copper complex derived from the newly synthesized N-naphthoyl thiourea ligand in the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) dye was explored. The antiproliferative effect of the synthesized derivatives was examined against MCF-7, HCT116, and A549 cancer cell lines. Most of the assembled derivatives revealed a significant cytotoxic effect, in some cases, greater than doxorubicin. Of these, the copper complex demonstrated significant antitumor activities (IC₅₀ < 1.3 μM) and lesser cytotoxic impact (IC₅₀ > 76 μM), indicating its possibility as a pioneering candidate for future carcinogenic pharmaceutics. Relations between the structure and activity also have been addressed.

Nature of hydride and halide encapsulation in Ag8 cages: insights from the structure and interaction energy of [Ag8(X){S2P(OiPr)2}6]+ (X = H-, F-, Cl-, Br-, I-) from relativistic DFT calculations

Unraveling the different contributing terms to an efficient anion encapsulation is a relevant issue for further understanding of the underlying factors governing the formation of endohedral species. Herein, we explore the favorable encapsulation of hydride and halide anions in the [Ag₈(X){S₂P(OPr)₂}₆]⁺ (X^- = H, 1, F, 2, Cl, 3, Br, 4, and, I, 5) series on the basis of relativistic DFT-D level of theory. The resulting Ag₈-X interaction is sizable, which decreases along the series: -232.2 (1) > -192.1 (2) > -165.5 (3) > -158.0 (4) > -144.2 kcal mol^-1 (5), denoting a more favorable inclusion of hydride and fluoride anions within the silver cage. Such interaction is mainly stabilized by the high contribution from electrostatic type interactions (80.9 av%), with a lesser contribution from charge-transfer (17.4 av%) and London type interactions (1.7 av%). Moreover, the ionic character of the electrostatic contributions decreases from 90.7% for hydride to 68.6% for the iodide counterpart, in line with the decrease in hardness according to the Pearson's acid-base concept (HSAB) owing to the major role of higher electrostatic interaction terms related to the softer (Lewis) bases. Lastly, the [Ag₈{S₂P(OPr)₂}₆]²⁺ cluster is able to adapt its geometry in order to maximize the interaction towards respective monoatomic anion, exhibiting structural flexibility. Such insights shed light on the physical reasoning necessary for a better understanding of the different stabilizing and destabilizing contributions related to metal-based cavities towards favorable incorporation of different monoatomic anions.

Spectroscopic and Colorimetric Studies for Anions with a New Urea-Based Molecular Cleft

A new simple urea-based dipodal molecular cleft (L) has been synthesized and studied for its binding affinity for a variety of anions by 1H-NMR, UV-Vis and colorimetric techniques in DMSO-d6 and DMSO, respectively. The results from titration studies suggest that the receptor forms a 1:2 complex with each of the anions used via hydrogen bonding interactions and exhibits strong selectivity for fluoride among halides, showing the binding affinity in the order of fluoride > chloride > bromide > iodide; meanwhile, it displays moderate selectivity for acetate among oxoanions, showing the binding affinity in the order of acetate > dihydrogen phosphate > bicarbonate > hydrogen sulfate > nitrate. Colorimetric studies of L for anions in DMSO reveal that the receptor is capable of detecting fluoride, acetate, bicarbonate and dihydrogen phosphate, displaying a visible color change in the presence of the respective anions.

K2S2O8 mediated synthesis of 5-aryldipyrromethanes and meso-substituted A4-tetraarylporphyrins

The synthesis of dipyrromethanes from pyrrole and arylglyoxylic acids in the presence of K2S2O8at 90 [Formula: see text]C is reported affording dipyrromethanes in very good yields. Unlike an excess pyrrole traditionally used in dipyrromethane synthesis, the current method uses a stoichiometric amount of pyrrole avoiding any use of Brønsted or Lewis acid. A gram scale synthesis of 5-phenyldipyrromethane is also achieved demonstrating potential scale up of dipyrromethanes using this method feasible. Subsequently, dipyrromethanes were converted to A4-tetraarylporphyrins also in the presence of K2S2O8at 90[Formula: see text]C. A direct synthesis of A4-tetraphenylporphyrin from excess pyrrole and phenylglyoxylic acid in the presence of K2S2O8 at 90[Formula: see text]C is also reported.

The design of anion-π interactions and hydrogen bonds for the recognition of chloride, bromide and nitrate anions

The role of anions in several biochemical processes has given rise to enormous interest in the identification/exploration of compounds with the potential ability to recognize anions. Here, an anthracene-squaramide conjugated compound, O2C4[NH(C14H10)][(NH(C6H6)], has been modified through the substitutions (i) H → F and (ii) H → OH at the anthracene and benzene rings to improve the capabilities of these structures for recognizing chloride, bromide, and nitrate anions. Through an energy decomposition analysis method, the recognition of the anions is chiefly identified as a non-covalent process. H → F substitutions at the benzene ring and, principally, the anthracene ring favor anion recognition, since H → F substitutions create a π-acid region in the aromatic ring, as indicated based on the molecular electrostatic potential surfaces. Similarly, H → OH substitutions also improve the recognition of anions, which is related to the establishment of partly covalent chemical bonds of the form O-H(Cl-, Br- and O-), which are verified based on the quantitative analysis of the maximum and minimum values of the molecular electrostatic potential surfaces and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules method. The presence of large electron density has a key role in the recognition of Cl- anions, and the more favorable electrostatic interactions between the anthracene structure and Br- anions, relative to NO3- anions, mean that receptorBr- interactions are more attractive than receptorNO3- ones. These data can contribute to the design of structures with the relevant abilities to interact with anions.

Anion-Recognition Studies of a Rhenium(I) 4-Mercaptopyridine Compound and Its Ligand-Coupling Products

The reaction of Re(CO)₅Cl with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-PySH) led to the formation of [Re(CO)₃(4-HPyS)₃]Cl (1), showing three hydrogen-bonding donors of 4-PySH ligands as well as a characteristic ligand-to-metal charge-transfer absorption at ca. 380 nm. In this regard, a variety of anions, i.e., CN^-, OAc^-, F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, PF₆^-, NO₃^-, ClO₄^-, and H₂PO₄^-, were examined to study anion-recognition studies through hydrogen-bonding functionalities. Upon the addition of CN^- to a methanolic solution of complex 1, a remarkable spectral change with an isosbestic point at ca. 314 nm in the absorption spectra was observed, with a binding constant (K_b) calculated to be 24770 M^-1. Moreover, the OAc^- anion also shows a similar trend, but a mild spectral change, with K_b calculated to be 2170 M^-1. Unlike those of CN^- and OAc^-, the addition of F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, and I^- anions causes a less pronounced spectral change with an isosbestic point at ca. 350 nm and K_b calculated to be 2863-750 M^-1. However, almost no spectral change can be observed for other anions (i.e., PF₆^-, NO₃^-, H₂PO₄^-, and ClO₄^-). Interestingly, the molecular loops of [Re(CO)₃Cl(Py₂S₂)]₂ (2; Py₂S₂ = 4,4'-dipyridyl disulfide) and [Re(CO)₃Cl(Py₂S)_0.35(Py₂S₂)_0.65]₂ (3; Py₂S = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide) can be isolated and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction, where those crystals were grown from diethyl ether diffusion into a methanolic solution of complex 1 with [Bu₄N]CN and [Bu₄N]NO₃, respectively. It is noted that such unusual ligand-coupling reactions toward the homoligand and hybrid-ligand loops of complexes 2 and 3 can be achieved at room temperature in this study.

Fluorescence modulation of naphthalene containing salicyl hydrazide-based receptor through aggregation-induced emission enhancement approach: Dual detection of lanthanum and cyanide ions in semi-aqueous medium

The sensing activity of naphthalene containing salicyl hydrazide-based fluorescence receptor has been improved through aggregation-induced enhanced emission mechanism approach in semi-aqueous medium. The receptor has been found to be selective toward La³⁺ with approximately 70-fold fluorescence enhancement due to a combined effect of keto-enol tautomerism inhibition and chelation enhanced fluorescence with a detection limit of 3.91 × 10^-6 M. In addition, the receptor is also able to sense CN^- with a detection limit of 3.55 × 10^-6 M via deprotonation effect, justifying its multiple analyte sensing behaviour. Hence, the current analytical methodology improves the sensing activity of the probe and also provides a greener alternative for La³⁺ and CN^- detection.

Anion Binding Studies of Urea and Thiourea Functionalized Molecular Clefts

Two rationally designed 4-nitrophenyl-based molecular clefts functionalized with thiourea (L₁) and urea (L₂) have been synthesized and studied for a variety of anions by UV-Vis and colorimetric techniques in DMSO. Results from the binding studies suggest that both L₁ and L₂ bind halides showing the order: fluoride > chloride > bromide > iodide; and oxoanions showing the order: dihydrogen phosphate > hydrogen sulfate > nitrate > perchlorate. Each receptor has been shown to form a 1:1 complex with an anion via hydrogen bonding interactions, displaying distinct color change for fluoride and dihydrogen phosphate in solution. As compared to the urea-based receptor L₂, the thiourea-based receptor L₁ exhibits stronger affinity for anions due the presence of more acidic thiourea functional groups.

Potentiometric Carboxylate Sensors Based on Carbazole-Derived Acyclic and Macrocyclic Ionophores

Solid-contact ion-selective electrodes with carbazole-derived ionophores were prepared. They were characterized as acetate sensors, but can be used to determine a number of carboxylates. The potentiometric response characteristics (slope, detection limit, selectivity, and pH sensitivity) of sensors prepared with different membrane compositions (ionophore, ionophore concentration, anion exchanger concentration, and plasticizer) were evaluated. The results show that for the macrocyclic ionophores, a larger cavity provided better selectivity. The sensors exhibited modest selectivity for acetate but good selectivity for benzoate. The carbazole-derived ionophores effectively decreased the interference from lipophilic anions, such as bromide, nitrate, iodide, and thiocyanate. The selectivity, detection limit, and linear range were improved by choosing a suitable plasticizer and by reducing the ionophore and anion exchanger concentrations. The influence of the electrode body’s material upon the composition of the plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane, and thus also upon the sensor characteristics, was also studied. The choice of materials for the electrode body significantly affected the characteristics of the sensors.
