Abstract
Discrete bimetallic catalysts often provide enhanced reactivity and selectivity in lactone polymerization, making metal-metal cooperativity an important design principle for new catalyst development. However, the poor modularity of binucleating ligands limits structure-reactivity analysis and optimization. This report describes a modular, binucleating bis(pyrazolyl)alkane ligand series (1-R) bridged by a chiral binaphthol unit, prepared by nucleophile-catalyzed condensation between a dialdehyde and a bis(pyrazolyl)methanone. A bis(ethylzinc) complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, but in situ complexation with Zn(HMDS)2 and Mg(HMDS)2 provided more active catalysts for lactide polymerization (HMDS- = hexamethyldisilazide). Structure-reactivity studies identified complexes of 1-Me2 as the most active, and these catalysts show significant enhancements in rate compared to their monometallic analogues. Kinetic analysis resulted in first-order dependence on both mono- and bimetallic catalysts, suggesting metal-metal cooperativity as the basis for this rate enhancement. End-group analysis and low dispersity implicate a coordination-insertion mechanism through an alkoxide. Despite rapid transesterification observed by MALDI, we still demonstrated controlled polymerization in the block copolymerization of ε-caprolactone and L-lactide. Although we observed rate differences in the polymerization of L-lactide by opposite enantiomer catalysts, we did not observe catalyst-directed stereoselectivity in the polymerization of rac- or meso-lactide.

Abstract
Polyolefin plastics are widely used due to their low cost and outstanding properties, but their environmental persistence presents a major societal challenge. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable substitutes for polyolefins, but their high cost and thermal instability are impediments to their widespread application. Here we report a series of methylated polyhydroxybutyrates, poly(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate)s, which are structurally inspired by natural PHAs. The cis homopolymers exhibit tacticity-independent crystallinity, which allows for the discovery of high-melting, thermally stable and mechanically tough copolymers, and a full range of polyolefin-like properties can be further achieved by tailoring the cis/trans ratio of the repeating units. Moreover, these materials can be synthesized from inexpensive carbon monoxide and 2-butene feedstocks, and they can be chemically recycled or upcycled at their end of life. The versatile properties, abundant feedstocks and end-of-life utility of this family of polyesters will enable a powerful platform for the discovery of sustainable alternatives to polyolefin plastics.

Abstract
The direct reaction of the highly sterically demanding acetamidinate-based NNN'-scorpionate protioligand Hphbptamd [Hphbptamd = N,N'-di-p-tolylbis(3,5-di-tertbutylpyrazole-1-yl)acetamidine] with one equiv. of ZnMe2 proceeds in high yield to the mononuclear alkyl zinc complex [ZnMe(κ3-phbptamd)] (1). Alternatively, the treatment of the corresponding lithium precursor [Li(phbptamd)(THF)] with ZnCl2 yielded the halide complex [ZnCl(κ3-phbptamd)] (2). The X-ray crystal structure of 1 confirmed unambiguously a mononuclear entity in these complexes, with the zinc centre arranged with a pseudotetrahedral environment and the scorpionate ligand in a κ3-coordination mode. Interestingly, the inexpensive, low-toxic and easily prepared complexes 1 and 2 resulted in highly efficient catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of lactides, a sustainable bio-resourced process industrially demanded. Thus, complex 1 behaved as a single-component robust initiator for the living and immortal ROP of rac-lactide under very mild conditions after a few hours, reaching a TOF value up to 5520 h-1 under bulk conditions. Preliminary kinetic studies revealed apparent zero-order dependence on monomer concentration in the absence of a cocatalyst. The PLA materials produced exhibited narrow dispersity values, good agreement between the experimental Mn values and monomer/benzyl alcohol ratios, as well as enhanced levels of heteroselectivity, reaching Ps values up to 0.74.

Abstract
We present the synthesis and coordination chemistry of a bulky, tripodal N,N,O ligand, ImPh2NNOtBu (L), designed to model the 2‐His‐1‐carboxylate facial triad (2H1C) by means of two imidazole groups and an anionic 2,4‐di‐tert‐butyl‐subtituted phenolate. Reacting K‐L with MCl2 (M = Fe, Zn) affords the isostructural, tetrahedral non‐heme complexes [Fe(L)(Cl)] (1) and [Zn(L)(Cl)] (2) in high yield. The tridentate N,N,O ligand coordination observed in their X‐ray crystal structures remains intact and well‐defined in MeCN and CH2Cl2 solution. Reacting 2 with NaSPh affords a tetrahedral zinc thiolate complex, [Zn(L)(SPh)] (4), that is relevant to isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS) biomimicry. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate the ligand's redox non‐innocence, where phenolate oxidation is the first electrochemical response observed in K‐L, 2 and 4. However, the first electrochemical oxidation in 1 is iron‐centred, the assignment of which is supported by DFT calculations. Overall, ImPh2NNOtBu provides access to well‐defined mononuclear, monoligated, N,N,O‐bound metal complexes, enabling more accurate structural modelling of the 2H1C to be achieved.

Abstract
Compounds of Li, Na, K and Ca of a tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato) ligand were prepared. Bimetallic compounds formulated as M2[L](THF)n (where M = Na, n = 1 (1·THF) or Li, n = 1 (2·THF)) were synthesized via the reaction of H2[L] (where [L] = 2-pyridylmethylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methoxy-6-tert-butylphenolato) with sodium hydride or n-butyllithium, respectively, in THF. Monometallic complexes MH[L](THF)n (where M = Na, n = 1 (3·THF), Li, n = 0 (4) and K, n = 0 (5)) were obtained by reaction of H2[L] with MN(SiMe3)2 where M = Na, Li, or K. Calcium complex Ca[L](THF) (6·THF) was synthesized in two ways; reaction of Na2[L] with calcium iodide in THF, and reaction of Ca[N(SiMe3)2]2 with H2[L] in toluene. Compounds 1-6 exhibit activity for rac-lactide polymerization under melt and solution conditions. Moderate control of polymer molecular weights was achieved in toluene, whereas polydisperse polymer was obtained under solvent free conditions. MALDI-TOF MS analysis of the polymer end groups revealed a predominantly cyclic nature for the polylactides.

Abstract
A new family of sterically demanding N2N' heteroscorpionate pro-ligands (HC(tBu2pz)2SiMe2N(H)R (R = iPr, tBu, Ph, Xyl)) has been prepared via a straightforward modular synthetic route. An extensive study into the synthesis and characterisation of lithium, magnesium, calcium and zinc complexes supported by both 3,5-tBu and 3,5-Me substituted N2N' ligand families has been conducted. Attempted deprotonation of the pro-ligands with nBuLi afforded the corresponding lithium salts Li{HC(tBu2pz)2SiMe2NR} (R = iPr (1), tBu (2), Ph (3) and Xyl (4)) but air- and thermal-sensitivity limited the yields of these potentially useful precursors; only the sterically encumbered ligand system allowed clean reactivity. Magnesium methyl complexes Mg{HC(tBu2pz)2SiMe2NR}Me (R = iPr (5) and R = Ph (6)) were prepared using an excess of the Grignard reagent MeMgCl. Magnesium butyl complexes were synthesised in good yields using the dialkyl precursor MgnBu2 to afford Mg{HC(R'2pz)2SiMe2NR}nBu (R' = Me; R = iPr (7), tBu (8), Ad (9), Ph (10). R' = tBu; R = iPr (11), Ph (12)). Protonolylsis reactions were used to synthesise magnesium and calcium amide complexes Mg{HC(R'2pz)2SiMe2NR}{N(SiHMe2)2} (R' = Me; R = iPr (13), tBu (14), Ph (15). R' = tBu; R = Ph (16)) or Mg{HC(R'2pz)2SiMe2NR}{N(SiMe3)2} (R' = Me; R = iPr (17), tBu (18), Ph (19). R' = tBu; R = Ph (20)), and Ca{HC(R'2pz)2SiMe2NR}{N(SiMe2)2} (L) (R' = Me; L = thf; R = iPr (21), tBu (22), Ph (23). R' = tBu; L = none; R = Ph (24). Zinc methyl complexes Zn{HC(R'2pz)2SiMe2NR}Me (R' = Me; R = iPr (25), tBu (26), Ph (27). R' = tBu; R = Ph (28)) were prepared by reaction of the N2N' heteroscorpionate pro-ligands with ZnMe2. In preliminary studies, magnesium amide complexes 16 and 20 were evaluated as initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and rac-lactide (rac-LA). Although the overall polymerisation control was poor, 16 and 20 were found to be active initiators.

Abstract
A new ditopic ligand, N-(2,2-bis(pyrazolyl)ethyl)-2,2-bis(pyrazolyl)acetamide ((pz)2CH-C(O)-NH-CH2-CH(pz)2, L4Pz, pz = pyrazolyl ring), comprising two bis(pyrazolyl)methane donor groups linked via an amide bridge, has been prepared from the reaction of HOOCCH(pz)2 and H2NCH2CH(pz)2. The ligand coordinates to various metallic salts (i.e. AgO3SCF3, PdCl2, Re(CO)5Br, and Fe(BF4)2), in either a κ2-μ-κ2 or a κ3-μ-κ2 fashion, depending on the coordination preferences of the metallic center. These compounds were characterized by NMR, UV-Vis and IR spectroscopy, and in solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the case of silver(i), a mono-dimensional coordination polymer was obtained, while the others were found to be discrete complexes. The synthesis and characterization of a heterobimetallic complex is also described. In solid state, all compounds are associated into supramolecular architectures via hydrogen bonding and pyrazolyl embrace interactions.

Abstract
Neutral zinc alkoxide complexes show high activity toward the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters and carbonates, to generate biodegradable plastics applicable in several areas. Herein, we use a ferrocene-chelating heteroscorpionate complex in redox-switchable polymerization reactions, and we show that it is a moderately active catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide, ɛ-caprolactone, trimethylene carbonate, and δ-valerolactone. Uniquely for this type of catalyst, the oxidized complex has a similar polymerization activity as the corresponding reduced compound, but displays significantly different rates of reaction in the case of trimethylene carbonate and δ-valerolactone. Investigations of the oxidized compound suggest the presence of an organic radical rather than an Fe(III) complex. Electronic structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to support the proposed electronic states of the catalytic complex and to help explain the observed reactivity differences. The catalyst was also compared with a monomeric phenoxide complex to show the influence of the phosphine-zinc interaction on catalytic properties. Dimeric and monomeric zinc heteroscorpionate species were prepared Monomeric zinc complex gives irreversible chemical redox and is inactive toward ROP Dimeric zinc complex gives reversible chemical redox and is inactive toward ROP Oxidation of the zinc benzoxide species occurs at the phosphine moiety

Abstract
There are challenges in using magnesium coordination complexes as reagents owing to their tendency to adopt varying aggregation states in solution and thus impacting the reactivity of the complexes. Many magnesium complexes are prone to ligand redistributionviaSchlenk equilibrium due to the ionic character within the metal–ligand interactions. The role of the supporting ligand is often crucial for providing stability to the heteroleptic complex. Strategies to minimize ligand redistribution in alkaline earth metal complexes could include using a supporting ligand with tunable sterics and electronics to influence the degree of association to the metal atom. Magnesium bis(hexamethyldisilazide) was reacted with salicylaldimines [1L=N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)salicylaldimine and2L= 3,5-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)salicylaldimine] in either nondonor (toluene) or donor solvents [tetrahydrofuran (THF) or pyridine]. The structures of the magnesium complexes were studied in the solid stateviaX-ray diffraction. In the nondonor solvent,i.e.toluene, the heteroleptic complex bis{μ-2-[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)iminomethyl]phenolato}-κ3N,O:O;κ3O:N,O-bis[(hexamethyldisilazido-κN)magnesium(II)], [Mg2(C19H22NO)2(C6H18NSi2)2] or [1LMgN(SiMe3)2]2, (1), was favored, while in the donor solvent,i.e.pyridine (pyr), the formation of the homoleptic complex {2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)iminomethyl]phenolato-κ2N,O}bis(pyridine-κN)magnesium(II) toluene monosolvate, [Mg(C27H38NO)2(C5H5N)2]·C5H5N or [{2L2Mg2(pyr)2}·pyr], (2), predominated. Heteroleptic complex (1) was crystallized from toluene, while homoleptic complexes (2) and the previously reported [1L2Mg·THF] [Quinqueet al.(2011).Eur. J. Inorg. Chem.pp. 3321–3326] were crystallized from pyridine and THF, respectively. These studies support solvent-dependent ligand redistribution in solution.In-situ1H NMR experiments were carried out to further probe the solution behavior of these systems.

Abstract
Magnesium compounds of tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato) ligands, Mg[L1] (1) and Mg[L2] (2) (where [L1] = 2-pyridyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methoxy-6-tert-butylphenolato), and [L2] = dimethylaminoethylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenolato)) were prepared. The proligands, H2[L1] and H2[L2] were reacted with di(n-butyl)magnesium in toluene to give the desired compounds in high yields. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit dimeric structures in solutions of non-coordinating solvents as observed by NMR spectroscopy and in the solid state as shown by the single crystal X-ray structure of 2. These compounds exhibit good activity for rac-lactide polymerization in solution and in molten lactide.

Abstract
Lithium compounds of tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato)-tetrahydrofuranyl ligands, Li(2)[L1] (1) and Li(2)[L2] (2) (where [L1] = 2-tetrahydrofuranyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenolate), and [L2] = 2-tetrahydrofuranyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4,6-tert-butylphenolate)) were characterized by multinuclear solution NMR and solid-state (6)Li and (7)Li NMR spectroscopy. The proligands, n-propylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol), (H(2)[L3]) and benzylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4,6-di-tert-amylphenol), H(2)[L4] were reacted with n-butyllithium in THF to give the related dilithium compounds Li(2)[L3] (4) and Li(2)[L4] (5), respectively. The pyridine adduct of 1, (py)(2)Li(2)[L1] (3) and complexes 4 and 5 have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity of these complexes for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide, as well as the influences of monomer concentration, monomer/Li molar ratio, polymerization temperature and time, were studied.

Abstract
A series of lithium complexes were prepared from 2(N-piperazinyl-N'-methyl)-2-methylene-4-R'-6-R-phenols ([ONN](RR')) and characterized through elemental analysis, (1)H and (13)C{(1)H} NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Treatment of the ligands with n-butyllithium afforded {Li[ONN](RR')}(3) [R = Me, R' = (t)Bu, (1); R = R' = (t)Bu (2); R = R' = (t)Am, (3), (t)Am = C(CH(3))(2)CH(2)CH(3)], with trimetallic structures in the solid-state as shown by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reactivity of these complexes in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), as well as the influences of monomer concentration, monomer/Li molar ratio, polymerization temperature and time, was studied. Rates of polymerization were first order with respect to both monomer and lithium concentrations, and activation energies for the reactions were determined. MALDI-TOF MS analysis revealed that transesterification had occurred during the polymerization.
