Preparation of Biocomposite Soft Nanoparticles Composed of Poly(Propylene Oxide) and the Polymer-Binding Peptides

The molecular recognition capability of naturally occurring biomolecules is generally expressed against biomolecules in the biological milieu. Recently, it was demonstrated that the specific interactions of biomolecules such as short peptides were applicable to artificial materials. We have developed peptides with specific affinities for synthetic polymers toward functional biocomposite polymeric materials. In this study, we demonstrated the preparation of biocomposite nanoparticles composed of poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and PPO-binding peptides. A simple injection of a concentrated PPO solution dissolved in an organic solvent into the peptide solution under sonication resulted in the formation of nanospherical structures. Morphological observation indicated characteristic softness and high applicability as a molecular carrier of the biocomposite nanoparticles. Structural characterization of PPO and the PPO-binding peptide revealed the structural conformability of these molecules to interact specifically with each other. Our findings expand the potential applicability of polymer-binding peptides for the future construction of biomedical materials composed of peptides and various polymers.

A new method to generate arene-terminated Si(111) and Ge(111) surfaces via a palladium-catalyzed arylation reaction

Formation of silicon-aryl and germanium-aryl direct bonds on the semiconductor surface is a key issue to realize molecular electronic devices, but the conventional methods based on radical intermediates have problems to accompany the side reactions. We developed the first example of versatile and efficient methods to form clean organic monolayers with Si-aryl and Ge-aryl bonds on hydrogen-terminated silicon and germanium surfaces by applying our original catalytic arylation reactions of hydrosilanes and hydrogermanes using Pd catalyst and base in homogeneous systems. We could immobilize aromatic groups with redox-active and photoluminescent properties, and further applied in the field of rigid π-conjugated redox molecular wire composites, as confirmed by the successive coordination of terpyridine molecules with transition metal ions. The surfaces were characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV), water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Especially, the AFM analysis of 17 nm-long metal complex molecular wires confirmed their vertical connection to the plane surface.

1,2-Bis(4-ethynylphen-yl)disulfane

In the title compound, C(16)H(10)S(2), the S atoms are almost coplanar with the benzene rings to which they are bonded [deviations of 0.092 (1) and 0.022 (1) Å from their respective ring planes]. The benzene rings enclose a dihedral angle of 79.17 (3)°. An intra-molecular C-H⋯S hydrogen bond results in the formation of a five-membered ring. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are stacked parallel to the a axis direction. π-π inter-actions between benzene rings are present, with a face-to-face stacking distance of 3.622 (10) Å.
