Abstract
Reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) with H2 to N2 and water is an attractive process for the decomposition of this greenhouse gas to environmentally benign species. Herein, a series of iridium complexes based on proton-responsive pincer ligands (1-4) are shown to catalyze the hydrogenation of N2O under mild conditions (2 bar H2/N2O (1:1), 30 °C). Among the tested catalysts, the Ir complex 4, based on a lutidine-derived CNP pincer ligand having nonequivalent phosphine and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) side donors, gave rise to the highest catalytic activity (turnover frequency (TOF) = 11.9 h-1 at 30 °C, and 16.4 h-1 at 55 °C). Insights into the reaction mechanism with 4 have been obtained through NMR spectroscopy. Thus, reaction of 4 with N2O in tetrahydrofuran-d8 (THF-d8) initially produces deprotonated (at the NHC arm) species 5NHC, which readily reacts with H2 to regenerate the trihydride complex 4. However, prolonged exposure of 4 to N2O for 6 h yields the dinitrogen Ir(I) complex 7P, having a deprotonated (at the P-arm) pincer ligand. Complex 7P is a poor catalytic precursor in the N2O hydrogenation, pointing out to the formation of 7P as a catalyst deactivation pathway. Moreover, when the reaction of 4 with N2O is carried out in wet THF-d8, formation of a new species, which has been assigned to the hydroxo species 8, is observed. Finally, taking into account the experimental results, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to get information on the catalytic cycle steps. Calculations are in agreement with 4 as the TOF-determining intermediate (TDI) and the transfer of an apical hydrido ligand to the terminal nitrogen atom of N2O as the TOF-determining transition state (TDTS), with very similar reaction rates for the mechanisms involving either the NHC- or the P-CH2 pincer methylene linkers.

Dehydropolymerization of H 3B·NMeH 2 Mediated by Cationic Iridium(III) Precatalysts Bearing κ 3- iPr-PN RP Pincer Ligands ( R = H, Me): An Unexpected Inner-Sphere Mechanism. Abstract
![]()
The dehydropolymerization of H3B·NMeH2 to form N-methylpolyaminoborane using neutral
and
cationic catalysts based on the {Ir(iPr-PNHP)} fragment [iPr-PNHP = κ3-(CH2CH2PiPr2)2NH] is reported. Neutral
Ir(iPr-PNHP)H3 or
Ir(iPr-PNHP)H2Cl
precatalysts show no, or poor and unselective, activity respectively
at 298 K in 1,2-F2C6H4 solution.
In contrast, addition of [NMeH3][BArF4] (ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) to Ir(iPr-PNHP)H3 immediately starts catalysis, suggesting that a cationic
catalytic manifold operates. Consistent with this, independently synthesized
cationic precatalysts are active (tested between 0.5 and 2.0 mol %
loading) producing poly(N-methylaminoborane) with Mn ∼ 40,000 g/mol, Đ ∼1.5, i.e., dihydrogen/dihydride, [Ir(iPr-PNHP)(H)2(H2)][BArF4]; σ-amine-borane [Ir(iPr-PNHP)(H)2(H3B·NMe3)][BArF4]; and [Ir(iPr-PNHP)(H)2(NMeH2)][BArF4]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations
probe hydride exchange processes in two of these complexes and also
show that the barrier to amine-borane dehydrogenation is lower (22.5
kcal/mol) for the cationic system compared with the neutral system
(24.3 kcal/mol). The calculations show that the dehydrogenation proceeds
via an inner-sphere process without metal–ligand cooperativity,
and this is supported experimentally by N–Me substituted [Ir(iPr-PNMeP)(H)2(H3B·NMe3)][BArF4] being
an active catalyst. Key to the lower barrier calculated for the cationic
system is the outer-sphere coordination of an additional H3B·NMeH2 with the N–H group of the ligand.
Experimentally, kinetic studies indicate a complex reaction manifold
that shows pronounced deceleratory temporal profiles. As supported
by speciation and DFT studies, a key observation is that deprotonation
of [Ir(iPr-NHP)(H)2(H2)][BArF4], formed upon amine-borane
dehydrogenation, by the slow in situ formation of NMeH2 (via B–N bond cleavage), results in the formation of essentially
inactive Ir(iPr-PNHP)H3, with a coproduct of [NMeH3]+/[H2B(NMeH2)2]+. While reprotonation
of Ir(iPr-PNHP)H3 results in a return to the cationic cycle, it is proposed, supported
by doping experiments, that reprotonation is attenuated by entrainment
of the [NMeH3]+/[H2B(NMeH2)2]+/catalyst in insoluble polyaminoborane.
The role of [NMeH3]+/[H2B(NMeH2)]+ as chain control agents is also noted.

Abstract
A novel pincer ligand, iPrPNPhP [PhN(CH2CH2PiPr2)2], which is an analogue of the versatile MACHO ligand, iPrPNHP [HN(CH2CH2PiPr2)2], was synthesized and characterized. The ligand was coordinated to ruthenium, and a series of hydride-containing complexes were isolated and characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopies, as well as X-ray diffraction. Comparisons to previously published analogues ligated by iPrPNHP and iPrPNMeP [CH3N(CH2CH2PiPr2)2] illustrate that there are large changes in the coordination chemistry that occur when the nitrogen substituent of the pincer ligand is altered. For example, ruthenium hydrides supported by the iPrPNPhP ligand always form the syn isomer (where syn/anti refer to the relative orientation of the group on nitrogen and the hydride ligand on ruthenium), whereas complexes supported by iPrPNHP form the anti isomer and complexes supported by iPrPNMeP form a mixture of syn and anti isomers. We evaluated the impact of the nitrogen substituent of the pincer ligand in catalysis by comparing a series of iPrPNRP (R = H, Me, Ph)-ligated ruthenium hydride complexes as catalysts for formic acid dehydrogenation and carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation to formate. The iPrPNPhP-ligated species is the most active for formic acid dehydrogenation, and mechanistic studies suggest that this is likely because there are kinetic advantages for catalysts that operate via the syn isomer. In CO2 hydrogenation, the iPrPNPhP-ligated species is again the most active under our optimal conditions, and we report some of the highest turnover frequencies for homogeneous catalysts. Experimental and theoretical insights into the turnover-limiting step of catalysis provide a basis for the observed trends in catalytic activity. Additionally, the stability of our complexes enabled us to detect a previously unobserved autocatalytic effect involving the base that is added to drive the reaction. Overall, by modifying the nitrogen substituent on the MACHO ligand, we have developed highly active catalysts for formic acid dehydrogenation and CO2 hydrogenation and also provided a framework for future catalyst development.

Abstract
Molecular metal/NH bifunctional Noyori-type catalysts are remarkable in that they are among the most efficient artificial catalysts developed to date for the hydrogenation of carbonyl functionalities (loadings up to ∼10-5 mol %). In addition, these catalysts typically exhibit high C═O/C═C chemo- and enantioselectivities. This unique set of properties is traditionally associated with the operation of an unconventional mechanism for homogeneous catalysts in which the chelating ligand plays a key role in facilitating the catalytic reaction and enabling the aforementioned selectivities by delivering/accepting a proton (H+) via its N-H bond cleavage/formation. A recently revised mechanism of the Noyori hydrogenation reaction (Dub, P. A. et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 3505) suggests that the N-H bond is not cleaved but serves to stabilize the turnover-determining transition states (TDTSs) via strong N-H···O hydrogen-bonding interactions (HBIs). The present paper shows that this is consistent with the largely ignored experimental fact that alkylation of the N-H functionality within M/NH bifunctional Noyori-type catalysts leads to detrimental catalytic activity. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that decreasing the strength of this HBI, ultimately to the limit of its complete absence, are conditions under which the same alkylation may lead to beneficial catalytic activity.

Abstract
Hydrogen constitutes an important feedstock for clean-energy technologies as well as for production of bulk and fine chemicals. Hence, the development of novel processes to convert easily available biomass into H2 is of general interest. Herein, we demonstrate a one-pot protocol hydrogen generation from monosaccharides, disaccharide, and extremely demanding cellulose and lignocellulose substrates by using a pincer-type iridium catalyst. Applying ppm amounts of this catalyst, hydrogen is produced at temperatures lower than 120 °C. More specifically, catalyst turnover numbers (TONs) for lignocellulose from bamboo reached up to about 3000. Interestingly, even (used) cigarette filters, which are composed of cellulose acetate, produce hydrogen under optimized conditions.

Abstract
The organometallic approach is one of the most active topics in catalysis. The application of NH functionality in organometallic catalysis has become an important and attractive concept in catalyst design. NH moieties in the modifiers of organometallic catalysts have been shown to have various beneficial functions in catalysis by molecular recognition through hydrogen bonding to give catalyst-substrate, ligand-ligand, ligand-catalyst, and catalyst-catalyst interactions. This Review summarizes recent progress in the development of the organometallic catalysts based on the concept of cooperative catalysis by focusing on the NH moiety.
