Hydrogen atom abstraction from C-H bonds of benzylamides by the aminoxyl radical BTNO: a kinetic study

Quantitative evaluation of the actual hydrogen atom donating activities of O-H bonds in phenols: structure-activity relationship

The H-donating activity of phenol and the H-abstraction activity of phenol radicals have been extensively studied. In this article, the second-order rate constants of 25 hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions between phenols and PINO and DPPH radicals in acetonitrile at 298 K were studied. Thermo-kinetic parameters ΔG ^≠o(XH) were obtained using a kinetic equation [ΔG ^≠ _XH/Y = ΔG ^≠o(XH) + ΔG ^≠o(Y)]. Bond dissociation free energies ΔG ^o(XH) were calculated by the iBonD HM method, whose details are available at https://pka.luoszgroup.com/bde_prediction. Intrinsic resistance energies ΔG ^≠ _XH/X and ΔG ^≠o(X) were determined as ΔG ^≠o(XH) and ΔG ^o(XH) were available. ΔG ^o(XH), ΔG ^≠ _XH/X, ΔG ^≠o(XH) and ΔG ^≠o(X) were used to assess the H-donating abilities of the studied phenols and the H-abstraction abilities of phenol radicals in thermodynamics, kinetics and actual HAT reactions. The effect of structures on these four parameters was discussed. The reliabilities of ΔG ^≠o(XH) and ΔG ^≠o(X) were examined. The difference between the method of determining ΔG ^≠ _XH/X mentioned in this study and the dynamic nuclear magnetic method mentioned in the literature was studied. Via this study, not only ΔG ^o(XH), ΔG ^≠ _XH/X, ΔG ^≠o(XH) and ΔG ^≠o(X) of phenols could be quantitatively evaluated, but also the structure-activity relationship of phenols is clearly demonstrated. Moreover, it lays the foundation for designing and synthesizing more antioxidants and radicals.

New Insights into the Actual H-Abstraction Activities of Important Oxygen and Nitrogen Free Radicals: Thermodynamics and Kinetics in Acetonitrile

The H-abstraction activity of a free radical is a research hotspot and has been extensively studied. In this article, the second-order rate constants of 21 HAT reactions in acetonitrile at 298 K were chosen from several published literature. A kinetic study on the H-abstraction reaction from TEMPOH by a DPPH^• radical was carried out. This reaction was researched as an insertion point. By combining this reaction with the 21 HAT reactions in this paper, the thermokinetic parameters of 28 free radicals X and their corresponding antioxidants XH were obtained by the cross-HAT reaction method. The scales of the H-abstraction activities of these 28 oxygen and nitrogen free radicals were determined by using the thermokinetic parameters ΔG ^≠o(X). Applications of the thermokinetic parameter ΔG ^≠o(X) in assessing the actual H-abstraction activity of a free radical quantitatively and selecting a suitable free radical in scientific research and chemical production were discussed. Predictions of the rate constants by using thermokinetic parameters of reactants were researched, and the reliabilities of the predicted activation free energies of XH/Y reactions were also examined.

Bimodal Evans-Polanyi Relationships in Hydrogen Atom Transfer from C(sp3)-H Bonds to the Cumyloxyl Radical. A Combined Time-Resolved Kinetic and Computational Study

The applicability of the Evans-Polanyi (EP) relationship to HAT reactions from C(sp3)-H bonds to the cumyloxyl radical (CumO•) has been investigated. A consistent set of rate constants, kH, for HAT from the C-H bonds of 56 substrates to CumO•, spanning a range of more than 4 orders of magnitude, has been measured under identical experimental conditions. A corresponding set of consistent gas-phase C-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) spanning 27 kcal mol-1 has been calculated using the (RO)CBS-QB3 method. The log kH' vs C-H BDE plot shows two distinct EP relationships, one for substrates bearing benzylic and allylic C-H bonds (unsaturated group) and the other one, with a steeper slope, for saturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, diols, amines, and carbamates (saturated group), in line with the bimodal behavior observed previously in theoretical studies of reactions promoted by other HAT reagents. The parallel use of BDFEs instead of BDEs allows the transformation of this correlation into a linear free energy relationship, analyzed within the framework of the Marcus theory. The ΔG⧧HAT vs ΔG°HAT plot shows again distinct behaviors for the two groups. A good fit to the Marcus equation is observed only for the saturated group, with λ = 58 kcal mol-1, indicating that with the unsaturated group λ must increase with increasing driving force. Taken together these results provide a qualitative connection between Bernasconi's principle of nonperfect synchronization and Marcus theory and suggest that the observed bimodal behavior is a general feature in the reactions of oxygen-based HAT reagents with C(sp3)-H donors.

Hydrogen Atom Transfer from Benzyl Alcohols to N-Oxyl Radicals. Reactivity Parameters

A model for predicting the rate constants of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the α-C-H bond of p-substituted benzyl alcohols to N-oxyl radicals was proposed. To quantify the factors governing the reactivity of both N-oxyl radicals and benzyl alcohols, multivariate regression analysis was performed using various combinations of reactivity parameters. The analysis was based on a 2D array of 35 HAT reactions, the rate constants of which span 4 orders of magnitude. The proposed polyparameter equation approximates the experimental rate constants of reactions with high accuracy using three independent parameters: Brown and Okamoto's substituent constants σ⁺ in alcohol molecules and the spin population on O and N atoms in the N-O^• fragment of N-oxyl radicals [calculated by DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)]. The rate constants of HAT reactions from p-substituted benzyl alcohols to a series of aryl-substituted phthalimide-N-oxyl radicals containing either electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents (4-Cl, 4-HOOC, 4-CH₃O), quinolinimide-N-oxyl, benzotriazole-N-oxyl, and violuric acid radicals were experimentally determined at 30 °C in acetonitrile.

Palladium aminopyridine complexes catalyzed selective benzylic C–H oxidations with peracetic acid

Palladium complexes with tripodal ligands of the tpa family efficiently catalyze benzylic C–H oxidation of various substrates with peracetic acid, affording the corresponding ketones in high yields (up to 100%), at <1 mol% catalyst loadings.

Practical N-Hydroxyphthalimide-Mediated Oxidation of Sulfonamides to N-Sulfonylimines

A new method to prepare sulfonylimines through the oxidation of sulfonamides mediated by N-hydroxyphthalimide under mild conditions has been developed. Compared to reported oxidation methods, broader substrates scope and milder conditions were achieved in our method. Importantly, this oxidation method can afford N-sulfonyl enaminones using Mannich products as starting materials. Additionally, the one-pot Friedel-Crafts arylation reaction of unseparated N-sulfonylimine formed in our system with 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene was successful without any additional catalyst.

Catalytic β C-H amination via an imidate radical relay

An iodine-catalyzed strategy for β C–H amination of alcohols is enabled by a chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selective H-atom transfer mechanism.

The first catalytic strategy to harness imidate radicals for C–H functionalization has been developed. This iodine-catalyzed approach enables β C–H amination of alcohols by an imidate-mediated radical relay. In contrast to our first-generation, (super)stoichiometric protocol, this catalytic method enables faster and more efficient reactivity. Furthermore, lower oxidant concentration affords broader functional group tolerance, including alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, carbonyls, and heteroarenes. Mechanistic experiments interrogating the electronic nature of the key 1,5 H-atom transfer event are included, as well as probes for chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selectivity.

Hydrogen Atom Transfer from Alkanols and Alkanediols to the Cumyloxyl Radical: Kinetic Evaluation of the Contribution of α-C-H Activation and β-C-H Deactivation

A kinetic study on the reactions of the cumyloxyl radical (CumO^•) with a series of alkanols and alkanediols has been carried out. Predominant hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the α-C-H bonds of these substrates, activated by the presence of the OH group, is observed. The comparable k_H values measured for ethanol and 1-propanol and the increase in k_H measured upon going from 1,2-diols to structurally related 1,3- and 1,4-diols is indicative of β-C-H deactivation toward HAT to the electrophilic CumO^•, determined by the electron-withdrawing character of the OH group. No analogous deactivation is observed for the corresponding diamines, in agreement with the weaker electron-withdrawing character of the NH₂ group. The significantly lower k_H values measured for reaction of CumO^• with densely oxygenated methyl pyranosides as compared to cyclohexanol derivatives highlights the role of β-C-H deactivation. The contribution of torsional effects on reactivity is evidenced by the ∼2-fold increase in k_H observed upon going from the trans isomers of 4- tert-butylcyclohexanol and 1,2- and 1,4-cyclohexanediol to the corresponding cis isomers. These results provide an evaluation of the role of electronic and torsional effects on HAT reactions from alcohols and diols to CumO^•, uncovering moreover β-C-H deactivation as a relevant contributor in defining site selectivity.

Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT) Processes Promoted by the Quinolinimide-N-oxyl Radical. A Kinetic and Theoretical Study

A kinetic study of the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions from a series of organic compounds to the quinolinimide-N-oxyl radical (QINO) was performed in CH₃CN. The HAT rate constants are significantly higher than those observed with the phthalimide-N-oxyl radical (PINO) as a result of enthalpic and polar effects due to the presence of the N-heteroaromatic ring in QINO. The relevance of polar effects is supported by theoretical calculations conducted for the reactions of the two N-oxyl radicals with toluene, which indicate that the HAT process is characterized by a significant degree of charge transfer permitted by the π-stacking that occurs between the toluene and the N-oxyl aromatic rings in the transition state structures. An increase in the HAT reactivity of QINO was observed in the presence of 0.15 M HClO₄ and 0.15 M Mg(ClO₄)₂ due to the protonation or complexation with the Lewis acid of the pyridine nitrogen that leads to a further decrease in the electron density in the N-oxyl radical. These results fully support the use of N-hydroxyquinolinimide as a convenient substitute for N-hydroxyphthalimide in the catalytic aerobic oxidations of aliphatic hydrocarbons characterized by relatively high C-H bond dissociation energies.

Heterolytic (2 e) vs Homolytic (1 e) Oxidation Reactivity: N-H versus C-H Switch in the Oxidation of Lactams by Dioxirans

Dioxiranes are powerful oxidants that can act via two different mechanisms: 1) homolytic (H abstraction and oxygen rebound) and 2) heterolytic (electrophilic oxidation). So far, it has been reported that the nature of the substrate dictates the reaction mode independently from the dioxirane employed. Herein, we report an unprecedented case in which the nature of the dioxirane rules the oxidation chemoselectivity. In particular, a switch from C-H to N-H oxidation is observed in the oxidation of lactams moving from dimethyl dioxirane (DDO) to methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (TFDO). A physical organic chemistry study, which combines the oxidation with two other dioxiranes methyl(fluoromethyl)dioxirane, MFDO, and methyl(difluoromethyl)dioxirane, DFDO, with computational studies, points to a diverse ability of the dioxiranes to either stabilize the homo or the heterolytic pathway.

Kinetic Study of the Reaction of the Phthalimide-N-oxyl Radical with Amides: Structural and Medium Effects on the Hydrogen Atom Transfer Reactivity and Selectivity

A kinetic study of the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions from a series of secondary N-(4-X-benzyl)acetamides and tertiary amides to the phthalimide-N-oxyl radical (PINO) has been carried out. The results indicate that HAT is strongly influenced by structural and medium effects; in particular, the addition of Brønsted and Lewis acids determines a significant deactivation of C-H bonds α to the amide nitrogen of these substrates. Thus, by changing the reaction medium, it is possible to carefully control the regioselectivity of the aerobic oxidation of amides catalyzed by N-hydroxyphthalimide, widening the synthetic versatility of this process.

One-electron oxidation of ferrocenes by short-lived N-oxyl radicals. The role of structural effects on the intrinsic electron transfer reactivities

A kinetic study of the one electron oxidation of substituted ferrocenes (FcX: X = H, COPh, COMe, CO(2)Et, CONH(2), CH(2)OH, Et, and Me(2)) by a series of N-oxyl radicals (succinimide-N-oxyl radical (SINO), maleimide-N-oxyl radical (MINO), 3-quinazolin-4-one-N-oxyl radical (QONO) and 3-benzotriazin-4-one-N-oxyl radical (BONO)), has been carried out in CH(3)CN. N-oxyl radicals were produced by hydrogen abstraction from the corresponding N-hydroxy derivatives by the cumyloxyl radical. With all systems, the rate constants exhibited a satisfactory fit to the Marcus equation allowing us to determine self-exchange reorganization energy values (λ(NO˙/NO(-))) which have been compared with those previously determined for the PINO/PINO(-) and BTNO/BTNO(-) couples. Even small modification of the structure of the N-oxyl radicals lead to significant variation of the λ(NO˙/NO(-)) values. The λ(NO˙/NO(-)) values increase in the order BONO < BTNO < QONO < PINO < SINO < MINO which do not parallel the order of the oxidation potentials. The higher λ(NO˙/NO(-)) values found for the MINO and SINO radicals might be in accordance with a lower degree of spin delocalization in the radicals MINO and SINO and charge delocalization in the anions MINO(-) and SINO(-) due to the absence of an aromatic ring in their structure.

N-demethylation of N,N-dimethylanilines by the benzotriazole N-oxyl radical: evidence for a two-step electron transfer-proton transfer mechanism

The reaction of the benzotriazole N-oxyl radical (BTNO) with a series of 4-X-N,N-dimethylanilines (X = CN, CF(3), CO(2)CH(2)CH(3), CH(3), OC(6)H(5), OCH(3)) has been investigated in CH(3)CN. Product analysis shows that the radical, 4-X-C(6)H(4)N(CH(3))CH(2)(*), is first formed, which can lead to the N-demethylated product or the product of coupling with BTNO. Reaction rates were found to increase significantly by increasing the electron-donating power of the aryl substituents (rho(+) = -3.8). With electron-donating substituents (X = CH(3), OC(6)H(5), OCH(3)), no intermolecular deuterium kinetic isotope effect (DKIE) and a substantial intramolecular DKIE are observed. With electron-withdrawing substituents (X = CN, CF(3), CO(2)CH(2)CH(3)), substantial values of both intermolecular and intramolecular DKIEs are observed. These results can be interpreted on the basis of an electron-transfer mechanism from the N,N-dimethylanilines to the BTNO radical followed by deprotonation of the anilinium radical cation (ET-PT mechanism). By applying the Marcus equation to the kinetic data for X = CH(3), OC(6)H(5), OCH(3) (rate-determining ET), a reorganization energy for the ET reaction was determined (lambda(BTNO/DMA) = 32.1 kcal mol(-1)). From the self-exchange reorganization energy for the BTNO/BTNO(-) couple, a self-exchange reorganization energy value of 31.9 kcal mol(-1) was calculated for the DMA(*+)/DMA couple.
