Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Trichocyanines: a Red-Hair-Inspired Modular Platform for Dye-Based One-Time-Pad Molecular Cryptography

Current molecular cryptography (MoCryp) systems are almost exclusively based on DNA chemistry and reports of cryptography technologies based on other less complex chemical systems are lacking. We describe herein, as proof of concept, the prototype of the first asymmetric MoCryp system, based on an 8-compound set of a novel bioinspired class of cyanine-type dyes called trichocyanines. These novel acidichromic cyanine-type dyes inspired by red hair pigments were synthesized and characterized with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Trichocyanines consist of a modular scaffold easily accessible via an expedient condensation of 3-phenyl- or 3-methyl-2H-1,4-benzothiazines with N-dimethyl- or o-methoxyhydroxy-substituted benzaldehyde or cinnamaldehyde derivatives. The eight representative members synthesized herein can be classified as belonging to two three-state systems tunable through four different control points. This versatile dye platform can generate an expandable palette of colors and appears to be specifically suited to implement an unprecedented single-use asymmetric molecular cryptography system. With this system, we intend to pioneer the translation of digital public-key cryptography into a chemical-coding one-time-pad-like system.

Studies on the interaction of achiral cationic pseudoisocyanine with chiral metal complexes

The effect of chiral metal complexes ([Co(en)(3)]I(3)·H(2)O, cis-[CoBr(NH(3))(en)(2)]Br(2), K[Co(edta)]·2H(2)O and [Ru(phen)(3)](PF(6))(2)) on the polymer-bound J-aggregates in aqueous mixtures of pesudoisocyanine (PIC) iodine and poly(acrylic acid, sodium)(PAAS) have been studied by UV-vis absorption, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. At low concentration, the PIC monomers could self-assemble to form supermolecules by binding to each of the COO(-) groups on the polymer chains through electrostatic interactions. After the addition of chiral metal complexes to the formed PIC-PAAS J-aggregates, we found that only the chiral multiple π-conjugated phenanthroline metal complexes could transfer their metal-centered chiral information to the formed J-aggregates. The chiral J-aggregates showed a characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the visible region of J-band chromophore, and the ICD signals depend on the absolute configuration, concentration of the chiral multiple π-conjugated metal complexes, as well as temperature. More interestingly, the supramolecular chirality of the polymer supported PIC J-aggregates could be memorized even after the addition of an excess opposite chiral complex enantiomers. This is in sharp contrast to the behavior in the high concentrated NaCl induced PIC-J aggregates, in which the optical rotation of a mixture of two enantiomers varies linearly with their ratio.

Interfacial assembly of cinnamoyl-terminated bolaamphiphiles through the air/water interface: headgroup-dependent assembly, supramolecular nanotube and photochemical sewing

A series of cinnamoyl-terminated bolaamphiphiles were synthesized and their assemblies at the air/water interface were investigated. It was found that the assembly behaviour depended on the substituted groups on the cinnamoyl unit. The bolaamphiphile with 4-hydroxycinnamoyl head groups (HCDA) was found to assemble into a supramolecular nanotube, while the others formed only layer-structured films. Moreover, the nanotube formed from HCDA showed supramolecular chirality due to the symmetry breaking. Both the layered films and the nanotubes showed photochemical dimerization upon UV irradiation, which were studied from the UV-Vis, FT-IR spectral and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Interestingly, such dimerization behavior of the cinnamoyl group could be used to stabilize the nanotube of HCDAvia photochemical sewing. During such a process both the supramolecular chirality and the tubular shapes were kept. Remarkably, such a photochemical sewed chiral nanotube could further induce the chirality of an achiral porphyrin derivative assembled on it, and produced the induced chirality without using any chiral molecules.

Langmuir-Blodgett films and chiroptical switch of an azobenzene-containing dendron regulated by the in situ host-guest reaction at the air/water interface

An amphiphilic dendron containing an azobenzene ring at the focal point and the l-glutamate peripheral groups was designed. Its monolayer formation and host-guest reaction with cyclodextrins at the air/water interface and the properties of the transferred Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were investigated. The individual dendron, although without any long alkyl chains, could still form a stable monolayer at the air/water interface because of the good balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts within the molecule. When cyclodextrin (CyD) was added to the subphase, a host-guest reaction occurred in situ at the air/water interface. The inclusion of the focal azobenzene moiety into the cavity of cyclodextrin decreased the packing of the aromatic ring and also led to the diminishment of the molecular area. Both the films formed at the surface of pure water and aqueous cyclodextrins were transferred onto solid substrates. Nanofiber structures were obtained for the film from the water surface as a result of the packing of the azobenzene groups, and circular domains were obtained for the film transferred from the aqueous CyD phases. The film transferred from the water surface showed an exciton couplet in the absorption band of azobenzene, whereas a negative Cotton effect was obtained for the film from CyD subphases. It was found that the supramolecular chirality in the LB film transferred from water was due to the transfer of the molecular chirality to the assemblies whereas that from the CyD subphase was due to the inclusion of azobenzene into the chiral cavity. Interestingly, the film from the water surface was photoinactive, whereas a reversible optical and chiroptical switch could be obtained for the film from the α-CyD subphase. The work provided a way to regulate the assembly and functions of organized molecular films by taking advantage of the interfacial host-guest reaction.
