Photoinduced Aryl Transfer from Imidazolyl-Quinoline π-Conjugated Systems

Aryl transfer between heteroatoms was photochemically available through radical initiation followed by a bimolecular reaction. However, such an excited-state reaction has rarely been reported through a photoinduced intramolecular pathway in the π-conjugated systems. Herein, we found, for the first time, a clean photoinduced intramolecular aryl shift for imidazolyl-quinoline derivatives 2NQ (imidazophenanthrene) and 4NQX (imidazophenanthroline), of which the photoproducts are thermally reversible. Upon light irradiation of the studied compounds in solution, an appreciable blue fluorescence along with a gradual change in color appearance was observed, the photoluminescence and photoconversion quantum yields of which were shown to be competitive in the same excited state. We were able to harness the photoconversion quantum yields of the NQ compounds with facile electronic modifications. These, in combination with time-resolved studies on the NQ compounds, gave an oxygen-insensitive aryl transfer rate within 1-100 ns. The anomalously slow intramolecular reaction rates were further proven to be associated with the ∼5.0 kcal/mol transition free energy. The photoproducts NQ_rs were isolated, identified by X-ray analyses, and also shown to demonstrate anti-Vavilov reverse reactions back to the NQ compounds in the higher-lying excited state. The discovery of photoinduced intramolecular aryl transfer paves a new pathway in the synthetic field, which may also be extended and far-reaching to solar-chemical storage under an appropriate design strategy.

Kinetic Analysis of the Photochemical Paths in Asymmetric Diarylethene Dimer

An asymmetric diarylethene dimer composed of 2- and 3-thienylethene units linked by m-phenylene developed various colors upon UV irradiation via an independent photochromic reaction on each unit. The change in contents and the other photoresponses of the photogenerated four isomers were analyzed using quantum yield for all the possible photochemical paths, i. e., photoisomerization, fluorescence, energy transfer, and the other non-radiative paths. Almost all the rate constants of photochemical paths were calculated using measurable quantum yields and lifetimes. It was found that a significant contribution on photoresponse was the competition between photoisomerization and intramolecular energy transfer. The clear difference was observed in the photoresponses of the dimer and the 1 : 1 mixture solution of the model compounds. The m-phenylene spacer appropriately regulated the rate of energy transfer in the asymmetric dimer, and the spacer enabled isolation of the excited state of the dimer, making the above quantitative analysis possible.

Combined QM (MS-CASPT2)/MM studies on photocyclization and photoisomerization of a fulgide derivative in toluene solution

Photocyclization and photoisomerization of fulgides have been extensively studied experimentally and computationally due to their significant potential applications for example as photoswitches in memory devices. However, the reported excited-state decay mechanisms of fulgides do not include the effects of solvation explicitly to date. Herein, calculations using the high-level MS-CASPT2//CASSCF method were conducted to explore the photoinduced excited-state decay processes of the E_α conformer of a fulgide derivative in toluene with solvent effects treated by implicit PCM and explicit QM/MM models, respectively. Several minima and conical intersections were optimized successfully in and between the S₀ and S₁ states; then, two nonadiabatic excited-state decay channels that could efficiently drive the system to the ground state were proposed based on the excited-state ring-closure and isomerization paths. In addition, we also found that in the ring-closure path, the potential energy surface is essentially barrierless before approaching the conical intersection, while it needs to overcome a small energy barrier along the E → Z photoisomerization path for the nonadiabatic S₁ → S₀ internal conversion process. The present computational results could provide useful mechanistic insights into the photoinduced cyclization and isomerization reactions of fulgide and its derivatives.

Vibrational decoherence induced by ultrafast intramolecular charge separation of an asymmetric bianthryl derivative

Coherent wavepacket oscillation accompanying the ultrafast photoexcited intramolecular charge separation (CS) of 9,9'-bianthryl (BA) and 10-cyano-9,9'-bianthryl (CBA) in a room temperature ionic liquid, N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(methoxyethyl)ammonium tetrafluoroborate (DemeBF₄), was investigated by femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The frequency of the coherent oscillation observed for CBA in nonpolar n-hexane solution (Hex) was 377 cm^-1, while this oscillation was undetectable in DemeBF₄. For BA in DemeBF₄, coherent oscillation with a frequency of 394 cm^-1 was observed, which is similar to that for CBA in Hex. CS of CBA occurs in the ultrashort time range of ≤100 fs, while that of BA occurs in a few picosecond range [E. Takeuchi et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 120, 14502-14512 (2016)]. Hence, the oscillation of CBA in Hex and that of BA in DemeBF₄ are assigned to the molecular vibration in the locally excited state, while this oscillation dephases instantaneously for CBA in DemeBF₄ due to the ultrafast CS and no oscillation was generated in the CS state. This result suggests that the CS reaction is not mediated by a specific intramolecular vibration in the CS state but occurs incoherently through higher levels of multiple vibrational modes.

Stepwise Two-Photon-Induced Electron Transfer from Higher Excited States of Noncovalently Bound Porphyrin-CdS/ZnS Core/Shell Nanocrystals

There has been an increasing amount of interest in stepwise two-photon-absorption (2PA)-induced photochemical reactions because of their extremely lower power thresholds compared to that of the simultaneous process and drastic reaction enhancements in some cases. However, stepwise 2PA-induced photochemical reactions were reported only in single chromophores and covalently bound bichromophores and there are few reports on these reactions in noncovalently bound systems because of weak electronic interactions among chromophores. This study demonstrated the stepwise 2PA-induced electron transfer from higher excited states in noncovalently bound protoporphyrin IX·CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs). The electron transfer from higher excited states of porphyrin to CdS NCs successfully overcomes the activation barrier associated with the wide bandgap ZnS shell, indicating that a high reduction potential can be obtained with the stepwise 2PA process. The concept presented in this study can be applied to various noncovalently bound multichromophore systems to explore nonlinear photoresponses.

Multiphoton-gated cycloreversion reaction of a fluorescent diarylethene derivative as revealed by transient absorption spectroscopy

The one- and two-photon cycloreversion reactions of a fluorescent diarylethene derivative with oxidized benzothiophene moieties were investigated by means of ultrafast laser spectroscopy. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy under the one-photon excitation condition revealed that the excited closed-ring isomer is simply deactivated into the initial ground state with a time constant of 2.6 ns without remarkable cycloreversion, the results of which are consistent with the very low cycloreversion reaction yield (<10-5) under steady-state light irradiation. On the other hand, an efficient cycloreversion reaction was observed under irradiation with a picosecond laser pulse at 532 nm. The excitation intensity dependence of the cycloreversion reaction indicates that a highly excited state attained by the stepwise two-photon absorption is responsible for the marked increase of the cycloreversion reaction, and the quantum yield at the highly excited state was estimated to be 0.018 from quantitative analysis, indicating that the reaction is enhanced by a factor of >1800.

Photochemistry of fac-[Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl]

The photochemistry of fac-[Re(bpy)(CO)₃Cl] (1 a; bpy=2,2′-bipyridine) initiated by irradiation using <330 nm light has been investigated. Isomerization proceeded in THF to give the corresponding mer-isomer 1 b. However, in the presence of a small amount of MeCN, the main product was the CO-ligand-substituted complex (OC-6-24)-[Re(bpy)(CO)₂Cl(MeCN)] (2 c; bpy=2,2′-bipyridine). In MeCN, two isomers, 2 c and its (OC-6-34) form (2 a), were produced. Only 2 c thermally isomerized to produce the (OC-6-44) form 2 b. A detailed investigation led to the conclusion that both 1 b and 2 c are produced by a dissociative mechanism, whereas 2 a forms by an associative mechanism. A comparison of the ultrafast transient UV-visible absorption, emission, and IR spectra of 1 a acquired by excitation using higher-energy light (e.g., 270 nm) and lower-energy light (e.g., 400 nm) gave detailed information about the excited states, intermediates, and kinetics of the photochemical reactions and photophysical processes of 1 a. Irradiation of 1 a using the higher-energy light resulted in the generation of the higher singlet excited state with τ≤25 fs, from which intersystem crossing proceeded to give the higher triplet state (³HES(1)). In THF, ³HES(1) was competitively converted to both the triplet ligand field (³LF) and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (³mLCT) with lifetimes of 200 fs, in which the former is a reactive state that converts to [Re(bpy)(CO)₂Cl(thf)]⁺ (1 c) within 10 ps by means of a dissociative mechanism. Re-coordination of CO to 1 c gives both 1 a and 1 b. In MeCN, irradiation of 1 a by using high-energy light gives the coordinatively unsaturated complex, which rapidly converted to 2 c. A seven-coordinate complex is also produced within several hundred femtoseconds, which is converted to 2 a within several hundred picoseconds.

Efficient photochromic transformation of a new fluorenyl diarylethene: one- and two-photon absorption spectroscopy

Efficient reversible phototransformation of a new diarylethene-fluorene derivative, 1,2-bis(5-(9,9-didecyl-7-nitro-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-2-methylthiophen-3-yl)cyclopent-1-ene (1), was demonstrated in organic media under low-intensity laser excitation. Linear photophysical characterization of 1 was performed at room temperature in solvents of different polarity and viscosity. Significantly, close to unity quantum yield for the cyclization reaction of 1 was shown in nonpolar solutions. The lifetimes of the excited states of the open (OF) and closed (CF) forms of 1 were measured by a femtosecond transient absorption technique, and corresponding values of ∼0.7 and ∼0.9 ps were shown in dichloromethane (DCM), respectively. Degenerate two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of the OF and CF of 1 were obtained over a broad spectral range by the open aperture Z-scan method under 1 kHz femtosecond excitation. The values of 2PA cross sections of the OF in DCM (∼50-70 GM) were found to increase up to 1 order of magnitude (∼600 GM) after cyclization to the CF. The nature of cyclization and cylcoreversion processes were investigated by quantum chemistry with employment of DFT-based methods implemented in the Gaussian'09 program. The potential of 1 for application in optical data storage was shown using poly(methyl methacrylate)-doped films and two-photon fluorescence microscopy readout.

Ultrafast delocalization of cationic states in poly(N-vinylcarbazole) solid leading to carrier photogeneration

Femtosecond measurements of the transient dichroism and near-IR time-resolved spectra revealed the ultrafast delocalization of the cationic state in poly(N-vinylcarbazole), leading to carrier photogeneration.
