Mg(II) and Ca(II) Microsolvation by Ammonia: Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics Studies

We report the structural and energetic features of the Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ cations in ammonia microsolvation environments. Born-Oppenhemier molecular dynamics studies are carried out for [Mg(NH₃)_n]²⁺ and [Ca(NH₃)_n]²⁺ clusters with n = 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 20, and 27 at 300 K based on hybrid density functional theory calculations. We determine binding energies per ammonia molecule and the metal cation solvation patterns as a function of the number of molecules. The general trend for Mg²⁺ is that the Mg-N distances increase as a function of n until the first solvation shell is populated by six ammonia molecules, and then the distances slightly decrease while CN = 6 does not change. For Ca²⁺, the first solvation shell at room temperature is populated by eight ammonia molecules for clusters with more than one solvation shell, leading to a different structure from that of [Ca(NH₃)₆]²⁺ hexamine. The evaporation of NH₃ molecules was found at 300 K only for Mg²⁺ clusters with n ≥ 10; this was not the case for Ca²⁺ clusters. Vibrational spectra are obtained for all of the clusters, and the evolution of the main features is discussed. EXAFS spectra are also presented for the [Mg(NH₃)₂₇(NH₃)₂₇]²⁺ and [Ca(NH₃)₂₇]²⁺ clusters, which yield valuable data to be compared with experimental data in the liquid phase, as previously done for the aqueous solvation of these dications.

Effects of electronic structure on the hydration of PbNO3(+) and SrNO3(+) ion pairs

Hydration of PbNO3(+) and SrNO3(+) with up to 30 water molecules was investigated with infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and with theory. These ions are the same size, yet the IRPD spectra of these ion pairs for n = 2-8 are significantly different. Bands in the bonded O-H region (∼3000-3550 cm(-1)) indicate that the onset of a second hydration shell begins at n = 5 for PbNO3(+) and n = 6 for SrNO3(+). Spectra for [PbNO3](+)(H2O)2-5 and [SrNO3](+)(H2O)3-6 indicate that the structures of clusters with Pb(ii) are hemidirected with a void in the coordinate sphere. A natural bond orbital analysis of [PbNO3](+)(H2O)5 indicates that the anisotropic solvation of the ion is due to a region of asymmetric electron density on Pb(ii) that can be explained by charge transfer from the nitrate and water ligands into unoccupied p-orbitals on Pb(ii). There are differences in the IRPD spectra of PbNO3(+) and SrNO3(+) with up to 25 water molecules attached. IR intensity in the bonded O-H region is blue-shifted by ∼50 cm(-1) in nanodrops containing SrNO3(+) compared to those containing PbNO3(+), indicative of a greater perturbation of the water H-bond network by strontium. The free O-H stretches of surface water molecules in nanodrops containing 10, 15, 20, and 25 water molecules are red-shifted by ∼3-8 cm(-1) for PbNO3(+) compared to those for SrNO3(+), consistent with more charge transfer between water molecules and Pb(ii). These results demonstrate that the different electronic structure of these ions significantly influences how they are solvated.

From lignocellulosic biomass to lactic- and glycolic-acid oligomers: a gram-scale microwave-assisted protocol

The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into platform chemicals is the key step in the valorization of agricultural waste. Of the biomass-derived platform chemicals currently produced, lactic acid plays a particularly pivotal role in modern biorefineries as it is a versatile commodity chemical and building block for the synthesis of biodegradable polymers. Microwave-assisted processes that furnish lactic acid avoid harsh depolymerization conditions while cutting down reaction time and energy consumption. We herein report a flash catalytic conversion (2 min) of lignocellulosic biomass into lactic and glycolic acids under microwave irradiation. The batch procedure was successfully adapted to a microwave-assisted flow process (35 mL min(-1) ), with the aim of designing a scalable process with higher productivity. The C2 and C4 units recovered from the depolymerization were directly used as the starting material for a solvent and catalyst-free microwave-assisted polycondensation that afforded oligomers in good yields.

Formation of Pb(III) intermediates in the electrochemically controlled Pb(II)/PbO₂ system

The formation of lead dioxide PbO(2), an important corrosion product in drinking water distribution systems with lead-bearing plumbing materials, has been hypothesized to involve Pb(III) intermediates, but their nature and formation mechanisms remain unexplored. This study employed the electrochemical (EC) method of rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) and quantum chemical (QC) simulations to examine the generation of intermediates produced during the oxidation of Pb(II) to PbO(2). RRDE data demonstrate that PbO(2) deposition and reduction involves at least two intermediates. One of them is a soluble Pb(III) species that undergoes further transformations to yield immobilized PbO(2) nanoparticles. The formation of this intermediate in EC system is mediated by hydroxyl radicals (OH(•)), as was evidenced by the suppression of intermediates formation in the presence of the OH(•) scavenger para-chlorobenzoic acid. QC simulations confirmed that the oxidation of Pb(II) by OH(•) proceeds via Pb(III) species. These results show that Pb(III) intermediates play an important role in the reactions determining transitions between Pb(II) and Pb(IV) species and could impact lead release in drinking water.
