Abstract
A curious and noticeable structural feature in Schiff bases from 2-aminoaldoses is the fact that imino tautomers arranged equatorially in the most stable ring conformation exhibit a counterintuitive reverse anomeric effect (RAE) in the mutarotational equilibrium, i.e., the most stable and abundant anomer is the equatorial one (β). As shown by our very recent research, this effect arises from the total or partial inhibition of the exo-anomeric effect due to the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the anomeric hydroxyl and the iminic nitrogen in the axial anomer (α). When the Schiff base adopts either an enamine structure or the imino group is protonated, the exo-anomeric effect is restored, and the axial α-anomer becomes the most stable species. Although the intramolecular H-bonding should appropriately be interpreted as a genuine stereoelectronic effect, the magnitude of the RAE could be affected by other structural parameters. Herein and through a comprehensive analysis of benzylidene, cinnamylidene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and anthracene aldehydes, we show the robustness of the RAE effect, which is similar in extent to simple aldehydes screened so far, irrespective of the size and/or hydrophobicity of the substituent at the nitrogen atom.

Abstract
A new functional glycosyl peptidomimetic, featuring a C-glucosyl 1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene backbone in conjugation with two triazolyl phenylalanine moieties on its adjacent C3,4-positions, was readily synthesized via click chemistry. Primary optical measurements indicated that the fluorescence of the ester form of this probe (4) could be selectively quenched by Pb(2+). In contrast, the fluorescence intensity of its analog 5 with released carboxylic groups was uniquely diminished by Cu(2+) with remarkably enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, subsequent addition of cyanide to the methanol solution of the resulting Cu(2+)-5 complex induced its fluorescence recovery with a nanomolar detection limit, which was two orders of magnitude smaller than the regulated concentration limit of CN(-) in drinking water. This suggests the promising applicability of C-glycosyl bis-triazolyl amino acid scaffold in the future design and exploration of sensitive "off-on" Cu(II)-cyanide chemosensors.

Abstract
This paper deals with the self-assembly of the 1:1 complex of two different amphiphiles, namely, a glucosyl-salicyl-imino conjugate (L) and phenylalanine (Phe), forming nanofibers over a period of time through pi...pi interactions. Significant enhancement observed in the fluorescence intensity of L at approximately 423 nm band and the significant decrease observed in the absorbance of the approximately 215 nm band are some characteristics of this self-assembly. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight titration carried out at different time intervals supports the formation of higher aggregates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron miscroscopy results showed the formation of nanofibers for the solutions of L with phenylalanine. In dynamic light scattering measurements, the distribution of the particles extends to a higher diameter range over time, indicating a slow kinetic process of assembly. Similar spectral and microscopy studies carried out with the control molecules support the role of the amino acid moiety over the simple -COOH moiety as well as the side chain phenyl moiety in association with the amino acid, in the formation of these fibers. All these observations support the presence of pi...pi interactions between the initially formed 1:1 complexes leading to the fiber formation. The aggregation of 1:1 complexes leading to fibers followed by the formation of bundles has been modeled by molecular mechanics studies. Thus the fiber formation with L is limited to phenylalanine and not to any other naturally occurring amino acid and hence a polymer composed of two different biocompatible amphiphiles. AFM studies carried out between the fiber forming mixture and proteins resulted in the observation that only BSA selectively adheres to the fiber among the three alpha-helical and two beta-sheet proteins studied and hence may be of use in some medical applications.
