Aluminium complexes containing indolyl-phenolate ligands as catalysts for ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters

A family of aluminium complexes supported by mono-anionic indolyl-phenolate ligands are described. Reactions of indolyl-phenolate based ligand precursors, IndHPh^ROH, with 1.0 or 0.5 equivalents of AlMe₂Cl in toluene afforded aluminium indolyl-phenolate complexes 1-4 and aluminium bis-indolyl-phenolate complexes 5-8 respectively. The molecular structure is reported for 5. Based on the NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies, a 1,3-hydrogen shift could happen from nitrogen to carbon on the five-membered ring of the indolyl group upon reacting with aluminium reagents. These novel aluminium complexes demonstrate catalytic activities toward the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters in the presence of alcohol.

Use of the Nascent Isocyclic Ring to Anchor Assembly of the Full Skeleton of Model Chlorophylls

The chlorophyll skeleton contains a chlorin macrocycle and an annulated fifth (or isocyclic) ring bearing 13¹-oxo and 13²-carbomethoxy substituents. The isocyclic ring has traditionally been constructed by annulation of an intact tetrapyrrole macrocycle. Here, a complementary route employs reaction of a gem-dimethyl-substituted dihydrodipyrrin-carboxaldehyde (AD half) and a dipyrromethane bearing a 3-methoxy-1,3-dioxopropyl group (BC half). A McMurry-like reaction of a 2-(2-nitro-5-oxohexyl)pyrrole was employed to construct the second pyrrole ring in one of three BC halves, whereas the other two were prepared by known routes. An AD half and a BC half were joined by Knoevenagel condensation at room temperature, affording the AD,BC-substituted 2-methoxycarbonyl-2-propenone. The subsequent reaction of three AD, BC-propenones (mixture of Z,E-isomers) in CH₃CN containing InCl₃ and In(OTf)₃ at 80 °C afforded the chlorophyll skeleton as the chloroindium(III) chelate; the reaction proceeds via Nazarov cyclization (to form the isocyclic ring), S_EAr (to construct the macrocycle), and 2e^-,2H⁺ oxidation (to give the aromatic chromophore). The absorption spectra of the complexes closely resemble that of chlorophyll a. The present work exploits the nascent isocyclic ring as an anchor for directed assembly of the AD and BC halves, forming both the chlorin macrocycle and the isocyclic ring in a single-flask transformation.

Synthesis and catalytic application of magnesium complexes bearing pendant indolyl ligands

Three novel indole-based ligand precursors [HIndPh(R), R = methoxy, HIndPh(OMe) (); thiomethoxy, HIndPh(SMe) (); and N,N'-dimethylamino, HIndPh(NMe2) ()] have been synthesized via Sonogashira and cyclization reactions with moderate to high yield. Reactions of these ligand precursors with 0.6 equivalent of Mg(n)Bu2 in THF afforded the magnesium bis-indolyl complexes , respectively. All the ligand precursors and related magnesium complexes have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. The molecular structures are reported for compounds and . Under optimized conditions, compound demonstrates efficient catalytic activities towards the ring opening polymerization of l-lactide and ε-caprolactone in the presence of BnOH.

Coordination chemistry and reactivity of zinc complexes supported by a phosphido pincer ligand

The preparation and characterization of new Zn(II) complexes of the type [(PPP)ZnR] in which R = Et (1) or N(SiMe(3))(2) (2) and PPP is a tridentate monoanionic phosphido ligand (PPP-H = bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)phosphine) are reported. Reaction of ZnEt(2) and Zn[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) with one equivalent of proligand PPP-H produced the corresponding tetrahedral zinc ethyl (1) and zinc amido (2) complexes in high yield. Homoleptic (PPP)(2) Zn complex 3 was obtained by reaction of the precursors with two equivalents of the proligand. Structural characterization of 1-3 was achieved by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, and (31)P) and X-ray crystallography (3). Variable-temperature (1)H and (31)P NMR studies highlighted marked flexibility of the phosphido pincer ligand in coordination at the metal center. A DFT calculation on the compounds provided theoretical support for this behavior. The activities of 1 and 2 toward the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and of L- and rac-lactide were investigated, also in combination with an alcohol as external chain-transfer agent. Polyesters with controlled molecular parameters (M(n), end groups) and low polydispersities were obtained. A DFT study on ring-opening polymerization promoted by these complexes highlighted the importance of the coordinative flexibility of the ancillary ligand to promote monomer coordination at the reactive zinc center. Preliminary investigations showed the ability of these complexes to promote copolymerization of L-lactide and ε-caprolactone to achieve random copolymers whose microstructure reproduces the composition of the monomer feed.

The title phosphine oxide-phosphine, 0.43C(17)H(16)NOP.0.57C(17)H(16)NP, (I)/(II), was obtained as a 0.861 (6):1.139 (6) cocrystallized mixture. Hydrogen bonding between the two constituents leads to the formation of 2:2 solid-state assemblies. Instead of forming the expected simple N,P-chelated system via loss of the N-bound H atom, reaction of 2-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole, (II), with TiCl(4) leads to the formation of the title titanium(IV) complex, [TiCl(4)(C(17)H(16)NP)], (IV), containing a rearranged neutral ligand in which the N-bound H atom moves to one of the pyrrole C atoms, giving a partially unsaturated ring.
