Abstract
Among a plethora of σ-donor ligands available, carbon-centered ones have become essential, in particular with the emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), positioning themselves as credible alternatives to traditional nitrogen- and phosphorus-based systems. Phosphonium ylides representing another class of neutral η1-bonded carbon ligands have also been shown to act as effective Lewis bases. Considering the intrinsic features of the carbene and phosphonium ylide ligands, similar in terms of electronic properties, but different in terms of bonding mode, the design of hybrid systems combining these two types of carbon functionalities appeared to be a natural and exciting challenge. This Perspective comprehensively covers the chemistry of such ligand architectures from synthesis and fundamental aspects to catalytic applications.

Abstract
The reaction of readily available imidazolium-phosphonium salt [MesIm(CH2)3PPh3](OTf)2 with PdCl2 in the presence of an excess of Cs2CO3 afforded selectively in one step the cationic Pd(II) complex [(C,C,C)Pd(NCMe)](OTf) exhibiting an LX2-type NHC-ylide-aryl C,C,C-pincer ligand via formal triple C-H bond activation. The replacement of labile MeCN in the latter by CNtBu and CO fragments allowed to estimate the overall electronic properties of this phosphonium ylide core pincer scaffold incorporating three different carbon-based donor ends by IR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and molecular orbital analysis, revealing its significantly higher electron-rich character compared to the structurally close NHC core pincer system with two phosphonium ylide extremities. The pincer complex [(C,C,C)Pd(CO)](OTf) represents a rare example of Pd(II) carbonyl species stable at room temperature and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The treatment of isostructural cationic complexes [(C,C,C)Pd(NCMe)](OTf) and [(C,C,C)Pd(CO)](OTf) with (allyl)MgBr and nBuLi led to the formation of zwitterionic phosphonium organopalladates [(C,C,C)PdBr] and [(C,C,C)Pd(COnBu)], respectively.

Abstract
Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

Abstract
An air- and moisture-tolerant alternate synthetic pathway to the preparation of a cationic chelated bis(NHC) methylpalladium(ii) complex, [{(MesIm)2CH2}Pd(Me)(NCMe)][PF6], is described. The pathway involves the isolation of a bis(NHC) AgI complex, [{(MesIm)2CH2}2Ag2][PF6]2, via metallation of the corresponding diimidazolium salt with Ag2O followed by carbene transfer to [(COD)PdBrMe]. This new method avoids a previously reported unstable intermediate that displayed rapid decomposition at room temperature, attaining the targeted cationic methylpalladium(ii) complex in high yield. CO/ethylene copolymerisation catalysis trials are reported showing solvent dependent catalyst lifetime and copolymer yields. Preliminary ethylene insertion studies are also outlined revealing possible pathways leading towards catalyst deactivation.

Abstract
A series of methylpalladium(II) complexes with pyrimidine-NHC ligands carrying different aryl- and alkyl substituents R ([((pym)^(NHC-R))PdII(CH3)X] with X = Cl, CF3COO, CH3) has been prepared by transmetalation reactions from the corresponding silver complexes and chloro(methyl)(cyclooctadiene)palladium(II). The dimethyl(1-(2-pyrimidyl)-3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene)palladium(II) complex was synthesized via the free carbene route. All complexes were fully characterized by standard methods and in three cases also by a solid state structure.

Abstract
The application of environmentally benign, cheap, and economically viable oxidation procedures is a key challenge of homogeneous, oxidative alkane functionalization. The typically harsh reaction conditions and the propensity of dioxygen for radical reactivity call for extraordinary robust catalysts. Mainly three strategies have been applied. These are (1) the combination of a catalyst responsible for C-H activation with a cocatalyst responsible for dioxygen activation, (2) transition-metal catalysts, which react with both hydrocarbons and molecular oxygen, and (3) the introduction of very robust main-group element catalysts for C-H functionalization chemistry. Herein, these three approaches will be assessed and exemplified by the reactivity of chelated palladium (N-heterocyclic carbene) catalysts in combination with a vanadium cocatalyst, the methane functionalization by cobalt catalysts, and the reaction of group XVII compounds with alkanes.

Abstract
The development of efficient aerobic oxidation methods remains a challenge for the selective functionalization of C-H bonds in alkanes. Herein we report the development of a C-H functionalization procedure for propane by using a palladium catalyst with chelating bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands in trifluoroacetic acid together with a vanadium co-catalyst. Halides play a decisive role in the reaction. The experimental results are presented together with supporting kinetic data and an isotope effect. The reaction can be run with dioxygen as the oxidant if vanadium salts and halides are present in the reaction mixture. Experimental as well as computational results favor a mechanism involving C-H activation by palladium(II), followed by oxidation to palladium(IV) by bromine.

Abstract
The reactivity of a dimethyl palladium complex supported by a dicarbene chelate (MDC(Mes))PdMe(2) towards CO(2) has been investigated. In the presence of trace H(2)O, this reaction yields the corresponding methyl bicarbonate complex (MDC(Mes))PdMe(O(2)COH), which goes on to give the corresponding κ(2)-carbonato complex upon crystallization (MDC(Mes))Pd(CO(3)). This chemistry, as well as related protonolysis by acetic acid was monitored by a combination of techniques including React-IR spectroscopy.
