Abstract
Heavy metal ions such as cadmium, mercury, lead, and arsenic in the soil cannot be degraded naturally and are absorbed by crops, leading to accumulation in agricultural products, which poses a serious threat to human health. Therefore, establishing a rapid and efficient method for detecting heavy metal ions in agricultural products is of great significance to ensuring the health and safety. In this study, a novel optimized spectrometric method was developed for the rapid and specific colorimetric detection of cadmium ions based on N-(2-Acetamido)-iminodiacetic acid (ADA) and Victoria blue B (VBB) as the chromogenic unit. The safety evaluation of ADA showed extremely low biological toxicity in cultured cells and live animals. The standard curve is y = 0.0212x + 0.1723, R2 = 0.9978, and LOD = 0.08 μM (0.018 mg/kg). The liner concentrations detection range of cadmium is 0.1-10 μM. An inexpensive paper strip detection method was developed with a detection limit of 0.2 μM to the naked eye and a detection time of less than 1 min. The method was successfully used to assess the cadmium content of rice, soybean, milk, grape, peach, and cabbage, and the results correlated well with those determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Thus, our study demonstrated a novel rapid, safe, and economical method for onsite, real-time detection of cadmium ions in agricultural products.

Abstract
Whole-cell biosensors are useful for monitoring heavy metal toxicity in public health and ecosystems, but their development has been hindered by intrinsic trade-offs between sensitivity and specificity. Here, we demonstrated an effective engineering solution by building a sensitive, specific, and high-response biosensor for carcinogenic cadmium ions. We genetically programmed the metal transport system of Escherichia coli to enrich intracellular cadmium ions and deprive interfering metal species. We then selected 16 cadmium-sensing transcription factors from the GenBank database and tested their reactivity to 14 metal ions in the engineered E. coli using the expression of the green fluorescent protein as the readout. The resulting cadmium biosensor was highly specific and showed a detection limit of 3 nM, a linear increase in fluorescent intensities from 0 to 200 nM, and a maximal 777-fold signal change. Using this whole-cell biosensor, a smartphone, and low-tech equipment, we developed a simple assay capable of measuring cadmium ions at the same concentration range in irrigation water and human urine. This method is user-friendly and cost-effective, making it affordable to screen large amounts of samples for cadmium toxicity in agriculture and medicine. Moreover, our work highlights natural gene repositories as a treasure chest for bioengineering.

Abstract
Silica modified imidazolium [smim] based halometallic ionic liquids, [smim][MCl4] (M = Fe, Cu and Zn), were synthesized for the evaluation of acidic and catalytic properties. Among these ILs, [smim][FeCl4]- was used for the preparation of heterogeneous catalyst ([smim][FeCl4]-@Nd2O3) by simple immobilization of IL on Nd2O3 nanoparticles. The structure of [smim][FeCl4]-@Nd2O3 was established by various techniques including FTIR, Raman, UV-vis DRS, powder XRD, SEM/EDX, elemental mapping, TEM, TGA, EPR and XPS analyses. The stability of nano-catalyst, [smim][ FeCl4]-@Nd2O3, was established with the help of zeta potential analysis which showed a value of -40.32 mV lying under the stability range. Potentiometric titration with n-butyl amine was used to evaluate the acidic properties of [smim][MCl4] as well as [smim][FeCl4]-@Nd2O3. The catalytic potential of the material was probed through the one pot synthesis of N-aryl indeno pyrrole derivatives. The results showed excellent performance of the material by producing a high yield (98%) of indeno pyrrole derivatives. A recyclability experiment revealed that the catalyst was efficient in up to five cycles with insignificant loss in catalytic activity. The evaluation of green metrics indicated the sustainability of the present protocol in terms of high atom economy and low E-factor.

Abstract
We prepared the monomer PCDA-HP composed of 5-hydroxy-N 1,N 3-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)isophthalamide (HP) as a cadmium ion tweezer and then polymerized them to form a polydiacetylene (PDA)-based sensor (PDA-HP), which displayed selective and sensitive colorimetric and fluorometric change upon addition of a cadmium ion (Cd2+) at both pH 7.4 and 6.8. The PDA-HP polymer was highly selective for Cd2+ over other metal ions with colorimetric change. In addition, the PDA-HP chemosensor also showed a red fluorescence change in the presence of Cd2+ at both pH 7.4 and 6.8. Naked-eye detection of Cd2+ was accomplished in an aqueous solution through a PDA-based sensor system. Finally, the lowest energy structure of an HP chelator was obtained by the crystal structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
This work reports on glutathione modified Ag nanoparticles (GSH-Ag NPs) as a chemosensor for detecting pyrimethanil in an aqueous medium. The GSH-Ag NPs were expediently obtained by reducing AgNO3 with NaBH4 and modified with glutathione based on the Ag-S bond. The rapid discrimination for pyrimethanil from other pesticides exhibited the high selectivity of GSH-Ag NPs, then the selectivity was proved by 1H NMR, FT-IR and computational simulation. Based on the good properties of localized surface plasmon resonance, the selective recognition was transformed to visible optical signal in colorimetric test. Additionally the quantitative detection was achieved with good sensitivity and could be applied to analyze practical samples. The experimental results have shown a good linear relationship with pyrimethanil concentration ranging from 10 μM to 1 mM and a low detection limit of 3.87 μM.

Abstract
A simple and selective colorimetric sensor based on citrate capped silver nanoparticles (Cit-AgNPs) is proposed for the detection of Thiophanate-methyl (TM) with high sensitivity and selectivity. The method based on the color change of Cit-AgNPs from yellow to cherry red with the addition of TM to Cit-AgNPs that caused a red-shift on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band from 394nm to 525nm due to the hydrogen-bonding and substitution. The density functional theory (DFT) method was also calculated the interactions between the TM and citrate ions. Under the optimized conditions, a linear relationship between the absorption ratio (A525nm/A394nm) and TM concentration was found in the range of 2-100μM with correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.988. The detection limit of TM was 0.12μM by UV-vis spectrometer. Moreover, the applicability of colorimetric sensor is successfully verified by the detection of TM in environmental samples with good recoveries.

Abstract
The spatial confinement of conjugated phenyl rotators is a compulsory requirement for the fluorescence enhancement of aggregation induced emission (AIE) molecules. This work reports a novel spatially confined AIE material by restricting several tetraphenylethylene (TPE) molecules around the primary face of β-cyclodextrin (CD) via a Cu(I) catalytic 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction (click chemistry). The spatial confinement effect was found to significantly enhance the fluorescence emission when compared with a single TPE modified CD. In addition, the emission maxima took place with the dimethyl sulfoxide volume ratio of 30% in a water mixture, which is remarkably different from traditional AIE molecules. Benefiting from the CD’s complexation effect, this material exhibits a selective fluorescence quenching property in certain hydrogenases and can be used as a fluorescence probe for hydrogenase sensing. This demonstrates the potential of the spatially confined AIECD for practical applications.

Abstract
A simple and selective colorimetric sensor thioglycolic acid capped silver nanoparticles (TGA-AgNPs) was developed for the detection of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP). The synthesized TGA-AgNPs were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) techniques. The TGA-AgNPs as a sensor for binding 6-BAP through hydrogen-bonding and π-π bonding that causes large conjugate clusters, resulting in a color change from yellow to reddish orange. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of TGA-AgNPs at 397nm is red-shifted to 510nm, which confirms that 6-BAP induces the aggregation of TGA-AgNPs. Under the optimized conditions, a linear relationship between the absorption ratio (A510nm/A397nm) and 6-BAP concentration was found in the range of 4-26μM. The detection limit of 6-BAP was 0.2μM, which is lower than the other analytical techniques. Moreover, the proposed sensor was successfully applied for the detection of 6-BAP in environmental samples with good recoveries. The proposed assay provides a simple and cost-effective method for the analysis of 6-BAP in vegetable and water samples.

Abstract
A 'two birds, one stone' strategy was developed via a one-pot click reaction to simultaneously prepare a novel cyclodextrin (CD) dimer based aggregation induced emission (AIE) sensor (AIE-DCD) and a monomer based chiral stationary phase (CSP-MCD) for chiral high performance liquid chromatography (CHPLC). AIE-DCD was found to afford satisfactory AIE response for specific detection of Zn2+ with a detection limit of 50 nM. CSP-MCD exhibits excellent enantioseparation ability toward dansyl amino acids, where the resolution of dansyl amino leucine reaches 5.43.

Abstract
Low-level cadmium ion (Cd(2+)) exposure contributes much toward the causation of chronic disease. Due to its low permissible exposure limit, overexposures may occur even in situations where trace quantities of Cd(2+) exist. So far, no effective treatment for Cd(2+) toxicity has been reported. Prevention of further exposure is the most important step in management of patients suggestive of Cd(2+) intoxication. Development of sensors for Cd(2+) is of great interest to ensure early diagnosis and improve management. We propose here a simple, low-cost (0.1$ per sample) yet very sensitive (limit of detection is 3.0 nM) and selective colorimetric assay for rapid (2 min) determination of Cd(2+) based on 5-sulfosalicylic acid functionalized silver nanoparticles (SAA-AgNPs). This method shows excellent selectivity for Cd(2+) over the other 16 metal ions. It is also precise and highly reproducible in determining Cd(2+) in real samples such as tap water, milk, serum, and urine with recoveries ranging from 93 to 110%, indicating the wide practical application to samples suspected of Cd(2+) exposure.

Abstract
Fluorophores based on 4-triazolyl, 7-hydroxy-4-triazolylmethyl, 4-O-triazolylmethyl, and 7-O-triazolylmethyl coumaryl-tagged amino acids and dipeptides were synthesized by copper-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between azido- or alkynyl-functionalized coumarins with alkynyl- or azido-functionalized amino acid and dipeptides in good-to-excellent yields. Steady-state absorption and the fluorescence properties of the synthesized conjugates were studied. The chemical applicability of these amino acid and peptide-based fluorophores was successfully demonstrated by their linear elongation by further tagging them with appropriate C- or N-terminus amino acid.

Abstract
We reported a "turn-on" fluorescent InP nanoprobe for detection of cadmium ions in hydrophobic and hydrophilic media. The method based on the turn-on fluorescence detection of cadmium ions has shown its high selectivity and sensitivity, which are independent of the pH of the tested samples. Also, this approach exhibits an immediate response to cadmium ions, and visualized detection of cadmium ions has further been demonstrated under a UV lamp.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne "click" cycloaddition reaction is an efficient coupling reaction that results in the formation of a triazole ring. The wide range of applicable substrates for this reaction allows the construction of a variety of conjugated systems. The additional function of triazoles as metal-ion ligands has led to the click reaction being used for the construction of optical sensors for metal ions. The triazoles are integral binding elements, which are formed in an efficient modular synthesis. Herein, we review recent examples of triazoles as a metal-binding element in conjugated metal-ion sensors.

Abstract
We demonstrate the application of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (“click” reaction) to couple gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) functionalized with low densities of functional ligands. The ligand coverage on the citrate-stabilized Au NPs was adjusted by the ligand:Au surface atom ratio, while maintaining the colloidal stability of the Au NPs in aqueous solution. A procedure was developed to determine the driving forces governing the selectivity and reactivity of citrate-stabilized and ligand-functionalized Au NPs on patterned self-assembled monolayers. We observed selective and remarkably stable chemical bonding of the Au NPs to the complimentarily functionalized substrate areas, even when estimating that only 1–2 chemical bonds are formed between the particles and the substrate.

Abstract
Quantum dots (QDs) are usually used as fluorescent probe, and they are difficult to use in colorimetric detection. However, in this report carboxyl-functionalized CdS (COF-CdS) QDs were synthesized in aqueous solution for colorimetric detection following a classic method. On the basis of inducing the aggregation of COF-CdS QDs, a simple naked eye colorimetric method with high sensitivity and selectivity was developed for the sensing of Co(2+) ions in aqueous solutions. The Co(2+) ions induced COF-CdS QDs results in a marked enhancement of the UV-vis absorption spectra at 360 nm, and the process was accompanied by a visible color change from colorless to yellowish brown within 5 min, which proves a sensitive detection of Co(2+) ions. The sensing of Co(2+) ions can therefore be easily achieved by a UV-vis spectrophotometer or even by the naked eye. Under the optimized circumstances, this method yields excellent sensitivity (LOD = 0.23 μg mL(-1)) and selectivity toward Co(2+) ions. The calibration plot of (A - A(0)) at 360 nm against concentration of Co(2+) ions was linear over the range from 0.5 to 14 μg mL(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The accuracy and reliability of the method were further ascertained by recovery studies via standard addition method with percent recoveries in the range of 99.63-102.46%. The plausible mechanism for the color change reaction has also been discussed. Our attempt may provide a cost-effective, rapid, and simple solution for the inspection of Co(2+) ions in the presence of a complex matrix from environmental aqueous samples.
