Abstract
The optical properties of coordination complexes with ligands containing nitrogen heterocycles have been extensively studied for decades. One subclass of these materials, metal complexes utilizing substituted pyrazines and quinoxalines as ligands, has been employed in a variety of photochemical applications ranging from photodynamic therapy to organic light-emitting diodes. A vast majority of this work focuses on characterization of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer states in these metal complexes; however, literature reports rarely investigate the photophysics of the parent pyrazine or quinoxaline ligand or perform control experiments utilizing metal complexes that lack low-lying charge-transfer (CT) states in order to determine how metal-atom coordination influences the photophysical properties of the ligand. With this in mind, we examined the steady-state and time-resolved photophysics of 2,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[g]quinoxaline (dpb) and explored how the coordination of ZnX2 (X = Cl-, Br-, I-) affects the photophysical properties of dpb. In dpb, we find that the dominant mode of deactivation from the singlet excited state is intersystem crossing (ISC). Coordination of ZnX2 perturbs the relative energies of the ππ* and nπ* excited states of dpb, leading to drastically different rates of ISC as well as radiative and nonradiative decay in the [Zn(dpb)X2] complexes compared to dpb. These differences in the rates change the dominant singlet-excited-state decay pathway from ISC in dpb to a mixture of ISC and fluorescence in [Zn(dpb)Cl2] and [Zn(dpb)Br2] and to nonradiative decay in [Zn(dpb)I2]. Coordination of ZnX2 and the choice of the halide ligand also have profound effects on the rate constants for excited-state bimolecular reactions, including triplet-triplet annihilation and oxygen quenching. These results demonstrate that metal coordination, even in complexes lacking low-lying CT states, and the choice of the ancillary ligand can dramatically alter the photophysical properties of chromophores containing nitrogen heterocycles.

Abstract
Multidentate carboxylate ligands have been widely used in the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) owing to the rich variety of their coordination modes, which can lead to crystalline products with interesting structures and properties. Two new main-group MOFs, namely, poly[[di-μ-aqua-diaqua(dimethylformamide)[μ7-5,5'-methylenebis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato)]dibarium(II)] trihydrate], {[Ba2(C23H20O8)(C3H7NO)(H2O)4]·3H2O}n or {[Ba2(BTMIPA)(DMF)(H2O)4]·3H2O}n (1), and poly[[diaqua[μ6-5,5'-methylenebis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato)]dilead(II)] 2.5-hydrate], {[Pb2(C23H20O8)(H2O)2]·2.5H2O}n or {[Pb2(BTMIPA)(H2O)2]·2.5H2O}n (2), were prepared by the self-assembly of metal salts with the semi-rigid tetracarboxylic acid ligand 5,5'-methylenebis(2,4,6-trimethylisophthalic acid) (H4BTMIPA). Both structures were characterized by elemental analysis (EA), single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Complex 1 reveals a three-dimensional (3D) flu network formed via bridging tetranuclear secondary building units (SBUs) and complex 2 displays a 3D framework with an sqp topology based on one-dimensional metal chains. The BTMIPA4- ligands adopt a rare coordination mode in 2, although the ligands in both 1 and 2 are X-shaped. The luminescence properties of both complexes were investigated in the solid state.

Abstract
Bidentate organic molecules with imidazole or benzimidazole moieties connected to a rigid 1,3-diphenyladamantane spacer are simple and unique building blocks that facilitate the assembly of supramolecular architectures in the solid state via metal-coordination. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the complexation of bidentate ligand-bearing imidazole moieties with cobalt(II) or cadmium(II) ions in methanol/chloroform produced complexes that showed doubly-interpenetrated two-dimensional (2D) sheets through the formation of coordination bonds between the cobalt or cadmium metal centers and the nitrogen atoms of the imidazole groups. In the complexation of another ligand bearing a bulky benzimidazole group with cobalt(II) ion generated in methanol/chloroform, extended zigzag one-dimensional (1D) chains were formed, indicating that the molecular shape and bulkiness of the ligand design are crucial in the control of coordination polymers. The crystallization solutions were subjected to cold-spray ionization mass spectrometry (CSI-MS), and ion peaks derived from complexes with metal-ligand 1:2 and 1:1 were observed in complexation with ligands bearing the imidazole and benzimidazole moieties, respectively. The metal-ligand ratio in the CSI-MS analysis was identical to that found in the single-crystal X-ray analysis of an independent molecule. In addition, coordination oligomers with large molecular weight were detected as part of the obtained coordination polymers observed by CSI-MS/MS.

Abstract
2,4-Bis(1,3,7-trimethyl-pteridine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione-6-yl)-2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-1H-1,5-benzodiazepine (DLMBZD) has been prepared and its molecular and crystal structures have been determined from spectral and XRD data. The benzodiazepine ligand was reacted with zinc(ii), cadmium(ii) and mercury(ii) chloride, bromide and iodide to give complexes with general formula [M(DLMBZD)X2]. The complexes have been synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The structure of seven complexes has been obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In all the cases, the metal is (2 + 2 + 1)-five-coordinated by two halide ligands, two nitrogen atoms from pyrazine and diazepine rings and a carbonyl oxygen from a pteridine ring. The coordinated-metal environment is a square-based pyramid, with increasing trigonality from Hg(ii) to Zn(ii) complexes. To coordinate the metals, the ligand folds itself, establishing four intramolecular σ-π interactions with the pyrimidine and pyrazine rings. A topological analysis of the electron density using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules and the complexes stability has been performed.

Abstract
Diamondoids are small hydrocarbon molecules which have the same rigid cage structure as bulk diamond. They can be considered the smallest nanoparticles of diamond. They exhibit a mixture of properties inherited from bulk cubic diamond as well as a number of unique properties related to their size and structure. Diamondoids with different sizes and shapes can be separated and purified, enabling detailed studies of the effects of size and structure on the diamondoids' properties and also allowing the creation of chemically functionalized diamondoids which can be used to create new materials. Most notable among these new materials are self-assembled monolayers of diamondoid-thiols, which exhibit a number of unique electron emission properties.

Abstract
In poly[[bis(μ-4,4'-bi-1H-pyrazole-κ(2)N(2):N(2'))bis(3-carboxyadamantane-1-carboxylato-κO(1))cobalt(II)] dihydrate], {[Co(C12H15O4)2(C6H6N4)2]·2H2O}n, (I), the Co(2+) cation lies on an inversion centre and the 4,4'-bipyrazole (4,4'-bpz) ligands are also situated across centres of inversion. In its non-isomorphous cadmium analogue, {[Cd(C12H15O4)2(C6H6N4)2]·2H2O}n, (II), the Cd(2+) cation lies on a twofold axis. In both compounds, the metal cations adopt an octahedral coordination, with four pyrazole N atoms in the equatorial plane [Co-N = 2.156 (2) and 2.162 (2) Å; Cd-N = 2.298 (2) and 2.321 (2) Å] and two axial carboxylate O atoms [Co-O = 2.1547 (18) Å and Cd-O = 2.347 (2) Å]. In both structures, interligand hydrogen bonding [N...O = 2.682 (3)-2.819 (3) Å] is essential for stabilization of the MN4O2 environment with its unusually high (for bulky adamantanecarboxylates) number of coordinated N-donor co-ligands. The compounds adopt two-dimensional coordination connectivities and exist as square-grid [M(4,4'-bpz)2]n networks accommodating monodentate carboxylate ligands. The interlayer linkage is provided by hydrogen bonds from the carboxylic acid groups via the solvent water molecules [O...O = 2.565 (3) and 2.616 (3) Å] to the carboxylate groups in the next layer [O...O = 2.717 (3)-2.841 (3) Å], thereby extending the structures in the third dimension.

Abstract
Four new layered silver(I) organoarsonates, namely, [Ag(3)(L(3))(CN)] (1) (H(2)L(3) = (PhAsO(2)H)(2)O), [Ag(3)(L(4))(CN)] (2) (H(2)L(4) = (2-NO(2)-C(6)H(4)-AsO(2)H)(2)O), [Ag(3)(HL(5))(H(2)L(5))] (3) (H(3)L(5) = 3-NO(2)-4-OH-C(6)H(3)-AsO(3)H(2)) and [Ag(2)(HL(5))] (4), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. During the preparations of 1 and 2, condensation of organoarsonate ligands (H(2)L(1) = Ph-AsO(3)H(2); H(2)L(2) = 2-NO(2)-C(6)H(4)-AsO(3)H(2)) and the decomposition of acetonitrile molecules to cyanide anions occurred. Single crystals of H(2)L(4) ligand and compounds 1-4 were isolated, and their crystal structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. In 1, the one-dimensional (1D) chains based on Ag(I) ions and {L(3)}(2-) anions are further interconnected by CN(-) into two-dimensional (2D) layers. In 2, adjacent Ag(I) ions within the silver(I) organoarsonate layer are further bridged by μ(4)-CN(-) anions with very short Ag···Ag contacts. In 3, the hexanuclear {Ag(6)O(12)} clusters are interconnected by bridging organoarsonate ligands into a silver(I) arsonate hybrid layer. In 4, the right-handed {Ag(4)O(4)} chains are further interconnected by organoarsonate ligands as well as additional Ag-O-Ag bridges into a novel silver(I) arsonate layer. Compounds 1 and 2 display red and orange-red emissions, respectively, which may be assigned to be an admixture of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and metal-centered (4d-5s/5p) transitions perturbed by Ag(I)···Ag(I) interactions. Upon cooling from room temperature to 10 K, compound 1 exhibits interesting temperature-dependent emissions.

Abstract
The inorganic-organic compound Ca(6)(1,3-adamantanedicarboxylate)(4)(CO(3))(OH)(2)(H(2)O)(x) with 0 < x < 15.2 was synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The crystal structure was determined on the basis of high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data and poly-crystal measurements. The crystal structure of Ca(6)(C(12)H(14)O(4))(4)(CO(3))(OH)(2)(H(2)O)(14) is tetragonal, space group I4(1)/amd (141) with a = 29.12 Å, c = 15.85 Å, V = 13,440 Å(3) and Z = 8. The compound is classified as a 3D inorganic hybrid material with a 3-dimensional inorganic framework consisting of Ca and O, connected to 1,3-adamantanedicarboxylate anions. The structure shows hydrophilic channels in a diamond-like network. In between the channels there exist hydrophobic pores with surfaces defined by adamantane cages. The shortest distance between hydrogen atoms from different molecules in these pores is 3.6 Å. The largest hydrophilic cavity has a diameter of 10 Å and the pores connecting the channels have a diameter of 5 Å. In the as-synthesised state these channels are filled with water molecules. Reversible dehydration-rehydration occurs. The dehydrated compound easily takes up water from ambient air.

Abstract
A novel infinite one-dimensional silver cylinder, namely poly[μ-ethylenediamine-μ(5)-(2-sulfanidylbenzoato)-μ(4)-(2-sulfanidylbenzoato)-tetrasilver(I)], [Ag(4)(C(7)H(4)O(2)S)(2)(C(2)H(8)N(2))](n), has been synthesized by one-pot reaction of equivalent molar silver nitrate and 2-mercaptobenzoic acid (H(2)mba) in the presence of ethylenediamine (eda). One Ag atom is located in an AgS(2)NO four-coordinated tetrahedral geometry, two other Ag atoms are in an AgS(2)O three-coordinated T-shaped geometry and the fourth Ag atom is in an AgSNO coordination environment. The two mba ligands show two different binding modes. The μ(2)-N:N'-eda ligand, acting as a bridge, combines with mba ligands to extend the Ag(I) ions into a one-dimensional silver cylinder incorporating abundant Ag···Ag interactions ranging from 2.9298 (11) to 3.2165 (13) Å. Interchain N-H···O hydrogen bonds extend the one-dimensional cylinder into an undulating two-dimensional sheet, which is further packed into a three-dimensional supramolecular framework by van der Waals interactions; no π-π interactions were observed in the crystal structure.

Abstract
A series of functionalized adamantanes: 1,3-bis(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)(tr(2)ad); 1,3,5-tris(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)-(tr(3)ad); 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)adamantanes (tr(4)ad) and 3,5,7-tris(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)-1-azaadamantane (tr(3)ada) were developed as a new family of geometrically rigid polydentate tectons for supramolecular synthesis of framework solids. The coordination compounds were prepared under hydrothermal conditions; their structures reveal a special potential of the triazolyl adamantanes for the generation of highly-connected and open frameworks as well as structures based upon polynuclear metal clusters assembled with short-distance N(1),N(2)-triazole bridges. Complexes [Cd{L}(2)]A·nH(2)O [L = tr(3)ad, A = 2NO(3)(-) (4), CdCl(4)(2-) (5); L = tr(3)ada, A = CdI(4)(2-) (7)] are isomorphous and adopt a layered 3,6-connected structure of CdI(2) type. [{Cu(3)(OH)}(2)(SO(4))(5)(H(2)O)(2){tr(3)ad}(3)]·26H(2)O (6) is a layered polymer based upon Cu(3)(μ(3)-OH) nodes and trigonal tr(3)ad links. In [Cu(3)(OH)(2){tr(3)ada}(2)(H(2)O)(4)](ClO(4))(4) (8), [Cu(2){tr(3)ada}(2)(H(2)O)(3)](SO(4))(2)·7H(2)O (9) and [Cd(2){tr(3)ada}(3)]Cl(4)·28H(2)O (10) (UCl(3)-type net) the organic tripodal ligands bridge polynuclear metal clusters. Complexes [Ag{tr(4)ad}]NO(3)·3.5H(2)O (11) and [Cu{tr(4)ad}(H(2)O)](ClO(4))(2)·3H(2)O (12) have 3D SrAl(2)-type frameworks with the metal ions and adamantane tectons as topologically equivalent tetrahedral nodes, while in [Cd(3)Cl(6){tr(4)ad}(2)]·9H(2)O (13) the ligands bridge trinuclear six-connected Cd(3)Cl(6)(μ-tr)(4)(tr)(2) clusters. In the compounds [Cd(2){tr(2)ad}(4)(H(2)O)(4)](CdBr(4))(2)·2H(2)O (2) and [Cd{tr(2)ad}(4){CdI(3)}(2)]·4H(2)O (3) the bitopic ligands provide simple links between the metal ions, while in [Ag(2){tr(2)ad}(2)](NO(3))(2)·2H(2)O (1) the ligand is tetradentate and generates a 3D framework.

Abstract
Four new compounds, [Cd(5-aip)(bpy)]·1.5DMA (1), [Cu(5-aip)(bpy)]·1.3DMA (2), [Co(5-aip)(bpy)]·1.6DMA (3), and [Cd(5-aip)(bpy)(0.5)(H(2)O)]·1.3DMA (4), based on 5-aminoisophthalic acid and 4,4'-bipyridine, have been synthesized by the solvothermal method and structurally determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1-3 are structurally similar and show non-interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) pillar-layer frameworks, while compound 4 displays a two-dimensional (2D) (3,4)-connected parallel non-interpenetrating architecture. In all these compounds, 1D rectangular channels are observed and the ligand 5-aminoisophthalic acid exhibits three kinds of coordination modes. Furthermore, 1 displays a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation when immersed in a methanol solution. More significantly, 1 can absorb and deliver I(2) molecules by means of its channels, and could induce a reversible luminescent transformation from quenching to the initial state. The luminescent properties of 1 and 4 have also been studied.
