Abstract
The formation of molecular hydrogen as well as the possibility of using coinage metal hydrides as a prospective complex to produce hydrogen was presented in this work. Therefore, the reactions involving the interaction between two coinage metal hydrides, MH (M=Cu, Ag and Au, homo and heterodimers), were studied. The free energy profiles corresponding to aforementioned complexation were analysed by means of ab initio methods of quantum chemistry. The characteristics of these intermediates, final complexes and the electron density properties of the established interactions were discussed.

Abstract
The hexagonal close packed surface of gold shows a 22 × 3 "herringbone" surface reconstruction which makes it unique among the (111) surfaces of all metals. This long-range energetically favored dislocation pattern appears in response to the strong tensile stress that would be present on the unreconstructed surface. Adsorption of molecular and atomic species can be used to tune this surface stress and lift the herringbone reconstruction. Here we show that herringbone reconstruction can be controllably lifted in ultrahigh vacuum at cryogenic temperatures by precise hot electron injection in the presence of hydrogen molecules. We use the sharp tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) for charge carrier injection and characterization of the resulting chain nanostructures. By comparing STM images, rotational spectromicroscopy and ab initio calculations, we show that formation of gold atomic chains is associated with release of gold atoms from the surface, lifting of the reconstruction, dissociation of H2 molecules, and formation of surface hydrides. Gold hydrides grow in a zipper-like mechanism forming chains along the [11̅0] directions of the Au(111) surface and can be manipulated by further electron injection. Finally, we demonstrate that Au(111) terraces can be transformed with nearly perfect terrace selectivity over distances of hundreds of nanometers.

Abstract
Recent scanning tunneling hydrogen microscopy (STHM) experiments on PTCDA (perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-dianhydride)/Au(111) have shown unprecedented intramolecular and intermolecular spatial resolution. The origin of this resolution is studied using an accurate STHM theoretical simulation technique that includes a detailed description of the electronic structure of both the tip and sample. Our results show that H2 molecules are dissociated on the Au tip; the adsorbed H atoms change the density of states at the Fermi level (E(F)) of the tip, increasing its p-orbital character and reducing the s-orbital contribution. Also, due to the interaction with the H-decorated tip, E(F) is shifted to the middle of the PTCDA lowest unoccupied molecular orbital peak, increasing dramatically the density of states of the sample at E(F). These effects give rise to the enhanced STHM resolution.

Abstract
A global potential energy surface is obtained for the ground state of the endoergic Au((2)S)+H(2)(X (1)Sigma(g) (+))-->AuH((1)Sigma(+))+H((2)S) reaction. The global potential is obtained by fitting highly correlated ab initio calculations on the system, using relativistic pseudopotential for the gold atom. Several electronic states are calculated correlating with Au((2)S)+H(2), Au((2)D)+H(2), and H(2), Au((2)P)+H(2) asymptotes. These states show several conical intersections and curve crossings along the minimum energy reaction path which are analyzed in detail. One of them gives rise to an insertion well in which there are important contributions from the Au((2)D) and Au((2)P) states of gold, which is interesting because it is analog to the deep chemisorption well appearing in larger gold clusters. Quantum wave packet and quasiclassical trajectory dynamical calculations performed for the reaction at zero total angular momentum are in good agreement, provided that a Gaussian binning method is used to account for the zero-point energy of products. Finally, integral and differential cross sections are calculated for the reaction with quasiclassical trajectories. Two different reaction mechanisms are found, one direct and the second indirect, in which the Au atom inserts in between the two hydrogen atoms because of the existence of the insertion well discussed above.
