Abstract
Maintaining lipid asymmetry across membrane leaflets is critical for functions like vesicular traffic and organelle homeostasis. However, a lack of molecular-level understanding of the mechanisms underlying membrane fission and fusion processes in synthetic systems precludes their development as artificial analogs. Here, we report asymmetry induction of a bilayer membrane formed by an extended π-conjugated molecule with oxyalkylene side chains bearing terminal tertiary amine moieties (BA1) in water. Autogenous protonation of the tertiary amines in the periphery of the bilayer by water induces anisotropic curvature, resulting in membrane fission to form vesicles and can be monitored using time-dependent spectroscopy and microscopy. Interestingly, upon loss of the induced asymmetry by extensive protonation using an organic acid restored bilayer membrane. The mechanism leading to the compositional asymmetry in the leaflet and curvature induction in the membrane is validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Studies extended to control molecules having changes in hydrophilic (BA2) and hydrophobic (BA3) segments provide insight into the delicate nature of molecular scale interactions in the dynamic transformation of supramolecular structures. The synergic effect of hydrophobic interaction and the hydrated state of BA1 aggregates provide dynamicity and unusual stability. Our study unveils mechanistic insight into the dynamic transformation of bilayer membranes into vesicles.

Abstract
In recent years, photoresponsive supramolecular self-assemblies have shown great potential in various fields. However, it is still a great challenge to integrate and control multiple photoresponsive behaviors in a self-assembled system. Herein, we design a novel cyanostilbene-based molecule VOE. In the aggregated state, it has different photoresponsive behaviors under different morphologies. When VOE molecules are dispersed in a 70% H2O/THF mixture, two different assembly morphologies are obtained as the aging time changes. One is weakly emissive nanoparticles with amorphous packing arrangements, and the other is highly emissive microbelts with well-ordered stacking modes. When they are irradiated with blue light (420 nm), the disordered assembly structure of nanoparticles leads to a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction, while a Z/E isomerization reaction occurs in ordered packed microbelts. Therefore, we can use a self-assembled system to generate two different morphologies, enabling completely different emissions and photoresponsive behaviors.

Abstract
Tetraphenylethylene carboxylate (TPEC) aggregates are transformed by ice confinement, which is controlled by the initial concentration of sucrose employed as a cryoprotectant and temperature. The freezing of aqueous sucrose leads to the formation of micro- or nanoliquid phase confined in ice. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) of tetraphenylethylene carboxylate (TPEC) in the ice-confined space is explored using fluorescence spectroscopy and lifetime measurements. The characteristics of AIE in the ice-confined space strongly depend on the initial sucrose concentration and temperature, which determine the size of the liquid phase. The AIE of TPEC in the ice-confined space can be classified into three regimes in terms of spectroscopic features. Loosely packed J aggregates of TPEC are formed in the microliquid phase (>2 μm). The fluorescence intensity increases, and the wavelength is hypsochromically shifted with a decrease in the size of the space, indicating that the molecular arrangement in the aggregate depends on the space size. The fluorescence lifetimes indicate polydisperse, loosely packed aggregation. No further change in aggregate structure is observed once the liquid phase size is decreased to ∼2 μm, and a spectroscopically identical structure is maintained upon further reduction of the space size to ∼0.5 μm. The molecular arrangement in the aggregate is independent of the space size in this regime. However, when the size of the space becomes smaller than ∼0.5 μm, the aggregate structure again starts to change into a more tightly packed aggregate and a hypsochromic shift of the fluorescence wavelength occurs again. The fluorescence lifetime indicates monodispersed aggregation in this submicrospace.

Abstract
The self-organization and resistive memory performances of a series of newly synthesized water-soluble amphiphilic carbazole derivatives have been explored. Temperature-dependent UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy has been conducted to study the isodesmic self-assembly mechanism of the carbazole-containing compounds. This class of compounds also exhibits interesting lower critical solution temperature properties, which are sensitive to concentration and ionic additives. One of the compounds has been solution-processed and utilized as an active material in the engineering of resistive memory devices, exhibiting a switching voltage of about 3.9 V, a constant ON/OFF current ratio of 106 , and a long retention time of 104 s. The present work demonstrates the versatile potential applications of water-soluble amphiphilic carbazole-containing compounds in supramolecular chemistry and resistive memory devices.

Abstract
In the specific context of condensed media, the significant and increasing recent interest in the α-cyanostilbene (CS) motif [ArCHC(CN)Ar] is relevant. These compounds have shown remarkable optical features in addition to interesting electrical properties, and hence they are recognized as very suitable and versatile options for the development of functional materials. This progress report is focused on current and future use of CS structures and molecular assemblies with the aim of exploring and developing for the next generations of functional materials. A critical selection of illustrative materials that contain the CS motif, including relevant subfamilies such as the dicyanodistyrylbenzene and 2,3,3-triphenylacrylonitrile shows how, driven by the self-assembly of CS blocks, a variety of properties, effects, and possibilities for practical applications can be offered to the scientific community, through different rational routes for the elaboration of advanced materials. A survey is provided on the research efforts directed toward promoting the self-assembly of the solid state (polycrystalline solids, thin films, and single crystals), liquid crystals, nanostructures, and gels with multistimuli responsiveness, and applications for sensors, organic light-emitting diodes, organic field effect transistors, organic lasers, solar cells, or bioimaging purposes.

Abstract
We synthesized two different amphiphilic small molecules 1 and 2 by attaching the same oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) unit to the same dicyanodistyrylbenzene (DCS) fluorophore but at different positions. These molecules self-assemble into nanoparticles in water and show lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at 26 and 58 °C, respectively. Upon heating, the transition of hydrophilic coils to hydrophobic globules of the OEG unit leads to the change in the stacking structure of the luminescent DCS cores. As a result, it shows significant ratiometric fluorescence color changes from excimeric yellow emission to monomer-dominated green emission. Interestingly, the coassembly of 1 and 2 exhibits single transition temperature between the transition temperatures of the two components. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the transition temperature of the coassembly is delicately tuned over 26-58 °C by varying the molar mixing ratio of them.

Abstract
In this paper, a new bolaamphiphile bearing 1-cyano-1,2-bis(phenyl)ethene (CNBE) has been synthesized. The self-assembly of this molecule in aqueous solution is concentration-dependent. Two distinct morphologies, monomolecular layered lamellas and helical nanofibres have been obtained with the as-prepared molecular configuration. Note worthily, the helical nanofibres provide an experimental evidence for the pure twisted structure in the liquid crystals, which is theoretically proposed by De Gennes. Due to the photoisomerization of CNBE, the self-assembled nanostructures undergo morphological changes upon irradiation. Although various nanostructures were observed in the solution-state, only nanofibres were obtained after the solution was cast on a substrate, which was attributed to a strong dewetting effect. This work illustrates concentration-dependent and light-responsive self-assembly and provides a novel avenue for fabricating smart soft materials.

Abstract
The first total synthesis of the mitotic spindle poison nostodione A is described. The inherent oxidative sensitivity of indoles is utilized for a late introduction of a second carbonyl to the cyclopent[b]indole-2-one system. The tricyclic system is prepared from indole-3-acetic acid and O-silylated 4-ethynylphenol, using a stereoselective intramolecular reductive Heck cyclization as the key transformation.

Abstract
1,3,5-Triureabenzene derivatives carrying alkyl (C(n)) and poly(ethylene glycol) (Eg(m)) chains C(n)Eg(3) (1, 2, and 3, n = 6, 7, and 8, respectively) and C(n)N(X)Eg(m) (4 and 5, X = M (methyl), n = 6 and 8, respectively, m = 3; 6 and 7, X = T (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl, TEMPO), n = 6, m = 3 and 6, respectively) were prepared. All compounds in aqueous solutions exhibited the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phenomena unique for small-sized molecules and formed self-assemblies above the transition temperature, T(t), of the LCST. Only compound 3 formed a hydrogel with a minimum gelation concentration of 0.5 mM (0.05 wt %). In 1.0 mM aqueous solution, the T(t) values were determined to be in the range of 12-40 °C. In addition, the T(t) values for 4-7 containing tertiary amine also responded to the solution pH with high sensitivity. The LCST behaviors for all compounds were reversible in the cycles of warming and cooling. The water proton relaxivities, r(1), for 6 and 7 carrying TEMPO were altered below and above T(t) and were largely reduced by the formation of self-assemblies above T(t). Compound 6 showed r(1) values at 25 °C of 0.92 and 0.23 mM(-1) s(-1) at pH 7.0 and 6.0, respectively. In transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, globular particles with polydispersity were observed, and their average hydrodynamic diameters (D(H)) were determined to be in the range of 2400-730 nm by dynamic light scattering. In the TEM and scanning electron microscopy images of a xerogel sample of 3, bundles of fibers with a diameter of ca. 10 nm and a network structure, respectively, were observed.

Abstract
A polyelectrolyte-assisted reprecipitation method is developed to fabricate nanoparticles of highly soluble molecules. The approach is demonstrated by using a zwitterionic diaminodicyanoquinodimethane molecule bearing remote ammonium functionalities with high solubility in water as well as organic solvents. Nanoparticles are prepared by injecting aqueous solutions of this compound containing an optimum concentration of sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) into methanol. The strong fluorescence exhibited by the compound in the aggregated state is reflected in the enhanced fluorescence of the polyelectrolyte complex in water. The nanoparticles formed in the colloidal state manifest even stronger fluorescence, which leads to an overall enhancement by about 90 times relative to aqueous solutions of the pure compound. The conditions for achieving the emission enhancement are optimized and a model for the molecular-level interactions and aggregation effects is developed through a range of spectroscopy, microscopy, and calorimetry investigations and control experiments.

Abstract
Triangular-shaped oligo(phenylene ethynylene) amphiphiles 1a and 1b decorated in their periphery with two- and four-branched hydrophilic triethyleneglycol dendron wedges, have been synthesized and their self-assembling properties in solution and onto surfaces investigated. The steric demand produced by the dendritic substituents induces a face-to-face rotated pi stacking of the aromatic moieties. Studies on the concentration and temperature dependence confirm this mechanism and provide binding constants of 1.2 x 10(5) and 1.7 x 10(5) M(-1) in acetonitrile for 1a and 1b, respectively. Dynamic and static light scattering measurements complement the study of the self-assembly in solution and demonstrate the formation of rod-like supramolecular structures in aqueous solution. The nanofibers formed in solution can be efficiently transferred onto surfaces. Thus, TEM images reveal the presence of strands of various thickness, with the most common being several micrometers long and with diameters of around 70 nm. Some of these nanofibers present folded edges that are indicative of their ribbon-like nature. Interestingly, compound 1b can also form thick filaments with a rope-like appearance, which points to a chiral arrangement of the fibers. AFM images under highly diluted conditions also reveal long fibers with height profiles that fit well with the molecular dimensions calculated for both amphiphiles. Finally, we have demonstrated the intercalation of the hydrophobic dye Disperse Orange 3 within the filaments and its subsequent release upon increasing the temperature.
