Abstract
The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of vanadium pyridonate complexes are described. Vanadium(III) pyridonate complexes were accessed through protonolysis and reduction of a tetrakis(amido)vanadium(IV) starting material. Bis(pyridonate) vanadium(IV) precursors could be isolated depending on the amount of proteoligand added. The targeted vanadium(III) species tend to form dimers, but monomeric complexes can be achieved in the presence of neutral donors such as amines or pyridine derivatives or through the use of sterically demanding proligands. The reduction process is proposed to involve dimeric intermediates and be mediated by the amine released from protonolysis, thereby forming the corresponding imine as a byproduct. Isolated amine complexes of vanadium(III) are presented. In contrast, bis(amidate)vanadium(IV) complexes were not found to undergo a similar reduction. This work informs on design principles for the synthesis and application of new vanadium pyridonate catalysts for transformations involving dimerization and PCET for changes in oxidation state.

Abstract
The trinuclear zirconium imido complex [{LZr(NMe2)}3] (2, L = C5Me4CH2CH2N) was synthesized by amine elimination between Zr(NMe2)4 and endo-olefinic isomers of (tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)ethanamine (LH3) (1). To study the fundamental reactivity of the trizirconium system, reactions of 2 with primary amines were examined. Selective incorporations of the primary amines were observed, depending on steric and electronic natures of the amine substrates. The amine-incorporated complexes [(LZrNHR)(LHZrNHR)(LHZr)(μ-NHR)(μ3-NR)] (3, R = Pr, Et), [(LZrNHR)2(LHZr)(μ-NR)] (4, R = Pr, i-Bu), [(LZr)2(LZrNMe2)(μ-NR)] (5, R = neo-Pen), and [(LZr)(LZrNHAr)(LH2Zr)(μ-NAr)2] (6, Ar = Ph, C6H4-4-Br, C6H4-4-OMe) were structurally characterized by NMR and XRD analysis and showed several coordination modes of the substrate nitrogen ligands: i.e., terminal amides, bridging amides, and bridging imides but not terminal imides. Thermolysis of a mixture of 3 and 4 led to C-H bond activation, giving rise to the zirconaaziridines [{LZr(η2-NCHR)}(LZr)(LHZr)(μ-NHCH2R)] (12, R = Et, Me). Complex 2 proved to be a competent precatalyst in the hydroamination of the aminoalkynes (H2NCH2CR12CH2C≡CR2) (13, R1 = H, R2 = Bu, Ph, t-Bu; 14, R1 = Me, R2 = Et, Ph). Stoichiometric or semicatalytic reactions of 2 and the aminoalkynes were studied to explore the reactivity of in situ formed Zr3 species.

Abstract
Titanium, as the second most abundant transition metal in the earth's crust, lends itself as a sustainable and inexpensive resource in catalysis. Its nontoxicity and biocompatibility are also attractive features for handling and disposal. Titanium has excelled as a catalyst for a broad range of transformations, including ethylene and α-olefin polymerizations. However, many reactions relevant to fine chemical synthesis have preferrentially employed late transition metals, and reactive, inexpensive early transition metals have been largely overlooked. In addition to promising reactivity, titanium complexes feature more robust character compared with some other highly Lewis-acidic metals such as those found in the lanthanide series. Since the advent of modulating ligand scaffolds, titanium has found use in a growing variety of reactions as a versatile homogeneous catalyst. These catalytic transformations include hydrofunctionalization reactions (adding an element-hydrogen (E-H) bond across a C-C multiple bond), as well as the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters, all of which are atom-economic transformations. Our investigations have focused on tight bite angle monoanionic N,O-chelating ligands, forming four-membered metallacycles. These ligand sets, including amidates, ureates, pyridonates, and sulfonamidates, have flexible binding modes offering a range of stable and reactive intermediates necessary for catalytic activity. Additionally, the simple form of these ligands leads to easily prepared proligands, along with facile tuning of steric and electronic factors. A sterically bulky titanium amidate complex has proven to be a leading catalyst for the selective formation of anti-Markovnikov addition products via intermolecular hydroamination of terminal alkynes, while sterically less demanding titanium pyridonates have opened the path to the selective formation of amine substituted cycloalkanes via the intramolecular hydroaminoalkylation of aminoalkenes over the competing hydroamination pathway. Sulfonamidates have boosted reactivity for hydrofunctionalization and polymerization reactions compared with amide ligands not bearing a sulfonyl group. N,O-Chelated titanium complexes have been used to synthesize ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene and have been utilized in the challenging task of realizing equal incorporation of two different cyclic esters in a random ring-opening copolymerization. These discrete complexes have allowed for careful study of fundamental coordination chemistry and stoichiometric organometallic investigations. With inexpensive starting materials and modular ligands, titanium N,O-chelated complexes are well-suited to address the challenges of achieving greener chemical processes while accessing useful reaction manifolds for sustainable synthesis.

Abstract
A comprehensive computational examination of alternatively plausible mechanistic pathways for the intramolecular hydroamination (HA) of aminoalkenes utilising a recently reported novel phenylene-diamine aluminium amido compound is presented. On the one hand, a proton-assisted concerted N-C/C-H bond-forming pathway to afford the cycloamine in a single step can be invoked, and, on the other, a stepwise σ-insertive pathway that involves a relatively fast, reversible migratory olefin 1,2-insertion step linked to a less rapid, irreversible Al-C alkyl bond protonolysis. The present study, which employs a sophisticated and reliable computational methodology, supports the prevailing mechanism to be a stepwise σ-insertive pathway. The predicted effective barrier for turnover-limiting aminolysis compares favourably with reported catalytic performance data. Non-competitive kinetic demands militates against the operation of the concerted proton-assisted pathway, which describes N-C bond-forming ring closure triggered by concomitant amino proton delivery at the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C linkage evolving through a six-centre transition state structure. The valuable insights into mechanistic intricacies of aluminium-mediated intramolecular HA reported herein will help guide the rational design of group 13 metal-based HA catalysts.

Abstract
Chemoselectivity of intramolecular hydroaminoalkylation over hydroamination has been achieved with a bis(3-phenyl-2-pyridonate) titanium complex. Primary aminoalkenes are selectively α-alkylated by C-H functionalization adjacent to nitrogen to access five- and six-membered cycloalkylamines with a good substrate-dependent diastereoselectivity of up to 19:1.

Abstract
Neutral Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) dimethyl complexes stabilized by unsymmetrical dianionic {N,C,N'} pincer ligands have been prepared from their corresponding bis-amido complexes upon treatment with AlMe3. Their structure consists of a central σ-bonded aryl donor group (C) capable of forming robust M-C bonds with the metal center, enforced by the synergic effect of both the coordination of peripheral donor groups (N) and the chelating rigid structure of the {N,C,N} ligand framework. Such a combination translates into systems having a unique balance between stability and reactivity. These Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) dimethyl complexes were converted in situ into cationic species [M(IV){N(-),C(-),N}Me][B(C6F5)4] which are active catalysts for the room temperature (r.t.) intramolecular hydroamination/cyclization of primary and secondary aminoalkenes as well as for the high temperature ethylene-1-octene copolymerizations.

Abstract
Neutral Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) diamido complexes stabilized by unsymmetrical dianionic N,C,N' pincer ligands have been prepared through the simplest and convenient direct metal-induced Caryl-H bond activation. Simple ligand modification has contributed to highlight the non-innocent role played by the donor atom set in the control of the cyclometallation kinetics. The as-prepared bis-amido catalysts were found to be good candidates for the intramolecular hydroamination/cyclization of primary aminoalkenes. The ability of these compounds to promote such a catalytic transformation efficiently (by providing, in some cases, fast and complete substrate conversion at room temperature) constitutes a remarkable step forward toward catalytic systems that can operate at relatively low catalyst loading and under milder reaction conditions. Kinetic studies and substrate-scope investigations, in conjunction with preliminary DFT calculations on the real systems, were used to elucidate the effects of the substrate substitution on the catalyst performance and to support the most reliable mechanistic path operative in the hydroamination reaction.

Abstract
Simple chiral proligands have been synthesized from inexpensive chiral starting materials. These amidate and ureate ligands support zirconium complexes that successfully catalyze intramolecular hydroamination with up to 26% ee. Several elements necessary for successful ligand design are highlighted and discussed. In particular, the strict control of metal geometry through multidentate tethered ligands is determined to be an essential aspect of future ligand development.
