Synthesis of transition metal isocyanide compounds from carbonyl complexes via reaction with Li[Me3SiNR]

Tuning π-Acceptor/σ-Donor Ratio of the 2-Isocyanoazulene Ligand: Non-Fluorinated Rival of Pentafluorophenyl Isocyanide and Trifluorovinyl Isocyanide Discovered

Isocyanoazulenes (CNAz) constitute a relatively new class of isocyanoarenes that offers rich structural and electronic diversification of the organic isocyanide ligand platform. This article considers a series of 2-isocyano-1,3-X₂-azulene ligands (X = H, Me, CO₂Et, Br, and CN) and the corresponding zero-valent complexes thereof, [(OC)₅Cr(2-isocyano-1,3-X₂-azulene)]. Air- and thermally stable, X-ray structurally characterized 2-isocyano-1,3-dimethylazulene may be viewed as a non-benzenoid aromatic congener of 2,6-dimethyphenyl isocyanide (2,6-xylyl isocyanide), a longtime “workhorse” aryl isocyanide ligand in coordination chemistry. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic {Cr–CNAz bond distances}, cyclic voltametric {E_1/2(Cr^0/1+)}, ¹³C NMR {δ(¹³CN), δ(¹³CO)}, UV-vis {dπ(Cr) → pπ*(CNAz) Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer}, and FTIR {ν_N≡C, ν_C≡O, k_C≡O} analyses of the [(OC)₅Cr(2-isocyano-1,3-X₂-azulene)] complexes provided a multifaceted, quantitative assessment of the π-acceptor/σ-donor characteristics of the above five 2-isocyanoazulenes. In particular, the following inverse linear relationships were documented: δ(¹³CO_trans) vs. δ(¹³CN), δ(¹³CO_cis) vs. δ(¹³CN), and δ(¹³CO_trans) vs. k_C≡O,trans force constant. Remarkably, the net electron withdrawing capability of the 2-isocyano-1,3-dicyanoazulene ligand rivals those of perfluorinated isocyanides CNC₆F₅ and CNC₂F₃.

Synthesis and Application of a Perfluorinated Ammoniumyl Radical Cation as a Very Strong Deelectronator

The perfluorinated dihydrophenazine derivative (perfluoro-5,10-bis(perfluorophenyl)-5,10-dihydrophenazine) ("phenazine^F ") can be easily transformed to a stable and weighable radical cation salt by deelectronation (i.e. oxidation) with Ag[Al(OR^F )₄ ]/ Br₂ mixtures (R^F =C(CF₃ )₃ ). As an innocent deelectronator it has a strong and fully reversible half-wave potential versus Fc⁺ /Fc in the coordinating solvent MeCN (E°'=1.21 V), but also in almost non-coordinating oDFB (=1,2-F₂ C₆ H₄ ; E°'=1.29 V). It allows for the deelectronation of [Fe^III Cp*₂ ]⁺ to [Fe^IV (CO)Cp*₂ ]²⁺ and [Fe^IV (CN-^t Bu)Cp*₂ ]²⁺ in common laboratory solvents and is compatible with good σ-donor ligands, such as L=trispyrazolylmethane, to generate novel [M(L)_x ]ⁿ⁺ complex salts from the respective elemental metals.

First π-linker featuring mercapto and isocyano anchoring groups within the same molecule: Synthesis, heterobimetallic complexation and self-assembly on Au(111)

Mercapto (-SH) and isocyano (-N≡C) terminated conducting π-linkers are often employed in the ever-growing quest for organoelectronic materials. While such systems typically involve symmetric dimercapto or diisocyano anchoring of the organic bridge, this article introduces the chemistry of a linear azulenic π-linker equipped with one mercapto and one isocyano terminus. The 2-isocyano-6-mercaptoazulene platform was efficiently accessed from 2-amino-6-bromo-1,3-diethoxycarbonylazulene in four steps. The 2-N≡C end of this 2,6-azulenic motif was anchrored to the [Cr(CO)₅] fragment prior to formation of its 6-SH terminus. Metalation of the 6-SH end of [(OC)₅Cr(η¹-2-isocyano-1,3-diethoxycarbonyl-6-mercaptoazulene)] (7) with Ph₃PAuCl, under basic conditions, afforded X-ray structurally characterized heterobimetallic Cr⁰/Au^I ensemble [(OC)₅Cr(μ-η¹:η¹-2-isocyano-1,3-diethoxycarbonyl-6-azulenylthiolate)AuPPh₃] (8). Analysis of the ¹³C NMR chemical shifts for the [(NC)Cr(CO)₅] core in a series of the related complexes [(OC)₅Cr(2-isocyano-6-X-1,3-diethoxy-carbonylazulene)] (X = -N≡C, Br,H, SH, SCH₂CH₂CO₂CH₂CH₃, SAuPPh₃) unveiled remarkably consistent inverse-linear correlations δ( ¹³CO_trans) vs. δ( ¹³CN) and δ( ¹³CO_cis) vs. δ( ¹³CN) that appear to hold well beyond the above 2-isocyanoazulenic series to include complexes [(OC)₅Cr(CNR)] containing strongly electron-withdrawing substituents R, such as CF₃, CFClCF₂Cl, C₂F₃, and C₆F₅. In addition to functioning as asensitive ¹³C NMR handle, the essentially C_4v-symmetric [(-NC)Cr(CO)₅] moiety proved to be an informative, remote, ν_N≡C/ν_C≡O infrared reporter in probing chemisorption of 7 on the Au(111) surface.

Comparative measure of the electronic influence of highly substituted aryl isocyanides

To assess the relative electronic influence of highly substituted aryl isocyanides on transition metal centers, a series of C4v-symmetric Cr(CNR)(CO)5 complexes featuring various alkyl, aryl, and m-terphenyl substituents have been prepared. A correlation between carbonyl-ligand (13)C{(1)H} NMR chemical shift (δCO) and calculated Cotton-Kraihanzel (C-K) force constant (kCO) is presented for these complexes to determine the relative changes in isocyanide σ-donor/π-acid ratio as a function of substituent identity and pattern. For nonfluorinated aryl isocyanides possessing alkyl or aryl substitution, minimal variation in effective σ-donor/π-acid ratio is observed over the series. In addition, aryl isocyanides featuring strongly electron-releasing substituents display an electronic influence that nearly matches that of nonfluorinated alkyl isocyanides. Lower σ-donor/π-acid ratios are displayed by polyfluorinated aryl isocyanide ligands. However, the degree of this attenuation relative to nonfluorinated aryl isocyanides is not substantial and significantly higher σ-donor/π-acid ratios than CO are observed in all cases. Substituent patterns for polyfluorinated aryl isocyanides are identified that give rise to low relative σ-donor/π-acid ratios but offer synthetic convenience for coordination chemistry applications. In order to expand the range of available substitution patterns for comparison, the syntheses of the new m-terphenyl isocyanides CNAr(Tripp2), CNp-MeAr(Mes2), CNp-MeAr(DArF2), and CNp-FAr(DArF2) are also reported (Ar(Tripp2) = 2,6-(2,4,6-(i-Pr)3C6H2)2C6H3); p-MeAr(Mes2) = 2,6-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)2-4-Me-C6H2); p-MeAr(DArF2) = 2,6-(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)2-4-Me-C6H2); p-FAr(DArF2) = 2,6-(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)2-4-F-C6H2).
