Abstract
To improve the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of fullerene C60, chemical modifications are normally needed to construct a donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) system, which requires tedious and time-consuming synthesis procedures. In addition, the conjugated structure of C60 will inevitably be destroyed, which is disadvantageous for other applications. Here, we use solvent-based nanoarchitectonics to obtain highly ordered, three-dimensional (3D) C60 supramolecular structures. For this purpose, a liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation (LLIP) method was employed using quinoline as the good solvent. Hollow polyhedra (HPH) and multilayer flowers (MFs) were obtained when methanol and ethanol were selected as the poor solvents, respectively. While quinoline failed to enter the HPH, it was found to be successfully intercalated with the MFs, which induced a transition of the C60 organization from a pristine face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase to a hexagonal close packed (hcp) lattice. When embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, the HPH and MFs both show reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and optical limiting (OL) properties. The MFs-based film showed a third-order nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) of 1.25 × 105 cm·GW-1 and an optical limiting threshold (Fol) of 0.00625 J·cm-2. Comparatively, the HPH-based film exhibited a lower β value of 9.80 × 104 cm GW-1 and a higher Fol value of 0.00834 J cm-2. The better NLO performance of the MFs was mainly ascribed to the formation of the charge transfer complexes between quinoline and C60, proven by UV-vis and electrochemical measurements. The fine tuning of the NLO properties of C60 without chemical modification provides new opportunities for C60 to be applied in nonlinear optics.

Abstract
A family of triarylamine-fullerene conjugates has been synthesized and shown to self-assemble upon light stimulation in chlorinated solvents. This light-induced process primarily involves excitation of triarylamine derivatives, which then oxidize and stack with their neutral counterparts to form charge transfer complexes in the form of p-conducting channels, while fullerenes are consequently enforced in coaxial n-conducting columnar arrangements. These supramolecular heterojunctions can be organized over very long distances in micrometric fibers when a controlled amount of photons is provided from a white light source to initiate the process. Surprisingly, when sunlight or UV light is used instead, the nanostructuration leads to monodisperse spherical objects due to the nature of the nucleation-growth process involved in the stacks formation. This control over the supramolecular morphology of organic self-assemblies using the nature of light is of general interest for the design of functional responsive materials.

Abstract
Recently, a new sulfide cluster fullerene, Sc2S@Cs (10528)-C72 containing two pairs of fused pentagons has been isolated and characterized (Chen et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2012, 134, 7851). Inspired by this investigation, we propose a question: what properties will be influenced by the interaction between the encapsulated V-shaped polar molecule and C72? To answer this question, four encapsulated metallic fullerenes (EMFs) M2N@C72 (M = Sc or Y, N = S or O) along with pristine Cs-C72 (10528) were investigated by quantum chemistry methods. The results show that the Egap (3.01-3.14 eV) of M2N@C72 are significantly greater than that of pristine Cs-C72 (10528) (2.34 eV). This indicates that the stabilities of these EMFs increase by encapsulating the V-shaped polar molecule into the fullerene. Furthermore, the natural bond orbital (NBO) charge analysis indicates electron transfer from M2N to C72 cage, which plays a crucial role in enhancing first hyperpolarizability (βtot). The βtot follows the order of 1174 au (Y2O@C72) ≈ 1179 au (Sc2O@C72) > 886 au (Y2S@C72) ≈ 864 au (Sc2S@C72) > 355 au (C72). This indicates that the βtot of M2N@C72 is more remarkable than that of pristine Cs-C72 (10528) due to the induction effect of the encapsulated molecule. Compared with sulfide cluster fullerenes (Y2S@C72 and Sc2S@C72), oxide cluster fullerenes (Sc2O@C72 and Y2O@C72) show much larger βtot due to the small ionic radius and the large electronegativity of oxygen. In contrast, the metal element (scandium and yttrium) has a slight influence on the βtot. Thus, oxide cluster fullerenes are candidates to become promising nonlinear optical materials with higher performance.

Abstract
C60-Triphenylamine dyads were synthesized for incorporation as photoswitched interfacial layers in organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of these dyads on gold (through S-Au and C60-Au interactions) were prepared through one or two adsorption processes, and their packing densities were fully characterized. Analysis using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements indicated that all SAMs exhibit dense coverage on the gold surfaces. Electrochemical desorption in KOH confirmed that the cis-1 dyad is anchored to the gold surface through its thiol group. Impedance measurements in the absence and presence of UV irradiation were performed to observe the photoswitched properties of these surface confined dyads. Upon UV light exposure of the SAMs, the charge-transfer resistance decreased when Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) was used as the probe redox couple and increased with Ru(NH3)6(3+/2+), confirming the generation of positive charges on the surface upon UV irradiation.

Abstract
Two kinds of D-A molecular of (4-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl))-7-nitrobenzothiadiazole (BSC) and 4-((4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)ethynyl)-7-nitrobenzothiadiazole (BEC) containing carbazole moieties as the donor were synthesized. X-ray crystal data elucidated the multiple intermolecular interactions. They exhibit distinctly different self-assembly behaviours. The nonlinear optical properties were studied using the top-hat Z-scan technique at 532 nm with a 21 ps pulse. The results indicate that they exhibit large third-order nonlinear absorption effects. The nonlinear absorption coefficients α2 fitting the experimental data are 6.3 × 10(-12) m W(-1) for BSC and 3.6 × 10(-11) m W(-1) for BEC. The time-resolved pump-probe results show that both nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction of BEC in CH2Cl2 solution have rapid optical responses, which indicate the nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction mechanism are excited-state nonlinear. Moreover, both of these two compounds are observed to be aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active. The aggregates of the well-formed one-dimensional microrods of BEC and BSC endow the material with potential applications in the field of optical devices.

Abstract
In the present work, we report on the investigation of the third-order nonlinear optical response of graphene fluoride dispersed in DMF and also of fluorosurfactant-stabilized graphene fluoride dispersed in water under visible (532 nm) and infrared (1064 nm), picosecond and nanosecond laser excitation. Both graphene derivatives were found to exhibit large nonlinear optical response, while significant differences on their nonlinear optical response have been observed (e.g. different sign of nonlinear refraction and absorption). These findings highlight the important role of the degree of fluorination of the graphene sheets on their optical and electronic properties. Furthermore, DMF dispersed graphene fluoride was found to exhibit important broadband optical limiting action under nanosecond laser excitation, making it promising candidate for optical limiting applications.
