Abstract
Borinic acids [R2B(OH)] and their chelate derivatives are a subclass of organoborane compounds used in cross-coupling reactions, catalysis, medicinal chemistry, polymer or optoelectronics materials. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the synthesis of diarylborinic acids and their four-coordinated analogs. The main strategies to build up borinic acids rely either on the addition of organometallic reagents to boranes (B(OR)3, BX3, aminoborane, arylboronic esters) or the reaction of triarylboranes with a ligand (diol, amino alcohol, etc.). After general practical considerations of borinic acids, an overview of the main synthetic methods, their scope and limitations is provided. We also discuss some mechanistic aspects.

Abstract
Organoboron compounds are attracting immense research interest due to their wide range of applications. Particularly, low-coordinate organoboron complexes are receiving more attention due to their improbable optical and nonlinear optical properties, which makes them better candidates for medical applications. In this review, we summarize the various synthetic methods including multicomponent reactions, microwave-assisted and traditional pathways of organoboron complexes, and their optical and nonlinear properties. This review also includes the usage of organoboron complexes in various fields including biomedical applications.

Abstract
Three polymeric versions of ansa-N,N-dialkylammoniumtrifluoroborate ambiphilic molecules based on the styrene motif (poly(1-NMe2H+-2-BF3--4-styrene) (P-Me), poly(1-NEt2H+-2-BF3--4-styrene) (P-Et) and poly(1-piperidinyl-H+-2-BF3--4-styrene) (P-Pip)) were synthesized, characterized and tested as heterogeneous pre-catalysts for the borylation of electron-rich heteroarenes. These heterogeneous versions of previously reported pre-catalysts show similar reactivity patterns and represent the first examples of solid-supported FLP metal-free catalysts for the C-H borylation of heteroarenes.

Abstract
Five napthyridine-based fluorine-boron (BF2-napthyridine) conjugated compounds have been theoretically designed, and subsequently, their photophysical properties are investigated. The influence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups attached with the N∧C∧O moiety of BF2-napthyridine molecule has been interpreted. The optoelectronic properties, including absorption spectra and emission spectra of the BF2-napthyridine derivatives are studied using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) based methods. Different characteristics, such as HOMO-LUMO gap, molecular orbital density, ionization potential, electron affinity, and reorganization energy for hole and electron, are calculated. All these molecules show excellent π-electron delocalization. TD-DFT results illustrate that the amine-substituted BF2-napthyridine derivative has the highest absorption and emission maxima; it also shows a maximum Stoke shift. These results are well-correlated with the structural parameters and calculated HOMO-LUMO gap. Moreover, it is found that introduction of an electron-donating group into the BF2-napthyridine complex improves the hole transport properties and provides useful clues in designing new materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLED). As a whole, this work demonstrates that electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups in BF2 derivatives can extend their effectiveness toward designing of OLED materials, vitro cellular studies, ex vivo assays, and in vivo imaging agents.

Abstract
The first dimesitylboryl substitution of aryl halides with a silylborane bearing a dimesitylboryl group in the presence of alkali-metal alkoxides is described. The reactions of aryl bromides or iodides with Ph2 MeSi-BMes2 and Na(OtBu) afforded the desired aryl dimesitylboranes in good to high yields and with high borylation/silylation ratios. Selective reaction of the sterically less-hindered C-Br bond of dibromoarenes provided monoborylated products. This reaction was used to rapidly construct a D-π-A aryl dimesityl borane with a non-symmetrical biphenyl spacer.

Abstract
In the absence of transition metal catalysts, the unsymmetrical diborane(4), pinB-BMes2, reacted with alkynes to afford diborylalkenes. The isomer ratio of the products could be controlled via temperature, solvent, and additive(s). A reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of two isolated intermediates, and this reaction could furthermore be applied to synthesize a luminescent molecule.

Abstract
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used to treat acute pain, fever, and inflammation and are being explored in a new indication in cancer. Side effects associated with long-term use of NSAIDs such as gastrointestinal damage and elevated risk of stroke, however, can limit their use and exploration in new indications. Here we report a facile method to prepare well-defined amphiphilic diblock copolymer NSAID prodrugs by direct reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization of the acrylamide derivative of ibuprofen (IBU), a widely used NSAID. The synthesis and self-assembling behavior of amphiphilic diblock copolymers (PEG-PIBU) having a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) block and a hydrophobic IBU-bearing prodrug block were investigated. Release profiles of IBU from the micelles by hydrolysis were evaluated. Furthermore, the antiproliferative action of the IBU-containing micelles in human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) and murine melanoma (B16-F10) cells was assessed.

Abstract
Well-defined boronic acid block copolymers were demonstrated to exhibit glucose-responsive disassembly at physiological pH. A boronic acid-containing acrylamide monomer with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the pendant phenylboronic acid moiety was polymerized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to yield a polymer with a boronic acid pKa = 8.2. Below this value, a block copolymer of this monomer with poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) self-assembled into aggregates. Addition of base to yield a pH > pKa or addition of glucose at pH = 7.4 resulted in aggregate dissociation that may prove promising for controlled delivery applications under physiological relevant conditions.

Abstract
We present two different procedures for the synthesis of poly[4-(1',3'-diethyl-1',3',2'-benzodiazaborolyl)styrene] (3a) and poly[4-(1',3'-diphenyl-1',3',2'-benzodiazaborolyl)styrene] (3b). The new polymers were fully characterized by GPC, multinuclear NMR, and elemental analysis. The thermal properties and stability were studied by DSC and TGA, and the optical characteristics were examined by absorption and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Remarkably high quantum yields of up to 77% were measured. In comparison to molecular species we found significantly shorter lifetimes, likely as a result of incorporation of the chromophores into the polymer structure.

Abstract
This paper provides a third update to the review of reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) achieved with thiocarbonylthio compounds (ZC(=S)SR) by a mechanism of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) that was published in June 2005 (Aust. J. Chem. 2005, 58, 379). The first update was published in November 2006 (Aust. J. Chem. 2006, 59, 669) and the second in December 2009 (Aust. J. Chem. 2009, 62, 1402). This review cites over 700 publications that appeared during the period mid 2009 to early 2012 covering various aspects of RAFT polymerization which include reagent synthesis and properties, kinetics and mechanism of polymerization, novel polymer syntheses, and a diverse range of applications. This period has witnessed further significant developments, particularly in the areas of novel RAFT agents, techniques for end-group transformation, the production of micro/nanoparticles and modified surfaces, and biopolymer conjugates both for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
