Topotactic Ion Exchange in a Three-Dimensional Close-Packed Trirutile Structure with an Octahedral Network

Topotactic ion exchange in open-framework solids and oxides with layered and tunnel structures has resulted in the formation of a variety of metastable functional materials that are inaccessible otherwise. These ion exchanges are primarily limited to the above structure types because of the presence of labile ions as loosely held charge-compensating cations/anions as in the framework or tunnel structures or the lability of the ions/charged motifs in interlayer galleries of layered oxides. While such topotactic exchanges are common in the above structure types, they are rare in the three-dimensional (3D) close-packed structures based solely on corner- and/or edge-connected polyhedral networks. Herein, we demonstrate divalent iron exchange in a close-packed all-octahedral-coordinated trirutile oxide. This has enabled the transformation of a near-ultraviolet-absorbing diamagnetic insulating oxide into a visible-light-active paramagnetic semiconductor. An ion exchange of this kind may open up avenues for the development of metastable functional oxides with a variety of other 3D structures and diverse properties.

Microwave-assisted routes for rapid and efficient modification of layered perovskites

Recent advances in exploiting microwave radiation in the topochemical modification of layered oxide perovskites are presented. Such methods work well for rapid bulk synthetic steps used in the production of novel inorganic-organic hybrids (protonation, grafting, intercalation, and in situ click reactions), exfoliation to produce dispersed nanosheets, and post-exfoliation processing to rapidly vary nanosheet surface groups. Compared to traditional methods that often take days, microwave methods can produce quality products in as little as 1-2 h.

Soft chemistry of ion-exchangeable layered metal oxides

Disassembly and re-assembly of layered metal oxides by soft chemical approaches can be used to tailor functionalities in artificial photosynthesis, energy storage, optics, and piezoelectrics.

Thermal structural characterization of the acentric layered perovskite LiHSrTa2O7: X-ray and neutron diffraction, SHG and Raman experiments

The present work concerns the thermal structural characterization of the acentric Ruddlesden-Popper LiHSrTa2O7. A previous study, performed with powder neutron diffraction data, has revealed that at room temperature, LiHSrTa2O7 crystallizes in the Ama2 space group and that the acentric character is mainly due to the unequal distribution of the Li(+) and H(+) cations on their sites. In this new paper, the thermal behaviour has been studied by several techniques: powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, SHG experiments and Raman spectroscopy. All of them have revealed that LiHSrTa2O7 undergoes a reversible structural transition from an orthorhombic to a tetragonal symmetry around 200 °C. This transition is associated with the progressive vanishing of the TaO6 octahedra tilting, becoming completely straight in the high temperature form (S.G. I4/mmm), and with a variation of the Li(+) and H(+) distribution in the interlayer spacing.

Topochemical manipulation of perovskites: low-temperature reaction strategies for directing structure and properties

Topochemical reaction strategies offer an important low-temperature (<500 °C) approach to the conscious manipulation of various inorganic host materials, allowing access to compounds that cannot be prepared by standard high-temperature methods. As the utility of these strategies continues to expand, researchers will be able to more effectively target materials with technologically significant properties. This Progress Report presents recent advances in topochemical reaction strategies as applied to perovskite and perovskite-related compounds. Emphasis is placed on structural modifications and corresponding variations in properties. Additionally, the future prospects of this approach to the rational design of intricate target compounds are discussed.
