Abstract
Separation of minor actinides from lanthanides is one of the biggest challenges in spent fuel reprocessing due to the similar physicochemical properties of trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) and actinides (An(III)). Therefore, developing ligands with excellent extraction and separation performance is essential at present. As an excellent pre-organization platform, calixarene has received more attention on Ln(III)/An(III) separation. In this work, we systematically explored the complexation behaviors of the diglycolamide (DGA)/dimethylacetamide (DMA)-functionalized calix[4]arene extractants for Eu(III) and Am(III) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). These calix[4]arene-derived ligands were obtained by functionalization with two or four binding units at the narrow edge of the calix[4]arene platform. All bonding nature analyses suggested that the Eu-L complexes possess stronger interaction compared to Am-L analogues, resulting in the higher extraction capacity of the these calix[4]arene ligands toward Eu(III). Thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that these pre-organized ligands on the calix[4]arene platform with four binding units yield better extraction abilities than the single ligands. Although DMA-functionalized ligands show stronger complexation stability for metal ions, in acidic solutions, the calix[4]arene ligands with DGA binding units have better extraction performance for Eu(III) and Am(III) due to the basicity of the DMA ligand. This work enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of the bonding properties between supramolecular ligands and lanthanides/actinides and afford useful insights into designing efficient supramolecular ligands for separating Ln(III)/An(III).

Abstract
Selective extraction of highly radiotoxic actinides(III) is an important and challenging task in nuclear wastewater treatment. Many proposed ligands containing S or P atoms have drawbacks including high reagent consumption and possible secondary pollution after incineration. The present work reports five novel pillar[5]arene-based extractants that are anchored with picolinamide substituents of different electronic nature by varying spacer. These ligands reveal highly efficient separation of actinides(III) over lanthanides(III). Specifically, almost all of these ligands could extract Am(III) over Eu(III) selectively at around pH 3.0 (SFAm/Eu>11) with fast extraction kinetics. Variation of the pyridine nitrogen basicity via changing para-substitution leads to an increase in the distribution ratios by a factor of over 300 times for Am(III) with an electron-withdrawing group compared to those with an electron donating group. Investigation of complexation mechanism by slope analysis, NMR, IR, EXAFS, and DFT techniques indicates that each ligand binds two metal ions by pyridine nitrogen and amide oxygen. Finally, these ligands do not show obvious decrease in both extraction and separation ability after being exposed to 250 kGy absorbed gamma radiation. These results demonstrate the potential application of pillar[5]arene-picolinamides for actinide(III) separation.

Abstract
Although current and proposed reprocessing of used nuclear fuel is performed predominantly by solvent extraction processes, solid phase sorbent materials have many advantages including the ability to avoid production of large volumes of organic waste. Therefore, three titania nanoparticle based sorbent materials have been developed, functionalized with organic ligands designed to impart selectivity for elements relevant to important separations at the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle. A novel, simplified method of covalent functionalization to the titania surface has been utilized, and the resulting materials have been shown to be hydrolytically stable at pH 2. The sorption behavior of these organofunctionalized titania materials was investigated over a wide pH range with a selection of elements including fission products and actinides. Titania nanoparticles functionalized with an amine or phosphate moiety were able to demonstrate exclusive extraction of uranium under optimized conditions. Titania nanoparticles functionalized with a picolinamide moiety exhibited superior minor actinide sorption properties, in terms of both efficiency and selectivity, to solvent extraction processes using similar organic moieties. As such, organo-functionalized titania materials as solid phase sorbents show promise as a future alternative to solvent extraction processes for nuclear separations.

Abstract
Abstract
The current interest in functionalized calixarenes with phosphorylated pendant arms resides in their coordination ability towards f elements and capability towards actinide/rare earth separation. Uranyl cation forms 1:1 and 1:2 (M:L) complexes with a tetra-phosphinoylated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, B4bL4: UO2(NO3)2(B4bL4)
n
· xH2O (n = 1, x = 2, 1; n = 2, x = 6, 2). Spectroscopic data point to the inner coordination sphere of 1 containing one monodentate nitrate anion, one water molecule and the four phosphinoylated arms bound to UO2
2+ while in 2, uranyl is only coordinated to calixarene ligands. In both cases the U(VI) ion is 8-coordinate. Uranyl complexes display enhanced metal-centred luminescence due to energy transfer from the calixarene ligands; the luminescence decays are bi-exponential with associated lifetimes in the ranges 220 μs <τ
s <250 μs and 630 μs <τ
L < 640 μs, pointing to the presence of two species with differently coordinated calixarene, as substantiated by a XPS study of U(4f
5/2,7/2), O(1s) and P(2p) levels on solid state samples. The extraction study of UO2
2+ cation and trivalent rare-earth (Y, La, Eu) ions from acidic nitrate media by B4bL4 in chloroform shows the uranyl cation being much more extracted than rare earths.
